Randy's background vocals on One Of These Nights, is unbelievable.
AGREE!
Whenever I want to hear one of Eagles best songs I listen to "Try and Love Again." Randy Meisner's voice....perfection. R.I.P.
'Take it to the Limit' was one of my favorite Eagles songs. I would get goosebumps hearing those high notes at the end. RIP Randy Meisner🙏🏾.
Ditto
RIP Randy. A true musician. Listen everyday to all the music, where he was a part of. Deeply respect for his family.
Take it to the limit will always be my favorite, his notes touched you deep in your soul ❤
Thanks for your tribute to the great and lovely soul and amazing talent Randy Meisner💕 he was so talented and so unassuming amazing voice and bassist. RIP Randy will be so missed 😢❤️❤️❤️🙏🇮🇪
Randy was my favorite singer in the Eagles and loved his contribution to Poco. Also, some good solo stuff. I saw the Eagles 3 times in the 70's ( one ticket price was $7.50 and they opened for the Stones). Poco was the best band I never saw live. RIP Mr. Meisner and thank you for the joy you left in this world.
John....you always do an amazing job...but your continuing tributes to Randy Meisner are among the best I have seen. I love how personal you made them. RIP Randy.
One of the greatest American musicians of all time. Thank you for all the great music you made during your time on this earth. Nobody will ever come close to singing Take It To The Limit as good as you. We will miss you. RIP and God bless you Randy!!
thanks Randy I'm so sorry about the pain you went through
Randy will forever be a music icon. I wish he'd have known how great he was. RIP Randy 😢
Grew up with the Eagles and only recently learned Randy Meisner's name, Amazing voice, pitch perfect, great vibrato and sustsain. Greetings from Bangalore, India. Great tribute.
The thing that bothered me about the Hell Freezes Over tour was that Randy and Bernie weren't part of the show. It was a great show, but it would have been just that much better if they were there.
They were FORMER members, both left of their own accord. Why should they have been part of HFO ? It wasn't a class reunion. It was a celebration of the band as it existed before the "14 year vacation".
Uhm... not exactly.
Henley or Frey would be quick to tell you they've never celebrated a whole lot about the band by the time their 14-year vacation started.
AT the time the 14YVS
not BYthetime
My mistake/sueMe!
Sorry.. just 1 last comment.
Don would probably be quicker to tell you than Glen.
It’s more enjoyable to split $$$ five ways than seven.
Seriously, I doubt it would have worked. If I had my guess, Glenn was probably thinking, “do we really even need Felder”, at the time.
My guess is Felder was always on shaky ground for that reunion.
Try and love again. Beautiful song. Rest in peace randy.
Randy's solo album "One More Song " was great. And his 3rd self titled I loved it too. These albums really showed Randy's vocals and and how versatile Randy's voice and music really was..
Just a really fine overview of Randy Meisner's career, John. He mentions at 46:12 the toll that being a touring musician takes on a marriage. It brought to mind my favorite Robert Earl Keen song on that subject, "What I Really Mean." Nice to know that Randy's voice and bass playing will continue to entertain music fans forever.
When Tim Schmit sang the high part, although great, it was just the high part, but when Randy did it, it changed the sound of the band - that was The Eagles' sound.
Randy Meisner is a legend. Great high- range singing voice and some real nice bass playing. Listen again to “Hotel California” and focus on the bass. Great bands need great rhythm sections and Randy laid down solid bass lines. His health issues kept him from re-joining the Eagles when Bernie Leadon played with them in around 2015. Who will replace these fine musicians??? Who will be the next great rock band?? I think the days of outstanding bands like The Eagles are sadly over and gone.
Absolutely love try and love again Hotel California Randy Meisner💘🥰🥰💘 great guitar playing
Nice tribute, Randy was special.
Every one of these guys you feature in this video are case studies in people who are underappreciated and didn't get the credit they deserved. Not many people can claim to be country rock pioneers to the degree of Furay, and he's the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet. Leadon...another Pioneer first with Dillard & Clark, working with Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman with the Burritos, and then the Eagles. Messina...an amazing guitarist and even his first production work with Buffalo Springfield has its genius moments. And the list goes on. Thank you so much for keeping these names and their talents out in front. You are are a real champion for these people.
Still my favorite group. My car would not start unless Poco was playing. They influenced a lot of music.
Randy singing take it to the limit on a another level
Thank you for this. One of my all time favorite singer, songwriterS.😢😢😢😢❤
RIP Randy.
Richie Furay is so humble. Saw him twice. With Timothy as a surprise guest!
What about to many hands----outstanding song.
It's sort of strange. I've noticed over the years that there are a great number of extremely good musicians all over the country. To put together a talented band in which the personalities and the chemistry click is quite difficult sometimes. Writing hit songs is probably the hardest, most stressful thing a group goes through. Then of course ego's start to come into play. I think boredom too because the real popular touring bands play the same songs every night in 25 or 30 cities. It's an even harder road once you're famous.
"Gonna try and Love again". Epic heartfelt Randy did his best?
Ty for the nice video!
THANK YOU GOT GETTING THIS TOGETHER SO FAST
Hope we can convince some of the records/CDs to bring back the ones (2) Randy did that are currently not available. RIP
RIP Randy
Thanks for doing this John. I don't think anyone has the depth of personality and interest you provide. Great history lesson on the rock scene from that Era.
I was disappointed Randy was not on hell freezes over
Really enjoy the story of nature befriending the animals Randy Meisner me myself I'm an animal lover raccoons skunks Black Crowes❤❤❤ I love mountain lions and bears
Take it to the limit never captured me emotionally like it did every one else however that one about my old fifty five hit me deeply.
Thanks John, just got to hear this as I've been in Europe until the other day. Wow, really saddened to hear about Randy. When I first heard Eagles it was because friends said : "You gotta hear this new band, Bernie and Randy are in it" weren't they though! Also glad to hear you're in Calgary, used to date an EMT from there, great memories :D
Bernie was cool but Don Felder & Joe Walsh with Randy Meisner was actually the best lineup of the Eagles ever until Glen Fry screwed that up!!
Exactly right! It was kind of like that magic lineup when Lyndsey and Stevie joined FM. The Eagles should have maintained the five-way equal partnership, supported and treated Randy, one of the most talented guys, like a real friend, maybe encouraged Felder to work on his singing and get his confidence up (and, along those lines, get Henley some drum lessons with a real pro), maybe helped Joe get clean and sober earlier on, not treated the others like inferior sidemen… But I think their drug use only fueled the “Gods’”greed and continued mistreatment of the others. There were a lot of things they could have done to make an awesome band even greater-and healthier-but Glen and Don just got too selfish, egotistical, greedy and obsessed. Felder’s book discusses candidly what went on behind the scenes.
Yes, Randy Meisner was an excellent bass player and once Don Felder and then Joe Walsh came in there was a Stills-Young thing going between them.
His name is Glenn Frey,Champ. How did he do anything wrong ? You know so little about the band that you can't spell the name of one of it's most famous members. What a dope.
Randy and Bernie were founding members! They were great together. Felder came on the on the border album. Walsh came in later and was good, but Bernie was essential to the early success of The Eagles. Frey didn’t screw it all up. Frey and Henley were the leaders of the group and had to make tough decisions. Meisner quit the band.
Yeah I .watched an interview about how Don Henley and Glen Fry parted ways and what it was about. I also clips related to it on the radio. It political, personal and related to social changes of the day(Early 80s).
Guess you’ve already heard, but your audio went out after the Henry Paul interview?
When it’s cuts back to you, we don’t hear you.
Video is fine, just don’t hear you. 🤷
great show man, huge fan.
Leadon should be there
The greatest band
Henry Paul is wrong. Randy Meisner was not out of the band early. He was in the band from 71-77...they broke up in 1980. He was a foundational member.
TY for this my 2 favorite bands Poco and the Eagles my 2 fav bands that got me through grade 12. Met my wife of 42 years at the bar she got me to play take it easy on the juke box so i guess take it easy is our love song. Still married and still rockin to both bands so i guess i owe these guys a great big ty.
The best Eagle work is the first four albums the original lineup was iconic and when Don Felder joined One of these nights is the best album they ever did and Desperado is a close second
The sad thing is, is COPD is manageable, I was diagnosed 9 years ago, and after the Dr tweaked my prescriptions a couple times I haven't had a problem in 6 years.
I lost a friend to COPD a few years ago
HE LIVED IN STUDIO CITY NOT HOLLYWOOD HILLS ANY MORE. HE HAD OWNED RICK NELSONS HOME AT ONE POINT
Your audio keeps cutting out in between the interviews….
Luv ya randy...r.i.p.
There's a documentary on Henry Diltz and the album covers. It was so well done. PBS 20-odd years ago.
lost an older brother to COPD folks if you dont smoke dont start and if you do PLEASE QUIT
Hey man, I heard Terry write the dream Weaver passed away I think if anybody knew for sure it will be you’d have you heard any information on this?
Just heard now. So sad.
Sound is missing in parts of this video.
Funny talking about all the players & bands that came out of Florida back in the day and then the segue into talking about Don Felder who incidentally is from Florida, but no mention of that 😂
HAHAHAH Felder did look like one of the Bee Gees.
Henry Diltz is a treasure, as is fellow photographer Ethan Russell.
Out of the band fairly early?
Maybe he meant Poco? That stuck out to me too 😂
He left Poco as soon as the first album was recorded. He wasn't credited on the album and was removed from the cover painting.
I never really liked any of Henley's solo music. Anyway, when ii came between Henley and Frey, I liked Frey more, but Randy was 100% my favorite.
I was disappointed that Randy and Henley both didn't do lead vocals together like Glenn and Henley always did..
i liked there first album when they all sang almost the same amount of songs as opposed to other albums which had mostly just 2 singing.
.Randy's voice complemented everyone else's . IMO the Eagles never would have taken off without their wings, Bernie and Randy.
♥️♥️R.I.P. ❤ Randy
did he ever write his memoir / s.?
i’d certainly read it.!
☺️😊😃
* posthumous book, in the making..?! 😉
✌🏻🇦🇺🌏🤘🏻
It’s a shame that Don and Glenn and their huge egos and hunger to make all the money destroyed the Eagles. They were both two faced liars and wouldn’t believe a word out of Henley’s mouth in tribute to Randy. He’ll be joining Glenn in hell. How ironic.
I thougt Don and Glenn were a bit of jeaulos, because Randy was THE MAN who gives that beautiful sound of the Eagles. Don henley mostly looks a bit of grumpy. Together they were very nice, but Randy was the best singer of all.
Who knows if Glen and Don had not been such control freaks Randy and Don Felder May have never left the band.
I heard them on the Hotel California tour and the were Brilliant, better than the Eagles with all the extra musicians and backing vocalists.
The eagles without felder doesn’t have that edge
It’s too bad the egos of two rotted away what was a great band .
It's amazing how many LA rockers were slammed in the 1970s by critics who dismissed all of them as offering bland, overproduced easy-listening yacht music with weak arrangements, when today you have a new generation of critics singing their praises. And now critics' darlings like Bob Dylan now talk about their appreciation for the Eagles . . . ha ha ha, THAT must have shocked Robert Christgau! 😄
Gary Wright
Not sure why, but around the 7:21 mark, your mic went silent. I see your lips moving, just no sound.
Then at 8:43, the sound comes back.
Then at 9:20 silence… again.
What's even odder is no one else has mentioned this.
Randy's departure from Poco is sketchy. Richie blames Jimmy, Jimmy blames Richie. Something else took place..Only they know. Randy, had great musical talent, he wasn't just in the band. Why not let him in when mixing. 🤔
As a bassist in recording bands, I think Randy's departure from Poco was hasty. I never wanted to be part of the mixing process because it's boring and the producer needs to be totally responsible for that work.I never needed or wanted to be there for that.
How did Joe Walsh “save” The Eagles? The success of that greatest hits album suggests that they weren’t exactly a train wreck with Leadon
Terrible take (not by the host)
Some critics thought Joe Walsh gave the Eagles a heavier meatier sound and that their sound before he joined was lame. Or as Robert Christgau wrote in his review of 'One of These Nights' - "Put on your neckboots and wade through the slickshit and you may get a kick from the lyrics -- these boys like lotsa malaise with their mayonnaise. But in rock and roll the difference between tragedy and soap opera is usually the acting, here so completely immersed in stringing sings that even the aptest phrases are reduced to the clichés they restate." He gave it a C+.
True.Silly thing to say.
Haha, you mean more like "catapulted" to oblivion! Actually Leadon explained that the "business" parties were already looking for the muscle that Leadon didn't feel like being at that point. The "Gr Hits" thing was buying time for the big move, and financing it. Smart guys.
Bernie was and is incredible.
Now...
It's generally believed the eagles were stuck in that "sons of the pioneer" genre.
Now add the slight changes from the On the Border & One of the nights albums...Bernie was not happy, he wanted to remain Alt country. I'm guessing you know about the beer incident, so...enter Joe Walsh. Walsh and the Eagles both shared Bill Szymczyk as a producer and I think Irving Azoff as manager. Walsh added a blues rock edge to their sound and a huge stage presence! Just watch the Eagles documentary and observe how Frey talks about Walsh. BTW the Hell freezes over reunion was predicated on Walsh being involved by getting sober.
I saw Walsh & Frey on tour the year before Hell freezes over reunion. That was Frey getting Walsh back in shape for what what was going to happen.
Walsh was and is a beast and absolutely contributory to their success from 1975 to this day.
Don't hate on Walsh.
Cheers 🍷
Love the Eagles, always have. Not a hater. My explanation and opinion concerning the Eagles. Glenn Frey,,,,, through the inspiration of Linda Ronstadt,,,,,, formed the Eagles. He was not a leader. He took her advice, thankfully to move on and that was a good thing. He chose good musicians in the very beginning. He needed a drummer and thats where Henley comes into the picture. For morale, everything was pretty much in alignment before Henley comes onboard. Henley was smarter than Frey and he knew this. Henley knew, early on, that the Eagles had great potential, moreso than Frey. This is where the trouble begins. Henley wanted CONTROL, thus he begins manipulating Frey. If the other band members didn't like the new rules and regulations, then screw them. Leadon, Meisner, Felder, Walsh, and later on Schmit, were "employees" of the Eagles. Nothing more. Nothing less. Frey being a "follower", went right along with Henley. THIS WAS, actually the beginning of the end for the Eagles, and this was early on. They were a GREAT band for sure, but they could have been a much much much GREATER band if Henley had not brought his poison to the table. Very sad actually. Henley was a liberal socialist from the beginning and this in itself caused personality problems with the other band members. Research this for yourself. Excluding Henley,,,,,the Eagles were tremendously infested with talent from the beginning,,,,,,, Vocally and Instrumentally.
Why not just let randy b there.
Ugh...Richie F. comes across as the insecure big shot.
