    1500s are capable of following grandmaster lines for several moves, while always being at the risk of hanging their most important piece for no reason

    • @maxkho00
      @maxkho00 2 роки тому +36

      I think the bigger reason he is 1500 is his lack of understanding. Even 2400s like myself can hang a piece like NL did from time to time ─ that's not the decisive factor here.
      In this video alone, he demonstrated serious gaps in understanding, including not understanding that doubled pawns are only bad when isolated and are actually an asset if they bring a pawn closer to the centre and open up a file, being totally oblivious to the concept of weak pawns, underestimating the value of material in the endgame (especially the value of a non-isolated, non-backwards central pawn), overestimating the value of pawn protection near the king in the endgame, and being unaware of the bishop pair advantage, and that's just off the top of my head ─ there are probably other strategical concepts that he has neglected in the video that I just forgot about.
      Tactically, he has also shown some deficits, including only calculating just one or two lines as deeply as possible rather than calculating ALL of his opponent's viable responses to only a sufficient depth, tunnel-visioning, and not considering checks when that's one of the first things that you should calculate.
      Yes, 1500s, in general, have a great understanding of the fundamentals and have excellent board vision, with many having impressive pattern recognition, which is why, every once in a while, they really can play like grandmasters (no exaggeration). For example, I was impressed how quickly NL was able to identify many advanced plans and tactical ideas. But rating describes your average level, not your peak level, and it's impossible to consistently play at a high level with all of the deficits described above and MANY more.

    Hey NL, I love the chess! Btw the trap you might be thinking of is the poisoned pawn. At time 12:41, let queen cap if they want but push KnC3, they take Knd5 to take pawn, and they can’t stop the rook king fork without losing tempo or screwing up their pawn position. Plus it’s a pawn for pawn! If knight tries to protect that pawn just trade him down

    hey NL, the defense you play to the queen's gambit, 2... nf6, is actually losing for black, because white can play cxd5, and then after nxd5 recapturing the pawn white wins a tempo on the knight and gains the full center with 4. e4, attacking the knight and forcing it back. instead, you want to play 2... e6 or 2... c6, solidifying your center with a pawn

    Oh man that first misclick hurts my soul, we've all been there in online chess.
    I also wanna say that I have been critical in a couple of comments but chess is just that type of game where when you're stronger, you'll see better moves and it hurts to see bad moves played. I absolutely think you should be kinder to yourself as you are still rated decently above average in terms of chess players, and way above average in terms of the entire population. Plus your rating is probably roughly 1000 points higher than the chat average.
    I think the only place you really need concrete improvement is time, both in terms of the clock and in terms of tempo. You know yourself you can let your clock get too low on easy moves and then you don't have time for the critical moves. And then sometimes I think you give away too much free tempo to your opponent, letting them control the flow of the game. You are a great attacking player so you should be the one taking every tempi you get to pressure your opponent!
