should I use distilled water or is tap water ok?

Great question! Here are the published recommendations from two authoritative sources regarding water used for saline nasal irrigation:
The US FDA advises using filtered, distilled, or previously boiled water for nasal irrigation.
The CDC provides detailed information about boiling, filtering, and disinfecting water for nasal irrigation at www.cdc.gov.
Most users prefer to warm their water prior to use. If you do this, do not overheat the water. It should be lukewarm to the touch and not hotter than about 85°- 90° F (29°- 32° C).

Great question! Understandably, there is currently a tremendous amount of interest and research into the relationship between saline nasal irrigation and the prevention and/or mitigation of the symptoms of COVID-19. The clinical trials in this regard have not yet been concluded, but there is evidence that cautious optimism is warranted.
According to the US FDA (see www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/rinsing-your-sinuses-neti-pots-safe), nasal irrigation can “help relieve nasal symptoms of sinus infections, allergies, colds and flu”, and that when compared to nasal sprays that produce a fine mist, “irrigation devices are better at flushing the nose and clearing out mucus, allergens and bacteria.”
