      I discovered U-HE quite late as well in the game. Even if you believe that you already have all types of synth/FX plugins (and we all have 'enough') - don't let that stop you trying their demos. It's all a matter of taste. But you might be surprised how musical their VSTs of instruments you already own may sound.

      The Repro 5 is one of the best sounding Analog Mod Softsynths I know. I was in the studio last year and we recorded in a session with the pre-recorded demo files and the engineer was just setting up the session for drum recording and out of nothing asked: "Jesus, which synth is this? Sounds amazing"

    It's funny how this plugin FEELS like using a featureless, three-knob compressor because of how quick I can dial things in yet, it has a features beyond my go-to Fab-Filter compressors. It's a really good time using this for dramatic, over-compressed sounds as well.

    glad you dig this one, this has been one of my go to compressors for everything because it does so much and the different views really help to focus it on getting something quick to start with. the saturation sections is kind of secret sauce for along with the dual phase reverse thing really can add a unique twist on the sound.

    u-He/Urs Heckmann have been making the best soft synths out there in a very crowded field. Hans Zimmer, Daniel Miller, Martin Gore, Ty Unwin , Billy Currie, Midge Ure, Richard Barbieri etc. etc. are all huge u-He users/fans.

While financially I would have rather purchased this during the rare occurrences U-he actually has a sale; this was the only full-price one I got my money's worth. Same for their Zebra, Diva and Hive2 synths. -- I'm curious to know how their Satin plugin compares to the other tape saturation plugins, and how worth it the rest of the effects are.

    Thanks for checking it out. Seems to me like the first Compressor in a long time that could make real sense to buy. Becourse it is not like the 99% other compressors on the market. It has nice intelligent features. But in the end - its just and still a compressor lol. U-He does such a great job with its plugins incl. synths. Hive2 is great, Diva also.. what to say i did never find a bad thing from U-he and i believe i never will. So i think that compressor realy can be a great choice for mixing as well for Mastering. But to be true, since i did realize my mixing failures in the past - i do not very often take Compressor in my mix. I work more with true envelopes to get them right. I do not realy often have to do "recordings" or work with unprocessed material that needs some of that "magic". Only sometimes when i want to color my digital stuff with a spezific compression behavior i choose some La2a clone or stuff like that. So - i dont need it. But thats a plugin that could be one of those tool to get and from that day on miss like hell when it is gone. And thats a great Sign for a Plugin.

    Autogain is so important, not just for workflow, but to combat ear fatigue. It makes it so easy to know how a plugin is changing your sound.
    I have made my own autogain versions of sone plugins in FL Studio patcher before because i wanted that feature so much.

  • @noisehead
    @noisehead 8 місяців тому

    Hey man, really enjoying your videos! Could you explain how "autogain" is possible in a dynamic plugin? on the vsts that i create autogain is only possible if you have a linear or exponential response, but on dynamic plugins you usually end up with different levels at the end so using the same gain reduction for all tracks does not work.
    It would need a dynamic gain reduction (which is only possible in a period of time) but this is far more in depth than just connecting two inversed knobs right?
    Let me know if you have an idea what the best setup for a plugin would be.

    There are so many plugins now that are free and some are quite good. I ran across U-he's Tyrell and Zebralette (both from U-he and free)and loved them. I kept hearing about their Diva synth time and time again so I looked at it 3 or 4 months ago and saw it had a demo. I downloaded the demo. I am a country/bluegrass/acoustic mostly guy and synths don't really fit my kind of music, but I had played secular music for the first 20 or so years of my career before doing the Old Time Gospel music I do now and had used them back then. Ok, back to Diva. A musician is always experimenting and I started wanting to create some "Orchestrated Synth" music. So I thought lets give this Diva thing a shot. I was stunned. Within two days I had paid to get rid of the static lol! First plug I ever paid for. I have loved it so much I even wrote my first "Orchestrated" piece with it alone except for the drums and used 21 instances of it. Did I say I love this thing? I then caved and bought Hive, the Repro package (I used a hardware pro one in my early days to play bass on and it sounded great. So does the plug!) and Zebra, all from U-he. These U-he people are incredible, so it doesn't surprise me at all that this thing is good as well.

  • @jameschandler4711
    @jameschandler4711 Рік тому +2

    I love this guy but in this case he really didn't give this incredible plugin the justice it deserves. He thinks the different views are just simplified GUIs but actually the controls work differently with each different view, to simulate different types of compressors so you can dial in a particular sound real quick, then change to the main view if you want to fine tune it. He's acting like he's never seen a plugin with auto gain make up before but this plugin has so many actual cool features that I've never seen before and that he quite possibly hasn't either, such as the fact that you can not only dial in a bit of dry mix, but you can also HPF the dry mix so you only bring back the tops from the uncompressed signal. That is cool. Another great feature is you can set the saturation to be pre or post compression. u-he put so much work into this and it's great that Snake Oil man gives it a mention but though I appreciate what he puts into these videos I think he really should have spent a little more time getting to know the plugin before filming this one

    I guess many compressor plugins without auto make-up gain are just that way because good auto make-up gain is not that easy to do.
    There are "standard" formulas available on the web, but the problem is that compression (i.e. gain reduction) is dynamic and make-up gain is static. If the make-up gain were calculated on the fly per sample from the gain reduction, it would effectively just be a reduction of the gain reduction per sample i.e. less compression. So it needs to be a static volume adjustment that's usually calculated from Threshold and Ratio, and depending on the implementation maybe a few other factors.
    In the end, it's a bit of a guessing game, and therefore quite hit-or-miss from case to case.

That way, I wouldn't need to assign any two given parameters to two knobs on a control surface. -- While using two mice wouldn't have the same feel as turning two knobs....its still more handy than one mouse, one parameter at a time, or having to constantly assign two parameters. -- I can't see it being practical for gaming or anything other than music, so its why we'll never have that feature. But it would be nice if the system preferences had a simple option for a secondary mouse with its own cursor.

    I feel you. I think part of the problem is there is an audio engineer trying to explain to the chief software programmer what they want.

    But how many compressors do we need? Compressors compress and most of them do it really well. I have free and paid compressors out the wazoo and they are all pretty damn good. I can't believe that we are somehow on an endless search to find better compression. Please tell me what all this nonsense is really for...

    I understand the rant about Autogain, and I totally agree about how much a good autogain can help, but isn't it about a bit more than just linking the input and output signal levels (as you demonstrated with that hardware interface). I'd always imagined that a good Autogain had to adjust to the gain reduction that would result from changes made to ALL the various settings (ratio, threshold, attack, release etc) the user made to the compressor?

    • @SamHocking
      @SamHocking 2 роки тому +1

      The output gain does contain all the adjustments you made to the plugin. The one adjustment you don't want to hear though, is gain. Gain has no sound, so you don't need to hear it.

    • @mikeonb4c
      @mikeonb4c 2 роки тому

      @@SamHocking thanks. That's great to know. What confused this newcomer though was that the 'two hands' example shown didn't appear to suggest anything more than that the plugin linked input and output knobs when in fact it's probably doing a lot more than just that through its autogain function.

    Great video, thanks! I've been using this one for years, since it came out, and can attest that it is not snake oil. How can it be, if it isn't claiming to be anything?
    Also, would you consider reviewing Kush plugins? I've been on a kick of debunking plugin magic using plugin doctor. I learned virtually all my EQs are replicable in pro-Q. But I became more convinced from my analysis of them that the Kush Omega bundles (saturators) are special, and each do something unique. Novatron is also very good. Would love to get your perspective on them though!

  • @nj1255
    @nj1255 2 роки тому

    I think that you know that automatic gain compensation in a non-linear plug-in is not as easy as what you described. Yes, a good compressor/limiter/distortion should have it as an option, but most of the times I disable it because it doesn't work as I want it to. The reason is that there is no universal method for calculating AGC for compressors, so what you get is pretty much the developers opinion on how to do it, which might not jibe with how you think it should be done. Having no AGC doesn't instantly make a dynamics plug-in worthless, but for many it is certainly a plus.
