I found Elijah Craig barrel proof at Costco in Wisconsin a month ago. $55/bottle. It’s such a good pour. Even neat, it’s smooth. Of all the places, I’ve found more rare bottles at Costco then anywhere else in the last 5 years and by a long shot.
Had a grocery store make an oops. Knob Creek barrel proof for $29. Yes, $29. I even asked a manager if it was mispriced. "Nope, it's the price I was sent." Ok, thanks, I'll take three.
Talk about a small win! As a point of clarification, Knob Creek is bottled at 120proof in some variations. Which isn't far from it's barrel proof version which can be around 125-135.

I must live in a lucky market, walked in to total wine and got Elijah craig c919 in April 2020 and down the road at a local store they’ve had stagg jr sitting on the shelf for weeks
Everything remotely special or limited release gets bought up quick here in southern CA, no matter the price (Stagg Jr, most store picks, etc.). The only thing that doesn’t is Elijah Craig Barrel Proofs for some odd reason, it’s fairly easy to find even batches from 1-2 years ago you can find on store shelves.
Love the 1920...that said my local bottle shop seemingly has a endless supply of ECBP at retail. I would take any batch of ECBP over 1920 for an extra $10 all day long. That said, l have a bottle of 1920 on the shelf, always.

Maybe because I was drinking Very Old Barton Kentucky Mules. :-) My only .02 would be to try to keep in mind that there may be some bourbon newbies tuning in so taking a second or two 'for the new folks to bourbon' to quickly explain any acronyms most of us take for granted. The explanation of MGP was close but it was never stated what it actually stood for. I know myself but just saying. I've been drinking bourbon for over 30 years but just within the last year or so started to actually 'learn' about bourbon. So stuff like - what is barrel proof, single barrel, small batch, mash bill....MGP, what does the 101 mean in Wild Turkey 101. I work in the I.T. field and as difficult as it can be to remember for someone doing something for over 20 years, I try my best to explain things in simple terms but still get the knowledge across. Sorry for the ramble...remember the part about drinking...? ;-)
Check out my post i list quite a few that were mentioned. Add wild turkey 101, repeal batch from jim beam, old forrester 1920, ancient age, jack d barrelproof
My Father owns a Liquor Store in TN and it amazes us how many people sleep on the George Dickel line. The No.12 for the price is amazing, and even the No. 8 is a great mixer. The GD BIB was named Whisky of the year in 2019. I think the stigma of the name Dickel turns people off I guess. In blind tastings it consistently does better than most people expect.
The Evan Williams line is an excellent readily available family and Wild Turkey line is also really good but a little bit peppery for me. Another good option is the Old Forrester.
Eric Sutton I mean no disrespectful and I know taste is individual and subjective, however I wonder if you have actually tried any of the Evan Williams whiskeys. Of all their whiskeys, the 100 proof bottled in bond is absolutely excellent. However their other whiskeys aren't fit to pour down the drain. At least they got one right and actually produced a excellent whiskey.
I really appreciate this segment. IMHO, the 2ndary market has ruined things for true bourbon lovers, and I can no longer find, or afford bourbons I used to drink.

@Daniel Barbee Are you referring to the EC age statement brand that was dropped about two years ago? I can't remember the exact age statement number though. It was replaced by the EC Small Batch.
No this is not out there anymore. It was in the late 90's to around 05 or 06. Real pretty bottle with blue filigree around the label and I think the front label was blue paint and the back was paper with the year bottled written on it.
Looked it up. Bottle looked a lot like the 18 and 23 year bottles. OMG I remember it being 30 or 40 bucks. Bookers was 50 and change and George T Stagg was around 70. Crazy how prices shot up. I liked knob Creek a lot and remember it going up around 10 bucks over a couple months. Was getting all these in northern VA. Spent a lot of money on food, drink and cigars back then.

Have had the MGP distillery discussion with many of whisky drinker and we all seem to feel that it is misleading to sell your "Whistle Pig MGP" as a true small distillery product, especially when the words on the bottle make your mouth water for a taste of home, then you find out that your whiskey is made at Wal-Mert. Should be labeled that it is made by MGP.
Everythings all find & dandy but let's go with AMERICAN OWNED Distilleries. Jack, Woodford, Old Forester, Coopers along with Evan Williams, Tired of Japan buying everything we hold dear to our hearts
I know there's others like Elijah Craig, but I quit drinking Japan "owned" companies such as Beam, Turkey & others.... on a different note anyone taste Leadslingers
There are two different taste preferences in whiskey, old and new. I'm a member of the new whiskey fans. For 37 years until he died, I bought 14 day aged whiskey from a bootlegger in Western North Carolina. It was absolutely the BEST whiskey I ever drank. Beyond 3 years, I can't tell the difference. For me, the old whiskey tend to lose their taste. New whiskey, for me, have many more facets in taste. My bottom shelf favorite is definitely Evan Williams 100 proof bottled in bond followed closely by Rebel Yell 100 proof bottled in bond. Everybody distills 80 proof whiskey so they have something cheap to sell to the alcoholics.
That's what the bottle says, but taste-wise it passes for one. Here's what one internet source says: "Jack Daniel's chooses not to call itself bourbon, but the historic brand applies for federal label approval under the class of bourbon and Tennessee whiskey is listed as straight bourbon in the North American Free Trade Agreement"
@@offthetrailphotography5915 there isn't anything that technically disqualifies it as a bourbon. But we're splitting hairs here. It's still good whiskey.
@@BourbonPursuit charcoal filtering it disqualifies it as being bourbon, always has, always will... technically charcoal filtering disqualifies it from being bourbon. But what do I know, I have only been drinking the stuff for almost 29 years lol And the whole 29 years I have been drinking it, everything I have ever read regarding the defining rules of bourbon says if it is charcoal filtered, it is NOT bourbon
Calling it "Tennessee Whiskey" instead of bourbon seems to be a source of state pride and a marketing choice. If the company wanted to call it bourbon they could (AFAIK) do so without breaking any rules. I think Jack tastes fine, but I think of it as being the same kind of liquor as Jim Beam, Wild Turkey, etc. The more we get hung up on labels, the more removed we are from the actual thing itself.
I hate watching noobs like these guys talking about WT MK releases being ‘low proof’ having now clue about how low entry proof works and how barrels can proof down during aging (more so for older barrels aged lower in Rick houses). The fallacy of thinking the closer to neutral grain you get the more flavor you get is just ignorance of the subject
JD Barrel Proof is swill. People who say it's good don't know anything about whiskey and never add water to their whiskey, so they don't really taste it and they just want high proof to numb their taste buds.
not every whisky needs water, not even every cask strength, there is also such thing as strong or weak palate, which determines the optimal serving to the person
@@igloo2862 heh.. do you realize the amount of casks they need to taste regularly? They wouldn't live for long if they would taste them neat. More important to understand what you are doing and why.

I know its been 8 months since you you posted this video, but if anyone likes this list these guys presented, get your hands on Redemption 9 yr old, 109 proof - and - Bull Run 129 proof. If you like Rare Breed or JD SiB BP, you should like these. Cheers My Brothers!
Being educated is half the battle. Now many more people are becoming smarter about reading the back of the label.
Dude’s in his wife’s pantry doing a bourbon show
Knob creek is bourbon.
Too bad I'm on the wagon
Blood oath #6
Blood Oath will surprise a few folks
Keep going. you can find lots of differences between ages and distilleries.
Hold bottle longer, still, so we can read the name. Better yet, sit it on a pedestal.
Jack Daniel is Tennessee whiskey not Bourbon!🥃
That's what the bottle says, but taste-wise it passes for one. Here's what one internet source says: "Jack Daniel's chooses not to call itself bourbon, but the historic brand applies for federal label approval under the class of bourbon and Tennessee whiskey is listed as straight bourbon in the North American Free Trade Agreement"
Same mash bill as a Bourbon just like George Dickel. Only difference is it goes through the Lincoln County Process which is they charcoal filter.
lol @ these guys being all self deprecating like they're not hotties
Jack Daniels is NOT F'king bourbon
or is it? Listen to our podcast with Master Distiller of Jack Daniel's, Jeff Arnett.
@@BourbonPursuit if its charcoal filtered its not... He can say what he wants, ( and I will listen) but if it is charcoal filtered, it is not bourbon
A year later jack daniels drops a 10 year! 😂
Lol
not every whisky needs water, not even every cask strength, there is also such thing as strong or weak palate, which determines the optimal serving to the person
Yurius I “optimal” serving is based on your preference, but real tasters (like tasters that work in the distillery) all add water
@@igloo2862 heh.. do you realize the amount of casks they need to taste regularly? They wouldn't live for long if they would taste them neat.
More important to understand what you are doing and why.
Yurius I they don’t swallow it anyway...
Is J in a closet?
This dude put bourbon & a Barrell in a closet, put a blazer on and no pants, this shit makes me laugh
Its nice seeing children discuss the quality of the candy..........see you when you get old enough for the entree(scotch)
