I honestly think that having the stack blower your hair back and Alex VanHalen locking down the beat would help immensely. Yes, Edward was a gift, but just saying, as I thump along at low volume
Agree. Plus, a lot of Ed's stuff was tuned 1/4 step down, which isn't useful for anything else. I have trouble recognizing the notes with alternate tunings. It throws me off.
Love that song, played it for a couple of my young friends who don't like anything but their music, and they loved it. I honestly don't see how you couldn't do anything but love that song. Eddie will never die, all those awesome licks will keep him living forever. Awesome video brutha, think I'm gonna knock off work early and go home and get started on this one, shouldn't take too long to get it down thanks to this KICK ASS tutorial. KEEP'EM COME'N 🤘😎🤘
Marty, I love your honesty and transparency and how you describe you’re trying your best to interpret and play what you hear. Everybody hears it and plays it slightly different and we’re all enjoying your lessons (and the handwritten notes)!
I'm glad he pointed out the incredible swing Eddie had in his playing. It's one of the biggest aspects of his highly underappreciated rhythm playing that gets missed buy most players.
Man thank you all these lessons they have been a game changer for me,your generosity is unmatched. I wish I could have caught when you came to Huntsville but I didn’t see the post until the day of , would have loved to met you 🤟🏻
"Ah yeah Beautiful Girls!" Marty this is really great, man. I enjoy your interpretations and that backline behind that you have there is pretty nice, dude. Keep up the really good work, :) And..I just hit the like and subscribe after this vid.
Thanks so much man, I appreciate the kind words and that you liked the video. I try my best to help everyone out, and it's a lot of fun. Thanks again man. 😎🍺
Great lesson (and playing). I request you teach these in the original tuning the song was recorded in, so we can play along with the album (after your lesson). Thanks for posting!
Thanks man!! I appreciate it. I used to then people wanted them on standard because they hated tuning down lol. I guess I'll go 50/50 every other one. 😂 I had to tune to standard to record this haha. 🤷
@Rico__B hey Rico I request that you be thankful and thank him for another great lesson and his dedicated time, not to mention the time he spent editing this lesson. It just amazes me how such little petty issues are worthy of mention. Be grateful, I guess next you’re going to complain about on screen hand written tabs and chord charts. I think next he should worry about using a variac?
Good lesson Marty, I enjoyed it man. That's a wicked, cool beanie cap man. I've seen them around, gotta get one... 🎸 I like learning these chord variations. Makes it exciting to steal them and use them while gigging especially. Can't get enough of learning more and more.
Thanks for this awesome lesson Marty ...I ended up with a big smile on my face and a ton of information . All the best for your great channel , greetings from Flanders !
Even tho I’ve been playing guitar for over 25yrs and love VH, I never learned any of his stuff. It’s always felt a little intimidating tbh. But once you watch someone break it down and start getting a feel for his style, a lot of the song structures and guitar arrangement are really simple. Not to be confused with stupid. He’s rhythm stuff is right up there with Hendrix. They both came up with really clever ways of combining rhythm and melody to outline the chords, and tie the progression together. I appreciate you teaching it in E. Love it in Eb, and it should be performed that way, but while you’re just learning it I think it might deter ppl having to drop down. A lot of times you’re working on multiple things at once. It’s a drag to tune down for the one song. You can do that later once you’ve got it under your fingers. Good shit man. Thanks
You're welcome man! It's true EVH is intimidating to learn because he just had a feel that made what he was playing sound so different. It was the feel and approach more than the actual notes. The more I e studied it, it's so obvious how many Page, Clapton and Bill Gibbons licks he was inspired. He just had his own style and was the coolest guy ever in guitar. 😎🎸🎵
Don't be intimidated. You'll notice that Ed used a lot of the same note shapes, and techniques throughout his music. One you get into it it gets easier, and things aren't as complicated as they seem. It's just challenging enough to make practice meaningful. Once you learn one of his song's, you can work on the nuances. It's kind of fun.
The great guitar parts come from a great writer with a great imagination. Thanks for sharing. Would like to do this with my band but the vocal harmonies is intimidating :)
Good lesson, Eddie was so good at filling in every little empty space of a song. When you hear the songs on the albums it's hard to believe it's only one guitar making all that sound
Thanks for the lesson! I don't use the thumb awkwardly trying to reach over on the 2nd fret on that intro , the index/first finger can fret it easier in my opinion. Just another option and my .02
"Horn parts on the guitar!" I love it. And the reference to Swing--very accurate but it is almost never described in those terms. Forgive my peculiar enthusiasm; I played trombone in high school and my Mom liked Jazz. My brothers and I, despite all other influences, love Van Halen. Anyway, good video.
Thanks Marty, great lesson! The Hal Leonard VH book has the tab of the correct notes but your lesson demonstrates the correct position for those notes. Saved me hours of noodling for sure!! I’m no pro but wonder, did they even have the ability to “punch in” back in the 70’s? I would assume Edward played it in a take just like its heard!🤘🏻Cheers!
Awesome lesson - one of the best unsung VH tunes. Are you able to take on Can’t Wait To Feel Your Love Tonight? I had those songs on repeat in the early ‘80’s when I first started learning guitar. And I always viewed those tunes as sister songs to one another and go hand-in-hand
Same temperature here in Alberta which is around -14 in Celsius. For us that’s actually nice since the last couple weeks we were near -40 Celsius. Either way a great tune and will have some fun learning.
Another great lesson, thanks! Quick question for you or your viewers. I have a Helix and Fractal. If I want to run them both into one set of studio monitors would an amp switcher or mixer work best. I like using tones from both so it be nice to switch interfaces when I feel like it. Thanks! BTW, 6 degrees in MN is shorts weather for us 😂.
How do you get and record your guitar sound? I'm watching this in, what is the beginnings of, my studio through my great sounding KRK 7in studio monitor speakers and it sounds awesome. Just looking for some recording pointers from my favorite UA-camrs. Your ton is pretty close to perfect the way I'm hearing it. Thanks.
Thank you! I record direct into pro tools with my Fractal Ax8 in stereo. I use a Friedman BE sim with Friedman IR's. I add delay and reverb in the mix through pro tools just for more control.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker Thank you very much. While I don't see myself as old, I'm 58 and am just now starting to learn how to do this stuff. Although much of the amazing tech we have as musicians didn't exist even five years ago. I appreciate your willingness to share.

Who knows man. It's just odd. He was always right between E and E flat. When they went with Sammy I remember Eddie saying in an interview review that he was as happy he didn't have to tune down anymore cause Sammy could sign anything. So maybe all along it was nothing more than to help Roth and his baritone range ?? 🤷
Thanks Marty! It's freezing down here at the beach too! That VH swing is what everyone should strive for. It's what really set them apart from the (obviously talented) but somehow bland sounding "classical-done-loud electric" bunch.

I kind of got used to his shuffle rhythm. Once you get it in your head it becomes natural. It works for other music as well. It spices things up.
