A Magnificent Magnetic Tape Machine Plugin
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 чер 2024
- This is a tutorial of the U-He Satin Tape machine plugin. You can use it as a tape recorder, delay or flanger. This is a high quality tape emulation plugin which you can use for LoFi applications as well as more subtle tape glue and saturation.

Can the magnets in the VST damage my PC?
If you put them next to your crt monitor emulation
hilarious:)
no... 🤔🤔if you crack it... maybe it will damage your personality😂
[tape speed] _"If you set it really fast you start getting more kind of Lo-Fi sound"_
This is wrong, faster tape speed (more tape passing the record head when recording) will give you a higher quality (less Lo-Fi) sound.
@aniss That's not actually what's happening, it's not that a lower speed will give you _more_ low end, it's simply that a lower speed will roll off the high-end.
@aniss _"I didn't say lower speed gives MORE low-end"_
You said faster IPS has less low end, this is not the case, the low end is pretty much the same for both speeds.
I’ve been waiting for somebody do an actually good useful walkthrough of this plugin on UA-cam. I use Satin all the time but nowhere near it’s full capacity and thanks to this video, I can start to use it in even more applications. Appreciate you 🙏🏼
I think this is an amazing AND very underrated tape sim, it's such a versatile tool.
Been my go to for adding soft high end boost for years. Also an amazing delay. Its on every mix, including the master.
Really lovely lofi sounds with the piano alone.
you explained this unbelievably well in a sense that you made it simple for any level of skill to understand. Ive been producing for 5 years now and would consider myself only an intermediate level in knowledge but I always learn tremendous amounts from people like you who tell it straight forward without any crazy musical terms or things i need to google halfway through the video. Keep on simplifying your explanations into pictures like you did in this video. Definitely the best way to learn.
The best tape plugin period !
I've been looking for a good tape plugin and haven't been able to find one I really like. I think this one might just be it. Thanks for sharing dude
Fantastic tutorial, had this vst from day one and I’m getting now so many things I did not know I could do with it
Great walkthrough of a great plugin, thanks!
Excellent tutorial! I've been using Satin for a couple of years, but I had some things to learn hear. Very detailed presentation and smart explanation of important details. Thank you very much!
I have a high end Sony tape deck, a couple of tape recorders and a 4 track. On the recorder I put a potentiometer to control speed on tape loops (hand cut myself). This plug in has more than that, pretty cool.
The best review of this plug-in! I bought it and I am really happy with the explanation here. It's a great plug-in! I use it especially for acoustic piano and the results are amazing. Thanks again for your fantastic video and good luck 🤞.
Glad you’re highlighting this amazing tool. It’s been on my Master Out Bus ever since it came out!
Is it in there all the time, or just when you're mixing? I'm guessing it's more for saturation than as a delay / flanger
ben1210 All the time. But no delay/flange. I use one of the noise reduction profiles for color.
@@NedBouhalassaVideos deffo giving this a look, thanks for the reply
Wut! I was googling old 4 track recorders yesterday and you post this! Sweet...
This is my favorite tape plugin.
Really liking the in depth review. Very much appreciated!! cheers and happy new year
You’re demoes a great man! Appreciate what you do for sure. This is a VIBE maker 100%
Great tutorial! Much better explained than U-He unfortunately did themselves. Thank you.
That's a very cool plugin.... the delay especially. I love it. BTW - nice playing too :-)
BTW, tape speed affects the frequency range: faster = brighter. If you really want to hear other aspects/effects that are mostly heard when high frequencies are present, the speed should be at maximum.
You can almost think about it like sample rate (faster means more detail slower means less) its the same reason higher bpm Lp records are higher resolution
or just use pre-emphasis and gap width - you can make bright sound even at minimal IPS.
Thank you for that superb explanation and great (hearing) showcase of Satin 🌻
This is maybe still the most detailed and authentic tape emulation out there, but even satin fails to emulate the gradual tape wear that happens the more you play back the song... ;)
WavesFactory cassete have it, I still prefer Satin sound though, most of the time.
Combine both to make good lofi sound.
it really sounds lovely, thank you for sharing this :)
This is my favorite saturation plugin.
Great timing of this video. I have been looking for a VST to complement the Strymon Volante on my pedalboard. I think this is the one!
great video, great explanation 👌👌
perfect, just what I needed bro
Excellent video
Brilliant! Thank you!
Waves J37 Tape plugin is also very nice. I like you that and U-He Satin Tape both together for some even more tape effects
That was superb ❤️
u-He Satin is making life of my CPU misserable for years. ;-) Amazing product and totally recommened.
it was one of good reasons for me switch from fl studio to reaper - it's much easier to freeze/unfreeze tracks here (besides that it's just better daw)
@@izvarzone I have tryed both (also Ableton, Acid, Reason and so) and sticking with FL with love. Much superior daw for me (only Cubase is on par or even little better against FL). But in the end, only thing that matters is end result / music.
That's a great video..
Can you tell me how the atmosphere or the kind of soundscape in the background of the song at the end of the video it is made?
Thank you for all the amazing videos!
Great channel mate! Love Satin and U-he Stuff, a Presswerk vid would be appreciated!
Sooo smoothhhh
do you think maping an instrument to the balance knob would maybe be able to let you use the pan left right balance knob as a stereo spreader
Every time you play some "random" chords just to show how does it sound I feel like "wow, why this sounds so amazing, I want to build a track on top of that" - please share your secret :D it any special scale? is it voicing of the chords? literally everything you play has a vibe that resonates with my soul :D
宇宙愛 yes I'm not a keys player. I'm more like a beginning beatmaker, i use ableton push to play chords and stuff, still it doesn't sound the same ;)
@宇宙愛 I'm not your little friend, but thanks anyway maestro.
@宇宙愛 pompous. you nailed it.
宇宙愛 get off your high horse
I need the Midi from the playing between 9:10-9:20. Just beautiful
TacoTacoTacoTaco 😊
This may be the next VST I get
very cool
Love it! What piano are you playing in this tutorial? Sounds nice.
Nevermind! Just saw the answer a few comments below:)
love satin
10:19 definitely can create perfect feedback loops in Logic with this
Thanks!
Goddamn this video is hypnotizing.
Is this similar enough to the Strymon Deco - been looking for a VST version of that
It pretty much is the plugin equivalence of Deco, tape saturation, multihead delay and modulation, limiting and all the subtle imperfections of a tape machine.
@@XiyuYang Thanks for the insight!
I've been using Satin on the master on almost everything I've done for years now.
Same here. It's the greatest plugin ever. I use it on the master, and each track individually. It's great at smoothing out harsh sounds, and fixes the terrible ills of digital reverb.
Lb M Can you elaborate on the differences and even recommend a vst reverb ? My favorites are Valhalla and KhS for Mono Verb
@@urigeheadmot1196 Sure, the best one out is relab Lx480, it simply doesn't get any better than this and it's pretty much a 1:1 replica of the machine built in the 80s still in use in studios today.
Also, I use Altiverb. I bought it a long time ago so I'm probably a a version behind, but it's still great at getting you any type of impulse response you could ever want.
Also you might want to demo Breverb 2. Its decent and can get some good results, but to me Lx480 has completely taken its place.
thank you for the vid ...bet the yearly maintenance costs of this are high :P
What do you call the sound of the keys you are playing
which electric piano vst are you using?
Distracted on how good this camera is
What are those electric piano keys you’re using?
i wanna know too
+1
Scarbee A-200 from Native Instruments
Slodhachan got it. Scarbee A-200 (the wurly)
What synth is that on your desk?
what kind of piano are u using on this demo? : )
@erik josander he plays the Roland FP10 as a midi controller
Where did you buy your laptop stand?
what laptop stand?
How does it compare to the XLN RC-20?
satin is better
3:59 you just got a notification from outlook
my preamp gives me all the noise I need and way more
a nice pseudo electric piano sound as well..
🎹😍
8:26 Mod Amt is the amount of modulation to the sound; it has nothing to do with the distance of the repro heads.
Who said it has something to do with distance of repro heads?
And ur wrong mod amt is the modulation (sine wave) modulating the distance (the delay time see the led visualization) parameter
as the tape delays changes in delay time also causes pitch fluctations modulation causes lofi-ness
@@aabc "Who said it has something to do with distance of repro heads?" He did at 8:26, which is wrong. The Mod Amt modulate the pitch of the delayed signal only, not the distance of the heads at all, so no change in delay time as a result when you change the Mod Amt value. The LED visualization is misleading. If you have Satin, fire one up and see it for yourself.
@@SheldonTam pff because satin uses distance for the time parameter
Lemme ask you where in the plugin do u see the delay time parameter? Delay time in the sense the gap between each repeat that is normally in ms or time divisions.. If u ever used satin , in satin the "distance" parameter = time parameter u see the dots in the distance slider? Those are the time divisions and if u know music well modulation in any delay plugin is the slight modulation of the "delay time" that causes pitch fluctations
Hence its not pitch modulation just go read the manual its the "delay time or distance" modulation and as its a tape delay u hear pitch fluctations
@@SheldonTam HERE I QUOTED THE DELAY TIME AND MODULATION PARAGRAPHS FROM THE MANUAL FOR YOU..
distance-
These sliders set the distance (in inches) between each repro head and its corresponding record head. More distance means longer delay. The delay times depend on the current tape speed (the faster the tape speed, the shorter the delays) except in Tempo Sync mode...
When Tempo Sync (see previous page) is active, clicking anywhere on the track of the slider then dragging left or right will snap to 16th-note values. Note that the centre position corresponds to 4/16 i.e. a quarter note. When the slider is clicked and dragged in the normal manner, you can set arbitrary values and/or fine tune them by holding down SHIFT beforehand.
mod rate / mod amount-
The distance i.e. length of each delay can be independently modulated by a sine wave LFO. Use this feature whenever you need extra movement or more ‘organic’ textures. Careful editing of the modulation parameters here can even result in stunning, reverb-like dispersion effects.
@@SheldonTam if u have satin u can try it for yourself as well just go and keep the mod rate low meaning slower delay time changes and keep the mod amount maximum to hear obvious effects .. you will clearly hear the delay time sometimes coming quickly sometimes getting more late meaning delay time (hence pitch) fluctations
Is free?
Talk to much more sound
It's cool how VST can mimick hardware. But all sound 1 dimensional.
Tell that to guys like Andrew scheps and Grammy winning engineers who mix in the box now.
@@curtischarles5299, Don't need to tell them. They know.
@@clolo4615 yea, with their grammy's and their one dimentional sound huh..
@@curtischarles5299 Obviously you didn't get what i meant. So let it be.
what is 1-dimensional?
So, as a saturation plugin is just meh, and as a delay, there are way better options... I think this is the only one plugin from U-he that not convince me to use.
Which delays do you recommend? :)
It’s really not intended as an obvious saturation plugin. It’s brilliant on the master bus, drum sets and shines at smoothing out harsh vocals.
I don’t use it as a delay, but all in all it’s my most used u-he plugin by far. :)
satin is subtle effect, sounds nice when you combine with other saturation plugins.
Why did you choose this synth to test on? It's not obvious what plugin does to HF, еven with HI-MID cause sound is very thin and totally lack of HF, and, sir, sorry, but you really shoud spend more time figuring out some basics of how tape works.
