School of Seven Bells - "My Cabal"

- The David Mullett-directed video for "My Cabal" matches the song's woozy lilt with a new take on the usual band-performance video. In the clip, School of Seven Bells play in an equipment-stuffed soundstage as a single camera captures the action through a fisheye lens. The video's gorgeously saturated colors and disorienting, constantly-shifting camera angle create the sense of watching the band while sitting in a tiny, smoothly calibrated rollercoaster.

Thank you for the music, Benjamin.
Still in love with this record after all these years
same
OMG same guys !
Ben I saw many times play. He was 360-degrees of beautiful. Inside and out.
I mixed these guys at a show in Portland once. One of the few times I ended up really liking a band I had never heard of prior to the show. Considering what would go on to happen to this band, I guess I was pretty lucky to have seen and mixed them. And as jaded as I ended up getting in the music industry, that's saying something.
oh god. as beautiful as their luscious voices are, they are.. intimidatingly gorgeous.
the entire situation of just watching one of these videos is phenomenal.
Saw them at The Warfield in SF, just amazing.
The production on this album is godlike.
I still think about Benjamin Curtis from time to time and come back to this video
My heart is with you Alejandra.
Great marriage of images and sound.
Rip Ben...
A talent lost too soon : /
Miss you so much girl. Hope you are well.
I have been addicted to this song for over a month now. I love those over-processed mbv-style backing coos on the chorus.
Glad I found this!
+Femi Oki Welcome to the beautiful world of shoegaze. :)
Love the tune and the band; the vid makes me woozy indeed!
Majestically huge and gut- spinning!
absolutely amazing.
I always have a soft spot for ethereal rock played well! *****
Beautiful
This is pure shoegazing love, if you ask me.
Years later after expanding my music experience I must say in hindsight these guys sounded best just embracing shoegaze. For whatever reason (and it's a shame) they tried distancing themselves from the shoegaze label and comparisons with those artists in the early 90s. They dropped some really solid tracks, but between him and his brother there was oh so much potential that really didn't go anywhere. It's also a shame he passed right as shoegaze was making a revival. Their appeal would have went through the roof by 2017ish.
Aww Ben what a shame :( but thank you for beautiful music.
GOODness gracious.. that Lead singer is just TOO TOO cute-- and on top of it, she sings like an angel. Wonderful tune, also.
Fantastic tune, great video and camera work.
i like this song, Is My favorite
@protobuster Yes, saw them open up for both Blonde Redhead and M83 and they don't disappoint.....the guitarist for the Cocteau Twins helped them produce this album....i think his name is Robin Guthrie
awesome!
Excellent music!!!
i hear a siouxie and the banshees sort of vibe. especially the slightly middle eastern tinged vocal melodies and the electro shoegaze sound. so so good...
Never heard this band before thank 2 my amazing local radio station 90.9 fm
adorei...fazia tempo que não ouvia uma banda assim,,,desde dos anos 80...muito boa a sincronia!!!
Still great! Half these views are mine.
very good
great vid. saw this band in brighton - fan since then.
WOW!
love this song, cool video
makes me feel as if i'm floating in a dream
awesome video! sweet song 2!!!
School of Seven Bells is like, Tegan and Sara on crack, was the first thing that went through my mind. I love them both though -
Remind me a LOT of the Cocteau Twins...
+Basil II Macedonia yes, but only us of a certain age will notice
Nick Harman LOL!! I'm thinking of the "Heaven or Las Vegas" era..
+Basil II Macedonia that was probably their most accessible period
Wow! What an awesome video!
good work with camera
neat band, really good sound, quite beautiful visually too :)
She perrformed at UCSB. I was working on event staff. She walked past me during her rehearsal and I said she sounded amazing and she said "Thanks. Awesome :)" ^_^
Hit the air
every time i see her. ale i love you, and my being is only for you. all that it encompasses is all for you.
Happy PEOPLE!
Small frame girl.. look how big the Hagstrom F200P looks on her
R.I.P
Vibes
The music is "water with sugar", but the girls is so lovely...
It amuses me to imagine that being literally true. Imagining them on stage, unable to stop throwing up, coughing, and sneezing....but still playing all the while. I'm strange. :/
15 people don't understand the artistic talent of SSB.
@EMCowdrey ... yeah, they were SO boring live!!!! snoooooze. saw them in orlando!
@EmilyEvanopsi
ca·bal (kə bäl′, -bal′)
noun
1. a small group of persons joined in a secret, often political, intrigue; junta
2. the intrigues of such a group; plot
I'm fucking dizzy!
like being hypnotized at zero G
@chazzarre shut it..they make good quality music
@RancidMilkDealer i know dude they opened for interpol on feb 5 2011 at the marquee and their show was sick
why does she pronounce "cabal" wrong?
she says "cable" instead of "Kuhbahl" how it's normally pronounced.
My cable costs too much.
Put your claim to the test last night. They delivered in spades!
@poppiesinoctober I was there too! lol
Allie & Claudia are from Miami.
I thought of Lush when I first heard the song.
I've seen them three times. the last time, the second twin wasn't with them and there was no explaination. It was still a good show, but I'm still wondering if the band is in tact.
Depends on the music and what stage of the high they're in. Also, I may argue the position you're sitting in.
@sodypopspace haheahehae.. in Brazil "water with sugar" or translating: "água com açúcar" means that something is kinda boring.
WOW
i've fallen so deeply into aimless infatuation with alejandra.
The Cocteau Twins sisters and it was produced by Robin Guthrie !!!
Cool for someone fond of the Cocteau Twins like me.
like it
IT SOUNDS LIKE "THE CURVE"
Brooklyn i believe
I also want to know why paper is so different.
Aw, love what Allie's wearing. I'm obssessed with her collar....anyone know where it's from!?
I love them! It's too bad that "Disconnect From Desire" debuts at #200 on Billboard's album chart, as that will likely be the peak position. If KEXP isn't playing "My Cabal", I'm requesting the hell out of it!
Woah...I almost got sick watching that video with all the camera movement, lol. Rollercoaster is right. Or maybe I just had my eyes too close to the screen. Anyways, great song, I love this band. The lyrics are amazing too. You can dance to the music but at the same time can really sit down and think about what they're saying.
Does anyone know what guitar she is using? I think it's a Gibson but I'm not sure on the model.
hagstrom f200p
@imaginationunreal Lush is who I thought of too...
@motodude1 I think the prenounciation depends on where you're from, because it sounds absolutely fine to me
School of Seven Bells - searching their tracks for one as good as ILU. So far all the same, lilting lift music. Needs something more, more punch. I was listening to a few but I fell asleep... ILU was good track, a solid tune, a riff and a catch onto the soul. Have they done anything as good? Please say if so.
+yereverluvinuncleber check out Camarilla and Low Times. Some serious synth jams.
I shall, thank you.
+yereverluvinuncleber "More punch". I know what you mean. "Ablaze" has it, but it might not be to your liking.
I shall listen.
"This is Our Time," "On My Heart," and "Open Your Eyes" are my favs right now
If I could only take two things to desert island both of them would be those sisters. And I'd make them kiss.
joliiiiiii👍
does anyone knows where these girls are from? I mean they look like spanish or latin kind of stylo !
Twins :)
Very similar though. Listen to "Frou Frou Foxes" then, "The Wait" back to back.
Yeah, few bands could touch the Cocteau Twins but, SVIIB is close.
@clebercoxaroots water with sugar?
RIP
sounds like the bastard child of u2 and my bloody valentine sung by the corrs
Trtppy! :)
Wow - I thought they have a similar sound to The Cocteau Twins. Also "Book of Love".
I would commit myself to Alejandra as a queen, so readily.
I find myself a little bit in love with the singer. As that natural?
@kasuskasus
yeah, i know what are you talking about :)
late-aughts nugaze at its apex. rip ben.
guitarist has amazing hair...
I think I liked them better than Interpol, I didn't know Juliette Binoche was the lead singer, far out!
@badish85 that's not the highlight of my life. Never said it was. I just thought it was pretty cool.
They are saying "my cable" - what - a co-ax?
It is pronounced CAR-BAHL . From the French "cabale" or earlier latin.
Never heard the Yanks do quite such a pronounced mispronunciation :)
+yereverluvinuncleber So you haven't actually heard any other song from Alpinisms, have you? If I go and look up "Iamundernodisguise" are you going to be in there bitching about the lack of spaces?
You should probably stick to whatever rigid, by the numbers crap you normally listen to. I don't think this stuff is for you.
lack of spaces? - what are you talking about?
I don't normally respond to people who struggle to understand English.
I cringed when I heard this.... I like this band a lot and I like this song but yikes I have never heard cabal=cable before
love this song and love the band, but this video gave me the spins. X(
