people like to trash Michael Che for dead spots on weekend update but i think he should be used more in skits like this. He is good at deadpan and being the straight man, it worked very well for this skit.
Hes a writer... pretty good stand up. I personally have a high bar maybe for weekend update.. but top 2 is david spade and norm Macdonald.. akroyd was pretty good but spade and Macdonald just hit with such punch all the time their delivery just fit so well into that newscaster spoof character.. heads above the rest
Yeah he lets whoever else is on screen shine and have their moment but feeds them their lines perfectly. Very unselfish acting from a professional perspective
In comedy duos there is traditionally a "straight man" and a "comic." The straight man sets up the jokes and the comic tells the punchlines. The straight man is calm and the comic is excitable or flustered. The straight man is sane and the comic is kooky. Classic examples include Burns and Allen (George Burns is the straight man), Abbot and Costello (Bud Abbot is the straight man), and Martin and Lewis (Dean Martin is the straight man). There are of course variations. For example, sometimes the comic's weirdness will make the straight man lose his temper instead of being the calm one, for instance -- Laurel and Hardy liked that dynamic.
It is a bit annoying that no one can put brackets in a comment like "straight man (the comedic type, not the sexuality)". I've seen so much confusion because of this lol
The writing, the music, the concept, Vanessa, and Michael are so perfect!! "You're the ONLY ONE GOING?!" "It's six days till Halloween and-" "follow the cuecards in your heart" The best!!
I haven't been a regular watcher of SNL in a couple of decades, but thanks to UA-cam I've become a huge fan of Vanessa Bayer and her performance in this well-written skit is absolutely brilliant.
This was so funny, She touched on all the rom-coms cliches, while having a straight men that is probably how every guy feels when watching a rom-com What do you mean you are in love, you just met sixty seconds ago
I've been watching many Weekend Update clips lately, and I'm so impressed with Michael Che's ability to play the straight man. obviously the crazy guests are the comedic focal point, but the straight man is also essential for these sketches to work, and it's not any where as easy as it looks. The Cathy Anne sketches are particularly good.
omg anandela, i've always thought she'd fit in so well with the good neighbour guys. would love for them to have their own show where they can do funnier more subtle stuff than snl and take vanessa bayer with them
@Marie: Tina Fey is very overrated. All she did was Weekend Update and Sarah Palin. But Maya Rudolph and Rachel Dratch are quite talented. Amy is more talented than Tina but less than Maya or Rachel.
They're playing off the romantic comedy trope that the only weakness the girl has in a rom-com is that she's clumsy and overly-focused on her career, while the man has real weaknesses--like arrogance, non-commital, emotionally unavailable, etc.--that he has to overcome.
funniest update segment in a long time. I might have been to hasty about Michael Che. He was damn funny here, Vanessa Bayer often makes me laugh already.
I hate when people hate on the newer SNL cast. They're just as good as the old cast. You guys only focus on the 20 or so great skits performed by the old classic members, but if you go back and watch all the episodes all the way through, you'll see that not the whole show was ever as great as you say it was. There are bad skits and not-so-great cast members, but they are still good. Many of the old cast members were nobodies until they became popular through the show, Much like some of the SNL cast of the 2010's. Andy Samberg, Bill Hader, Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Fred Armisen, Kenan Thompson, Jason Sudeikis, Taran Killam are great veterans on the show and are not household names yet, but they each have a skit or impersonation that they are great at(you just need to get the joke). Also some newer faces like Bobby Moynihan, Cecily Strong, Kate Mckinnon, Jay Pharoah, Beck Bennet and Aidy Bryant are amazingly talented and will be possibly great one day. Even the newer guys look promising even though they haven't seen much screen time. So stop saying "The old days were the best" when you dont even give Snl a shot. Watch the show and try to understand the jokes and you'll start laughing again, especially with the great hosts they always have. The other cast members I've skipped over are the ones I don't find that consistently funny. The new loud black woman and Kyle Mooney especially drive me nuts, but Pete Davidson and the new Weekend Update hosts are awesome!
Vanessa Bayer, a comedy Hero!!! She's got it all as far as I'm concerned. Check out her "Sound Advice" pieces, somewhere on the web, I'm guessing. She's got all the range and her timing is perfect... Love her simile too!
Vanessa is one of the very few people to look good in any hair. No matter length, style or color, she always looks great, sometimes against the intentions (the Bar Mitzvah boy included!).
Daisy Rose because one kind of flower wasn’t romantic enough
hartstikkezo 😂😂😂
I made the 667th like
hartstikkezo I’m the 1,000th like 🤣
Violet Jasmine, Marigold Pansy, Poppy Lily...
LMAO
Whoever wrote this was a genius and she played the part well!
Yes Vanessa Bayer is indeed a genius.
I SEE YOUR COMMENTS ON EVERY SNL SKIT OMG
@@danny-lv6wm same!
She obviously wrote it.
Um, I'm pretty sure she wrote it...
Holy shit she NAILED that character hahaha
And him right afterwards
She nailed every romantic comedy ever in 3 minutes 37 seconds
Oh my goodness, Bayer's performance is great.
she never cracks omg
Rebecca ralue
KINDA!
She always has a great performance and never breaks character
Very much so
"You had me at absolutely!"
lmao Vanessa is so underrated
ImperialYak I
ImperialYak So are you, Colin
Yes, she is. But definitely not because of that lame line.
Vanessa Bayer is BRILLIANT !!
+3ringsAIKMAN she sure is, and of course being Jewish, or if I could say, a Jewess, she fits the part of Jacob the Bar Mitzvah Boy.
+ir10031981 she was so adorable in that skit!
+Shari JustShari i agree
ilya Kozlov
WHAT THE FUCK DUDE!
ilya Kozlov you'd better go check your eyes at the hospital

Matt Langevin I get Norm but spade??? He could play it but wasn’t that good
Yeah he lets whoever else is on screen shine and have their moment but feeds them their lines perfectly. Very unselfish acting from a professional perspective
People loved Norm's deadpan, dunno what they see different in Che. I honestly have him in my top 5
2:13 "Look...uh...I...I guess what I'm saying is, i... it's New York city, aa...and it's 6 days before halloween..." - The Rom-Com Motto
She needed to say its six days before Christmas and he needed to say "It's October"
"absolutely not"
"you had me at absolutely"
OMG! I cracked real hard.
Did Vanessa Bayer write this? It's really good. Good job by Michael Che playing the straight man role as well.
hes gay?
ilya Kozlov No he's not, straight man is a type of character/role, not the sexuality :)

Gregory Eatroff wow, never thought I’d ever learn anything just by reading the UA-cam’s comments section. Thank you for that, truly!
It is a bit annoying that no one can put brackets in a comment like "straight man (the comedic type, not the sexuality)". I've seen so much confusion because of this lol
Vanessa isn't getting enough credit
+Antigoni Gera Judging by all the glowing comments on this page, I think she's doing just fine.
+Tom Ripsin there's a lot of other message boards and corners of the internet where she isn't getting as much love as she deserves though.
I'm sorry to hear that. I think she's very talented & funny. I'm also kind of crushin' on her.
I am not being nasty here but just getting on SNL is "getting enough credit." I don't think someone needs more than that.
she's already got (more than) enough teeth.
Damn...this skit was brilliant.
''you had me at absolutely'' HAHAHAHA
Merel van 't Hof tnx
Vanessa’s smile is so damn infectious ... it just lights up every sketch she’s in 🥰
"We're finishing each other's sentences."
"...kinda."
😂😂
If I don't leave now, I'll miss my flight and you'll lose me forever...
"Well then you better go" 😂😂😂
For real tho lmao
That was perfectly timed
If she doesn't miss her flight, the same would probably happen.
When the music starts at 1:49 oh my god
She's such a top-notch performer
A come back is a must
This. Is. BRILLIANT
Still a better love story than Twilight
+Grai White It's not
+Grai White She didn't come up with it
It was Batgirl. (Duh!)
Just kidding. it wasn't Batgirl.
+Grai White same
Vanessa is probably the best actor here. she does so well and really sells her characters.
"... and if I don't leave now I'll miss my flight and you'll lose me forever"
"Well then you'd better go" 😆
0:53 that little dip she does to collect herself after saying "I'd better get into my talk." Adorbs.
Great spoof. Every Nicolas Sparks film ever.
She went through all 3 acts of every Hallmark movie in the span of 3 minutes
This was so funny, She touched on all the rom-coms cliches, while having a straight men that is probably how every guy feels when watching a rom-com
What do you mean you are in love, you just met sixty seconds ago
***** the ones that have seen her in that jewish boy sketch?
+4evrFireify She's too convincing as "Bar Mitzvah Boy."
Sebastian Sanchez What? Gone in 60 seconds?
I legitimately squealed when he complimented Vanessa HAHAHAHA I have it pretty bad
I've been watching many Weekend Update clips lately, and I'm so impressed with Michael Che's ability to play the straight man. obviously the crazy guests are the comedic focal point, but the straight man is also essential for these sketches to work, and it's not any where as easy as it looks. Vanessa Bayer is just as good as Kate McKinnon
she's too cute.
she's able to amplify the humor in more subtle things. She and kyle have a similar style.
omg anandela, i've always thought she'd fit in so well with the good neighbour guys. would love for them to have their own show where they can do funnier more subtle stuff than snl and take vanessa bayer with them
CatfishCameras nah dude. Kate is fucking insane, and this chicks funny and all, but McKinon goes fucking nuts every skit
Vanessa is great and all, but Kate Mckinnon has 1 more emmy then her.
She looks so cuddly
I couldn’t stop imagining almost EVERY Cameron Diaz movie
The music was everything and more 🤣
Vanessa Bayer, Cecily Strong, Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant = strongest female SNL cast since Molly Shannon, Cheri Oteri and Ana Gasteyer.
lindsey lefrois Add Kristen Wiig to that and I agree 100%!
Brittany G. Kristen wiig isn't that good. Her jokes are too drawn out and cheesy
lindsey lefrois Leslie Jones?
@TheMorningGamer: Yes, I forgot Leslie ... sincere apologies.
@Marie: Tina Fey is very overrated. All she did was Weekend Update and Sarah Palin. But Maya Rudolph and Rachel Dratch are quite talented. Amy is more talented than Tina but less than Maya or Rachel.
the anchor responses kill me xD
I lost it at "That is not why we brought you here" lmaoo
Romantic comedies broke that girl.
That was spot on. The content, the direction the skit went, HER! Good Job, Mama. You crushed that role.
It's been a long time since i ve seen an actress play someone so flirty and romantic, she was lovely, especially that giggle at :50.
Jimmy Figueras Dude, you ARE that character. 😂
she is gorgeous
beautiful eyes .....
Her mouth is huge though.
This is remarkable
Is it just me or is her toothy smile the most adorably sexy thing ever?
She’s adorable.....
Julia Roberts has the BEST smile ever.
Just you. Lol
I've been in love with those tootheys forever.
It's not just you!
Vanessa Bayer's overbite is super endearing somehow. Her smile is adorable 🤗
@@nicholasbyram296 😭😭😭DUDE WHY LMAOOOOO
You're certainly planning on taking her to some great places. What's your date budget? $30?
@@jimbailey5681 Go easy on him. He will probably let her super size her order.
@@nicholasbyram296 Nicholas, your point being???

Well, and she keeps saying/doing cliches from every rom-com ever.
Tal Moore Thank you for the in depth analysis!. I really needed that!.
Tal Moore You're kidding right?
Tal Moore oh really thanks lol I was so lost in this skit ha ha
Haha brilliant!
funniest update segment in a long time. I might have been to hasty about Michael Che. He was damn funny here, Vanessa Bayer often makes me laugh already.
Vanessa Bayer is actually amazing
Brilliance from Vanessa and nicely held together by Michael playing the straight guy.
I swear her smile is everything!!!!!
1:47 Michael's face as the romantic music starts
The music was PERFECT too!
Awwww!!! haha she's aazing
+axelle32 Vanessa Bayer is hilarious
Great skit. Her smile gleams like the chrome of a 49 Buick.
Clean, smart, and perfect timing, she just kills in these skits where the comedy is personalty driven. Che is a great straight man to.
She sounds like Ted Mosby
Bruh 😂😂😂
What do you say?!
iT's nEw yOrk cItYyy
this is underrated 😂
Holy cow 😮

I met you 70 seconds ago.. lol
at 40 seconds, there's already a blossom of romance. wow
People talk about McKinnon and Wiig, but Bayer is my favorite. This particular sketch was perfectly written and flawlessly executed
I am pretty sure it is impossible to smile more intense than Vanessa does.
I don't know how many times I've watched this and everytime I laugh like it's the first time
To be fair, i would probably be acting like that around Michael Che too xD lol jk
+Allison McClure Yeah he's a very attractive man
hollywoodshopaholic ikr
+Allison McClure but you're white
carmen martinez What does that have to do with it? Just because I'm white means that I can't like black guys? lol
i'm joking chill out
That smile👌
Ladies and gentlemen, the talented and beautiful Vanessa Bayer ....
Perfectly written and very well acted!
Vanessa, Bobby, Kenan and Taran are the current all stars of the cast
and let's not forget my fellow Illinois native Cecily.
+brohoelikeacholo guys, Kate!?
+brohoelikeacholo Kenan's been a star for a long time ...
Vanessa was so underrated , always in the shadow of Cecily and Kate , but Vanessa is so talented and hilarious !
She was so overshadowed and deserved much more credit , she is amazing and hilarious and never if rarely breaks character
OMG it is every romantic comedy cliche. Especially, the ‘Im a Klutz’ shtick❤️ the dialogue is spot on😂😂😂 even the music
"Well then, you better go!"
Her smile is everything!
Bring this woman back as a host for SNL. WE MISS VANESSA!!
vanessa's comedic timing/delivery in this bit is so incredible i keep coming back
what its like when your friends try to set you up.
is this a question?
+Marina Moni No, it is a comment. I'm saying that this is what it is like when your friends try to set you up with someone.
That's what I thought 😂
I keep coming back for Vanessa smile.
They should do that type of sketch with her again
Michael Che's very normal, quite masculine demeanor just makes all of these character skits so much funnier 😂😂 He's fantastic
Everything Vanessa does is GOLD!!!
TO be honest, if Vanessa Bayer was ever hitting on me, I would falling head over heels for her.
Same here
+Living Abstraction Agree. She's so sweet that I would take her home and spread her on my waffles.
my god same
Vanessa has a divinely sweet smile!
She is so freakin' adorable.
the 'and I think..' is gold.
Vanessa Bayer's such an amazing comedian
Shes cuteness overload squared. Im already in love with overbites and she is the queen.
she kinda looks like Overly Attached Girlfriend in this one
Vanessa is so sweet, her smile is so contagious too
every fucking cliche - splattered all over the canvas like a beautiful work of art, well done SNL
Vanessa Bayer, a comedy Hero!!! She's got it all as far as I'm concerned.
Check out her "Sound Advice" pieces, somewhere on the web, I'm guessing.
She's got all the range and her timing is perfect... Love her simile too!
her characters are so iconic, worthy of the snl hall of fame
Such a talented actor!!!!
The only time Che said no to a thirsty lady
Why aren’t we more focused on how genius Vanessa Bayer is!
Vanessa is one of the very few people to look good in any hair. No matter length, style or color, she always looks great, sometimes against the intentions (the Bar Mitzvah boy included!).
If u ignore her infectious smile, general hotness and comic timing...she's also a great actor ! Crushing hard.
😂😂😂😂😂 can't stop laughing!!! The music!!
Even though this is a send-up of romcom's I got to say she's cute as hell and she just captured my heart lol
These guys from SNL are THE BEST XD XD XD XD
I'm seriously in love with Vanessa Bayer.
Me too.
"This isn't as funny as..." "They should bring ...back to the show!" "...isn't funny."
Could you people find something nice to say for once? Sheesh.
Soulless, humorless people seeking attention. smh
I wish SNL would bring her back - take a chance on love!!
You're out of your mind dude. Daisy is a catch
👌👌 Couldn't imagine a better way to do a satire on romantic comedies than this! Awesome work!
