I saw your reaction to Nightwish, and I loved it! I'd never seen/heard them before, and I am now a fan. I like a little bit of most genres of music but only like a bit of metal. One of my favorite live performances of a metal band is Metallica with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra from 1999. I remember when the cd/DVD came out. I bought it right away. I wore the cd out!I Anywho, I would LOVE to see your reaction to one of the songs from this performance. Here's a link to No Leaf Clover performed by Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. Thanks so much for your reactions/analysis!!! ua-cam.com/video/LDCrPDNCqaI/v-deo.htmlsi=CE2yncl3rfcapTZy

Dan Vasc with his unmistakable, unique, beautiful voice. A thoroughbred musician through and through. He brings his own spirit to every cover song. The professionalism and quality he gives us is indescribable. As this song proves. I actually prefer this powerful voice to the Original. Thanks for sharing and the great analysis. Highly recommended is Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. It will blow you away 🤘♥️

You’re going to absolutely love Dan’s “Loch Lamond”. “Amazing Grace” is a must. And “Burn Butcher Burn” is my personal favourite for watching people react to the song. (Sound of Silence, Nessun Dorma, Music of the Night, I’ll make a Man out of You and Dawn of Victory are worth mentioning as well.)

Thanks for the detailed analysis. It’s great to listen to people who understand what they’re hearing. I love these quieter songs from Dan. For your next one, I would suggest Burn Butcher Burn, or I’ll Make a Man Out of You, both “metalized” versions that really show off both his singing and acting chops. Another brilliant one is his latest, Celine Dion’s lovely but weepy My Heart Will Go On, which he completely transforms. I’m looking forward to your next encounter! Thanks so much. Edited to add: if you’d like a look at Dan’s musical theatre persona, consider The Music of the Night, or Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar.

Dan is an astounding talent with a very eclectic catalog. His Nessun Dorma is magnificent with a powerful tenor voice. Gethsemane is powerfully acted as well as sung and he blows away Ted Neely's version. Phantom of the Opera is also powerful.

Thank you for your reaction & insightful comments about Dan's version of this classic, beautiful S&G song. I love both versions, as well. Dan also did a cover of Disturb's version of the S&G song "The Sound of Silence" and it's really good, too. If you like the acoustic, folk song sound, Dan & his band mate/friend Gabriel Belozi started a special venture called Spyglass Inn for those types of songs a few years ago & plan to resume doing songs on it again in the near future from what Dan stated last yr. So far, they've done The Bard's Song, Loch Lomond, and Lord of the Rings (if I recall correctly LOTR is part of that venture). He's also done separately a cover of Ed Sheeran's "I See Fire" & Billy Boyd's song "The Last Goodbye" from The Hobbit movies. Both are great.
Of course, many of us were introduced to Dan last year with his unbelievably moving version of Amazing Grace, which I highly recommend, as well.

As always, I totally LOVE your reaction AND your analysis. Great job!
One of the interesting things, though, about BOTH of the two versions (S&G and DV -- grin), is that there's something that a WHOLE lot of people don't know at all, because they're not familiar with really OLD folk tunes. I've known this song since I was TINY (and I was born in 1949). In recent years, when people started talking about it being "written by" S&G, I started researching the song and its origins, with the following results.
    - - - - - - - - - -
The song's usual name ( "Scarborough Fair" ) is sometimes simply called "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme," which is taken from the refrain. The song itself originally spawned from an old tradition of English riddle songs, in which the singer would ask his true love to perform impossible tasks (to prove out his/her love).
The now-famous Simon and Garfunkel version of Scarborough Fair makes their version sound like a tender love song, but (to those in-the-know) the lyrics suggest a harsher tone. Those lyrics may seem strange to modern ears, but (as mentioned above) they come from a long tradition of old English "riddle songs," such as had been popular since at least the Middle Ages.
    -- THE LORE --
The singer is thinking of a former lover who lives in Scarborough. He asks a friend who is going to Scarborough Fair, to "remember him to" (or to stop by and check up on) his former lover who lives in the town. Why, though, does he want to be remembered?!
The wistful, innate beauty of the song's melody gives the impression of a deep love song in which the young man may be yearning for a love that is lost to him. However, the lyrics run contrary to this. They are actually a series of nonsense rhymes, through which the "true love" will be asked to perform impossible tasks. Only IF she performs these tasks will she BE his “true love” again. Clearly, she will NOT be able to perform the given tasks...so what is the point of even asking her?! Is he sneering at her? Is this a kind of medieval brush off along the lines of: “Tell her she’ll be my true love again when Hell freezes over and pigs start flying?!” Hmmm...
    -- ORIGINS --
Who originally wrote this song? It was definitely NOT S&G!
    -- FACTS and FIGURES --
Many versions of "Scarborough Fair" have been around since the Middle Ages. Beyond that, it was one of most popular songs of the folk revival in the 1950s and 60s. However, it was not widely known, outside of folk music circles, until it was recorded by Simon and Garfunkel in 1966. Their version was then featured on the soundtrack of "The Graduate."
Many artists, over a LONG period of time, made use of the original, very loosely changing different things as they needed to, for their own purposes. Bob Dylan came across Scarborough Fair when he visited England in the early sixties but he never recorded it in any version of its original state. Instead, he used it as the INSPIRATION for a NEW song ("Girl from the North Country") which he released on his album "The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan," in 1963. In that song, the Scarborough Fair INFLUENCE is quite apparent, although it is a different song, over-all.
As for the reference of the Fair in the first place (from WAY back when), here is the info about that location: Scarborough is located on the northeast coast of England and is now a popular seaside resort. In medieval times, it was an important market town, where a massive fair (which would begin in August, and would run for six weeks) was staged every year. It attracted traders from all over England, as well as from northern Europe in general.
This practice began to decline in the early 17th century. Despite attempts to keep it going, it finally closed, in 1788.
    - - - - - - - - - -
So there you have it. DV definitely based his "cover" on the way that S&G put THEIR "cover" together, which was based pretty closely to what is generally-well-known (in folk-singer circles) as what would have been "the original version." How did I learn it, so early on? My mom and her sisters used to sing it all the time (back in the 1930s), and it was passed down in OUR family, through them. The little folk band that I started in 1965 (with two of my best friends who were also music-based since early childhood) did NOT know anything about S&G's cover of the song, since it wasn't released until 1966. We DID, however, know at least some of the above history and lore, from the "ancient times" when it was originally sung. 😀

Thank you 😃 And for the lovely information!
Very interesting to learn it's been around since the middle ages 🤯 I would love to know exactly what the fair was like, all those centuries ago!
As mentioned in the vid, I refer to S&G's version as a cover in itself, and then decided to call the S&G cover the 'original' for the sake of ease (saying "...cover of a cover version" seems a bit unnecessarily lengthy 😅) - and because Dan's covering specifically the S&G version rather than any other version. People I know who know the S&G version don't think S&G wrote the song (although I definitely did when I first heard it as a wee lad, as it was the first time hearing any version of Scarborough Fair 😉) 🎶

Your homemade Capo gave me a giggle. Great idea! Interesting that Dan put rests in his version on the opening line. Makes the flow feel so much different. Dan's soft tenor voice is beautiful. I didn't expect that because of his background in metal rock. I also love folk music, acoustic guitar but the added bass guitar was a nice touch. He had to sneak in a more metal bassline. I caught you singing along, who couldn't? Nice, very nice reaction. Thank you!

Since you said you were interested in his acoustic covers, “Priscilla’s Song” would be right up your alley, and for a big change, he does a metal version as well. That would definitely give you insight to his musical process. There is just so much for you to listen to with Dan - “Amazing Grace”, “My Heart Will Go On”, “Oh, Holy Night”, etc. Honestly, you might as well just listen to his whole catalog of music. Thank you, for this detailed analysis and comparison! I've always enjoyed S&G's version and Dan's rendition is one of my favourite covers of his. Very interesting to know of the slight changes Dan made.
As for recommendations: definitely check out Dan's other acoustic covers on said playlist and if you want your socks to be blown off watch his "Nessun Dorma" - yes, even opera is to be found in his catalogue and also his performance of "Gethsemane" from Jesus Christ Superstar.
For harsh metal vocals I suggest "Bring Me To Life" and "Poker Face" and to witness the insane breath control he still has at the end of a song check out "Black Wind Fire and Steel" - he held the last note for 30 freaking seconds with full power.
He also did "Bohemian Rhapsody", I'm sure there are not many out there who can do Freddy Mercury justice.
The list could go on and on and on, but for I'll leave you with those tips 😉

I am not metal, but I like a lot of what Dan does. I mentioned that Dan did Amazing Grace. You just did Home Free’s version. I think you would like Dan’s interpretation. ☺️ Dan does seem more emphatic in his version, maybe not as “delicate” as the original. BUT he doesn’t to seem to be the delicate type. 🙂 He definitely makes his version INTERESTING!

Gorgeous! My biggest “complaint” is the incomplete title of ‘Scarborough Faire/Canticle’. Because the Canticle was added for the 1968 S&G release. Scarborough Faire as performed in 1947 did not include the war protest counterpoint of the canticle. But like I said, minor point. Overall Dan did a fantastic cover of the song. And you did great in breaking it down. Not sure I would have caught all those minor tweaks.

Papa Lin was on the same show as Dimash, "I Am Singer" in 1997. He sang the version I listen to the most. It's even more beautiful to me because he sings it in Mandarin and then English. His transitions in Mandarin are so beautiful to me. ❤❤❤

For me the difference between the two performances is a matter of feeling vs message. Dan Vasc's voice is powerful, and this cover reminds me of early 60's folk music, like Greenback Dollar by the Kingston Trio - a strong, belted message. In Simon and Garfunkel's version, the voices blend with the instruments and create a dreamy, nostalgic feeling, a reverie. This song and many others by S &G make up the soundtrack of The Graduate, my favorite soundtrack ever.

I grew up with my Simon & Garfunkel knowledge really coming from the recording of the concert in Central Park…this is the very first time I’ve heard the countermelody (even though I can sing all of the rest of the words, etc). I honestly thought this was something Dan had added.

Since you've analyzed the original i think you should check out Dans version of Nightwish - Ever Dream. He has a lot of Nightwish covers and they're all great. I suggest also checking out the singer Erik Grönwall, he's done a song with Dan "Breaking The Silence". I think you would really enjoy his cover of "i will always love you".

I loved your detailed analysis. Thank you so much! Dan leaves nothing to chance in his covers, not any note. He chose the accent spoken in the area where the song originally comes from, which means a lot considering that he's from Brazil. Dan's metal covers of non-metal songs are truly amazing, as well as his male covers of female songs. That's why I'd appreciate your reaction to his "Rolling In The Deep" - ADELE cover.

If you want to see how Dan metallizes a song, check out Priscilla’s Song from The Witcher. He does it true to the original and then he transformed it into a metal version. Both versions are awesome. They are totally different but really good.

I grew up in a home where we listened to a lot of music and this original Simon & Garfunker record was played a lot. This particular song has always been one of my favorite songs. Dan Vasc makes the song even better. just like Disburned has done for the song "Sound of silence" ua-cam.com/video/u9Dg-g7t2l4/v-deo.htmlsi=g9HKKe_wOH250c8X

In case you want to listen to a remarkable version of ‘Scarborough Fair’ with a Brazilian 60’s flair, check the song ‘Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - Scarborough Fair (Official Visualizer)’. This is not a recommendation to reaction/analysis, but I’ll mention it here just because it’s something beautiful and worth to be known by those who enjoy this song :)

Please watch Terry Lin singing this song on "I AM SINGER 2017." He was also a contestant the same year Dimash joined the program. His English pronunciation is excellent considering that he is a Chinese/Taiwanese. The Dears call him papa Lin because he was like a father to Dimash during the competition. Although they were competitors, he was very supportive and genuinely proud every time Dimash step on the stage.
Terry Lin also covered "OPERA 1" or simply called "OPERA" and it was so amazing.

Thank you for another thoughtful and informative reaction. I truly enjoy watching reactions from people who know what they are talking about and share their knowledge and expertise. When you pointed out Dan's emphasis on the line about the gun, it occurred to me, as someone who was around back when the original was released, that guns are a much bigger issue now than they were back then. Perhaps that's part of the reason for the emphasis? Who knows? Anyway - thank you for the reaction. I look forward to more!
