There was nothing stopping Joel from playing Joel the way Marlene played Marlene, the only one they needed was a new Ellie because her voice actor is like 33 now
Pedro did a fantastic job, I disagree. Troy is also a voice actor which is completely different from acting and they clearly were going for quality with their main cast. He did well in his small part though, he gets his flowers from me.
My only actual gripe with the show is that there wasn't a scene where Joel was quickly swiping his hands over tables, collecting supplies or building shit out of his backpack
That would be boring to majority of viewers and they would have to dedicate run time to scavenging and building it up and being used, everyone just wants to see the drama not the details, shame really
I did notice a scene or two where they take off their backpacks and start fumbling around in it, and (i think Ellie? cant remember) asks "what are you guys doing?" I always thought that was a callback to the game and the backpack crafting.

The infected part in episode 5 when hundreds of infected swarm from the ground like ants is one the most scariest & beautiful things in the show man it was worth every second they put so much effort into it and delivered in a spetacular way.
Yeah I feel like Charlie messed up not bringing up this episode.. I mean seriously. I have never seen a portrayal of zombies in a show or movie be more terrifying than what they did in that episode. The most terrifying zombies of all time is the last of us show zombies and world war z.. if we ever have an apocalypse and it’s these types of zombies.. we are fucked beyond belief. Also they really hammered in the fact that these zombies are like almost a hive mind with a sort of sentience as it is a parasite. It’s goal is to protect it’s kind and spread as much as possible. Which is infinitely more terrifying.
the fact they casted the voice actress for ellie to play as ellie's mom was a super good casting choice imo. the whole scene with her in the last episode was so intense and emotional too !! she did so well at conveying how a mother will do anything to protect their child. literally every actor / actress was perfect for their role
One thing I like about the infected is that even though I would have liked to see them more, they’re pretty effective every time we see them. There might be one time in the whole show that an encounter with the infected doesn’t lead to someone getting bitten or killed, so even if they aren’t around a ton, they do a decent job of showing how easily the infection spreads
I have to say I would of rather they spent money from eps 3 and 7 on zombies especially ep 7 as it was just not that good of an episode and watching a 14 and 18 year old develop a relationship is not my cup of tea, I get the story is focused on people but the limited amount of infected just in my opinion didn't feel good for the show at all as it felt as though they didn't have impact and the world was alot more empty. If they explored and flushed the infected out more this show would have been amazing but now that it's over and I'm not huffing copium the show is just decent
@Joshua Debosh one of my biggest problems with this show when any infected popped up the characters lost there shit Joel killed countless infected but when we see the first infected in the show he shoots them in the stomach with an ar15 instead of the head like he doesn't know how to end them
and this is why you are not a writter. @@yaboyyoob7531 You show how she grows not because how she looks but her personality. And that´s how you write characters, that´s why pedro pascal worked, because he is well written even when fucking people were being the crying babies as they usually are even before the show fucking come up.
My biggest complaint about the show is that they spent so much time setting up the infected in the first few episodes and even showing that if you kill one they all know where you are, but they literally never mention it again after episode 2.
Yes I thought that was foreshadowing for it going to happen in another episode and it never did. It was really interesting lore to add but they didn't do anything with it :/
I think that's more an explanation of why infected aren't present as much in the show, if it were like the games where Joel and Ellie merced a lot of infected then that setup wouldn't need to happen. Instead, it makes more sense in the show if they just avoid infected entirely, because they're a hivemind now.
Joel wouldn't take any route that has infected. They would stay as far away from the horde as possible so it makes sense that they don't run into the infected, but hunters and bandits instead. The cordyceps network is the show's version of spores. It explains how the cordyceps take over quickly. They are all connected and have their own sense of intelligence.
Personally I was a fan of how they had the original VA cast do cameos as side characters. Troy Baker was the cannibal that Ellie buried a butcher knife into. And the original VA for Ellie played Ellie's mom which is incredibly poetic
I am so in love with the decision to cast Ashley Johnson as Anna. Ashley has spoken about how deeply personal Ellie has been for her and how moved she is by the impact her portrayal has had. To give her the chance to play the character who literally births her into the world is amazing and heartwarming. "You fucking tell them, Ellie" is such a beautiful line in context.
When I was watching it I think i subconsciously recognized Ellie's VA, but I had no idea thats what she looked like. So i was like, "damn is this Ellie in the future coming home to Dina or something?" I just realized this no, it seems crazy
Some changes I thought worked well Sam being deaf and 8 years old. My God his death hits you so much harder. Henry's actor was great too All of the voice actors having roles was great to let them be a part of this and they all crushed their roles especially Ashley as Anna The Joel suicide attempt story hit so much harder and his choked up line to Ellie "it wasn't time that did it" the eyes welled up Pedro and Bella deserve every award
The did those changes for the quotas in order to be able to get nominations. If you have disabled, gay or minority characters, it allows you to get a nominations. It doesn’t mean that you will get one but you pass the criteria to be able to get it.
You thought Sam was better in the show? That's wild. The game did so much better in my opinion. The shows version of that entire series of events was pretty bad imo
@@awesomereviews1561 I’m not trying to attack you personally but just this argument because I hear it a lot - minorities and LGBT people EXIST IN REAL LIFE. It’s mainstream media that’s trying to catch up to real life.
My only real complaint for the show is the pacing. I understand it’s hard to translate a game to tv but more scenes with the infected would’ve fixed that. And besides the addition of Kathleen, most of the changes in the show were actually improvements from the game imo.
what i liked about the amount of infected in the show is that it made them way scarier. every time they appeared someone died, so when we watched one appear we already knew something bad was going to happen.
it kind of had a downside too, at least for me. when joel has too choose between a cure and ellie, the decision doesn't seem as crucial because it doesn't look like there are that many infected out in the world anyways.
@@valqzx1144 exactly, and I don't see a reason why they didn't show more scenes even like stealth scenes more in the show I mean like they have the budget for it AND a tv show is also there to entertain, not that 2 full episodes about gay love of mostly side characters were THAT entertaining so why not have more infected scenes ya know
@@kylemajerczyk8160 thats different tho, last of us show is like almost a 1 to 1 copy of a singleplayer game, arcane is basically a lore show for like a handful of characters from league which is a moba
The world building/set design is so detailed I couldn’t believe it. I live in SLC and during the giraffe scene I could literally see my apartment in it, halfway up the tallest building on the right. They got the details perfectly.
100% they did it that way so that in Season 2 they can show it again in real-time loud and frenetic AF while Abby is dodging shots and trying to figure out what's happening
it's to show that he's not killing for pure violence, yk, like just for the feeling of seeing people die, but he did it because of his heart (which yes sounds corny but listen) it actually makes you focus on how motivated he was to not let another person he cared about die, rather than the fact he just fucking shot up an entire abandoned hospital LOL
I agree the penultimate episode was so climactic that the finale felt more rushed because there was less room for recovery and hope. I feel like if there was a whole episode dedicated to joel helping ellie recover from what she went through, as well as showing their trust grow, it would have made that decision joel made in the last episode to lie to her have a lot more impact.
It honestly would’ve been nice, but then again the game had also chosen to not show that as well. I think it was the interaction with Joel and Ellie about Sarah that helped grow within that area, as well as when Ellie was drowning that gave all the more reason for Joel to save her, especially when the last thing he saw from her was her drowning.
@@ItsDanbo when it comes to stuff like that, i do think that they should add more scenes between joel and ellie to make his decision more climactic. This is mainly cuz the show has the video game as reference but it doesnt mean it has to copy it fully. For example, sarah's death (imo) was more gut wrenching cuz of they added a whole breakfast scene and stuff.
my only complaint about the show is the same complaint i have with the game, it’s that no matter how much time we spend with Joel and Ellie it never feels like enough i just want more 😂
I feel that.. you get a great sense of how their dynamic develops and it’s so fun to watch them interact, but the plot doesn’t allow much time for niceties sadly. Ofc not something i would change tho, you need the rough to make the smooth
I definitely had a similar gripe with the rushed ending, but for a slightly different reason. While the father daughter relationship had definitely been established at that point, I felt like it was kind speedran in this episode. It felt they could have taken one more episode to fully flesh it out.
Or just add a short 10 min scene of fighting some infected, maybe kill a clicker and sneak pass some bloaters, and some backstory to those infected too like some notes, just to show that the world is still infecred just because you dont often see it.
Dude same, it's my only gripe with the show along with the fact the big emotional scenes in the finale felt forced and half hearted. I will defend the show from many poor criticisms, but this is one I stand by
yes!! i think the pacing for joel and ellie's relationship was a bit weak; they hit most of the emotional checkpoints beautifully with their own changes but i think some of the little conversations in the game weren't compensated for!
@@masterflameboss17 guy who plays david. I only watched a few, but episodes 7-9 had literally only 2 infected. Bella was an awful pick for Ellie, and so was the one chosen for Sarah. They look nothing/don't resemble the characters they play at all. List goes on
The greatest change they made IMO is actually showing us Ellie's mom and Ellie's birth. A better explanation for why she's immune rather than "We don't know why she's like this, she just is". And on top of that, getting Ellie's original VA to play as Anna was just a cherry on top of an already beautiful sundae
No that was dumb as hell. Not only did she fart out a baby in a second, the cordon was only attached for like 10 seconds after the bite. Besides if spores got to the baby it should have infected her as well, so we're back to "we don't know why she's immune bit she just is" territory, except now they tried to justify it with bullshit science. The original explanation of a "happy" incident with the cordyceps mutating was just better.
Yeah, that wasn't fair. Ha. Ellie and Joel's acting when they are reunited was already tear jerking, but that line sent everyone I was watching it with over the edge. I feel this show is better than anyone thought it was going to be. I hope it opens eyes about the usage of the source material. Clearly the source material worked if you are now making a tv show/movie out of it, why totally ditch it?
@@MacCheekz1990 I thought the same thing! I love how in the game when he takes Ellie off the table you have to run away from fireflies but they don’t want to shoot at you because you are holding Ellie and he whispers to her as you run away, just beautiful shit man.
Watched this show with my father as a father-daughter bonding time and we loved it! Gotta respect how true to the source material they kept it (as it should be), some things were even an improvement since everything from the game can't be translated just like it is. Amazing show, going to watch it again! :)
Neil said he was so excited for this specifically because his parents could finally experience a story he put so much into, and I think that's nice. I can get nit-picky when comparing the show to the game, but at the end of the day, I'm just glad a lot of people got to enjoy this story that otherwise never would have because they don't play video games.
I wanted my mum to watch it, but after shw watched Glenn and Abraham get rolled in walking dead, she's done with zombie shows lol. Doesn't like the blood and guts.
My only minor complaint is the lack of infected, especially with the amazing effects they had on them. Luckily the showrunners have said there will be more in season 2!
@@lucaswilliams2292I haven’t even watched the show, but based on how Charlie said the ending was rushed I could only assume they were running tight on the budget by the end.
@Lucas Williams it's obvious they were lacking budget at points, but what makes it disappointing is news sources stating they had more budget than Game of thrones...

They literally went from, “She’s being prepped for surgery” to “I don’t have time for this” to **Hospital shootout** to **saving Ellie** in like 5 minutes
When I saw 43 minute episode and they spent 15 on ellies mom I'm like yeah they're not even gonna take time to flesh out the doctor, and of course they didn't Just like the game, they're magically going to make him important after the fact
You only get that feeling if you've played the game. Both characters had reached their emotional climaxes to serve the story at that point. Joel and Ellie have fully opened up to each other so theres no need for amy more interactions from a pacing perspective
I haven't played the game and I also felt the same about it. I felt like this was supposed to be the most hard hitting emotional scene in the show, but it didn't. Joel went on a killing spree, ellie is saved, they talk, and the show just ends and I was like whatever
Literally part 2 is SO easy to fix. ALL you have to do is characterise abby BEFORE she goes golfing (humor hiding real pain) if we can see it from her point of view BEFORE what happens happens we wont just TOTALLY hate her.
Exactly. I was hoping they include Abby's flashbacks in the first season, or at the very least at the start of the second season. Give people a chance to sympathize with Abby instead of making them decide right there and then to hate her forever.
i’m pretty sure the main message of tlou2 is how perspective and bias warps your opinion on people. you’re supposed to hate abby when she kills joel because someone that played as joel inherently feels connected to him and thinks he doesn’t deserve what he got, which i think can also be true considering he did what he did to save someone he loves but at the end of the day he still murdered a whole fucking hospital. all abby cares about is that he killed her dad so she is justified in getting revenge but ofc the player doesn’t realize this until the flashbacks. then at that point you may understand that abby really isn’t a worse person than joel (or ellie in part 2). what i’m saying is this creative choice was made for a reason and to completely change that would do the exact opposite of “fix” part 2. the problem isn’t the game it’s people choosing not to use basic media literacy skills 🚶🏾♀️
I think the pacing of the finale was well done. It captured that dissociative blackout rage one would get from someone telling them they’re planning to murder someone they love. It wasn’t drawn out scenes of shootouts and Joel pleading with the fireflies. It was cold and Joel was on a mission to kill with 0 hesitation. There’s even a moment when he shakes his head and blinks as if he’s coming too from a blackout thinking “wait what did I just do”. Loved it.
I was watching with my wife and she was saying how over the top all the murder was for one person and I told her that's exactly the point of the game, the criticism it received and which it addressed in the second game.
I think Joel's spree was fine, but Charlie's right that there definitely could have been more leading up to it. It would have been nice to include the underground section and especially Joel desperately giving Ellie CPR as a nice little hint that everything around him ceases to matter when Ellie's in danger, and then we see the culmination of that in the quick, detached way he executed all the fireflies.
The hospital scene itself was very well done, the pacing issue comes from the fact that the entire Salt Lake City section is 20 minutes, they could have easily made it 2 episodes, adapt the underground section so we get more infected, maybe another bloater since they spent half a million dollars on the suit to use it for 30 seconds but just more Joel, Ellie, and some infected time really makes the hospital scene hit that much harder
Pedro Pascal is not a golden Lion, but a Viper on stage. He has the whole package as an actor. I love how he is able to play a deeply hurt, vulnerable and also extremely merciless man and at the same time a loving and caring one, which is insanely hard to do in a believable manner.
I think one standout feature for me was that the episodes felt like actual EPISODES, as in they often felt like standalone stories. Some shows fall into the trap of essentially just being “pauses” and “plays” of the storyline. It makes the episodes so much more memorable, like the 1st, 3rd and 8th episodes.
But the problem is 8 should have been 2 episodes. That sequence in the game really helped build the trust between David and Ellie and seeing him for who he is makes the impact even harder
With your Bill point I understand missing the direct interactions, I feel it was heavily implied how important their relationships were. Bill leaves everything to Joel, he wouldn’t have done that for someone he barely knew, also I feel the note was more implication, I think what they did, focusing on him and his partner, really built on the idea of its tragedy/romance/emotional. I really feel like they did that well even with the sacrifice of less interaction.
I wish we could've seen a flashback to what life was like for Joel and Tommy in the 20 year period between outbreak and boston. Hopefully they explore something like that for season two.
I thought they rushed Ellie and Joels relationship which is the most important thing about the TLOU story. Like when I sit down and think about it, I feel like Ellie and Joel were not very fleshed out in their relationship, and this (for me) really devalues the emotional moments in the show where they try to show how much they’ve bonded. For example, the giraffe scene, post-david fight, etc. I think they either should've added 2-3 more episodes that are Joel and Ellie-Centered, or make episodes 3 & 7 into Joel and Ellie episodes.
One episode in particular felt completely unnecessary and like a waste of time personally. Could have skipped it and not missed a single beat on the show. Also all the plot holes (unrelated to the game) and common sense stupidity in the episode I'm talking about is just off the charts. Actually was angry watching it. Also why did they cast rose from two and a half men in the 4/5 episode? Did not feel like a good fit for a villain. EDIT: EPISODE 4/5 are the episodes Melanie Lynskey were cast in
Bella Ramsey really grew on me this show like every single episode her acting felt like it was improving literally every episode she did phenomenal in but that last episode was probably her best episode and the best episode overall in the show
I think Ellie growing on you was intentional, I found Ellie kinda of annoying at first which I think was to highlight her age and as she travels with Joel she matures. I think it’s similar to how Ashoka was written for The Clone Wars. I could be wrong though.
I LOVED THE USE OF SFX AND NOT TOTAL RELIANCE ON VFX!!!!! It worked so well, the sets were amazing and the makeup and effects for the clickers were really well done
My favorite part was when Joel said, “it’s Joelin’ time” and Ellie followed up with, “what are we, some kind of the Last of Us?” and then walked onto the sunset
I actually fully agree with your points. I think having the video game production involved in the show production really helped. It was icing on top to have Ashley Johnson play Ellie’s mom in the show - it was SO poetic and added such a depth to the already incredibly emotional scene of her death in the final episode. I think the best part is that you didn’t have to play the game to enjoy and understand the show, but playing the game added to the experience.
Pedro and Bella actually both broke the rules and experienced the game in some way. Pedro got a Playstation and watched his nephews play the game (because he couldn't figure out the controls), and Bella watched part of other people's playthroughs.
I think Joel tactfully terrorizing the entire firefly campaign wasn't supposed to be shown as something cool or action heavy like John Wick, but rather a terrifying and terrible experience for the viewers where the protagonist slowly descended to a darker path for his own desires. This is when the whole narrative of "Love" gets a much darker dimension. And it also makes sense. Joel not only lied to Ellie about the entire incident, he also avoided the verbal confrontation with Merlin and killed her on the process. This is the type of scene that is supposed to be taken a moment to sit and think about, man.
Bella Ramsey was not great imo, just all right. She even had some moments of horrible acting, like when she was in the truck with Joel and had to act waking up. Was a funny scene in the game, but was so poorly acted that I'm surprised it made it into the show. There was another moment like this but I can't remember.
Yeaaa Bella eventually grew on me but I don’t think she was the best choice for Ellie. Don’t get me wrong she did great and her acting is amazing so it did eventually grow on me. Pedro as Joel was kinda iffy at first but I think he did a great job as well. Both of their acting made up for not really coming off as Ellie and Joel to me.
@@travixo I agree she is a great actor. But, Ellie got me much more attached much more quickly then this variation. the duo seemed more natural to me then the new one.

I would’ve enjoyed for there to be some push back from the soldiers. It really does feel video gamey if he just mows them down like in the show. They should have actually had a skirmish where Joel had to throw bricks and use his wits to fight them off
I loved how they did some scenes exactly the same, like down to every last word, yet also made huge sweeping changes that worked well like with bill and frank. It shows that Druckman wasn’t just respecting the original story, but that he respects the fans too and knew exactly how to portray these characters that he deeply loves and understands. I also LOVE that he did cameos with the original cast, clearly his love for the characters extends to them too and that felt like a heartwarming nod specifically for them and the original fans. I didn’t finish season yet so idk if I’ll feel end was rushed like Charlie, but I saw clips of Joel executing people in hospital who are unarmed or surrendering and I got chills. I def think they did the character justice in those scenes as we see exactly who he was after Sarah. Joel was never the hero and I was afraid show would drift in that direction but I was dead wrong. He truly is a man that would doom all of humanity, his own included, for his daughter
This show is a good lesson for future adaptations and that's just to not change what is already perfect. I'm glad they used the same music, and it also helps that they got Neil Druckmann to work on it too. Amazing show.
This and Sandman have proven fans want things that are honest to the original concept with the writer being a huge influence as to any changes being made.
Fuck no lmao this wasn't perfect, it's great but it didn't really flesh out the father daughter relationship that well with a lot of it ramping up exponentially in the last episode and the line where Joel said it wasn't time that did it was pretty ham fisted.
The intro was EASILY the best part of the show tho especially with the forsehadowing of the neighbours, the glimpses into Sarah's character and the death scene. TLOU should've fleshed out the smaller back stories more, the Bill episode was decent but filling in more of the in between moments with Joel's descent and relationship with his brother would've been good.
@@Blueline3691 hyperbole bro. I'm aware it's not perfect, but they kept the same themes and concepts from the game and didn't try to make it something else entirely.
@@him5698 yeah I agree, in the grand scheme of things it's good for video game adaptations (although this was one of the easier ones) but there were a lot of missed opportunities for character development and world building which could've elevated it e.g. more stuff like the first episode.
I think people with no prior exposure to the original source material unanimously loved this show. At least my family/friends who I watched it with fell in love with this show.
Just judging the show at was it is : I don’t buy into Ellie’s and Joel’s relationship… he went from being cold and unresponsive to her - to calling her “baby girl” and cracking jokes in one episode.. if it was my first time seeing this story - Joel’s decision wouldn’t be as striking or have the weight it intended.. as opposed to the game.
I tried watching it with my family. They liked it, but I was just straight upset that it was so shit compared to the game, and it was annoying them so I had to drop out after ep 3 set the dumpster on fire
It’s pretty impressive how the only real complaints for the show are the pacing being a bit slow. I applaud tlou for delivering in a department of tv show adaptations that has been waning in quality
I really like how much of a threat the zombies feel in this show. I love how much of a threat the normal infected felt and clickers felt even more terrifying than when I fought them in the games and the bloater was an absolute NIGHTMARE. Even tho they weren't around sometimes whenever they were they felt like an unstoppable force you couldn't just fight your way through them.
@@psyb0rgz447 The fact that no one in the show is superhuman like in the games makes it impossible to even survive one infected, let alone a horde of them. Every time we see infected in the show someone ends up dying, which is realistic bc they full-on sprint at you and rip you apart, which shows how unrealistic it would be for Joel and Ellie to have to deal with them on their own in multiple episodes without one of them dying.
yeah the last of us zombies are probably the scariest and most dangerous if we are talking about the live action shows i really wish they showed more infected like Charlie mentioned and they should of made that scene where Joel shoots infected upside down when he got trapped .... but in games there are lot of crazy zombies, to me the most scary were the volatiles from dying light tho
I hope they translate more video game stories into shows as well as this. My mother understood why I played so many games like this when I told her that the game follows the exact same story as the series. I just hope their success carries over to season 2 and they aren't blinded by fortune or greed.
I do love how visceral they made that last hospital scene, the game didn't make me question "is this okay" nearly as much. Like they really drove in that there is no good or bad in this world, it's just survival. Though I think there should have been one ep before to further cement him and ellie because he was out of it for 2 eps
My parents have been watching the show and have been loving it so far. They said their favorite episode was episode three which focused on Bill and Frank
It's a great episode, no doubt. But Joel slaughtering everyone is the best part for me. It shows the horrors of unconditional love, which is the thesis of the story.
I've got my minor gripes and nitpicks, but overall the show is amazing. The cinematography, music, and especially the acting were all incredible. If Bella and Pedro don't win awards for this show it'll be a crime
@@sds187 I love the way Bella delivers her lines. Only on episode 2 but loved how she delivered the lines when she was being interrogated and chained in a room. She felt like a realistic teen representation.
Not once did Joel find a recurve bow in the middle of a long drawn out fight & proceed to take out a dozen armed men with the accuracy of an Olympic level Archer
I can't tell you how much I love the fact that Joel expresses to Tommy that he feels inadequate to protect Ellie in episode 6. It's so freaking human and its so relatable. I would 100% feel the same as him in that scenario, not being good enough to look after her. I really loved that scene. And imo Joel feels so much more human in this version then in the game, though I still love the game.
Honestly, I can give it 99% just because of the breath of fresh air it was to watch a good game-adaptation show for once, even if some of the changes didn't hit the mark for me, when I compare these to the depth this show gave to like everything else, The infection, the characters, the factions... And none of that felt like some fanfic written by a 15y.o. They actually respected the original work, and that is just a miracle in this genre.
I agree on the last episode, I was showing my non-gamer wife the show for the first time and was excited to see her reaction to the reveal at the end. Wish they could have made the ending more dramatic because it didn't have a massive impact for her. They did change things to make it more dramatic in previous episodes, like the Sam and Henry episode where instead of dying alone in another room Sam tells Ellie he is bit and it just makes for a much more emotional moment. But overall, it was a sick 1st season
A very good show in my opinion. There were a few slower episodes but the other episodes were so good they probably just made them look bad. I can’t see how someone would dislike a show like this. Probably one of my favourite recent made shows
It was implied that most of the infected already expired due to old age/dehydration, and the ones that didn't were killed off in droves by FEDRA or thrive in secret colonies underground - which humans haven't discovered yet. This show added a biological aspect to the infected and made them feel more like forces of nature (quietly sleeping unless disturbed like real fungal colonies) rather than just obstacles Joel and co have to actively go through. It was a great choice and adds a layer of intrigue to the creatures I think Do wish they expand more on the cordyceps lore in the next season.
Except that hurts the whole needing the cure and wondering why humanity is struggling. Also the new concept was just completely underused and only said they were trapped underground. It's funny you're confused on what even happened because the actual reason was that they just put them there somehow.
@@ValentinoMarino11 they don't say that at all tho. It also doesn't make sense how it works in this new version especially when they can also magically be trapped underground. Clickers are supposed to both be absent most places but a huge threat at the same time and it doesn't quite work. You can probably criticize the game for having too many in its circumstances I think but the opposite here. It seems like theh would have been dealt with ages ago without spores.
@@ValentinoMarino11 I don't think they ever said they die after the runner stage, I think they just have it that only a few of the runners evolve to clickers, but they definitely don't just die
I was absolutely blown away with this one, I had a whole one complaint and you already addressed it. There wasn't enough of the infected. By otherwise it was done so well and so emotionally investing. Just spitballing here on that I feel like maybe they could have both fleshed out the ending and given us more infected by having the sequence under the bridge from the game serve as a flashback. Just give us an episode of Joel and Ellie alone making that final push towards the hospital and having to work together in the way we see more often in the game.
One thing most people missed was that some of the characters like Eli’s mom was actually the original voice for Ellie same with Tommy’s or voice actor in the 3rd episode who got killed by the bloater.
They're not just voice actors, they did the motion capture too. Troy Baker (original Joel) was David's right hand man and Marlene is the same actress from the game. No Nolan North annoyingly though.
@@scottneil1187 I still find it funny that David was played by Nolan North in the game since he played Nathan Drake in Uncharted. Then for the show they got Troy Baker to play James since he played Joel in The Last Of Us game series
All the actors and actresses crushed it. I agree, one more episode to space things out would have been nice, but this was still fantastic. Also Pedro Pascal going sicko mode was cool as hell.

He said that he'd give the actors the tools to the performance since he created the game and the characters so their performance would be their own instead of a poor imitation of the game.
I watched it with my son, never seem him so emotional invested in a TV series. Constantly shouting things like "No Allie, don't go in there!" And when Allie and Sam were being chased by the big truck "To the left to the left!" 🤣 Had the time of my life with the kid, loved every second of it.

Where the entire story was changed and not for the better? And moved the actual plot forward by like 10 minutes? The longest episode of the show and it devoted over an hour and a half to show 2 characters who are already dead, while making the finale 43 minutes? Nah…
from someone who found the game to be incredibly emotionally moving, seeing it being represented in live form was phenomenal. Cried a lot lol, he portrays a flawed father in a beautiful way. thanks for reviewing it charlie.
Honestly this show became one of my favorites of all time, it was perfect, everything down to the last minute detail. The casting was perfect, I couldn’t imagine anyone else for each role and the practical effects were insane. Even some of the flaws in the game were ironed out and improved. If anyone hasn’t seen it, WATCH IT!
I notice in the show I was more afraid when the Infected did appear, because whenever they appeared, someone important died. They weren't just a shooting range or a group someone could 1v8. Just one is enough to change someone's life entirely or end it. So I did like that. I can understand why people wanted to see more infected, but I do like that in the show where they appear something really bad is going to happen. I felt that way with The Walking Dead initially, till I eventually just saw the Walkers as a minor inconvenience that was there to be target practice more or less. With The Last of Us Series, I find myself actively afraid of the Infected, just one showing up frightens me, because of what's been established whenever they appear. I don't want the show to lose that. In the game it's different because of player engagement, but if they did that in the show, the infected I'd worry would lose the intimidation factor they currently have. But anyway ^_^ I understand why people wanted to see more of them :)
When they said not to play the games to the actors Thats fine As long as the director REALLY STRONGLY understands everything about what they're adapting.
I wouldve liked to have seen more of the infected in the show aswell, i think the museum scene is done brilliantly and perfectly captures the game, but the thing i loved about Tlou is that the infected were real threats and were actually scary. I adored how instead of "the undead" or via a "virus" the infected were actually a real thing, only present withing insects yada yada. (cordiceps). But when you encounter the infected you know that you have to take your time, and sometimes even Joel etc would comment on them. The infected play a massive role in apocalypse games and i think people tend to forgot that, in the game when you come across a runner or a clicker lets say, it makes you realise what the world has come to. As Joel once said "do i need to remind you what is out there", i like how the characters take it seriously. One thing i always appreciated when playing through the games is that theres always a reference to what the world used to be or just simple things that used to happen. Like when Ellie was flabbergasted over a model, or when Sam was trying to convince Ellie that ice cream trucks were a thing. Something Tlou was very good at was making me feel sad or even lucky that, thats not the world we live in. Sure the show is still mind blowing, and when we see the infected the scenes with them in it are impactfull and memorable, like the bloater scene but sometimes when watching the show i forget that its even tlou or a zombie apocalypse at all. Anyhow thats my shitty rant.
I really think people only feel like that finale was rushed because the runtime was short. I found out a week prior that it was going to be a 45 min episode and had that clearly in my mind and my friend (who hasn’t played it)’s mind going in. We loved it, thought it was totally climactic.
@@SUBZER0GREEN I do agree that although it was a brilliant episode it ended up being a large tangent from the story. If they had cut the cancer plot and had Bill and Frank fall out, with Ellie and Joel meeting Bill afterwards and having it progress like the game from there, it would’ve been a lot cleaner.
@@ParzivalTheThird It was too late for Bill and Frank to have a falling out, because unlike in the game, they resolved that first argument we saw. In the game, that obviously festered, and led to resentment (read Frank's note again).
When I saw that intro for the last episode I thought it would focus more on flashbacks for the fireflies to give more conext about the hospital cause that’s something we didn’t get much at all until the second game

Tbh I was skeptical going into the last episode, kept checking the time left when the whole anna thing was going on and I had no idea how they'd do this in less than half an hour, and idk how they did it, but I can't think of a better way to show that whole fight sequence, it's not just a pew pew finale fight, it's just a descent, pedro killed it, I fkin loved the way it was shot, the score and everything
One of the first things you learn as an actor is the importance of authenticity and to not fall into ticks or stagey traps that copy or mimic someone else’s performance. Regardless of how much you think you will be able to separate yourself from what came before (like in theater for example) invariably you will accidentally copy what you’ve seen. Having your actors not play the game allows them to give genuine performances born out of the material and script as opposed to subconsciously imitating what came before. The key is having a showrunner that HAS played the game & writers that understand the material enough to illicit the best performances from the cast. It also helps to have the actual game creator on board instead of just taking an IP and shitting all over it because you think you know better than the thousands of creators & devs that birthed the game years prior. If you have any doubt that not playing the source material didn’t matter just look at the subtle differences in Pedro & Bellas performance in key moments like the end where she makes him swear he’s telling the truth. In the game it feels like Ellie wants desperately to believe him where in the show Bellas Ellie clearly doesn’t believe him as you see a hint of doubt creep over her face. That moment alone demonstrates why it’s good to not engage with the source material if they hadn’t already before shooting.
I loved in episode 8 when Joel yelled "WHAT TOWN!??" Then we he got his information, said "It's Joelin' time" and then Joeled all over David's townspeople
I think “not looking at the source material” worked because they didn’t lmao. Pascal tried the game and Ramsey watched UA-cam videos. I think it really shows, for the best.
Episode three i think is one of the best single episodes of television I’ve ever seen, the note bill wrote to Joel made me cry so hard. I agree that I wish that bill and Joel interacted a bit more, but they way they told that love story was absolutely beautiful.
@@hypocriticalgrammarnazi I respectfully disagree, it was a very interesting take on a love story, bill being hard headed and hating people in a way it was a story about someone finding their true purpose in life. For bill it was protecting frank and for frank it was helping bill to live an actual life. Which is pretty much summed up by the note he wrote Joel. It’s a story of two people in an absolutely horrible situation and not only making due but finding love and solitude from another person. It completely subverted my expectations of what I thought the episode would be.
They forgot about the bloaters/clickers that they introduced. Which makes Joel's decision to go on a wild rampage easier, I mean, why would he save humanity if there's not a single zombie for months!

My biggest complaint about the show is that they spent so much time setting up the infected in the first few episodes and even showing that if you kill one they all know where you are, but they literally never mention it again after episode 2.
Yes I thought that was foreshadowing for it going to happen in another episode and it never did. It was really interesting lore to add but they didn't do anything with it :/
Super valid; completely forgot about that mechanic, guess they only wanted it in one episode. Chekhov’s gun fired and tossed aside

Abby's VA played one of the nurses in the finale, I believe Tommy's VA played a character in a quarantine zone, and Marlene returned as Marlene!

@@ItsDanbo when it comes to stuff like that, i do think that they should add more scenes between joel and ellie to make his decision more climactic. the finale was definitely rushed i felt i was like “wait they are at the hospital already?” and i even checked the time and it said 15 minutes left
They literally went from,
“She’s being prepped for surgery” to “I don’t have time for this” to **Hospital shootout** to **saving Ellie** in like 5 minutes
they could've cut a LOT from other episodes instead of rushing the plot
When I saw 43 minute episode and they spent 15 on ellies mom I'm like yeah they're not even gonna take time to flesh out the doctor, and of course they didn't
Just like the game, they're magically going to make him important after the fact
I just love how you go inside Joel's head in the hospital scene, just music and Joel doing his stuff. It's such a good way to make us BE Joel
It also doesn't allow for any retcons of the hospital or fireflies for TLOU2. Which I think a more in-depth look at the hospital would do.
honestly they made that scene and ending even more tragic and touching.
If it was in his own head, why was the music so overbearing and sad?
@logan_Floor got raped by his dog
Literally part 2 is SO easy to fix. ALL you have to do is characterise abby BEFORE she goes golfing (humor hiding real pain) if we can see it from her point of view BEFORE what happens happens we wont just TOTALLY hate her.
Exactly. I was hoping they include Abby's flashbacks in the first season, or at the very least at the start of the second season. Give people a chance to sympathize with Abby instead of making them decide right there and then to hate her forever.
Doubt it, Abby is an unlikable person, but even if the show made her likable, her friends are not likable by any means.
You totally missed the point lmao
i’m pretty sure the main message of tlou2 is how perspective and bias warps your opinion on people. you’re supposed to hate abby when she kills joel because someone that played as joel inherently feels connected to him and thinks he doesn’t deserve what he got, which i think can also be true considering he did what he did to save someone he loves but at the end of the day he still murdered a whole fucking hospital. all abby cares about is that he killed her dad so she is justified in getting revenge but ofc the player doesn’t realize this until the flashbacks. then at that point you may understand that abby really isn’t a worse person than joel (or ellie in part 2). what i’m saying is this creative choice was made for a reason and to completely change that would do the exact opposite of “fix” part 2. the problem isn’t the game it’s people choosing not to use basic media literacy skills 🚶🏾♀️
A character being likeable is not what makes them a good or bad character lmao
The hospital scene itself was very well done, the pacing issue comes from the fact that the entire Salt Lake City section is 20 minutes, they could have easily made it 2 episodes, adapt the underground section so we get more infected, maybe another bloater since they spent half a million dollars on the suit to use it for 30 seconds but just more Joel, Ellie, and some infected time really makes the hospital scene hit that much harder
i agree with this. i loved how they did it. BUT i do think charlie is right about that they should have had a longer episode leading UP to that part.
@@Dinckelburg Addressed is certainly one way to put it
Pedro Pascal is not a golden Lion, but a Viper on stage.
He has the whole package as an actor. I love how he is able to play a deeply hurt, vulnerable and also extremely merciless man and at the same time a loving and caring one, which is insanely hard to do in a believable manner.
He is a red viper like his breakthrough character Oberyn Martell.
ahhh viper I see what you did there
I think one standout feature for me was that the episodes felt like actual EPISODES, as in they often felt like standalone stories.
I really feel like they did that well even with the sacrifice of less interaction.
i think frank should have died with the raiders and then they could have kept bill alive and followed the joel-bill relationship as seen in the game.
I wish we could've seen a flashback to what life was like for Joel and Tommy in the 20 year period between outbreak and boston. Hopefully they explore something like that for season two.
Knowing how the HBO series went with some of its storytelling liberties, it wouldn't be out of character to add a scene like that in the show.
To see them kill a bunch of innocent people? Cause that’s all it would be💀
@pidaho They don’t need to further display that. We watched him blow her dads brains out💀
I absolutely loved every minute of this show, there are some extremely talented people behind this project and I can’t wait for the next season.
@Don't Read My Profile Picture gtfo pls

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey nailed it. That is how you make a TV series after a game. Astonishing. Amazing.
Also the cameos for the game voice actors! Blew me away when I seen Ashley!
I would’ve enjoyed for there to be some push back from the soldiers. It really does feel video gamey if he just mows them down like in the show. They should have actually had a skirmish where Joel had to throw bricks and use his wits to fight them off
45 minutes of non stop combat would be pretty stupid.

They had to do it quick because that was realistic to the story, if he took an hour to kill them it might have been too late for him to save Ellie

I tried watching it with my family. They liked it, but I was just straight upset that it was so shit compared to the game, and it was annoying them so I had to drop out after ep 3 set the dumpster on fire

One of the best experiences i've had watching a show was seeing the live action version be so ridiculously faithful to the intro, gave me chills
I do love how visceral they made that last hospital scene, the game didn't make me question "is this okay" nearly as much. Like they really drove in that there is no good or bad in this world, it's just survival. Though I think there should have been one ep before to further cement him and ellie because he was out of it for 2 eps
I recommend watching 'the making of' episode. The extent they went in making EVERYTHING was just phenomenal. They spent a lot of money, and it shows.

Except they don't imply that at all infact they outright tell you the opposite "there's more every year" Tess
Except that hurts the whole needing the cure and wondering why humanity is struggling.
Also the new concept was just completely underused and only said they were trapped underground. It's funny you're confused on what even happened because the actual reason was that they just put them there somehow.

"Why did the scarecrow get an award? Because he was outstanding in his field" 10/10 show imo
The first season was fucking amazing. Really appreciated the team behind it and how it follows the story from the game.
Do you know what episode ran for nearly an hour and a half though? And did nothing for the plot?
@@SUBZER0GREEN I do agree that although it was a brilliant episode it ended up being a large tangent from the story. If they had cut the cancer plot and had Bill and Frank fall out, with Ellie and Joel meeting Bill afterwards and having it progress like the game from there, it would’ve been a lot cleaner.
Or perhaps your standards are quite low
@@lay6704 No, no, I can assure you, they are egregiously high.
@@ParzivalTheThird It was too late for Bill and Frank to have a falling out, because unlike in the game, they resolved that first argument we saw. In the game, that obviously festered, and led to resentment (read Frank's note again).
Wait i didn't even realize the last episode was the finale, it really didn't feel like a finale
When I saw that intro for the last episode I thought it would focus more on flashbacks for the fireflies to give more conext about the hospital cause that’s something we didn’t get much at all until the second game
Never played the games, just only seen a bunch of gameplay. But I love the relationship between Joel and Elle. And also the set designs were pretty cool.
same but i haven't actually seen gameplay of the first game just the 2nd one
i seen a lot of gameplay from the 2nd one when it came out and all the big youtubers played it
can't wait for the 2nd season and to see who gets to play Abby :D
Was nice to see the cameo Laura Bailey did there as one of the nurses
Tbh I was skeptical going into the last episode, kept checking the time left when the whole anna thing was going on and I had no idea how they'd do this in less than half an hour, and idk how they did it, but I can't think of a better way to show that whole fight sequence, it's not just a pew pew finale fight, it's just a descent, pedro killed it, I fkin loved the way it was shot, the score and everything
ill never get over how amazingly perfect the drive scene was in the first episode
More like Ellie Ellie’d over David’s people.
@@fulcrum6760 True. He mostly Joeled all over the Fireflies
Really? It’s a great episode, but it’s really nowhere near a masterpiece.
@@nickyu399 go watch more things episode 3 was such a generic story lol its not even close to a masterpiece
@@evilclown5 I’ve seen everything
@@nickyu399 better call Saul season 6 ep 7 is a masterpiece ep 3 of the last of us was kinda basic lmao
They forgot about the bloaters/clickers that they introduced. Which makes Joel's decision to go on a wild rampage easier, I mean, why would he save humanity if there's not a single zombie for months!
