I would definitely buy pre-made silicon molds if you were willing to sell them. Think this could be a million dollar idea to sell these molds like at HOME DEPOT, LOWES, IKEA.

Watch it a few more times and you’ll see. 😉 DIY means “do it yourself.” In other words, you aren’t hiring anyone to do it for you. End of definition. It doesn’t mean cheap, it doesn’t mean easy, it doesn’t mean restricting your tool set. Too many people are trying to place limits on that term that simply aren’t a part of it. When I started making, I watched all levels of projects. I attempted the ones that were within my then level of ability and tools. As I wanted to do more advanced projects, I added to my tools, i worked to improve my abilities. If all the videos on UA-cam were “basic tools” easy builds, what would I aspire to? How would I grow? This video doesn’t make me want to run out and get a Shaper to make a patio-it makes me think of what limits I can push with my tools and abilities, now and in the future. Some of y’all need to go make some sawdust and stop your whining, after you finish the video.
They were all just Ideas of how he can double it or even profit from it maybe even sell the patent to major companys. Im a mom with a full time job some days I just wanna sit outside and enjoy my out door space I dont have the time to just open up my shed and "oh let me just spend hours making this" but I would like if he or lowes, Home Depot, Ikea would sell these id buy it if it cost upwards of +$250 a mold just cause I know ima get alot of use out of it. I wouldnt mind just opening up a bag of concrete and just letting it set and bam add on when I can. We get it its EXPENSIVE to make charge what you think fits. Or diy (if you have the time)
mmmmm missed this point tho........i have been laying what you call pavers (flags in uk) for over 40 years seen all types of designs. unfortunately i have seen many like this that are totally useless ! due to the fact they are extremely weak ! ok for a ornamental look, this is due to them not being pressure (weight) treated this removes all the air from them, no air no weak points . after a while if your in a very cold seasonal change area these WILL crack ! weak cheep mans short cut which will cost more in the long run !! unpressed concrete or un re-enforced is very weak !

I have everything except the $2500 router and supplies to do this, and they cost me about $300 for my cordless Ryobi drill, circular saw, reciprocating saw and router, all of which you can get from Amazon or Harbor Freight for half or LESS for shitty corded versions. People are just lazy and would rather bitch about how much time or money it would cost. Like the Karen who's SO busy she can't spend AN HOUR here or there to make a few molds when her Elmer's eating snot riddled ankle biters are napping or in school or eating mud.
And how the hell is this NOT a practical DIY for 99.9%? If you can't manage to do this, then you aren't a DIYer. If you bothered to listen to him, all you actually NEED to do it the supplies, a circular saw, reciprocating saw or even a damn hammer to vibrate out the bubbles, a finish router if don't want to do the round over by hand, a hot glue gun, and a screw gun. ALL of the tools would only cost you about $300 buying the cordless Ryobi One+ system he was using, and about half that or LESS if for the cheapest shitty Amazon or Harbor Freight corded versions of the tools you don't have, but if you don't even have a circular saw and drill, you can't even call yourself a DIYer. I fucking hate clueless assholes like you shitting on these guys in the comments sections just because they choose to use more expensive tools they have at their disposal already instead of entirely using basic hand tools. 10:1 says the only thing you've ever even "built" was with Legos.

Clicked on this out of vague curiosity and I'm trying to fix up my driveway. Wasn't expecting much ... then spent the next 18:11 mins completely fascinated! Great skills, great information, nice pace and he used fast video through the bits he didn't need to dwell on. I don't know that I'll ever do this, but I learned a lot.
These are very well designed and built pavers. I am very impressed. I am just wrapping up a DIY paver job in my back yard. I poured, so far, about 1000’ sq. ft. Along with about 90’ of 8” by 2’ high retaining wall, installed mainly to level my yard. Poured the wall around 6” PVC sleeves, of which the bottom 24” were poured in concrete prior to installing the retaining wall. These were used for fence post sleeves, backfilled with sand. It’s taken 3 years of after work and weekends. Turned out really nice but these pavers here almost make me want to replace it with these. 😂 Seriously though, great job!

Thanks for those ideas. I’ve been learning cement work from Odell Complete Concrete on UA-cam. I have a backyard project I which I’ll be making cement pavers out of 2”X4” pavers. The hexagonal pavers will be made out of 2X4’s also. Thanks a million for this. Reg.
In architecture school, we did a lot of concrete stuff. If you make a wood jig that is able to be disassembled and reassembled easily, you can do some of this type of stuff without the CNC and without the silicone. (i'm not meaning this as a criticism, btw, just as a tip for those wanting to do similar stuff as a starting point)
my first job was very similar. We made caste stone window surrounds, sills, arches, keystones, fireplace, caps, quoins, and address plaques. we had a vibrating table, that helped a lot.

This is awesome! I have a path I need paved, will seriously consider this route. The pavers look far better than the concrete pavers you buy from home centre and you can make then however you want!
This is one of my favorite projects you’ve done. Have you considered a brush on silicon mold with a fiberglass shell? This allows you to have a thin layer of silicon to capture the detail and the fiberglass adds the rigidity.
I have considered it and am looking at some other options from smooth on (not a sponsor) In general I don't enjoy working with fiberglass but its a great and efficient combination.
Very nice! $36 per yard isn't so bad for what you're getting. They would make a very nice matching driveway, perhaps with gravel fill for center sections where vehicle drips will occur.

Very very cool design. I’ve been waiting weeks for the concrete vibrating top ever since I heard about it on the podcast. I’ve been making hexagon pavers for an outdoor space at my house.
Smooth-On usually recommend urethane for concrete molds. It costs about 35% less than the Mold Star. Not quite as flexible, so maybe not great for the planter sections with the undercuts, but should be great for pavers.
This is a Genius video and Im super appreciative. You do not need a router though. Or the Silicone. Just place screws in form ply that you back out when dis assmebling. As long as you assemble the forms in a good way youll be able to re use them repeatedly.

Is there a way to have various heights on the shapes? I'm thinking of something like a basalt columns formations that could be use for stair, seating, or as borders ... maybe even a garden fencing.
yeah I used to think that but some of the biggest and most complicated projects I post get built the most. I think it is because its so expensive to commission custom designs like this.
@@HomeMadeModern Don't get me wrong. This would be cool as hell to do, but for me, personally, it's cost-prohibitive, even compared with the end result. There's no break-even for the average person.
Mr. Nova what do you mean by no break even for diy. have you priced pavers at lowes or home depot? most of them are more expensive than $4 per sq ft. and thats for the basic patterns. With this you can get a $10-20 per sq ft patio for much less. And many areas of the country concrete tools and skills are very reusable for future projects, so the tools have good return on investment.
Dude, this is my favorite project of yours to date. I've been pricing high end industrial vibration machines (used for things like conveyor belt sorting) but this has me convinced I can repurpose my old sawsall instead. Is it sawsall or recipricating saw? LOL.

Did something similar with plastic moulds from Amazon. Had 3 moulds and poured everyday like you. Very cheap and it doesnt take long to make a lot.

You could make hard multisection moulds out of gel coat and glass fibre which are bolted together

What you've created is a scalable design, similar to fractals. You can assemble larger structures from a few basic small structures or pieces. Nice.

Plaster is used quite often as a support backing for silicone molds especially for molds that are very abstract in shape

A suggestion for cheap cnc is the MPCNC project. Look it up.

My makerspace has two CNC routers. An x carve and a MASLOW and they are frequently used for projects. A makerspace membership helps anyones projects.
I get my molding material from Smooth-on also and I still have molds that I made that have lasted for about 20 years and still holding up
Is there a way to have various heights on the shapes?
I'm thinking of something like a basalt columns formations that could be use for stair, seating, or as borders ... maybe even a garden fencing.

yeah I used to think that but some of the biggest and most complicated projects I post get built the most. I think it is because its so expensive to commission custom designs like this.
@@HomeMadeModern Don't get me wrong. This would be cool as hell to do, but for me, personally, it's cost-prohibitive, even compared with the end result. There's no break-even for the average person.
Mr. Nova what do you mean by no break even for diy. have you priced pavers at lowes or home depot? most of them are more expensive than $4 per sq ft. and thats for the basic patterns. With this you can get a $10-20 per sq ft patio for much less. And many areas of the country concrete tools and skills are very reusable for future projects, so the tools have good return on investment.
Dude, this is my favorite project of yours to date. I've been pricing high end industrial vibration machines (used for things like conveyor belt sorting) but this has me convinced I can repurpose my old sawsall instead. Is it sawsall or recipricating saw? LOL.

Very nice! I was looking for the cheapest way to render penrose tiling... I think I can adapt your technique! I think I'll just render my positive with clay by hand.. but same concept.
