It’s weird to make videos about yourself, but is it really? Or am I just old?

  • Don’t you find it weird to talk into a phone like you’re actually talking to someone? It’s kind of weird, but I am also weird so it makes sense to do it. What do you think?

I’ve followed your videos for quite some time, now. I’ve found them to be exceptionally helpful in my long and winding painting journey. At the good age of 71, I’ve never stopped learning and growing as a painter, and you’ve been a wonderful part of that, Mr “ Weirdo”! Thanks for all your efforts to help fellow painters, no matter where we are on this crazy Path. You are appreciated.

Us weirdo boomers who have genx children DO NOT think you're weird for doing what you do! We appreciate and respect your talents and willingness to put yourself "out there" in the confident yet humble way that you do. I have a son a couple months younger than you and is far less weird than his parents more talented and successful than either so continue to do what you do and enjoy it fearlessly. In my not so humble opinion your lessons are far superior to the myriads that are available and we appreciate you so chin up and keep doing what your heart desires you Maine-iac!

    Yeeee weirdos unite! Lol.
It may feel a little unnatural at first, I think absolutely yes, that’s normal. I’m 26(in the last year or the Milennials) and I still feel kinda weird taking selfies in public. I feel like most people who make content for a living felt strange recording themselves/vlogging in public at first too, perhaps because they felt like they were getting weird looks/judgement from others, but when you think about it, it’s just another form of creation and you gotta do what you gotta do to get the product you want and match your vision as accurately as possible(even if that means talking to a camera in the middle of Target).
If it’s a matter of being slightly “camera shy”, it’ll get easier and feel more natural the more you do it.
If it’s anticipation about looking weird to other people, we have to cut others’ opinions out of the equation because it’s not about them or what they think, it’s about you and what you’re creating and your dedication to do what needs to be done to fulfill that creation (and then market it in a way that honors it if that’s what you plan to do). As someone who sells his creations for a living, developing your presence online is a great idea. People will connect with you more and that is just good marketing. It’s wise to adapt to the times, as the internet is not going away.
People buy things online most of the time these days, and they buy from people that they develop some kind of interest in.
Even if you aren’t doing it as a marketing tactic you may actually find that it’s cathartic/therapeutic on a personal level, and that is beneficial for any aspect of life.
You have a pleasant nature (it also helps that you are good looking *wink wink*) and there are many people who will watch someone/support them just because they enjoy a person’s personality.
You’re doing great already by opening up, inquiring/asking opinions and starting a conversation with your subscribers. I feel very engaged.
This is your audience, you cultivate it however you please.
You will encourage its growth in a direction that is favorable to you by tapering the content you create to your own personal style, way of thinking etc.
You create that content and the people who enjoy consuming that kind of content will come, and before you know it you’ll have a crowd of like-minded people hanging around your platform, staying engaged with your content, looking forward to keeping up with you, supporting you and seeing what you have to create on an even deeper and more personal level.
I could be grossly over-analyzing the situation, but either way, if you made it this far, thanks for reading my excerpt(lol). Godspeed and congrats on the expansion of your work/platform! Its amazing to hear you are finally getting into comics and pursuing/fulfilling that creative goal. ❤ That’s the nectar of life my dude I can taste it on my own lips just hearing you going for it. Haaaw yeah!! 🍐🦅

Hi Tim, Thank you for e-mailing the link. I do not have facebook/instagram etc so it was nice to see a video of you on you tube, thank you for that! This is a good way for you to reach out to those not on social media.

😂 #genx #imissblogger but yes I think all the “kids” walking around filming themselves nonstop is strange 😅 (I miss the time before social media) tbh I hate my voice and seeing myself on screen BUT I do like learning about others! 😆 We’re all artsy weirdos and proud of it, glad you’re still sharing your talent after all these years. I put my brushes away after having my daughter last year lol, I flipped my art room into a nursery and need to make space so I can paint again 🤣

It is always good to know people and the context of their lives to understand their work. I don't know what category I fall into (born in 1959), but I enjoy the personal parts of social media. I just recently started a class at the junior college in art history. I am the oldest in the class, including the professor, but find myself learning a lot about the young students as well as the curriculum. So keep it up,
Tim! Thanks for what you do.

Gen X here. It's weird to me as well, but not watching. I enjoy your work, and am really interested to hear/see about you.
Can we talk about how that shirt matches the trees in the background? Yeah, that's the kind of thing I think while watching videos.

Boomer here… I too enjoy knowing about people’s thoughts and lives. I also think that there are many who have a fluffy self centered approach in what they make public, and those I find pretty vapid. Protect your privacy but I welcome your comments. Your tutorials have taught me so much.

And i think, this "self-video" is a right step to connect more with your followers and to let to grow your channel 🙂

Boomer here, and definately think it's great to connect with viewers this way, so we can get to know you. I like that it's unscripted too. I've bought your lessons and followed you for years, will check out your IG too (I just started IG this year myself) - So yes, definitely. This video caught my interest immediately too.

Xennial here. I think it's an amazing opportunity to hear about you as an artist. With social media, you might feel weird on your end, but it's so nice for me as your audience/fan to hear you talk. Thanks for being cool enough to share your knowledge and experiences publicly.
One-way communication is weird. Just know you're appreciated - thanks for all of the lessons. I used to paint (tonal landscapes and illustrated narratives in oil), then stopped 10 years ago, now I want to start again. I came across your videos because I wanted to try working with acrylic paints and I know nothing about working with acrylic. I only know how to use oils.
You're videos are a refreshing reminder that I can get back into painting again and I can learn new techniques. I can do this. You're an inspiration.

Hey Tim! Boomer here! I am totally uncomfortable with putting myself in front of the camera, but I so enjoyed seeing/listening to you especially after meeting you in person during the class in Rochester. I LOVE learning about people! That’s why I run an Airbnb. Humans are fascinating! I look forward to more videos about Tim, the interesting human!

I just got home from your workshop. Wish I saw it before it, we could have talked more about it. All I know is THANK GOD there was no social media when I was a teen and twenty something. I probably would never be hired anywhere after the saw my videos. Plus, all my stuff would have given my mom a heart attach. Lol
Thanks Tim for the great workshop and your help. Had a great time.

🎨Awww Tim, Sir, you're more adorable than ever. I remember watching some of your older videos about your love of Maine nature and its inspiration for your art.
I am older retired and would love to see your more "everyday life" side -- and how it relates or doesn't to your art, etc.
The reason you feel weird doing this I believe is twofold. One, anything kind of new could require a bit of a learning curve - perfectly understandable.
And two, you're gentle and humble -- not boisterous and arrogant. So focusing on yourself will naturally feel strange at first.
But trust me, you're engaging personality, relaxed style, new haircut (?), and non threatening behaviour I think would interest viewers as they learn more about you. God gave us the ability and desire to connect with each other, so bring on the videos!! 😁
My only lament, is that your videos are never long enough😢. I realize they are often teasers for your online teaching. However some of us cannot afford even small amounts right now, even though we'd like to be able to contribute.
You're a marvelous talented skilled artist. I love your Acrylic videos and would love to see some longer you tube art videos from you -- as well as the personal interest videos too!!
Maybe some slightly smaller (but not too small) simple landscapes and seascapes that would be a breeze for you -- but that would give us beginners a lot of nuggets we could apply in our painting journey. Cheers from Wisconsin and thank you for sharing your time and tips with us !!!

Hi Tim, without sounding too "stalky", I've watched you for quite a while and what I thought was really enjoyable about your videos was, well your paintings,, I've watched you paint whenever I was going through a dry spell, it helped get my creative juices going but I'm a weirdo artist too so I'm probably not speaking for the " new generation", so my opinion is .....drum roll, your pleasant face peaking once in a while is good but if you open too much about your life and not just art it'll invade your personal space, I've always been aware of your reserved nature and that was appreciated, thank you Tim

I've been watching you paint for years now Tim. I don't think that it's weird at all. I'm 53 and I wish that I new how to do it! LoL I've wondered what makes you tick as it reflects your painting style. Of course make some videos about you.

Hey Tim! Fellow artist and gen X’r. Thanks for attempting to connect with your audience. Relatability matters. If it matters to you, it matters to us. It is only weird if we make it weird. When you are uncomfortable, it makes your audience uncomfortable. Becoming comfortable doing new things can be weird but it doesn’t have to be. If you view it as something you have to do vs what you want to do, that will also come through to your audience. I think sharing the human experience is art in itself at its very core. Keep being you and being willing to share yourself and your talents with the world. The life behind the artist is one of my most favorite concepts. Mastering your own human experience through the lens of a camera is what makes you most relatable. We are not looking for polished perfection. Flaws in art and nature is exactly what makes it beautiful. No one likes staring at a forest of perfect trees. The eye will always be drawn to the one growing all wonky and that tree has a story! Love your art and enjoyed hearing from you, too! Keep being awesome! ❤

I’m a boomer, I have three Gen X kids. The world and technology changed soo much between these generations, and I now see Gen X trying to catch up with the following generations. I know how that players out, at times it’s not easy. All I can say is do what you are comfortable with, stretch yourself if you can, if not it could be as simple as it’s not for you. I value your help no matter what you do. Thankyou.

I guess is kinda a little of both in your case...anyways do whatever u want and feel, with time may become more natural to record yourself that way, im 22 and feel weird even while taking selfies with a friend haha...
Also yeah this could benefit the channel and other media u have, after all, the format of being more idk, like open or close, to the public is always something people like and so. 👍✌️

I love learning about people but like you find it strange to put oneself in front of the camera Well done you for doing it. I think it is pretty normal nowadays, but I doubt i could do it. I'm so private and an introvert that i would find it difficult. Paint everyday and love living on a small island that my husband and I moved to just over three years ago. 2K population but great restaurants and lots to do if you are so inclined. Husband a Leo and totally opposite , historical fiction writer and does PR for the island. Would look forward to seeing more video's Brave man :-)

It is weird sometimes getting used to the way things are done now. I'm an old baby boomer still getting used to being old. haha Making little videos chatting with your customer base is a nice homey idea. In this high-tech era it adds a nice personal touch. You are a teacher of many and I'm sure most of your online students would like to see and hear what you are up to, then you are not just a voice with a hand leading a paintbrush around a canvas. Thumbs up!

Another Gen X here. Congrats on not being a narcissist. I think if you feel comfortable talking to a camera and taking pictures of your self everywhere right off the bat, narcissism must be involved. What's important is that we can all connect to different people from different places to learn and share our knowledge through talking on a small machine. It gets you anywhere in the world with a good purpose. Let's embrace it! One minute of listening to one of your videos and I instantly learned so much!

I would love to know about you and your personal life and how your paintings are created! It’s something that is very interesting to me and I’m sure everyone who enjoys art from the beginning of time has wanted to know how the artist come up with their paintings or songs or whatever!
