This video was SUPER helpful. My husband and I ended up purchasing the UPPAbaby Mesa carseat. From the sounds of this video it seems like the Mesa and the Pipa are both solid infant carseats, just all depends on your personal preference as a parent. One of the reasons we ended up going with the UPPAbaby Mesa carseat is because we felt that the stroller systems that the brand offers is more conducive to our lifestyle. We plan on having more children in the future and we liked that we wouldn't have to compromise undercarriage storage space once a second seat is added to the UPPAbaby Vista stroller unlike the Nuna Tavo travel system. In addition, we really liked that there were more color options available with the UPPAbaby brand. Again, that's not the main determining factor, but it was nice to be able to choose a color other than black or tan. Overall, great video and I highly recommend the Magic Beans Videos for full-on comparisons of high-end and low-end baby gear and travel systems. They also do demonstrations so that you can see how to correctly install a particular brands products.

You can get adapters for brands including but not limited to; Baby Jogger, Uppababy, Buggaboo, Stokke, Babyzen, Mamas and Papa etc. The Uppababy Mesa is more limited, you can use the Mesa with Uppababy stroller and there are rumors of Baby Jogger making adapters for the City Select.

I got the Mesa and I'll say I do not care for it at all. My daughter is 3 months old and I'm considering buying the pipa. The Mesa is so heavy, and narrow it's hard to get baby in and out I have to literally wiggle In between to reach her hands and pull her forward to be able to get a hand behind her then pull her out one shoulder first til I can get her forward enough to slide my other hand in to lift her all the way out. Needless to say once we get home naptime is over because there is no way to transfer her to her bassinet undisturbed! And it's just super hard all the way around 😕 the pipa looks sooo much more cushion-y and a bit wider. My baby is also very slender and long so I can't imagine getting a baby in and out of the Mesa that may be built more short and chunky😳 and lastly I feel like the Mesa puts her in an uncomfortable position as though it rounds her back and then it's such a steep incline from the bottom of the seat where her butt sits and then where her legs go it just feels so cramped and doesn't allow her to be in a natural position at all. And it was even worse once I removed the newborn insert cause it just gave more depth in the seat which in turn gave even more of a closed angle to her legs 😏
Thank you for a very thorough, professional detailed review.I purchased the Mesa car seat for my daughter in law together with the Uppababy vista stroller system. I was advised to take the Nuna Pipa but I prefered not to use an adapter. However, the baby is big( she was born 9.5 pounds). She weighs 12 pounds at 9 weeks. Each time we need to put her in the car seat it's a complete struggle. We practically need to "fight " with the car seat. The main issue is that it seems like there is not enoughbelt to maneuver with. I seriously consider changing to the Pipa but i am afraid the store will not reimburse me. Any advice?
Finance Project hey there! Have you adjusted the headrest and removed the infant insert? I see a lot of parents have these complaints and sometimes it’s a really easy fix! You want the straps to be at or right below baby’s shoulders so you’ll want to adjust the headrest up until it’s at the proper height for your granddaughter. Also make sure the harness straps are nice and loose before putting baby in, then buckle baby and tighten the straps appropriately (you don’t want to be able to pinch slack in the harness at baby’s shoulder). That should give baby some more room - the Mesa should last even a bigger baby close to a year before they outgrow it by height. Personally, while I do prefer the Pipa over the Mesa, I would not switch infant seats at this point unless the retailer does agree to refund you. If baby’s parents decide that the Mesa really isn’t working out, I would go ahead and upgrade to a convertible car seat because that’ll be usable for several years! They’re safe to use from birth so baby can switch at any time. I love the Britax Boulevard or, if it’s in the budget, the Nuna Rava is also very nice. You do lose the convenience of a click-and-go travel system with a convertible car seat but it will give mom and dad a chance to use that fancy Vista bassinet until baby is big enough for the stroller seat! :) Before you give up on the Mesa, see if you/baby’s parents can visit a CPST in person to get some customized help. This page has details: cert.safekids.org/get-car-seat-checked.
@@DatsFamily the Pipa provides a much better fit through the life of the seat- the Mesa causes chin to chest positioning for many newborns and then is outgrown quickly, either by torso height or just practicality (the interior of the seat can be squished for bigger babies). The Pipa provides an excellent newborn fit (regular Pipa is better than Lite versions in this area) and is also roomy and tall enough to last most babies a few months longer than the Mesa would. @@TheBabyCubby great thanks for the response as for the adapters for the nuna to fit the upperbaby can it be nuna adpaters or it has be upperbaby ones?
It's a great video. I think with uppababy Mesa, you can still install it without the base too. It uses the European style of installation just like pipa. There are those blue clips on the sides and back of the Mesa car seat for threading the harness around.
Hi Jerrica. That is true that all car seats are required to pass the same safety test but some do get higher scores, we just dont see them since they are not required to publish them. We always like to see car seats include more safety features like; steel frames, EPP foam and other energy absorbing technology to keep your child safer. You are correct that you want to make sure you can install your car seat properly otherwise it is not safe.
The Baby Cubby NHTSA does not certify any seat safer than others. I’m a CPST. They can only give ratings on easy use or easy install. But that’s it. They all have to pass the same crash test standards
The rigid latch is not long enough in all of the cars I have tried. This causes the base to tilt toward the latch. So the Pipa cannot recline to the correct position. The only options I have seen online are to roll up a towel or use a pool noodle to prop up the base. That would then not allow me to use the latch system. Leaving this base totally useless. Pipa's suggestion is to just use the seatbelt with the base. If that is the case I will buy any other car seat on the market. Long story short, if you don't have a totally flat bench seat the nuna pipa base might not work for you.
Hey Ashley, we're sorry your Pipa has been giving you a hard time with the LATCH system! Most car manufacturers try to have standard latches but it's true that it won't always be the right fit. There is a leveler on the Pipa, we have a video on it: ua-cam.com/video/ABpyH1sj9Zw/v-deo.html at 0:47 seconds It explains the level and how to use it. The reason Pipa recommends using a seat belt is that it is actually safer to use a seatbelt installation. And the reason LATCH is talked about so much is because it is supposed to give an easier (but still safe) install to parents who don't know how to properly install with a seat belt. If you're local to Utah we'd love to have you come in and our CPS Techs can help you with the installation, if not you are more than welcome to call our store at (801) 770-0584 and ask for help on installing and we can get a CPS tech on the phone to walk you through it! Thanks for the feedback :)
Correct. You can install the Mesa with a seat belt. You would thread it through the blue belt path indicators on the side. It just doesn't have the European belt route on the back, which makes install with a seat belt safer.
We haven't heard of many vehicles that don't work? Which vehicle do you have? Typically its just the seat that matters. Most middle seats have a hump and wont work, so in that case you would need to move the car seat to a side seat.
The Baby Cubby I have a Honda Odyssey and recently found out we can NOT use a load leg because it the middle row, the Odyssey has the spare tire storage compartment taking up almost the entire floor, there for it is not considered a solid floor. I was super disappointed considering the Honda Odyssey is such a family vehicle.
Most infant car seats a very user friendly. Here are a few videos on Uppababy ua-cam.com/video/M068sHRqEj4/v-deo.html (older version but same concept) ua-cam.com/video/qADFmwMiGcg/v-deo.html there isn't a Pipa video showing the buckles but its the same concept. Here is our Pipa how - to video where we show how easy it is to tighten the harness ua-cam.com/video/ABpyH1sj9Zw/v-deo.html at 3:42 They are both great options! Let us know if you still have specific questions.
@2:08 - "won't...because it's a bar". That's incorrect. It'll still twist, but to a lesser extent, due to the material used for the bar. Just because it's a 'bar' doesn't make it strong. (e.g. it could be a bar of soap...and not strong. i.e. it's in the material that's chosen by the product designers & engineers).
No. Every Nuna Pipa base should certainly have a load leg at the bottom of the base that pops out. I would contact Nuna and let them know immediately if that's not the case.
are you a CPST? If not you should get certified. All car seats have to pass the same safety standards per NHTSA. Rigid Latches and Flexible Latches are just as safe. Same as Seatbelt! You need to remind people that anchors have weight limits! Not all cars are compatible with load legs. There are so many important pieces missing from this video from a safety standard
Hi, you look like you know a bit. I am an European living in Africa. And in Europe you can find newborn carseat that can be attached with a seatbelt, but I cannot find a carseat like Cybex Sirona * from birth to 4 years* which can be attached with the seatbelt of cars. Unfortunately, in Africa car with Isofix is very rare. Do you have any suggestions?
Lazara Cassar you likely won’t find any American CPSTs who are familiar with European/international seats. The standards and the range of products available are very different from the US. If you’re on Facebook, I’d suggest joining a car seat safety group that has international CPSTs so they can make a safe recommendation for you. Try the groups “Car Seat Safety,” “Car Seats for the Littles” and “Car seat safety for the littles”
Leslie Beauregard We talked to one of our CPS techs and she said you should be able to find a configuration that works for proper installation. You may have to use the seat belt for installation and you may need to try it in different positions in the car. If you need specific help, fell free to call our store and ask to talk to a CPS tech. 801-770-0584.
You are so so much better than that white strip hair clown from magicbean. You give us more detail and informations what parents are looking for so we can make a better judgment.Keep up the good works !
That's nasty. That white strip is a genetic hair varient called a Mallen Streak. Not like he can change his genetics. I've seen women and men with that trait. If you prefer the Baby Cubby presentations, great, but no need to disparage someone's appearance. Geez. I think the Magic Beans guy does a great job as well.
My friend still has her one year old in his infant seat and I tried to tell her but she is crazy and doesn’t listen to me. Ok, fine risk your child’s life at your own risk
The weight of a car seat is not indicative of it's safety. You might consider taking a certification course to learn how the safety of the car seats work in a crash. I love that you want to educate parents but you need to learn basics. The lower anchors portion of the system does not have a tether. It is a portion of the latch system. The word tether should not be used in this instance. You can locate a course near you.
Hi Ella, Yes you can install the classic Nuna Pipa on an aircraft without the base, however you cannot install the Pipa Lite on an aircraft without the base.

Don’t wait any longer!!!!
i found my pipa car base has no load leg, is that right ??
No. Every Nuna Pipa base should certainly have a load leg at the bottom of the base that pops out. I would contact Nuna and let them know immediately if that's not the case.
thx for ur reply..i did some research we dont load leg cuz the stability legs don't pass the Canadian safety tests.
Oh good to know! We were unaware of the Canada safety laws since we only sell in the U.S
are you a CPST?
Does the Pipa work in a Range Rover Sport (2017)? I have seen reviews where it doesn't fit. Thank you.
The Baby Cubby thank you for the reply!
You are so so much better than that white strip hair clown from magicbean. You give us more detail and informations what parents are looking for so we can make a better judgment.Keep up the good works !
Thanks so much - we're happy to help!
Hannah Schaffer she should follow weight and height recommendations. age has nothing to do with it.
Thanks for sharing.
I'm sorry if 2 lbs makes something "heavy" as compared to another brand that is truly a first world problem...
too confusing
Hey we'd love to know what part or parts were confusing and we could clarify it for you.
hi can you use the nuna pipa without the base and is it aircraft approve? thanks
Hi Ella, Yes you can install the classic Nuna Pipa on an aircraft without the base, however you cannot install the Pipa Lite on an aircraft without the base.
