    Perhaps one of the best features of U-he Satin is that it has built in Dolby A, B, and also DBX Type I and II noise reduction systems. The DBX noise reduction is especially interesting because it gives you the ability to decode DBX encoded records and tapes... YES, for those of you who don't know this, there were DBX encoded LPs that sounded very good. They had very little to no surface noise and any ticks or pops were pretty much cleared up. Dolby A and B are more common, and these can also be decoded with this program.

    I know you hate plugins but many people can’t tell the difference between a high quality plugin and hardware. I prefer plugins because of money (I make minimum wage), space (my apartment is tiny), ease of use, and doesn’t create clutter (I’m a minimalist and hate wires / cables everywhere). But money and space is by far the biggest factor. Try to keep that in mind as to why people like plugins.

      Idk,because some ways of use they may do and others not. A way I've been advised is not to solo a single instance but the cumulative effect of many instances (which may be so subtle as to be inaudible when solo'd) across tracks and how those tracks blend together being another way to a/b test them that has surprising results when you bypass all at once.

    One thing I would like to add about you saying that plugins are good for when you want to mix on the go. There are also people who can't afford analog gear, but do love to mix, and do like the sound. It's not only a "Does it sound question" but also a money question

      Exactly correct my friend, I like this guys channel but it gets annoying when he constantly says "I have a real tape machine" if I want tape sound and the same comparison for other bits of analogue gear he owns. And exactly how many versions of "sandstorm" does the guy posses? Can't we hear a different genre just for once? As I say I do like the channel but more for entertainment value as I'll never have the cash or space for all his analogue gear.

    one thing that is quite importend to dial in satin is the headroom in my opinion.. it was on default here, which is often too high (too much headroom) for my taste... therefor you realy need to drive very hot into satin.. maybe that's what kills the depth a bit... since with less headroom.. you don't need to gain so hot into it.. but have the tape already "working" with lower peaks and more "working" with higher peaks... it definately needs some tuning till you get it where you want to get it (often.. or at least for my taste) .. almost a bit like when you dial in reverbs.. reverbs usually also need quite some tuning...
    but when you have satin where you want it.. it can sound pretty good I think... however.. if you have a real tape machine... ofcourse the most logical thing is to use the real tape.. :) .. but on the otherhand you have the group possibility in satin which gives you something like a multitrack tape option...
    for me satin was the first plugin which give me this ..,. I can't realy describe it... pre transient vibe.. which I get from tapes... it's not realy audible or so.. more like a feel... it's hard to describe.. ofcourse the transient is where it is.. but tape sound always gave me some feeling of like something is already happening before the transient... most other plugins.. were just mostly saturation and such things... and with satin I got this tape feeling the first time in a plugin...
    ofcourse it might not come in the same amount of a real tape... it's still a digital plugin... but for me searching for tape sound without the ability to have a tape machine here.. it came pretty close to what I was searching for...
    the only thing is it is quite a cpu hog if you use it realy multitrack like..
    it becomes a nice chorus effect if you use it parallel btw :) (because of the wow)

    I actually really like that plugin. It really starts shining once you use it on more than one track and than play with the settings in the linked mode. You can then lock the settings you don't want to be changed via right click on the individual instances. The service panel should be better not displayed in that case as the plugin uses twice the amount of RAM in order to display this real time spectrum which can add up quite a lot when you use it on many tracks at once. The added tape delay and flanging effect are also very well done btw.

    I've been playing around with this since the video was released a couple of days ago, and I have to say, this is definitely NOT Snake Oil. Don't believe me. Let you own ears experience it. Warren Huart does some playing around with it here: ua-cam.com/video/rnnKEPqA0dE/v-deo.html
    And Warren didn't really even touch on what it can do! This is a game changing plugin that is way more than a tape emulator. I put it on a bunch of tracks in "finished" mixes by me and a some pros who've mixed some pretty big tracks and with a lot more experience than I have, and it's utterly mind blowing what it does. The difference in the heft, depth, brightness, richness, and every other good adjective you can think of when it comes to music, is remarkable. This is a must have plugin, even if you own a whole room of tape machines. It does things you could never do with even 20 tape machines. I've added it to all my templates on every track, aux track, and mix buss.

    Hi from Quebec Canada ! Where people speak french! so pardon my english, I am really a fan now and your reviews and snake oil videos are my favorites you go straight to the point you dont spend 10 minutes showing us an empty screen telling us how you heard of the product and thats pretty positive... I am exploring alternatives from digital only right now to add a little bit of analog into my mixes and I have heard of a type of small analog console witch is a multitrack usb interface at the same time and I was wondering if it would be worth it just to get used to mixing analog or if the console is complete crap... or partial crap... lol or maybe could deliver something interresting .. anyway, if you can test it one day it would be really great because i think there is only 2 or max 3 very poorly done reviews on youtube.. the console is the Soundcraft signature 22 mtk ... The reason why im looking at this particular one is that it looks like the cheapest way to mix analog directly from a daw... without external converters or anything you can litteraly send your tracks into the conosle and print back in the DAW... and i've never seen anything at that price range do this .. so if you could, maybe one day, review it, or analyse it, it would be much appreciated. So far i've watched around 15 of your videos and I think those are the best honnest reviews out there !

    You should compare it to Softube Tape.

    • @xaosnox
      @xaosnox 5 років тому

      It's a completely different thing altogether. There is no real way to compare them. Satin can not just do everything SoftTube Tape (and with more ?niceness"), it does about a million things Tape couldn't dream of doing. It's a game changer! This doesn't even begin to touch on the power it can add to your work. ua-cam.com/video/rnnKEPqA0dE/v-deo.html

      @matrixate 5 років тому +3

      @ PHART / XS Softube Tape is designed for other reasons. You don't know enough about these tools if you're trying to say that one is better because it does "more" than the other. It's like saying a 7.1 surround speaker home theater setup is better than a pair of Focals because they do more and you get more speakers. A bus carries more people and does more than a Corvette. Is a bus better?

    Thanks! still king is ff saturn at warm or clean tape @0-20 dist. my opinion.
    my idea for a real piece of gear review: the new ssl six desktop mixer. might be awesome?? or snake oil... at least the the g bus comp is worth the price...

    the dolby machine you are speaking of is cloned by audio thing called TYPE a ( even has a scratched NR) on it. sounds very good

    • @izvarzone
      @izvarzone 3 роки тому

      Yeah I like to use it, somehow it improves sound for me. A-Type mod is my favorite. The cool part it can be even used with tape bypassed. Don't know any other plugins that have that.
      uhx type 1 and 2 can be also sed for lofi music.

      @@izvarzone very cool, hey I appreciate the comment and the info, were all learning this thing together right? Im excited I just got my Doepfer box,... starting Just starting the modular 'Journey'

    • @izvarzone
      @izvarzone 3 роки тому

      I actually find even more cool combos, A-Type endoder, B-Type decoder, etc, or even stacking different ones. Using dry/wet ofc, 100% becomes overcompressed.
      You can even lower input, it changes how it works. The headroom in circuit can change amount of compression.

    I'd test this plugin with a song that don't have an intro with a filter starting to open ..
    I' d test on drums, bass or in a fullfilled song. Not with just in an intro.. and make A/B test wiht different materials.
    There were not much high frequencies in the song ( was just the intro). I don' t know if you catch 'cause I' m really bad in english.

    This thing is awesome for the flanging and tape delay and has some cool sounds, not sure how authentic and I wouldn't put it on everything like I do with slate but a cool thing. That said I use j37 for that vintage lofi slap back.

    Which digital noise reduction plugin / software do you use to denoise stuff you've printed to tape to get the "tape sound?"
    Does the digital noise reduction grate on your ears too? To me I have yet to find a noise reducer that doesn't make either watery (small FFT) or metallic (big FFT size) artifacts. I know this sounds silly but I almost would rather deal with noise than those artifacts. Curious about your opinion. As always I love watching your videos! You seem like a great person. My wife has family in Boxtel. It would be fun to buy you a pint some time!
