I remember moving to New Zealand for high school back in 2004. I stayed with this lovely 70 year old Dutch couple, we called them Opa and Oma (Dutch for grandpa and grandma), throughout my entire high school life.
I have never tied a tie before my junior ball. I borrowed a suit from my brother but couldn’t get hold of a tie so I was gonna go without a tie. Opa gave me one of his ties while I was getting ready and taught me his technique. I can still vividly remember the big smiles on their faces when they told me how good I looked in a formal suit.
It’s been 15 years and I still use Opa’s technique to this day.
RIP Cornelius. Thank you for treating us brothers like your own sons. Thank you for always being there and standing up for me when I needed it the most. Thank you for being a father figure to 3 Asian kids living abroad. You taught us so much and we will forever be grateful. We love you both.

I remember when I was 5 years old I wanted to tie my dad's tie on him before work. My dad would teach me every morning before work to tie the tie on him. I got really good at it coming up with tie patterns. I told him for every special moment I wanted to do his tie. From 5 - through 18yrs old, I did my dad's tie every morning. On the day of my graduation from High school, I tied my dad's tie on him and he said, " Oh son I'm going to remember this " Years gone by I found the girl of my dreams. On our wedding day, my dad comes by my room and asked" Son are you going to do my tie?" I said of course. We laughed and cried doing his tie. On January 20, 2020, my father passed away from a heart attack. During the viewing, I did my dad's last tie on him. Love you dad

I remembered my dad, especially when men came to his rescue. My dad used to tie my neck tie for me when I was in middle school because I didn't know how to. I learned doing it on my own when I was in high school.
And now, I'm the one tying his tie for him because his hands are always shaky due to his illness. I wanna give him everything I can, and I wanna do everything for him as much as possible. Repay the love and care he spent on me all throughout my childhood and adolescent days.
Even if I try to be strong because I'm a man, I just cannot help tearing up from watching this.

Yeah, it’s incredibly biased... I’m from the Netherlands but lived in Guangzhou during my exchange and genuinely had the best time of my life. People were so friendly. The first time I stepped into a small restaurant, I didn’t have mobile payment set up yet and the owner didn’t have enough physical cash at that time because literally everything works through the mobile ecosystem. The person behind in the queue helped out and paid for my entire meal. Even though I offered to transfer him the money later on or buy him something else, he continuously refused. I was so touched. You would never see this in the Netherlands...

When I was in HS, our academy has this kind of an anime inspired uniform so boys and girls had to wear a tie. I remember after the first flag ceremony, ALL FRESHMEN highschool were required to stay for a bit. The academy staffs had to teach us how to do the tie since majority of our neckties are A MESS. It was a really funny memory. You can't go to your respective classroom if you can't do a decent hoop HAHAHA
Our inside joke was like "You'll know someone's year by looking how perfect their tie is. If it's messy, it's a freshman." 😂

When I was a kid, I remembered liking tying ties so much after seeing it in a couple men who stars in movies we used to watch at home. I even dressed up long sleeves and all that so I could pair it with tie. Everyone in my family always scolds me whenever I play with them. So later as I grow up I put away the liking with ties.
Years later when I am in college, I found a little boy who I believed was in elementary in our canteen with his mother. They seemed to attend his ceremony but her mother had trouble tying his necktie. So I came in rescue and did the tying in a minute. The boy and his mother thanked me and they headed to the ceremony. I watched them with a smile on my face, and I cannot forget that since.
It brought me the memory of how everyone in my family thinks it's a weird thing to know how to tie a neck tie when you're a girl. They said it was only for men. I never learned to do it from someone, I just watched it on movies since youtube hasn't existed back then yet. But even if my family didn't know this certain morning in that canteen, I felt fulfilled. It was a skill I learned from earliest age.

I helped a guy with his tie once. I just saw him struggling and I laughed (a little too loudly) and had to stifle myself.
He looked extremely embarassed so I walked over and tried helping him while apologizing for my rude behavior, explaining it was because I remembered going in for my first interview and doing the exact same thing. This wasn't his first interview, but the first he was taking really seriously (upper paying job) and he was nervous to say the least.

The first time I had to wear a tie was when I attended school. My parents didn't know how and didn't bother to help. They'd usually leave early for work and I make my way to school around an hour and a half after them. And no matter how much I tried, even with tutorials, I just could not get it right😅.
So there I was, struggling with this lengthy cloth along the street, and an elderly guy stopped and asked if I needed help. He tied it, while showing me the steps and I was and still am super grateful😁.
It's kind of a not much but people are rarely nice to me. Thank you kind sir💫💜
