Im glad so many other people share the same sentiment about Afghan Whigs and Greg Dulli as I do. Probably the most influentialy time stamped artist of my life. Makes me want to drink whiskey, smoke reds, and relish in the fact that Im deperatley lonely and heartbroken because Greg DUlli makes that seem so glamorous.
It's been what now........twenty years, since this album came out?(yup, twenty). And to this day, it remains in my top 5 favorite records. "Faded" is my favorite song on it. I've been a musician for going on 43 years now, and I listen to just about every type of music there is....(even "some"(country)stuff) it hurts to say that!. Yet the pure emotion and passion Greg D. puts into this song, for me, is overpowering ! It's hard to say that it's my number one favorite song, because it varies over time but, it probably IS my altime favorite ! The band formed just north of Cincinnati, in a little college town. I was even offered the chance to play for them, but I had (and still do) a Drum shop to keep going. The fact that the "Wigs" are still going strong today is proof that Mr. Dulli is a force to be reckoned with. Tanx for lettin' me ramble......C-Ya ! !
damn they play so tight. the drums are on the right beat so they are playing at the right tempo. usually live drummers play a way quicker tempo live and the songs don't get a chance to breathe how they do on records. dulli's vocals polished and this is without all the effects used by singers today. just epic.
Must have been Osterrock-Nacht back in 1996. I was only 16 years old, saw them, listened to them and was stunned, amazed. To see this 15 years later sends shivers down my spine. What a great band!
John Curley is the fucking man. Quite, powerful, and a hell of a nice guy. I had a brief, normal conversation with him back in 1998 or '99 at Toad's Place in New Haven. Just a great dude.
I always put on Gentleman after a break up. I think their first 3 albums were the best. Up In It, Congregation and Gentleman. Those first tours were all great too. I remember seeing them right before Congregation came out at CBGS in NY. Amazing night. Dulli was very funny, picking fights with people in the audience who were getting pissed because he was talking too much between songs, singing random Pink Flloyd songs the band didn't even know.
Well said binaryfuneral. It took me forever to get into Dulli because I thought, "Eh that's not pleasant." I am a HUGE Mark Lanegan fan and since they are friends/collaborators, over the years its become clear I've missed out on some great art by ignoring Dulli alltogether. This might be a guess but intoxication or lack thereof might have SOMETHING to do with it because I have heard him sound pretty darn good lately. He has so much heart to share.
I don’t think Happy is on this Euro tour. Doug Falsetti is for sure doin the backing Vox on this. It doesn’t look like him on keys at all. Hard to say with that hat on.

What a song to cap off a stellar album. Black Love has got to be one of the most amazing but underrated albums of the 90s.
I've watched this 3 times this evening, great live version, so much passion.
yeah paul, dulli is passion encarnate. soul and heart.
Dulli is a musical genius and his work will never be forgotten.
despite there semi-obscurity, the whigs can be proud of their albums and their influence will only grow over time black love was a masterpiece

16 years later and this song still has my heart. Can't wait to see them next month.
My whole life I’m thinkin’ the lyric is “c’mon uptown and see the mess I’m in tonight.”

I couldn't agree more, man. "Soup" and "Black Love" are two of my top 3 records ever. This live rendition is just beautiful. Thanks for posting!

My earliest comment was 12 years ago. My latest is now. STOP! Every jetski in the river can hurt you.

After a long time I hear this song and finally understand the lyrics, it hurts when you lose someone to infidelity.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. He does the same thing to me.

@browcr totally!
I've found Black Love is about half perfection and half solid but lacking songs I skip to listen to the perfection part. This one? Perfection.
Howlin' Maggie's Harold Chichester bringing the keys and the vocals.

Absolutely the best Christian Rock band EVER to come out of Cincinnati Ohio USA.
