    gotta say. I'm completely new to tapping, love playing rock songs but have to leave out a lot because idk how to tap or even hammer/pull correctly. This lesson helped tremendously. I got it at a decent speed almost immediately and am going to continue practicing motions like the ones you talk about, hopefully I'm playing like Van Halen one day lol. Another thing, in videos like this it is very important to people you use a good speaker that isnt over the top but is still fun to listen to and learn from, and Alex spoke perfectly. wasn't bored and the whole video felt very clear. Thank you so much for this

    What effects are you using to get the volume and consistency when tapping, and what settings on those effects?

    • @guitarmastery
      @guitarmastery  5 років тому +28

      Hi Carl
      Thank you for the excellent question.
      Firstly, I cover this in the next part of this lesson series - and the course itself.
      However, most of the consistency comes from using a compressor. (I use the Xotic SP, but basically any will do).
      You need to set it fairly aggressive, but not so aggressive that you get a "click" sound when playing the strings.
      I hope this helps!

    The performances in the "Solo as Licks" sections. that come with The Tapping Project, are amazing. !! I seem to have always shied away from Tapping technique, because of my short fingers.. dann.. but the idea of using adjacent strings, or skipping strings to do the tap note, far easier to stretch and reach.. nice !! .. wow.. light went on brightly ! ... now I think I like the idea of Tapping, because I can do it a more ergonomic way.. I like that you included the score for the backing tracks written and with GPro.. Brilliant.. thank you.. btw.. I bought your course.. I love your style.. very nice.. and not at warp speeds.. bravo..

      I hope to see you write some awesome solos soon! ;)

Some people have the strings so sensitive that you player it like key board where the strings still hum when you hold down the finger.

      I started practicing today and i don't have any other equipment other than my amp, which is a boss katana 50, and it sounds just fine. Just gotta make sure you press hard enough and that you get your pull offs right!

  • @ZgemboBeterovic
    @ZgemboBeterovic 5 років тому +2

    Cool, but I always hold my pick (between thumb and middle finger) while practicing tapping since in over 90% of cases I'm going to need it after tapping part.

    • @guitarmastery
      @guitarmastery  5 років тому +1

      Agreed. That is also included in the full course.
      However, for the sake of learning to tap (and the drama). I suggest starting without the pick.

    • @ZgemboBeterovic
      @ZgemboBeterovic 5 років тому

      Index finger is more flexible so it's easier and more precise for pulling string in moment of "tapping off" and it's easier and also more precise to do slide with it after tapping (like on solo from White Lion - Wait.... song is garbage, but solo is great). I know I butchered this explanation but if you try drawing circles in air with index finger and than with middle finger you'll notice how easier is to do it with your index finger.
      And also if you need two fingers for tapping, you have more range with index and ring fingers than with middle and ring fingers working together.
      And yes, I know, Van Halen (and many others) uses middle finger so it's obvious that you can make it work but I don't have long fingers like Hendrix or Prince so I try to be as efficient and economic as possible :)

    • @guitarmastery
      @guitarmastery  5 років тому +1

      When first learning the technique, I find it easier to just get rid of the pick entirely, so you can focus on just the mechanics of tapping.
      It will then be easier to add the pick later on. I show ways to do this in the full course.
      Also, you would notice I play with the "wrong" finger, so I actually tap with my index finger, and therefore do not have to switch pick position at all. May be a little confusing for most people.
