Amazing, thank you so much for this. I bought a one-owner GT turbo in tungstene grey in January 2023, after dreaming about them for two decades. Mine is a 1989 and I was born in 1984, so almost the same age and definitely the same generation. I remember seeing one of them on the main square of my little town in the French Alps, I could barely read and I forced myself to remember what it was, when I read "RENAULT 5 GT turbo" on the back. It stuck with me since, despite owning a Mégane 3 RS and a Clio Williams, I always kept thinking about my love at first sight with the GT turbo. There's something about these cars that's just magic! Long live the GT turbo and its fans :)

I had a silver GT Turbo in 1989, G333 OLG, i was only 19! It was only 4 months old. In the 18 months I owned it , it snapped NINE clutch cables, lots of things failed, but I did get through Michelin MXV's on the front in 4 months! It was probably the most fun car Ive ever driven. It was so driveable, light and pokey! Ive now got a 1.9 205 Ive bare shell rebuilt, its nice, but the GT Turbo has my heart🚗💨

But remember many a good driving road from Yorkshire to Scotland. Also remember giving chase to a Peugeot 205 1.9. After that I wanted one of those instead but it never happened. Love these car's, I had one in the early 90s . It was the most fun I've even had in a car . Saying that I was 19 😂. On a boring and downwards note. Everything broke on it. The turbo , clutch, starter motor, cooling sensors etc etc etc. The clutch was a engine out job and cost me £550 in 1993. As for the turbo no one want to touch it. I lucky found a local Renault specialist that did it for me. I can't remember how much it was but it sure wasn't cheap at the time .

I absolutely loved it and have never stopped regretting the day I made a terrible decision to sell it back in 04'... 😢 What was I thinking?? It was over boosting to about 180bhp but boy was it so much fun to drive and cruise in. It was also the most comfortable car I have ever driven. It looks better than new imo , a treat to see one like this . I had mine from a year old with 9000 mls on the clock . I owned it for 12 years and the only mods i did were a bleed valve , a Magnex exhaust system and AVO adjustable suspension . I looked after it and it was ultra reliable , never broke down apart from the dreaded clutch cable snap , which Renault did remedy eventually .

Sold it to finance my first cosworth, which was standard and a huge disappointment initially after the R5. Actually, I cried after my first long journey in the cosworth, my girlfriend at the time had to console me as I thought I'd made a huge mistake. A set of injectors, map sensor, actuator and chip soon had me forgetting the R5 😂 i was 19 then, and now I really regret selling the 5. H190 POO was the reg.

    I love these !
I had two when I was 18-20 in the 80's - they just blew people's mind when I took them out for a spin - they laughed at me when I told them it was quick as a supra 3 turbo, so once their seatbelt was fastened, they stopped laughing 😆.... Of course it almost cost me my licence once 🤣 This is looking immaculate - that definitely gets a lot of TLC!. Alas the last one died in 1996😩 The clutch cables would go often as it was so hard and snappy, but you could learn to drive without one and could get it home, without too much concern! I too wondered about getting the 205 1.9 gti, but thought the 5 was a bit more rebellious so I got the tungsten too in 1990! Great to see someone else out there with good memories

Computers! You will never get a design like a e-type jaguar done via computer. Its why all cars tend to look very similar… long gone are the skills that gave you master craftsmen for bodywork creation or the use of clay to sculpt full clay models of cars. When we start going back to having blackouts etc we will then see why technology etc has not been a good thing.

Absolutely beautiful! Just needs a nice set of giant TSW Venom alloys, lowering, a bodykit and some lime green silicon hoses under the bonnet and it would be perfect. Oh, and an ON A MISSION sticker in the rear window... seriously though, that is utterly amazing, I wonder how much someone would pay for that? £30k?
in 1987 one of these was about £7000, which would be just over £25,000 today.

I bought a second generation GT turbo brand new in 1989 - loved it but the build quality was pretty iffy - Front seats that became uncomfortable the longer you drove it, lost 5th gear after 2 months of driving ( the big nut on the end of the gearbox main shaft came loose, so pretty easy fix) - If I went over a certain level crossing in Sussex at speed the hatchback opened all by itself - Sometimes it was hard to start when hot, even though it had the anti peculation kit fitted to cool the carburettor float chamber. It handled brilliantly though and was total fun to drive.
