  • 🌊 “It’s really time for us to go.” I said jokingly to my wife as we loaded groceries into the car. She’d asked me to stop by Joann Crafts after Trader Joe’s in order to get some craft supplies for a bouquet she’s making for Emily’s graduation. “What do you mean?” she asked. “Well,” I said “I know how to get to Joann Crafts without the navigation app, it’s just down on Adams street. That’s how I know it’s time for us to leave Huntington Beach. It’s because I can finally get around town without a map. That means this place is familiar, and it’s therefore time then for us to leave for someplace new, different and unfamiliar. That’s how you and I have always done life. We’re always on the move together for whatever’s new.”
Only this time it’s different. We’re old now, and it’s time for us to stop our forward progress in favor of a more settled life someplace nice where we can enjoy however many summers remain.
Later, I told Yumiko that I want her to find us a house in Japan which we can fill with essentials, like paperclips. “Paperclips??” She asked. “Yes, we’ve moved so much that we never have essentials like paperclips when we need them. Let’s make a final home where we can have a drawer where we can keep paperclips, envelopes, glue, staples and all the rest. A junk drawer! We’ve never had a proper junk drawer together. Let’s build a new life where we’ll feather our nest at last with the superfluities and dross of the sane and settled way of life. Let’s live now so that we can die leaving Emily with a small junk drawer to rummage through after we’re gone, muttering to herself “Why did mom and dad keep all this crap?”
A junk drawer is a good and proper goal I think-after this lifetime of so many lives. (KB)

🌊 On Day 150 of the Ocean Swim Series, join Kurt Bell and his wife Yumiko as they face the poignant realization that it’s time to transition from their life of constant movement to a more settled existence. 🏊‍♂️🌅 While loading groceries and picking up supplies for their daughter Emily’s graduation bouquet, Kurt humorously notes how well he knows the streets of Huntington Beach-enough to navigate without a map. This familiarity sparks a conversation about finally finding a permanent home where they can live out their days, possibly in Japan, complete with a well-stocked “junk drawer” filled with everyday essentials like paperclips and staples. 📎📌
This episode reflects on the deeper meanings of setting roots and creating a legacy of small, ordinary treasures for future generations to discover. From the busyness of Trader Joe’s to the aisles of Joann Crafts, and finally to the serene moments by the ocean, today’s swim is about embracing the beauty of the mundane as a symbol of stability and continuity. Join us as we explore what it means to finally say, “It’s really time for us to go” and prepare for a life that’s not just about moving, but also about cherishing the place we choose to stop. 🌊🛒🌺
