Great build and very innovative use of a drill bit with spiral flutes. There have been a lot of makers with straight flutes, but I like the spiral, and old bits are fairly easy to come by. Thanks and cheers! Someone should forward this vid to homemade tools.
With no doubt, the very best tap. I know because I made some myself in desperation, on weekends where I need it one and every shop were shut, but the cheapest tap would do the job in good hands.
Great job my friend! You left out only one thing, tempering. it is very important that the tool is not brittle, because one wrong move can break the teeth. in the case of tool steels, they undergo multi-step hardening, which makes the material very resistant. great job by the way!
For tempering steel that needs to stay very hard, like for a tap, sometimes just boiling water is hot enough, and if that leaves it to brittle, an oven at 150 degrees C might work
The old way of screw cutting took skill and a sharp brain, it's scandalous how the salary of a toolmaker or machinest was so average for such a skilled job. Dying breed nowadays
Very good idea, and better job ... i only ask how much oxygen was used, and how much would be instead cost a commercial tap ... ( of course not to deal with taps that are really "hard to find" on the market ... ). Note : a test with a blind bore would be much more relevant, as spiral taps are expecially designed for that type of holes ... Thank you very much in any case for your usefull lesson, i really appreciated both the heat treatments of common drills ...
You should note that drill diameter are actually slightly smaller than stated size and tap diameters are slightly larger, so take care for a screw to fit the tapped hole!
Damn fine work! That was some quality stuff. It's also nice to see someone that actually does things correctly and properly when it comes to machining and metal working. Nowadays I see so many people on the interweb UA-cams that cut corners, force things, and sometimes simply just don't know what they are doing. Then they make videos and pass those bad habits on to others 😢. I also appreciate that you know how to correctly grind your own lathe bits which is something that all machinist should at least know how to do whether they use indexable bits or not. That is definitely a dying art. You are quite impressive my good sir, keep up the good work! 👍👏😊

The drill bit must be carbon steel, inferior to high speed, you wont soften high speed steel, needs hardening and tempering exactly right or it will be too brittle and break, or too soft on tougher metals Also good chance of it binding as all taps are 'backed off' mic one up and you'll see
Roberto Udo Krapf
That’s a very wonderful creation Sir, any thing handmade is a marvellous thing I believe. Could you post some reference to the refractory tiles you were using please.
Magnificent work.I need to make an m20 nut. I'm going to take advantage of the idea and do it with a 22 inch drill that I have in the workshop ... ( Not inches 22 m/m diameter )
Pozdrawiam

Do I understand correctly that first you release the metal (remove the quench), and then re-quench after processing? Cool work, but for those who have a welding machine or a heating furnace.
Heated and left to cool to a anneal the hardened metal, then after it was quenched in oil that steals some carbon from oil for hardness but it quickly cools the steel to lock in the rearranging molecules.

Sorry, not worthwhile at all. Btw, you should use grinding machine instead of lathe to make thread. HSS steel doesn't need oil as a cooling medium. Liquidifed Corbin dioxide can work.

Brilliant, that's the way. Do it yourself. I could not bye a tap for a assitaline gas bottle in South Africa. So I made one.

Most TiN-coated drills are not real M2 or M3 HSS, so your tap is probably alloy. HSS is air-hardening, so it's very difficult to anneal.
HSS or Cast iron can be easily (not- really) Annealed by Submerging it into Limestone powder just after Reaching Red hot temp.
This cannot be a cheap drill to start with,as some are just coated to make them look expensive.
@@VINOGRA that is oxygen-acetylene torch which is up to 3200°C.
@@kieranh2005 yes can reach those temps but this one was bearly turned on (still hot but not that hot)
