In other words, JJ's max level as a player with his work ethic in his era was a role player while a player like Elgin Baylor(who served in the military part of the season) became a hall of famer.

No he’s saying they didn’t have the skill compared to modern players. There were guys in the league that didn’t have a job and they weren’t all legends. The argument wasn’t that Jerry’s era was great it was that mad dog tried saying bob cousey was better than cp3

@@tyleredwards970 , that's silly. It's like saying Isaac Newton wasn't as intelligent and accomplished as a scientist as Stephen Hawking because he grew up in the 18th century without 21st century scientific knowledge and technology.
You can't compare eras. The 1950s and the 2020s NBA are two different styles of basketball play.
Put JJ in the 1950s having to live in that society along with having to adapt and play like 1950s players combined with making less money without modern sports medicine:
He would not be as good as Bob Cousy because Cousy had more athletic ability. Bob Cousy was the first great point guard in the NBA. Dude was the prototype and he excelled in his time.

He trying to say just cause JJ didn’t have a job like the plumbers he was talking about that he should’ve been Jerry west, but that doesn’t make any sense cause JJ made the comment to point out that the level of competition was nowhere near what it is today in the modern NBA. So, JJ could have been a real star in that time, but he couldn’t in the modern NBA because the talent is just miles better, much more elite than back then. Role players nowadays could’ve been near stars if not actual stars back then, that is how big the jump is from talent from then to now.

@@mrtevyoung22 , players could dribble with multiple hands then. The rules in the NBA didn't allow them, too. If you ever look at old clips of the Harlem Globetrotters, you will see players with Kyrie-like ball handling skills.
JJ was being disrespectful and talking out the side of the neck. JJ was a role player at his best in the league while players like Bob Cousy within the era he played and what technology was available excelled at the highest level. Imagine how better Cousy would have been if he had the resources of JJ Reddick and lived in the an era with modern sports medicine and technology? That's why Bob Cousy called him out when he said it's always the players with less talent who have the most to say.

Steve Kerr, Pat Riley and, Phil Jackson are players/ champions turned head coach. Steve Nash is a player that never saw championship success just like JJ. It will be another Nets situation where superstars that has a ring is going to say get this mf up outta here. Being a sports media influencer and working on a sports media network is scripted to a degree where they know the topics being discussed. The NBA playoffs and Finals is whole different situation because it’s real time with dealing with player’s attitudes, injuries and motives. Paul IG model comment is accurate the superstars today have the infinity glove power to snap a finger and in a blink of an eye the coach and multiple players are fired for what ever reason. Giannis and Lebron has been Thanos on multiple occasions in their career with the infinity gauntlet.

I don’t think it’s gonna work out I can’t see him out coaching 31 other nba coaches. I respect lebron game but he probably just retire and focus on helping his sons prepare for the nba league if that’s what they want to do. Lebrons done everything you can do in the league.

When they talk about the top wide outs to ever play the game 20 years from now...will Micheal Irvin even be mentioned? Yet we all know how great he was..
Same for Bob Cousey..he was a all time great 55 years ago..the game has changed but give credit to where it's due..he had no Kyrie to watch, no Zeke to watch, no AI to copy his game after he was one of one...there was no SI, no ESPN, no Inside the NBA to watch highlights..no NBA TV deal...these dudes played all 82, played 4 straight nights, rode trains & buses, took commercial flights, stayed at Holiday Inns not Ritz Carltons, the season playoffs included was over by May 1st . They had to get summer jobs because the pay wasn't great.
      Don't insult the trailblazers.

NBA ninjas don’t even know enough about the history of the game. Yes, they had side jobs. Do you still think that they played at the highest level when one race had limited opportunities to play in the league? What JJ said was correct, those guys would not be who they are without the restrictions from that error. If you don’t know, do some research. There is a reason that there are more black players in the 90’s than there were back then. The black players back then put up ridiculous numbers for a reason.

@donmacmilly people say that, but they couldn't get out of the 2nd round until Mark Jackson. They also didn't play defense or move the ball under him. He definitely built the foundation and unlocked the potential. But Steve Kerr turned that team into a dynasty

You can’t use career earnings as a measuring stick. They played in different times but at the same time. Like a max player now made way more then a player who is a legend in the early 2000s doesn’t make them better or close to them

I don't have an issue with JJ's historical takes. To me he says those things because a lot of historical greats trash today's players/game, I think JJ is just pointing certain things out. Specifically because old heads act like things that happen today never ever happened back then or the guys today are so much worse. JJ stands up for today's players, which I can appreciate, and takes shots right back.

My thoughts on jj's take on the old timers is he doesn't wanna waste time with the filler conversations about comparisons when he could easily babble for today's game for the whole show. Like he wants to talk xs and os and everyone is like "the first time we've seen this Statline since 1982"
