    Hi! I'm a public health student/researcher - and your experience with no information about opioids is shockingly common. Tapering is so important with opioids (and I say this as both a patient - I also have a chronic disease - and a public health professional)! And so often, patients are given a prescription and NO additional information. It's a huge problem and something that we're continually trying to combat/address. Withdrawl is totally real, and when you're also healing from surgery, going through withdrawl does not make the healing process any faster or easier.

    Your vlogs are absolutely my favourite. Even though you're having a rough time, you don't let it take over. It really helps to watch vlogs like this and remind myself not to let my illness drag me down. Big thumbs up are usual :) So glad you got to go home! P.S. Editing my comment to add that I LOVE your top in the last clip!

    With an opiate it is best to TAPER down little bit by little bit so that is is easy on your body, im upset that your doctor didnt explain this was the best way for you to not suffer!

    This vlog really touched me Christina. I had a good friend in high school who was a heroin addict. Even now, when I work in the healthcare field, I never really understood the profound effect opiates had had on him. Like many others, I kind of resented him for his addiction even though I knew it was never something he wanted to happen. Today I called him and told him how proud I was of him for kicking the addiction, and how much I respected his strength for doing so. Thank you for giving me that perspective.

    Treating pain is so complicated in EDS. I learned very early on in my journey that the type of pain you are having and identifying is very important. There is nerve pain, nocioceptive pain (pain from injury), and then the other pain (muscle spasms and bone pain in particular). Identifying the primary source of pain changes treatment. For me I have a combination of nocioceptive pain and dystonia. I dislocate 150 + times a day and have chronically dislocated joints. So I am constantly in a state of injury, I tried NSAIDs and anti inflammatory, nerve medications, etc before going to opioids. But for me methadone has been the best option for managing my pain. I take 3-5 mls 2x a day of methadone and I have never had to increase it in the 5 years I have been on it. I take muscles relaxers and Benadryl for my muscle spasms and between the three Meds it has everything under control for the most part. I am lucky I have a great doctor and doctors who understand my need for opioid pain medication and that being off of methadone is just not an option with how severely effected my joints are.
    It is not ideal for me to be on opioids long term but I have no other options. I have been on opioids since I was 14 and here I am at 20 and I am still on opioids and always will. It is also important for me to say that my doctors estimate that will I live for another 10-15 years with how bad my health is (particularly GI wise) and having vEDS. I also am sensitive to medications and I don’t tend to have to taper up because I develop tolerance. I do not have any addictive tendencies or traits that put me at high risk for addictions. I am closely monitored by a pain clinic monthly and get drug tested monthly.
    Lastly there is absolutely nothing wrong with taking opioids as long as you are taking them as prescribed and following the advice of your doctors and pain clinic. Chronic pain patients (who genuinely need it) need opioids too.

      Madison so sorry you go through this! Hope you get better and doctors find a way to help you other than opiods

    • @sayurimei
      @sayurimei 6 років тому +4

      Madison I understand you, in my case im allergic to all NSAIDS so opiods where my only course of treatment. And like you said, identifying the kind of pain is key to know how to treat it. For me, big crisis are dealt with oxicodone (percocet) with only one pill of 20mg a day and Im ok. Then on bad pain days I take long release tramadol 100mg and that has help me a lot.
      People sometimes judge me because I take tramadol (and not even everyday) but they forget that I don't have a choice, if I take an NSAIDS I will literally die from anaphylaxis and the people judging me are fellow health professionals (im a registered dietician and nutritionist), so it breaks my heart if this is the way they treat someone they know who has done the research how are they treating their patients (one of the many reasons I had to switch Drs a couple of times).

      Treating pain for anyone with chronic illness is complicated. I’m missing 90% of my stomach and 60% of my intestines and bc of that I cannot have NSAIDS. I’m also allergic to morphine and dilaudid along with a few other meds. The whole lyrica and gabapentin trial failed on me so I now have a pump inside that has a form of fentanyl and bupivicaine in it so I can function. Each person is different for sure! My pain dr is adding in baclofen since my zanaflex isn’t absorbing like it should. Prayers for everyone in pain!

    I think it’s horrifying that no one told you to taper off of it and you could have potentially taken it as prescribed and finished them meds and then been really sick because you didn’t know to taper... this is what causes people to go to the streets for meds or similar meds...

    I just noticed that about your front bottom teeth, I wasn't sure if it was always like that and I had just never noticed it before though. I'm sorry you're embarrassed to show it but it really doesn't look bad imo, although it is crazy to think about how that happened from your jaw getting even more messed up from surgery! It's so unfair you have to deal with one problem after another after another..

    Heres the thing though, going through chronic pain is not good for you or your body. While there are side effects from pain pills, pain causes significant issues.

    • @Tilllerlindemann
      @Tilllerlindemann 6 років тому +1

      Eugenio pain is a sensation. Chronic Pain does not always mean it is harming your body. Pills 100% will harm your body.

    • @raincoathaveli
      @raincoathaveli 6 років тому +6

      GLITT EROUS actually yes chronic pain is always harming you because it makes your cognitive function lower, it effects your mood, it effects your ability to do things, and it can, and often does, effect your cardiovascular system. All medication has side effects. I am not saying everyone needs to take pain meds, I am saying that it is not up to anyone to decide what is best for them and their bodies except for the individual.

    So glad to see you! I look forward to your vlogs because with all that you go through you always smile. I cannot imagine what it feels like to dislocate joints to the degree that you do but you still smile and keep going. I have chronic pain due to the usual chronic illnesses that cause it but I also have a rare condition here in the US that makes my red blood cells larger and misshapen making blood flow painful. It also tries to kill off my neurological function. I still keep going though. My three kids have special needs, the youngest having one that I didn’t know was possible, but they think that if you can keep going then so can they. My youngest cannot process vitamin A so it builds up in her system and if she has too much she will turn orange. It also causes her bones to soften. My husband calls her his Oompa Loompa! Still saying a prayer for you. God bless!

    I’m so glad your friend is doing better! And happy for you to be home! Actually, your stress shopping seems like a good idea in moderation-having something to look forward to is so important when you are trying to get through a rough time. Stay strong with the pain meds withdrawal. It’s frustrating and miserable but it is temporary. I set a count UP timer on my phone so I could see each hour and day I survived was one step closer to being over withdrawal. I was on my drug for 2 years so it took a long time to recover. I still have my count going-it’s been 365 days and 19 hours since I stopped taking it. I think I’m pretty recovered now! I could probably turn off my counter but it reminds me to never let a doctor get me hooked on a med like that again.

    I was on pain meds since I was like 12 I didn't know anything about them and became dependent I was on them almost 10 years (21 now woo!) I had actually been in hospice for a bit and then I was dropped due to medicinal marijuana but that ended up being one of the best things to happen I've been off of all narcotics and pain medications for over a month now thank god, I had to withdraw in the hospital for 3 weeks the withdraw made me code twice it's crazy what it can do to your body and mind. I've felt so much better since getting off and I would never go back, as a fellow edser you are such an inspiration to me and you managing without them most of the time helped encourage me during the withdrawing process 💖

    So Glad you're home! Good to see Lauren! Hope you are both doing well and that you'll get some PT(I am going to call either today or tomorrow to start my 13 weeks of back and core PT. =/ ) , but it'll be good for me. I am gonna go once a week in the beginning and then see how much I can tolerate. I also broke my shoulder and tore a tendon in my thumb! On my right arm _I am right handed too, so sorry for typos ! i was so excited yo go go buy yarn for crocheting (Go, Alexa! Great Job for just learning! Seriously!) but I want to make some blankets. Do you use a pattern for your squares cause I only know how to make the zig zag like chevron patterned ones. Maybe i will just google some granny squares and see if any are easy enough once my thumb and shoulder feel better. I will be praying for you! i stress shop too. =/ It's bad. But i put stuff in a wishlist when i stress shop and don't buy it until I am a bit less stressed so I save money on things I don't need! I used to just buy it but now i have this habit of buying stuff for me and giving it away to other people. Haha not a bad thing but i guess giving gifts makes me so happy. Anyway excited for new jewelry! Yay. Good luck w/out glasses! i couldnt do that. You're hardcore 😎💪👊 and you have got this next surgery! I'll be praying for y'all!

    I would definitely watch a stress shopping haul! as for the morphine, same thing happened to me last weekend. I'm in a depressive episode so that combined with brain fog means i forgot to order my prescription, and i spent 4 days cold turkey spending my time in bed, going in and out of sleep, and running to the toilet a bunch, it honestly felt like i was dying. so i totally sympathise and wish you luck with your tapering schedule! mine is a bit more long term because i've been taking opioids for 2-3 years straight now... i had a pain management appointment recently and learnt some really cool stuff - endorphins, which are the "happy hormones" that you release during exercise and happy times, are actually our body's homemade morphine, it's where the "orphin" part of the word comes from! so i have an exercise plan starting at 5 mins a day to build up my muscles and to make my own morphine so hopefully i can taper off my pills! also, i have a strict rule from the doctor, which is that if i do an activity and it takes me more than 1 hour to recover from, i've gone too far. so if 5 minutes of exercise takes me 90 minutes to recover from, i reduce the amount until the recovery is 1 hour, then i can start increasing it by 10% a week - the caveat being that if i increase the amount and then my recovery exceeds an hour, i've got to go down to my last increment. this is probably super boring for a lot of people but i've been in treatment for 2+ years now and this is the first time i've heard any of this, that appointment made me a lot more hopeful about my future with eds.

    Girl I'm so sorry that you went through that all. I myself suffer from chronic pain as well and have been on pain medication for years on and off. I quit cold turkey once and it almost killed me. And then got put back on them. And what I think your doc was trying to say is "the body becomes dependant on the medication. And it also can make your brain think that the pain is worse when it isn't because the brain has been conditioned with these meds and even fed and satisfied. So for me I have chronic pelvic pain and had dental surgery and both my mouth and pelvis had pain when nothing was touched near my pelvis." But feel better girl ❤️

    You just made my day. I don't have eds but I have really bad eyesight and I feel like it gets worse all the time. I have been wearing glasses since i was 6 months. Went to my eye Dr and also a retina specialist and I feel like it's the same story, there's nothing they can do. My prescription is as high as it would go (off the charts) and they don't understand why I'm still having issues. Just to get a different option on my eyes would help a lot. Thank you ❤

    I truly admire you and what you tried to do with the morphine. I really think the doctors should have weaned you off in the hospital not outpatient. They could have kept you longer to come off safely. Also, it would been appropriate for you to do a medical taper and other medicine to replace it while you were in the hospita.. I was on oxycontin and roxycodone and it made me violently ill coming off. It can be done though. I only take tylenol now.

    This is barely related, but even when i've had to change antidepressants, i go through intense withdrawals where i get so nauseous i can't even move without almost puking. Withdrawal from any medication sucks, but pain meds are definitely the hardest. I honestly don't know how you went off morphine cold turkey, my hardcore withdrawals happen even when i'm weaned off meds!
    Also please do a haul! I need new places to stress shop (i don't quite do it to the extent you do though 😂)

    Have you ever read To Kill a Mockingbird? Spoiler alert. The mean old lady neighbor we find ou t at the end of the book has been going through morphine withdrawals. I have never forgotten that part since I read it so many decades ago. Also thank you Christina for your vlogs. My daughter is just 2 months older than you and recently diagnosed with EDS. She is just beginning her journey. So many prayers for you and your family

    I use Nikken magnet products, the braces, pieces, mattress and have used the ceramic blankets. it has helped with pain and healing especially with pots and those transient attacks I get. If you use them you have to go slow as extreme changes can feel weird even if it is positive. I also use Tommie Copper bands around joints, I love how much better it feels, not sure what it does but both my Mom and I have found we can move the joint around better. Hope something from our sharings helps someone. I love your creativity. You are really luck to have good doctors, you can Coconut oil pull, don't worry about crooked just worry about proper nutrition as best you can and use natural things, many have looked into food grade peroxide but you have to know how to use it, oil pulling can be done daily or even several times a day, also cinnamon, garlic and clove with the oil will keep bacteria away, see Dr Axe's videos on it. I use it and it has save my eroded teeth and I found a holistic dentist. Hang in there. You look nice in black with the green scarf. That cup purse is adorable,prayer and blessings.

    We watched the roots of my teeth shrink\die on the Xrays over a period of 10 years before I finally had to have nearly half of them removed this past summer. It's not been a fun process I hope your dentist can help you keep your teeth as long as possible.

    Morphine is very addictive for the body and should normally be weaned off rather than just dropping it. Its ok for breakthrough pain. I totally understand your decision that right I'm going to stop it right now, I have been through this with Morphine, Oxynorm, Oxycontin, and diazepam. try acupuncture it is amazing for any pain condition. I am totally with you on the no instructions on how to come off the meds after a surgery. I live in New Zealand and I have been through all the pain meds I was on fentanyl patches and then moved on to Methadone for my chronic pain. I have central sensitisation disorder, Endometriosis, Polycystic ovarian syndrome, costochondritis, and migraines. So chronic pain at all levels. I slipped on ice and prolapsed L4/L5 & L5/S1. I was left for two years before surgery and it was pressing on my spinal cord so that is why I now suffer all this chronic pain.

    My body doesn’t process pain medication due to a weird complication of my EDS so when I have surgery I can’t have any pain meds at home so the pain is insane and I’m barely functional I totally understand the pain and not getting out of bed

    As I sit in bed with my night guard in my mouth, trying to keep my neck brace from completely dislocating my jaw, I understand how important it is to see a good TMJ specialist. I just wish I had one right now😞 I'm also VERY thankful y'all got home before those nasty noreasters hit😨 I've been pretty worried😓 I DO have a question, even tho you may not know the answer.... Do you know if it's possible to have gastroparesis without having vomiting as a symptom?

    I realize you're further down the road on your recovery, but I had a thought for possible future procedures. IF you need to be intubated again, what about wearing a bite guard (like for sports) just during intubation/exubation. I know they don't want foreign objects in your mouth at all, but under the circumstances, maybe they could make a temporary exception. Because the alternative (possible lost teeth, more surgeries as a result, etc.) is not acceptable. You've been through so much as it is. If it were me, I'd be pleading with my surgeon and anesthesiologist.

    Hello Chistina! I have a strange request. I have been wanting to share your videos with my mom, who is deaf. Your videos are very accurately captioned, but there are still enough words and phrases being jumbled to make it difficult for her to to follow. You produce so much great content that I know captioning all of your videos would be a long and potentially difficult task, so I wanted to offer to do it for you. Personally, I am not familiar with the logistics of captioning UA-cam videos, but I'd love to help out in any way possible, if that is something you're interested in. Just an offer! I have learned so much about EDS through your videos and on my bad days they help me remember I'm not alone. Thank you for all you share with us.

      +Lauren Walker That is an amazingly kind offer! You have no idea how awesome that would be! I know I often rely on captions myself, so I feel terribly for not taking the time. I do try to speak clearly, but I speak about a lot of medical things so I can only imagine what it comes up with for those lol. Ill google it and see how to add captions as a viewer. I know so little about UA-cam myself! ❤️

    Orthodontics were horrible for me because my teeth moved so quickly and my gums swelled up for a few days and then it was 4 weeks til the next adjustment.
    They didn’t end up in a position that the top and bottom lined up well when they came off, so every time I took off a retainer my teeth would move to a new place to mesh better and my gums would bleed a little. I can feel them move around when I press on them too.
    I’m pretty sure eds gums just don’t have enough structure to support teeth where they’re supposed to be when they get pushed on.

      +13meli55a I had a similar experience with my first round of braces! Of course we didn’t know I had EDS then. Lots of pain and swelling and things moved back very quickly. I had to get mine off a bit prematurely due to needing them off for brain imaging. Then I had surgery, and in the short time I spent in the hospital my teeth had shifted so much the retainers didn’t fit.
