Girl any immigrant ever feels your pain. This isn't even that bad, in America you have Human Services, Social Security, and Social Services. And ANY time you need something from each place, they will send you to the other location. I literally once went to these three departments 8 times because they kept saying, "Oh this isn't our job...go to (so and so)"

welcome to Europe!! bureaucracy is a NIGHTMARE here idk about northern europe but the mediterranean countries don't know efficiency or completing simple process online... 😩🙄
It's a double-edged sword, I feel like. I'm German, and we all *love* to pride ourselves on our supposed efficency and time management skills, but bureaucracy can be such a disaster here as well 😩😩 Sometimes, acquiring or getting back important official forms can take quite a while. Even for residents (mostly regarding insurrance etc.)
The north, as in Scandinavia is generally not like this. You might have to wait for stuff but you are usually sent to the right place(s) at once and they often give out some form of temporary licences and/or numbers to you while you wait to get properly approved or worked into the system(s) so you should never end up with an "illegal" status because of bureaucracy screw ups.
yep, when she said Italian bureaucracy is shit, I was like no it's like this in the whole mediterranean and south europe. we are so behind on online forms and most people who work in the government have no idea what to do. literally, filling out forms for student grants takes so effing long and you have to visit ten different places, what a nightmare!

The best advice I can give, as an Italian, on how to overcome our bureaucracy: be worse than them. Show up repeatedly without appointments, don't feel ashamed to insist on everything (even if you feel like you're being rude), never trust what they say in person (online official sources tend to be slightly more truthful) and in general expect to be pissed off for the whole process.
Paperwork is my nemesis.... listening to this was so stressful. Glad its done!!
I'm really loving this Italy content. My dream (and im sure a lot of people watching this) rn is to just leave my home and start over. I'm in my 2nd year of college and I'm already so over it. I'm also really tired of living in California and the U.S. in general. I'm living vicariously through you and it's honestly a form of therapy.

Yeees! Come to Europe, I am from Germany and lived in Italy the last months and honestly I am always stunned at the prices for college in the US. In Germany university is completely free and Italy is like 3000 euro per year as well!

honestly i feel like this type of bureaucracy is really shitty everywhere (technically what youre doing I would say counts as temporary immigration). other EU countries are terrible at it too, especially if it comes to non-EU citizens, it's just such a mess. I live in the EU and i used to work for a company where all we did was we helped foreign citizens navigate this horrible system, because the actual authorities are no help at all. Im glad your situation is finally resolved!
This is what doing literally anything in The States is like. Any time anything gets resolved quickly and easily I almost cry because I’m expecting a fight 😂🙃😭

When I had my first ID card done it was delivered by post. At the post office they told me to show them my ID so they can give me my letter. I was like, 'I don't have one, it is in your hand'. The answer to that was, 'We can't help you, no ID means no letter.' My mom had to collect it for me later. It was surreal.
lmao something similar happened to me too: got a letter about taxes and you can't take it without an ID, but my dad was like I know the postman he'll give it to you no problem (it's a small town, everyone knows everyone9. of course, when we tried to collect it, some nasty old hag worked there and wouldn't give it to me, dad just cursed them out and the letter is probably still there lol the post office is the literal definition of hell

italian paperwork is so bad and a lot people working in these places have no desire to actually help you out in any way or make things easy for you. my grandfather needed a document to go from permesso di soggiorno to actual citizenship (like 20 years ago, but it's not like it was much different from how it is now) and had to schedule five appointments back and forth bc this one place kept saying they didn't have it and others told him they definitely did. they said he'd have to fly back to his country and get it there because they were SURE they didn't have it or wait until they could go through every document again. he ended up managing to convince the dude working there to make him look for it and found it within an hour...
also the fact that a lot of places accept you without checking whether you actually have an appointment or not is the reason a lot of people show up in lines/places they shouldn't be in/they should have an appointment for and try it anyway and it's??? so absurd????
@@calinda4003 yep, southern europe does this perfectly - if you schedule an appointment you'll wait like a month and no one will care, but if you just show up, they'll do it in like 15 minutes lmao

Hahah so I’m from the UK and I’m currently living in Malta (just off of Italy) and I couldn’t stop laughing throughout this video because I’ve experienced such a similar thing! The only difference being with Brexit going on, the government here genuinely doesn’t know what to do with us Brits. Also I’ve found in the Mediterranean if you’re told you need an appointment - you pretty much don’t, just turn up and no one will question it 😂 so true that no one wants to do anything online or over the phone here though, everything is very old fashioned and face-to-face

As an Italian - you’re absolutely right, our bureaucracy sucks. whenever you have to fill out some form or find out what to do and where to go for something it’s a huge hassle😂
Glad things worked themselves out in the end. I enjoy watching videos of your everyday life experiences. I moved to France a few years back and now to Sweden and I had similar experiences with bureaucracy in both countries. I think it is combination of incompetence and malevolence.
Yeah - being an immigrant in any country usually isn't easy. It is not my experience that there is any willingness to make the process easy on the one going through it. At least you are not one with the "wrong" ethnic background. in an Italian context..

Similar thing with me. Moved from Australia to Croatia, it's extremely difficult and confusing to do any paper work. In Australia they basically treat you like a 5 year old, anyone can get it done. In the Mediterranean you need to be a lawyer to understand anything.
Croatian here - my dad has to call an accountant to understand how student scholarships work (which are not supposed to be even complicated) and sometimes even a professional accountant has trouble understanding them. what a mess, every time I see the demands for the paperwork, I have to stop and think is this free money worth it??

My god, I am literally going through the same thing here in Italy. For me, it was even worse since on top of that process I had to fuck with university and scholarship bureaucracy. Nobody knows what there doing and they are constantly transferring responsibility to someone else. It's a never-ending agony. You should stop emotionally investing in it, just try to resolve everything technically. Stay strong :D

I am so glad I didnt have to do this for my semester in Ital since I am an European citizen, but I had to go and get a tax number so I could rent an apartment and I am so glad my landlords went with me because otherwise it would have been a nightmare :D

Oh well good luck with it all hahha. Book an appointment at the questura, bring photocopies of everything. and make sure you pay the Marca da bollo & the permit fee (at the post office) BEFORE you turn up at your appointment so it can lodged on the day - otherwise you'll have to rebook

Omg. Omg I relate so hard. Just today I have been to the Questura, the Ufficio Immigrazione, the Anagrafe - I CANNOT. Not one single person apparently knows anything about the permesso di soggiorno. This was me applying for my study abroad where I couldn't complete a certain section because no one knew anything about the visa options that would be available to me, then when I FINALLY got the info it opened up another box of info I needed to fill out, which opened up ANOTHER box etc. etc.
And it was all "for nothing" since the exchange ended up being cancelled due to Covid. But at least I kinda know how it works now. Can't wait to do it all over again in not long so I maybe can go in 2022 instead. *displeased noises*
This kind of bullshit is everywhere, with government, when you are applying for a new job etc. There are always surprise “extra documents” at the end, or the last process to your “quick online job application” is actually a small essay.
But you would never go through that much bullshit when you are trying to buy something on Amazon. It takes 1 seconds to click on “buy now” and they don’t even ask for confirmation, your money is already taken, no refund or regret allowed.

Imagine living in Italy for 12 years and having to renew it every. f-ing. year. Also, for 2, TWO, consecutive years I risked not being able to take my exams at university because it took them 10, TEN months to give me the freaking plastic thingy.

This is not an Italy problem, this is a Europe problem, bureaucracy, bureaucracy, bureaucracy... I'm moving back to Germany after 3 years in Saudi and the amount of paperwork they want, and explanations not to mention I have to pay taxes ON MY OWN BELONGINGS I'm bringing back with me - which by the way I had to write up detailed lists and costs for...etc etc. Anyone reading this, this is an aspect of Socialism people like to ignore. Oh and what Lily said is true, people won't lift a finger to help you, even for something as small as a stamp, the answer is always "that's not my department". Can't wait to leave Germany again.

Hi Lily Thank you so much for explaining what you went through because soon in February or March 2021. I will need to do the same thing, go to the Questura in 8 days and apply for a Permesso di Soggiorno. Can I ask then, do you have to go to the post office first to collect the forms or do you go straight to the Questura and get the forms there? Also they would have to wait until we do the 14 days quarantine first before they can count the 8 days for me to go to the Questura. Anyway, yes unfortunately bureaucracy is like that there when they talk to you it seems like they want you to hurry up, hand in the documents and go and sometimes they go so fast you don't quite catch everything they say. I'm really happy you got the permit in the end. I would love to hear how you are going there with the lockdowns happening at the moment and soon for xmas. I hope things ease there soon so I can start putting in my application for an exemption here in Melbourne. Take care and have a happy Christmas.

Hi Lily I forget to ask you how did you go with travel and health insurance for Italy for 12 months cover? Did you get travel insurance for the flights to cover your trip and then in Italy buy one year health insurance? Did you have to show anything at the airport in Australia when you departed at the airport? When you arrived in Italy did you have to show a certificate of insurance? Would appreciate some advise on this or who you bought the cover from? Thank you in advance.

Hey, great video. Quick one - the both guides you posted says, only fill 1st module if it's your first Permesso di Soggiorno. Is it true even if I'm employed in Italy by the UN? Seems no one knows anything, I tried the questura, lawyers all seem useless. They just can't tell you simple and straight answer. If you know any good lawyer, then can you share his/her details? I got a visa type D (mission) which is valid until next year but I'm planning to resign from my job next month. So, figuring out a way to extend my stay here. Any tip/advice would be appreciated! Thanks much

So, if you enter with a working holiday visa, you need to apply for the permesso di soggiorno within 8 working days of your arrival? Did I get it right?
this bureaucracy stuff is a nightmare everywhere, I cannot imagine how it must be during covid. I have lived in three countries, spent a semester abroad and every now and then there have been utter nightmare moments where you just think "country/city xyz, get your sh*t together so that I can get my sh*t together, ok?" in my experience, it has only worked out smoothly in Austria (love love love). there is nothing you can do, when the countries are not organised, at least the deadlines are also not taken dead seriously if you cannot stick to them - at least in my experience.
If you ask the permesso di soggiorno for the first time you have to go to Questura principale witch is the immigrazione centr . You will present all your documents all the photo copies.
But watch out when you renewal the permesso di soggiorno you will have to go to police station near of your residence.
Note: take the appointment form post office attached all the documents before two months of your psd getting expire .

Well I have to say things are improving but as a general suggestion on how approach the public offices :
1) Wear Your best smile... ever! If you are dying inside ... just smile.. be empathic
2) Think to approach an Artificial Intelligence. The AI will give You infos in raw format ... but You always need to drive the things.
3) Be smart and creative , with Italian burocrazia nothing is completely written on a stone... You can always find huge space for workarounds.
4) Most of the time there are Online fast ways to do the things that people and the physical offices often ignores or disencourages .
5) And yes .. very often is useful to ask before to someone else that passed through a given iter before You.
