Have you put in NA 2.0 in the chassis of this R5? That’s about 160bhp in a 800kg sports car…OMG
That would even be better than the best of that time, the Peugeot GTI 1.9 with the Dimma kit on it.

I bought mine in 1991 when i was 21. My neighbour was a race mechanic for a reanult 5 racing team. He offered me a set of 4 koni gas shocks for £40 which i duely accepted and he even fitted them. To this day its the best handling car i ever owned. I was doing a lot of motorway driving from 1997 and bought motorway BMW, the renault sat on the driveway for 4 years doing nothing. I ended up giving it away for £400 in the end. Wished i had of stored it. I see from the gov website its been SORN'd for a while, no MOT sice 2015.

I don't think even the R6 Monaco had AC as an option in the UK, possibly in other markets though as the Clio Baccara did.
I was out yesterday in my 25 year old Mégane coupe with no AC but I do at least have a tilt and slide soonroof. When I had my R5 I recall the pop out rear windows being pretty effective.
I always thought the cars build was ok. The switchgear always felt chunky and solid, just a lot of hard plastic and the doors in particular had a very tinny sound.
Older cars may not have the refinement or straight line performance and flat cornering we have become used to with modern cars but I personally thing the older models are much more enjoyable and always leave you smiling in a way that a modern car never will.

So there are 5 GTTs out there with it AFAIK, but LHD for the warmer climates. Those 2 blanked switches in the centre console for the Aircon and recirc buttons. You can just see it in this one...

I had a 1990 Phase 2 on mustard yellow. It had the yelow foglight and I also had yelow light bulbs on the headlight similar to the french cars. Mine was lowered and the front bumper was excatly 11cm from the ground, it looked astonishing. I turned the rod of the wastegate in a way that I shortened so that I could get more boost. I read 228 km/h going downhill onn the speedometer and I would hit 210km/h on a flat road. Years later I owned a second one but it wasn't as fast. The R5 turbo is one of the best looking and faster/quickest cars made in Europe on that area. My other all favorite was the Fiat Uno Turbo(second gen). Lastly, I almost purchased a new Fiat Punto GT in 94, it had that cool greenish/mustard metallich color. Renault was the baddest in the 80's and 90s, they offered everything on turbo.

The GT Turbos were well specced when new compare with rivals. Leccy windows, fog lights, sunroof all standard features. The Clio 172 was the same.
I owned 2, even when shed money they drew admiration and plenty of folk chatting at petrol stations etc.
With a bar boost mine made 148bhp and 179ftlb torque, the torque and the way it came in slingshotting the car down the road was brilliant. Easily kept up with standard ish Cosworths up to 80mph.

I had a Phase 1 back in ‘94. I loved it and even though I have the funds to buy an absolutely top end example now I don’t think I could ever pull the trigger purely on that rose tinted spectacles/ never meet your heroes factor. Even watching your review I could see you were letting obviously ‘crap’ things about the 5 slip through and letting them just pass the grade as ‘tolerable’ out of sheer respect.. which is what I would do too 😄
Thank you for the review and your take on the car after all these years. I’ll go and cry now when I think of how I sold my mint example and any many other iconic hot hatches for absolute peanuts!

A fair assessment, though one thing you did overlook, which is not fun! The attitude of some modern drivers. Their assumptions being that because it's an old car that fully permits them to take safety liberties. I think I noticed someone cut you up from the inside. If it can be done without anger, giving them the benefit of the turbo at full-chat, and changing back up as you pass, can be very satisfying, though the impact from your point of view will be totally lost on them.
I took my own Tungy R5GTT to a show down the coast at the weekend and even though I just wanted to enjoy the drive, there were more than a few occasions when the "big hand" of the disc brakes came to my rescue. Some of the blatantly dangerous antics are barely believable, especially pulling out in front from side roads when you're bearing down on that junction at road speed, on an otherwise clear road.
One other thing to be aware of. Unlike the R11 Turbo, the R5GTT is very prone to turbo-steer. It's the way that a badly-timed, heavy right-foot can catch you unawares that causes unplanned meetings with what should be passing greenery. The suspension is nowhere near as harsh as in competitor cars of the same era and the way that the seats wrap you in quite a high position provides a lot of driving confidence as well as unmatched comfort. Your summary of "fun" should be being said with the biggest grin you can muster!
