Excellent review. We have a 2017 and 2023 Highlander. Enough space for our family of four and large dog and tow our trailer. Much more comfortable than Rav4 especially on longer trips. Goldilocks size means it’s easy to park and maneuver in the city.
Do you wish you had more room with the grand highlander? I’m looking to tow a small popup camper. How does it handle fully loaded with the family? Thanks!

@andreaspencer9813 Certainly looked like you were impressed with this particular iteration of the Highlander. Turbo charged engines do tend to boost performance across the full cylinder range so not surprising!
I think they are making a mistake losing the tried-and-true V6 engines. I have a 2015 V6 Highlander with 180000km and I expect this engine the last me another 20 plus years. Smooth powerful reliable. I don't have to worry about any Turbo breaking or problems with direct injection engines. I know why they are doing it but in real-world situations you probably use more fuel than you are with the V6 always accelerating hard. I can tow 5,000 lbs with the V6. Looks like I may have to keep this Highlander going to rest of my life. Great review as usual.
Exactly no way in the long run a 4 cylinder turbo is going to last as long as a V6 engine . Don't be fooled by how well it runs now drive it for 7+ years then compare it to the V6 ....you will see a lot of less wear on the V6
@@etacarinae5558 agreed. I was lucky I bought my Highlander when I did I got the awesome combination of the six-speed auto with the V6. The model after had problems with the 8-speed transmission and some engine problems. I'm happy to drive my Highlander another 20 plus years.
I just checked the mileage this Highlander compared to my 2015 it's about one mile per gallon better. When I'm cruising 130 km per hour on the highway and the RPMs are barely registering I'll stick with my naturally aspirated V6 thank you. No matter how good the engine is it will never last as long as a 6-cylinder engine and will never be as trouble free. If you're crazy enough to get a new car every 4-5 years you won't care. I try to get at least a half a million kilometres on my vehicles. People are going to beat the hell out of these little four cylinders and they are going to wear out in half the time as a 6-cylinder.
The v6 was once new and less reliable than it is today. One thing that is constant is change. Technology is improving. And the most important thing is that the turbo is cleaner while also being more peppy. Let's not forget that Toyota made the reliable Supra many years ago which was a turbo. Toyota does reliability very well.
my wife drives one of these with the 2.4 turbo. In the span of one year we wasted money on a Ford Edge, and a Jeep Grand Cherokee L, both of which had multiple issues, including the batteries going dead overnight. I have never owned a Toyota in my life (and I am old) until this Highlander, and I only bought it because I was so disgusted at the Ford and Jeep. Never even test drove the Highlander until I had signed all the papers and owned it. Turns out we love the Highlander, my wife especially. Can't put my finger on why we like it so much, but we do.
The third row seats were always really meant for small kids as this is a family vehicle. A van can always accommodate adults or taller people back there. Ps kids can get in and out of the third row seats so easily.
I've never understood why people are so offended by the third row in the Highlander, it is meant for use in a pinch by a family of 4 who may occasionally have extra passengers.. Most likely for small children to use.
Bought a 2021 Platinum with the V6, anticipating the move to a 4 cyl. turbo. The gas mileage is about the same according to EPA data, but turbo mpg drops like a rock when the booster kicks in. The V6 has 30 years of history and is quieter. Not thrilled with the second row captain chairs, on the odd occasion with need more seating, the 3rd row is for kids. All the seats are firmer than I like.
I'm surprised that a vehicle in this price range does not have blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert on the base trim, for a brand like Toyota that claims to put safety first
Really nice looking vehicle, particularly the interior. I'm not sure if it was mentioned but it appears that the turn signals are still incandescent? Surprised to see that in 2023 on a vehicle at this price.
Great review. Appreciate the continued criticism of limited seat configurations (on all makes, not just this). US owner,...while we may have more choices than Canada, there still are a couple bugaboos here as well: Toyota (still) needs to pick it up on the Platinum here and offer the second row bench. Wth? Also, the surround view camera really needs to be made available on lower-than- Platinum trims. Ditto, wth?
No SUV this size should have a 4 cylinder engine. Just my opinion. OK with the RAV4 and those kind of medium Size SUV's, but not on a Highlinder top trim.
Interesting thoughts on the 4-cyl engine. I have a ‘23 XLE, and I’m not thrilled with the motor… I feel it’s underpowered, especially when accelerating around a turn from a stop… I wonder if there is too much waiting for the turbos to spool up? I think the wireless charger on the shelf may also be a miss. Toyota should have put it on the next level down, beside the auxiliary outlets. My wife’s smaller phone slides around a lot on the charging pad. Overall, appreciate your review!
I wish more companies would produce this size SUV. We are active grandparents and only need the third seat a few times per year and actually wish Lexus would product a model this size. Some 3 rows are getting HUGE!
Real world driving in the city 350km per tank I got my 2023 platinum gas in January and I've been resetting the odometer everytime I get gas, 350km only facts, which is good for a big SUV

You both look like yoi have so much fun together!!❤❤ What are your thoughts on the "soft teks"? I wasn't impressed driving a Rav4. In fact I didn't think it was comfortable.Happy weekend to you both!!😊😊
The Highlander is more comfortable than the RAV4 but I didn't find the RAV4 uncomfortable myself. I believe comfort level is different for everyone so it is important to spend some time sitting in these. I was in and out of the Highlander and CX-90 PHEV this week and the seats are mort comfortable in the Toyota. Enjoy your weekend!
@@andreaspencer9813 Hoping to hear more info comparing the CX-90 PHEV to the Grand Highlander Hybrid as those two seem to be the top dogs in 3 row SUVs for space, comfort, and MPGs
I had a ‘18 Highlander………..I liked it but it had a very sleepy, boring road feel. I didn’t want to fall asleep at the wheel, so I sold it. I don’t know if it’s changed at all. Great review ! And accent !!! 👍
Toyota's definition of turbo 4 cylinder is a sweet one. They have never left anyone disappointed. That's despite, mostly everyone, will go for hybrid. As Toyota is a hybrid brand.
Very disappointed in this engine. At 3000 miles, it's hesitating, surging, jerking and not getting the designated mpg. Looking at Honda now, never a turbo Toyota again.
Hi 2 weeks back i purchased 2023 highlander front wheel back. It has snow button. I stay in michigan. My friend said we need all wheel drive in michigan. Awd is mandatory for snow or fwd with snow mode is enough plz suggest.
Good morning guys, excuse me for bother you with a silly question, but i will like to have this point of view from someone that already saw the two products. I just about to receive a highlander platinum 2023 but checking the charts, you can get a grand highlander limited almost from the same price you pay for the highlander. My question is, you already tested both option, what do you recommend? Is that big the difference between those two? And for a starting family which one is the better deal? Thank you.
😂 I think Zack wants to the Scottish. 😂 Good vehicle with awesome features. I think CX-90 is more beautiful than Highlander. Pilot is a good looking. I think Highlander is good for a family of 4 or more. Great video with lots of sense of humours. 👍🏻👍🏻☕️☕️
I don't trust the Turbo engine. If you get it and want to keep for the long term. Just make sure you do your oil changes ever 3000 miles and use Premium gas. No it does not say that in the owner manual.
I have Highlander 2021, bumper came off in 2022 that time I went to dealer and they refused to repair. I did repairs from insurance company i.e. ICBC. Now I got the recall for the same and I request Toyota to refund the money I paid for the repair or still paying as my insurance went up really high. Insurance company does not agree to put me off from the penalty. Bumpers falling...
My wife and I are in the market for a smaller three row SUV. We have our name down at a hybrid Highlander XLE, but have been told that the wait time could be up to 18 months. We'll likely end up going with either the hybrid Sorrento or CX-90 PHEV just cause the wait is much shorter.
Great review love the Highlander but there is a big issue with them being stolen. I know multiple people who have had RAV4 and Highlanders stolen off their driveways in less than a minute. When is Toyota going to address this? As a result insurance price for this car is really not appealing. Also why are you not displaying the Subaru ascent as one of your runners up? Thank you 🙂
When CX-9 yrs ago went down from a V6 to a 2.5T they were crucified! So they went to an in-line 6 with CX-90 in response…Toyota goes from a V6 to a 2.4T and they’re praised for it! So much bias against Mazda and so many followers (sheeple) for Toyota! 🤦♂️
Motormouth have you noticed if those front doors design on the Highlander goes way under the floor like the new generation Lexus RX does ? Your in Canada and people complaint a lot about this with the new RX. Snow and debris get inside at the bottom of the interior doors. When we open the doors on the RX in winter time it's so ugly and dirty. We have 3 to 4 inches of debris inside the doors sand, snow, ice, calcium etc. My wife and I we hated that on our RX 350 2023.
I’m curious as to why we’re lumping the standard Highlander in with the Korean twins, Telluride and Palisade. Would the Sorento not be a more accurate comparison vehicle? I know you did mention the Sorento at one point; but, then on the 4 Cars to Consider segment, you used the Telluride.
with the 2.4L lol no way it get 40mpg. Hybrid is the way to go. Why someone would choose this engine instead of a hybrid is beyond me. I mean, its not a sports car. It's a big SUV. You want gas mileage.
2022 is still better and cheaper. Picked up one to replace our aging highlander hybrid. Wanted to get a RX hybrid but there was none available in our trim and color. Really shame that the V6 got dropped for those who don't really care about fuel economy and eco standards that Cali is setting.
Hi guys! I Wanted to get your take on the 2.4l turbo 4 for the grand highlander application? I watched the Highlander review this week and know you like it in the smaller one. We just got an offer to take a gas GH limited and bypass the 6 month wait for a hybrid max and wanted to get your thoughts. Thanks!
Question why wouldn’t the limited or platinum automatically come with the jbl? In searching for my car I’ve seen some are missing this. Only has 6 speakers. Shouldn’t jbl be standard on those trims
Come on, guys! In terms of aesthetics, please don’t compare the Highlander to the CX-90. Everyone’s been outclassed by the Mazda, except perhaps the Telluride with its very attractive boxy shape. Even in your “consideration” segment, the difference in design is evident.
We know all agree Toyota quality and reliability is great, but still a "turbo" 4 cylinder engine VS. up to 4,453 lbs. hints that engine wear in terms of long-term durability is still questionable. Only time will tell if it's as durable as past models.
Of course Toyota would continue making the Highlander. They would be foolish to discontinue a huge seller. I would imagine the next generation model to retain 7 passenger seating but it would be more targeted at the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento now that Toyota has the Grand Highlander to compete with the Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade etc. With the Lexus TX being barely different from the Grand Highlander, it would be better if the 3.5l PHEV powertrain remains a Lexus exclusive.
Would you be able to try the acceleration with a fully-loaded vehicle? My experience is that the performance of vehicles with smaller engines suffer when fully-loaded.
The key is high torque (rotation force, in case you don't know) starting at low engine rotational speed (rpm). This engine has exactly that (for a gasoline engine type).
@@michaels3003 I have 3 trucks that I compared. One is a Mitsubishi Strada GT with a 4N15 diesel engine. Rated torque is 430 Nm @2,500 rpm. The other is a 2014 Toyota Hilux with a 1KD FTV 3.0 diesel engine with a torque rating of 300 Nm at 2,400 rpm. The third is a Toyota Hilux with a 2.8 liter 1GD FTV engine rated at 500 Nm of torque at 2,800 rpm. When empty, the fastest of the three is the Mitsubishi Strada. Followed with the Toyota Hilux with the 2.8 liter engine. The 3.0 Hilux is the slowest of the three. When loaded with the same cargo, the most powerful is the Hilux with the 1 GD FTV engine, followed by the Hilux with the 1 KD FTV engine. The one that struggles when loaded is the Mitsubishi Strada.

I don't trust the Turbo engine. If you get it and want to keep for the long term. Just make sure you do your oil changes ever 3000 miles and use Premium gas. No it does not say that in the owner manual.
Mr. Scott would appreciate this version of the HIghlander.
Great Scottish accent Zack! 🏴 I’m sure your ancestors are proud.😂
Andrea, we’ll kindly need an Italian 🇮🇹 accent from you in the future.🤣😂
Lexus/Toyota has been using turbo 4 in the Lexus nx for almost a decade
No Zack no one noticed what you were wearing 🤦🤦🤦. This is a car review channel... We're all dudes 🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦 lol
Which would you choose between this turbo four or the hybrid?
Personally the lower hybrid. I just like the smoothness and gas milage too much.
When Zach was doing the Scottish accent, at least he didn't call Andrea heed(head).😊
Will you cover the "Nightshade" editions?
Great review love the Highlander but there is a big issue with them being stolen. I know multiple people who have had RAV4 and Highlanders stolen off their driveways in less than a minute. When is Toyota going to address this? As a result insurance price for this car is really not appealing. Also why are you not displaying the Subaru ascent as one of your runners up? Thank you 🙂
I’m confused, why don’t people park in their garage?
The vehicle is protected from weather and you know it’s going be there in the morning.🤷♂️
Not everyone that owns a car has a garage.
Any reason the Nissan PathFinder wasn’t among the 4 to consider? I would personally consider it before the Explorer.
Quot selling the turbocharged engine. It will never last as long or be as trouble free as the 6.
Could be that the volume control is on the right side because the radio that came with it may have been for the right hand drive model.
The XLE AWD trim for $43k isn't bad at all, but who knows what real world pricing will be, thanks to stealerships.
You can find HLs for less than MSRP at some dealers. It’s not 2021 anymore.
Does it get good gas milage? 40 mpg? Do you get your check yet?
with the 2.4L lol no way it get 40mpg.
Thanks!
They already gave their thoughts. Check out their GH initial review
Will you be trying the Chevy blazer?
I have a 2016 with 3.5. Recently had to rent one while on a business trip that had the 4 cylinder. Yuk. I think I'll keep mine a bit longer.
When will Toyota Highlander launch its new 2024 model in Canada 🇨🇦
The new engine sucks, its very weak. Bring back the V6, it is a great engine.
when will you guys get the grand highlander or the lexus TX(especially 550H+)
Not for sale until the end of the year, so closer to then. There is a video on the Grand Highlander already.
@@Motormouth... i ordered a 550h+ but only output information is available on that, looking forward to see a detailed review on that one.
I wonder why you guys almost never review the exterior of the vehicle while doing the walk-around.
Question why wouldn’t the limited or platinum automatically come with the jbl? In searching for my car I’ve seen some are missing this. Only has 6 speakers. Shouldn’t jbl be standard on those trims
The Limited model does come standard with the 11-speaker JBL sound system in both Canada and the US.
I love the highlander. I have had a hybrid platinum on order for 17 months now. I can't wait to get it.
For Your Consideration - I wouldn’t be able own a Mazda if I lived in Canada just because of the way you guys pronounce Mazda up there. 😂
You have mentioned the demise of the CHR a couple of times recently. I believe the mark 2 is to be announced in the coming week.
Sucks I can only get black headliner on the platinum trim
What about Hybrid one
And as comparison with Honda pilot
No way a vehicle this big should have a four cylinder engine. These engines will burn out before 100k. My FJ and Avalon will still be running.
