A livestreamed panel discussion with members of the team that developed a new proposal for The United Methodist Church’s future occurred on Monday, Jan. 13.
The panel interview, conducted by UM News, was streamed on www.UMNews.org beginning at 9:30 a.m. Eastern U.S. Time. It can be viewed at • UM News to interview p... . The panel discussion lasted approximately one hour and will be recorded and archived on the site.
The panelists described how they developed the Protocol of Reconciliation & Grace Through Separation, a proposal that they are working to have drafted as legislation and sent to General Conference. The proposal, announced Jan. 3, would provide a means for traditionalists to leave The United Methodist Church and form their own denomination, as well as a way for others to leave the denomination within a specified time. Proponents emphasize that no one is being asked to leave the church.
The proposal is the latest effort to move the church past a decades-long debate over inclusiveness and interpretation of Scripture with regard to same-gender weddings and the ordination of LGBTQ clergy. The United Methodist Church’s official positions are that all people are of sacred worth; the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching; “self-avowed practicing homosexuals” shall not be ordained as clergy; and same-sex weddings shall not be performed in the denomination’s churches nor by its clergy.
When The United Methodist Church’s General Conference meets May 5-15 in Minneapolis, delegates from around the world will consider a number of proposals for splitting or restructuring the church.
The protocol document was developed by people from centrist, progressive and traditionalist perspectives, as well as bishops from the United States, Africa, Europe and the Philippines. The group was led by mediator Kenneth Feinberg, who worked on the federal September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, the Agent Orange Victim Compensation Fund, and programs to compensate victims of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill and the Boston Marathon bombing.
    Panelists will include:
Bishop John Yambasu, co-convener, mediation team
Janet Lawrence, executive director, Reconciling Ministries Network
Bishop Cynthia Fierro Harvey, president-elect, Council of Bishops
    Kenneth Feinberg, mediator
The Rev. Junius Dotson, co-convener, UMC Next
The Rev. Keith Boyette, president, Wesleyan Covenant Association
Bishop Thomas Bickerton, co-convener, mediation team
The moderator will be Tim Tanton with UM News.
The livestream originated from Tampa, Florida, where the mediation team met that day.

I remember when the United Methodist Church was formed through the merger back in the 60's I specifically remember my father and his brother saying they feared that one day people we did not even know would be telling us how to run our local church.

The Protocol is a loving peaceful God inspired solution to a very difficult problem. The world as well as the church will benefit from it.

Please don't call the condoning and ordination of gay marriage God inspired. You will not find any example of such in the Bible.

@@martyapo And if we worshipped the Bible, if it was God, Father & Bible I would agree. But we don't. We worship a Living God who is at work in the hearts of gay people, who He created to be gay, all over the world. The Bible says a lot crazy things that we don't adhere to, so to pull out this one thing and shake your finger saying "this part is law and you will do this" is a sinful use scripture. Rather, we tend to stick to the Ten Commandments, first person texts of God's voice, Jesus' words and the New Testament. But then suddenly gay people come along and want to be treated equally in the church, you're gonna pull out some obscure scripture from Leviticus?? No sorry, that a whoring of the Bible to match your own prejudice. The Bible was never meant to be a Law Book and was certainly never meant to exclude millions of people on this Earth. Christ hated the church's laws about things. He loved people, all people who loved Him.

@@Skipbo000 then please give me an example of Jesus or God condoning gay marriage. If there was one example of biblical marriage between gay individuals then perhaps you have a case.

@@martyapo How do you know Jesus wasn't gay? You really don't and yet if you really think about it - there are indeed some clues. There aren't any Asian or Hispanic people in the Bible either. Why are they welcome? Do you only accept or believe in people or things whom Jesus or God specifially condoned? And for the people and things they didn't, then those people must not belong? Plus you're arguing about something about a person of which they cannot help - that's what's so ludicrous and cruel about this debate. God never said anything about condoning people born with one arm, are we supposed to turn them away too? You are unwilling to accept gay people because you don't like them. Stop twisting and whoring the Bible as a weapon for your own bigotry and hate. Haven't we already learned that lesson? Do you know how your life would be affected if gays began getting married in your church and became a part of the Family of God, dedicating themselves in holy union, seeking Christian fellowship with God's people? Not one iota. It sure would help their lives, however. Why so unwilling to let others into your club?

I feel that a "splinter", "split", or "schism" will undoubtedly force members on both sides of the issues, to fear ridicule from others, for making their own statement of belief through their decision to stay or leave. Fear from proclaiming your spiritual belief is a horrible thing to have to have fear of!

I don't appreciate the dodging of questions and joking around at serious issues. This process has been extremely difficult, disheartening and harmful to many of us members and while I appreciate the hard work they have put in to this process, I find some of their behavior disrespectful and disingenuous. Some of the most important questions were answered in true politician style, that is to say NOT answered in any meaningful way.

I know how intensely Jesus prayed for the unity of his friends. One part of this prayer was unity among his disciples (John 17)
Also I recall how Paul in Corinthians fought with energetic words for the unity between all fellow Christians, as he was in aware of the splits within Corinth. The church at Corinth was in disarray, polarized into factions, many corruptions and deviations of biblical rituals and beliefs. Adultery and promiscuity was being tolerated.
"Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment." (1 Cor.1)
We as brothers and sisters in Christ, we have to endure each other, even if we are sure that the other brother is wrong in some important detail. It is not our infallible knowledge and action that justifies us before God, but His grace alone.
