Thanks for sharing these techniques! Truly one of my favorite teachers/players, and that you're willing to show the details at that level is super cool!!
you're amazing on fingerboard! great attentions to the palm mute , could you say something about this for that guys that are confused about both ? haha
David suzuki Reb tends to add a finger from his left hand, so the sound is more scalar. At least, that's how he did it back in the 80s with winger. He's probably added other techniques since then.
First of all, thanks a lot for these videos. I've been following your channel for a couple of weeks now and it has made me want to see if I can finally learn the tapping technique from your tapping lessons. However, I've got a question for you: How do you mute the strings you're not using anymore after you've tapped them, on this exercise? I tried to follow it but as soon as I began to move on to the other 5 strings, things started to get a bit "noisy". How do you keep them from making any unwanted noise? Thanks in advance, and cheers from Chile.
any available fingers/parts of the hand. Sometimes in the studio or really loud on-stage I'll use a hair tie, which have become really popular these days.
sympathetic vibrations are caused by playing an e,a,d ect.... note on another sting, the vibration causes the above E,a,d...string to ring out too. Its often phased out by palm muting every string above the live string on a down stroke, but ... on an up stroke the left index finger belly kinda does the trick, by using the face of your finger tip not the tip of the finger itself and letting the flesh touch (= mute) but not barre them. its not really said enough but when you start to learn, you KeeP TheM FingerS ARCHED ! is advice for clean chords perfect for a riff a shred or sweeps. forget it. ^^^ . just observations of an captivated student. good luck and hope the fun continually grows and usefull knowledge is shared.
I can't palm-mute when multi-finger tapping... how to solve this? In standard tapping your right-hand mutes the strings by laying on them, here I simply don't have enough hands to tap and mute
this guy Is great but not even close to Batio ...they dont compare ...this guy is a great guitar player...batio is a master of the instrument and of music knowledge
Michael is a monster, great guy and we both came out of the Chicago area! No desire to compete. Hopefully something will be useful from either/both of us.
At the end? Yes it is awesome. I’m still trying to figure out. He’s bending the hell, more than I thought. Even if i figured it out, I still wouldn’t be able to play, only when the technique feels comfortable, within my grasp.
Great technique! Ya know, you don't have to limit yourself to pentatonic here, have some fun and use this technique with other modes! The technique is awesome, great lesson.
At the end, when he adds his ‘right hand pinky’ it feels impossible to even practice. Your’e already hammer tapping with you’re index and ring finger. Adding another hammer tap with my pinky finger makes me realize it’s not even worth practicing. As if my right hand index, and middle finger tapping shouldn’t awkward enough from someone whos practiced fretboard gymnastic stuff since 80s almost everyday for decades. Olympic Fastfret competition race.. Agony of defeat.
It seems like much of this could be accomplished with three fingers stretched wide on the left hand and one finger on the right hand. It would be a different story if he were suing three or four fingers on the right hand, but he only uses two.
Joel is a great 🎸 teacher how he simply breaks it down in pieces!! Thank you ! My goal is to keep following your lead & duplicate every tap & nail all lessons 🎶🎸
Good dude, great player. That style and technique is like a gift. You either been doing since you was very young and it's now like second nature to do. Or just don't attempt it because it will never sound as smooth and flowing as he's doing it. It's just not a natural, flowing way to play music. I can tap very well and even for a 22 year player like myself, this technique is utterly useless to try and use. It's just always going to sound weak and messy, no matter how many hours or months you put into it. The ring finger on your right hand dominantly always wants to move parallel with the index and middle finger. And the height differences between fingers is a major factor in conjunction to the odd way you need to bend your hand/wrist while doing it. Unless your ring finger is at least 3/4 of an inch to 1 full inch shorter than your index finger, just don't even waste your time trying. It's a technique that people with odd hands, strange finger lengths and double joints can pull off. Also women usually can do this fairly easy as they have very short ring fingers. Joel plays it wonderfully because its like his *signature* move. He's been trying it and perfecting it since he was a kid. And the no pick thing while tapping is a major nope for me. Always keep your pick in your hand or (if you really must) hold it with your mouth. So the question is, are you willing to try this technique every day, 4 hours every day, for the next 20 years just to be able to use it in one or two solo's that nobody really is going to care about? After a month of easily 120 hours of trying it I can honestly say NOPE. The concept is simple. The idea is a no brainer to understand. But to make it fast and still sound clean and smooth?... Good luck.
If someone can help me... Sorry My English. I have a problem with this technique. When I try to tap , the notes with My right hand don't sound good , they sound very low , and Bad . Is it the guitar gear ? Or What can i do for them sound louder and clear this lesson way.
To make more clear what I mean... I'd like yo play two hands ichika nito way.. but is not possible in My guitar :( ( i'm not talking about all the skills , i mean the sound of any single note )
Bryan Millan a few tips... For one, make sure you’re tapping correctly. Pulling down slightly as you let the string go. Make sure you’re muting the unused strings with your left hand if you’re using a distorted sound. Also, make sure the action (the distance between the strings and the fretboard) isn’t too high. All in all, if your right hand hammer ons and pull offs sound fine, your tapping should sound fine too, as long as you’re muting. If this doesn’t help and you still have lots of noise or something, let me know.
I can't wait to go to Guitar Center and practice this.
This guy is a monster guitar player and great instructor.
Thanks for sharing these techniques! Truly one of my favorite teachers/players, and that you're willing to show the details at that level is super cool!!
Can we all agree.... this guy has a glowing spirit? You'd talk guitar and drink a pint and laugh and cry with him.....
Thanks Joel, great lesson man.
I would so love to see a project with Joel Hoekstra and Chris Broderick.
What's really crazy about this lesson to me is how clean it is. No fretwrap, just precision. Awesome.
Really nice dude, great technique, ace hair, rock n roll
Thanks, dude!
you are a great teacher

Great stuff
Love the lesson! Greetings from Singapore!
Thank you. Priceless. Thank you!
Oh my god the pull offs are kicking my ass
FooFooCuddlypoops I hope you play that easily now after 7 months
3 years later, you got it yet?
"It doesn't all have to sound like an arcade game" ;-)
passive aggressive right? the "arcade" guy can play like a beast too. :)
Great Joel, great!
it is a great place to start in this area
You’re awesome!!
brilliant!!
Is that a brass nut on that LP? looks good with the gold top.
Im a Joel hoekstra fan
I want that hoodie.
I'm wondering if using a LP as opposed to a Strat makes it easier to position the right hand properly for this.
Просто супер suuuperrrrrr vayyyyyyyyyu suuuperrrrrr
Fucking good
Does anybody have the notes/tabs for these lessons? Not around on the website anymore 😭
@3:25
Hey Joel, the intro fade in before the lesson was sweet! Zack Wylde-ish. What song is it from? TAB?
The chromatic tapping sounds like something Buckethead might write...
Ben * He already writes it
Ben * I thought what you probably thought clicking this video 'He ain't got sh*t on buckethead' before you even see him play😂
Exactly bucketheed has teo finger tapping technique i came up with it 6 months ago then saw him doung i was "oh maaaan"😩
never seen a string bend from a fretted finger below the right handed tapper
how muting open string?
True question is can u tell a difference between his tapping and Reb beach's?
I can :-)
David suzuki Reb tends to add a finger from his left hand, so the sound is more scalar. At least, that's how he did it back in the 80s with winger. He's probably added other techniques since then.

sounds like quite a bit of gain do you use delay as well?
These lessons are done with Guitar World's in-house gear. Marshall JVM and the old Boss DD-5 in the loop for a bit of delay.
+joel hoekstra amazing how good you make their rig sound. you are very talented at what you do.
Which kind of distortion pedal he use?
Bestia animal killer
How do you mute the strings your not tapping to limit the unwanted noise?
That would be interesting to learn when using this techique.
For the most part it's just the free fingers, parts of my hands. Anything! Haha! Sometimes in the studio I'll use a fret wrap, etc.
Thanks Bro. Appreciate the response.

Use your left hand thumb.
He used his fretting hand
Anybody else find that their right hand gets in the way and they can't see the fretboard properly when doing this?
Better throw my guitar in the fireplace.
Joel, marry me
Put yes I'll marry you kaitlyn
which pickups do you use?
just the stock burstbuckers
so we must buy a good gibson gold top 57 to have a good sound ! :)
He doesn't have any damper attached to the nut yet he still sound very clean! Amazing precision!
Just what I was thinkin! Mr. Clean
You do not need a damper.
@@Sphereal try doing this with an 8 string. gets muddy real quick lol
@@carlchameleon9847 There's a reason he uses that gold top.

I'm sure he's nice, but I can listen to you for hours...Batio, minutes.
we dont really care if Batio is a master, just watch the vid and thank joel for the free lesson
That tone though. The best tone i ever heard🤘🤘🤘
Yah. Is that amp effects only?
The Spider 2 was surprisingly good.
Props for showing the Rhoads double tap!
Joel seems like a genuinely good person and being a guitar god is just a bonus!!!!!
That tap bend technique was awesome!
out of this world
maybe bcos of the Light gauge strings, dont you think ?
@@zapantalambda I think it's possible with heavier gauge strings. Just have to build the finger strength.

It's a little different than how Vito Bratta would handle tap bends. But, a good perspective.
just amazing teacher
He does it so cleanly without touching the other strings
unsung guitar hero..
That LP gold top is a gorgeous guitar.
girl, ypu use 11s? you must have tendons like tow truck cables.
My favorite guitar teacher, Joel Hoekstra!!! I'd say Joel and Paul Gilbert are 1-2 in guitar teaching in my opinion.
Marty is also one of my all time favourite guitar teacher and player
Guthrie's good too. All excellent teachers.
LP with a brass nut! Nice! Joel for the win.
Great lesson! I've never seen anyone tap with their pinky.
thanx Joel for share your knowledge with us, I'm from Colombia and I learn a lot with you my friend, again thanx dude
goddamn there's an exercise 2?! it will take the rest of my life to nail exercise 1
Great technique! Ya know, you don't have to limit yourself to pentatonic here, have some fun and use this technique with other modes! The technique is awesome, great lesson.
Do you have some tutorial using other modes ?
This dude is such a great teacher! And his perfect smile could easily win the Presidentials hahaha!
Search pick hand legato.
It's what I call my variation of this technique. Still holding pick, tap/roll with last 3 fingers. Just wanted to share.

the concept was already taught by Steve Lynch of Autograph band in his REH video guitar lesson in the 90's. Check it out on youtube.

Great lesson! Can you share the tabs for the exercises with us please? They are not available on the Guitar World article linked to the video.
This lesson is good, I'm sorry I did not watch it 6 years ago
