    Joost Klein is Groot! He dedicated this song to his father who died when he was 12 years old. His dad taught him that the world has no true boundaries. His mother died when he was 13. He is a HUGE inspiration to young folks, he is such a legend. The world needs more people like Joost. He has gone through so many challenges in life it is a true inspiration to see how he deals with it. Joost Klein is Groot!

    This song is a letter to his parents.
    “Europapa (which means Europepe, but papa is Dutch for “dad”)
    Also he is singing about being in Germany but still alone “Ich bin in Deutschland aber ich bin still alein” and he is in Italy but still feeling pain. Because he is missing his parents.
    At the end of the song he is saying “at the end we are all human, my dad once said its a world without borders. I still miss you everyday is what I secretly whisper, but see dad, I listened”
    He always said to his dad he would make it to the Eurovision, but his dad passed away when Joost was 12.
    And now he is on the stage.
    Also the line “we are in a world without borders” is what this song is about.

    As said before: Little bit of background on Joost. He was creative from a very young age and also a bit different. His father said that there are no boundaries and he should follow his dreams. They always watched the Eurovision Songfestival together so as a kid he replied that his dream would be to go to the Eurovision Songfestival. Then his dad passed away when he was 12 and his mother when he was 13. For inspiration and acceptance of the loss of his parents he travelled trough Europe. Therefore he sings that the pain and emptiness stayed with him no matter where he went. He paid for mental help but it did not work for him. Still he managed to be a very positive and joyful person as reflected in this song. He sings about the song Papaoutai from Stromae that is also about missing his father. In all of this he managed to combine lot's of cultural aspects of different European countries and the Netherlands. There is even a Max Verstappen reference. Without the layer of his personal life you will notice that a lot of elements can directly be related to the European countries. The young boy and the old man represent him and his father struggling trough life and his father being an example for him. The final emotional scene represents him as a kid and his father when it all ended, the burning of the family photo and the building represents that you need to move on in life and not get stuck in the past. In the end he tells that he listened to his father (there are no borders for your dreams) and refers to him going to the Eurovision Songfestival. So winning would be optional, his goal was participation.

    For people who don’t speak Dutch this song is really hard to understand, but he travels in the song across Europe, because his father told him there are NO borders anymore. ( it’s not a joke, this song is real deep ).
    And another funny thing about the clip, almost every person in the clip is a famous artist in the Netherlands.
    Paul Elstak, Stien, Donny, René Froger, and many more.

    I see a lot of people in the comments misinterpreting the true meaning of this song.
    How he describes his song is as follows: it’s about an orphan (he did not specifically say that the orphan is himself, but I think it has a lot to do with himself) writing a letter to his parents/father. His father told him that in this world there are no borders/boundaries and that the borders we know have been made up by humans. If humans can make borders, than he himself could make his own borders and create his own world as well. When his parents were still alive he would watch eurovision with them and told them that one day he would be on that stage as well.
    Anyways, he finally made it to eurovision with the help of his fathers message that there are no boundaries and that it is up to him to create his own world/future.
    For his entire life he has been carrying the pain that he has from the passing away of his parents. In the song he is basically talking about how he is going to everywhere, fleeing from himself, but he can’t get rid of the pain. ‘I’m in germany, but i still feel alone, i’m in italy, but i still feel pain.’ I don’t need escargots, i don’t want fish&chips, i don’t need paella. ‘I’m fleeing from myself, i even give people money, but still there is no one that can help me’.
    Now that he has made it to eurovision, it is finally time to let go of his pain and move on with life. It is like the ending of a long painfull chapter. And he tells his dad that he has listened to him as well (the no borders thing). Hence the burning down of the family picture and the house he grew up in. It seems sad, but to me it feels more like he is finally ready to start a new chapter in life.

    First review with someone who has a good eye on art.
    Eurovision has seen some lows in the Netherlands. It hasn't been cool enough for a long time.
    The sheer bad management of how people in the Netherlands sometimes get chosen for eurivision. Combined with the falling out of fashion of making something very dutch, with the language and stuff. Make clear why this is a unique one for the dutchies.
    I think Joost made this song one of the rare dutch spoken songs in a while, where the dutchies themselfs can actually respect it enough to like it. Due to it's sheer dutchness of the product.
    It not only has some dutch visuals, the music itself and the style are a homage to the times of true dutch leadership in techno music during the 90s. Targetting a very specific mindset 'stereotype' seen a lot in the Netherlands.
    Then the serious story and visual representation are the showing of his true artistic view. A view that is quite broad and unique. It reminds me of 2011+s dutch music and the experimentation that was done with electronic, dutch spoken, rap music. There we had the upcoming of Yellow Claw and the famous dutch movie New Kids, where some of the worst dutch sterotypes got pumped up to a shocking and shameless comedy. And ofcourse happy hardcore was part of the movie. One of the main characters showed up on the telivision and Paul Elstsak shows up in the car. As he did in the movie.
    It really shows why dutch people, like me, still like this kind of experimental music.
    Then there is the serious undertone and I believe some multiple layer deep critique on the way Europe, but also really the Netherlands is undergoing a huge right winged wave. Where Europe sees an outcry of ideology where the fundementals of the union slowly drift further and further away. The 'dutch' building being covered in flames felt like a depiction of how the Netherlands is polarized to the max.
    Dutch culture and music isn't very strong in my opinion. Real art imo, comes when you start combining things and creating contrast. And the dutch are not very good at accepting things they do not understand nor justify. So really cool to see an actual unique artist from the Netherlands, focussed on making art, has been chosen for the eurovision.

    Like said before but all combined:
    Europe = Europa in dutch
    Dad = papa in Dutch
    Europapa is a combnation of these 2 words.
    Joost his father died at the age of 12 (his mother a year later)
    The kid in the clip is supposed to be Joost his younger self (when he was 12)
    The older guy in the clip is supposed to be his dad (If he had not past away)
    At the end he speaks to both, a youth photo of him is burning as well as his supposed to be house.
    I think the song also is about being proud to be European and we must stand together, especially now a part of Europe is indeed burning. A song with a smile and a tear.

    It’s fun and up beat, but at it’s core it’s a sad song about him missing his parents. Who died when he was very young. His dad thought him there are no borders. And while watching eurosong with them he told them he would preform there one time. They died when he was 12 and that’s why he dedicated this song to them.
    To me it’s more emotional with every listen.
