School of Seven Bells - "Half Asleep"

- Опубліковано 27 сер 2024
- In School of Seven Bells music, a human element lurks behind a veil of technology and noise; Toby Holbrooks video for the Brooklyn trios Half Asleep follows suit, depicting real-life twin vocalists Alejandra and Claudia Deheza as earthbound beauties, while complicating their image through sped-up film, gauzy overlays, and brightly colored, weather-like disturbances. The clip conjures a sad, surreal feeling that sticks with you long after the images fade.

One of the best, most underrated bands!! Four wonderful albums...RIP Ben Curtis you left us far too soon ❤
i remember talking to Ben outside of Trees in Deep Ellum in the 90's. he had just finished a show with UFOFU. i got a kick out of him telling me his mom had to sign a waiver for him to perform because he was underage at the time
15 years I missed out on this song. At least I found it...
Rest in Peace, Benjamin Curtis. Your music will remain with all of us.
This remains my life's favourite song. I doubt any track will every replace it. It is as perfect today as when I first heard it. Just sublime.
I really didn't realize they were two different people until yesterday. Trippy.
SVIIB is totally underrated. Massively good music, Almost all of it, let alone their last LP. This is awesomely good. Great lyrics. Love it.
"What begins as an unguarded train of thought slowly can become
An addiction to the slumber of disconnection
And the resonance of memory that no longer has a shape
But keeps you numb through the hours till gone is another day"
So much truth to this.
This song is just devastating with it's ethereal and fleeting beauty. A total embodiment of the band. I weep for the loss.
I weep all the time. No other group captured how I felt all the time.
This is a lyrical masterpiece. What a beautiful song.
When they played this live, it became 1,000 times more powerful. I was lucky enough to witness it twice when they opened to Interpol back in 2011. Benjamin RIP.
If ever music was made to be immersive and lost inside, it’s this music. It has a magical quality that invites you to live inside. A wonderful song
blaring this, going 70 down the highway crossing the city skyline is an unforgettable feeling.
This is their most recognized track and it’s barely relevant in UA-cam views. But that’s okay. Those of us who have recognized this greatness are the only ones who were meant to feel the way this makes us feel.
I appreciate so much that you've said this. So many emotions felt 💗
I really like lefaye and a couple songs this is definitely good
"those who have ears to hear..."
Don't forget ILU
For me it’s a tie between Conjur and this. These are both sublime.
This, in my opinion, is the most representative, powerful and absorbing track of their entire music career. And the lyrics - gosh.
Haven't heard much of their other stuff outside "Windstorm," which I like. Gonna have to check out their full albums.
I've been going through all their stuff the past year or so and they're just sublime
I totally agree. That's a great description of it b/c I don't much listen to them but this was their song that stood out for me and which I always come back to. Need to check out their catalog.
Have you ever heard "Ablaze"? ufff man!! One of the best songs from SVIIB FOR SURE!
It's, in fact, the only song from them I like. (I don't listen to genres like this at all, but this song is different)
I always come back to this video. These girls are so beautiful. I’ve been in love since forever
I saw them in Sydney Australia around July 2012 on a bleak wet wintry night in a half full small concert venue. Benjamin and Ally were unforgettable. Ben smiled at me as I was going off at the front. What a band. RIP Benjamin Curtis.
Lyrics
Sometimes I go whole days
listening bored, half asleep
I won't say anything
that's worth a thing to me
One day, suddenly, time
took a turn that once felt so brief
I blinked to see polite ghosts fading quickly
What begins as an unguarded
train of thought slowly can become
an addiction to the slumber
of disconnection and the resonance
of memory that no longer has a shape
but keeps you numb through
the hours till gone is another day
Be aware, my darling
these things I say I mean
are just traces of something
I long to feel again
I see our time expand
in the air almost forcibly,
spreading thinner till it dissolves completely
ஐ ॐφ thank you,kind soul
I'm going through my pandora history tonight. Tearing up, lost the last 3 years of my life to dissociation and these lyrics were a warning.
Holy shit this makes sense now that I'm older. I've been listening to this song for years.
Love this band. So underrated.
The same goes for The Secret Machines, the band the guy was in before School of Seven Bells.
I saw them in London probably 10 plus years ago now. A cracking gig.
I saw them supporting (I think) Bat for Lashes at the Ritz in Manchester, must be at least 15 years ago.
This song is still kind of perfect isn't it?
Will always be perfect. The lyrics make it so.
The harmony in this music is literally spiritual.
The voice of angels, omg! Tears are literally falling from my eyes, cause this is one of their best songs off this album. Too beautiful!
If you read the lyrics, it is absolutely mind-blowing that they made a melody out of those words. On paper, it doesn't look like they'd fit at all.
Fell in love with this song the first time I heard it in 08. It has become one of my most cherished song of all time. RIP. xoxx
This describes treatment-resistant depression better than anything I have ever encountered:
What begins as an unguarded
Train of thoughts slowly can become
An addiction to the slumber
Of disconnection and the resonance
Of memory that no longer has a shape
But keeps you numb through
The hours till gone is another day
Just perfect, RIP Ben
YES!!! The sisters doing a cut that is among their best. So fine...RIP BC.
I LOVE THIS! The song is beautiful, the ladies are beautiful, and I'm thrilled that a new album is coming soon. In a righteous world, this would be a smash hit. I could just live in this sound....
RIP Benjamin Curtis .... we all loved your song from Brazil
It’s cool how prophetic this song is. So ahead of it’s time.
This song creates this ethereal timelessness...it's almost too perfect being about some sense of being half asleep. They somehow matched the concept with the lyrics with the music. I hope this is what dying sounds like.
sosb was the first concert I ever went to, it was so magical, their music makes me appreciate the beauty people can produce in this world. LOVE this band forever!
S7IIB
Absolutely GORGEOUS vocal harmonies! At 1:03, turn up the highs in your stereo.. it's bright, sharp.. energizing, UPLIFTING! Puts such a smile on my face. I know the lyrics are a bit heavier in content but the music is just so EXHILARATING ! LOVE, NOT LIKE!
This is one of those groups that I heard five seconds of on the radio and went "Whaaaaat the?" I've been hooked ever since. Thank you ladies and Ben.
I just discovered this group. Exceptional. What Have I missed all these years. Love the harmonies. Only. sisters Could be that in sync.
This song speaks to me more than any other song ever written. And I probably won't tell this to anyone I end up dating in the future about how I go thru whole days, listening, bored, half asleep. Unless they're able to also see how most relationships spread thinner till they dissolve completely. Then maybe we'd both get over it and have a chance.
This song man...
absolute chills.
Rest in peace Ben.
Proabably...still love it's 4.20 long and has a kick ass video my favorite band
Got to see and then speak to these guys after their set in length when they were opening for Interpol on my birthday. I had asked if they had any idea if Interpol had a particular song on that nights set list...Absolutely made my night when Paul dedicated Not Even Jail to " the birthday boy".
This is such a special song. It always will be.
How could anyone on this earth or any other planet think this song would ever deserve a thumbs down?! School Of Seven Bells is legit!
This song is simply perfect!
The lyrics... the ambience... the voice... the voice tone...
It's been on my playlists for months and I'm still to find it a flaw!
It actually makes me deeply upset that people don't like School of Seven Bells, how can you not. Beautiful!
Most definitely one of the freshest groups, to have emerged in recent years, they are truly great.
this is one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard. remember seeing you play live in molotow, hamburg ages ago as if it were yesterday.. rip ben and my friend anne who recently also died of cancer at such a young age. take care & lots of love!
Damn, I'll miss him. This was one of my favourite songs for years and years.
This makes my heart swell. Unfortunately I have no one to share this feeling with
Awww, there are many of us here listening. ❤
These girls are seriously angels...
This is song is too amazing for me so when I saw that there was a video, I was worried it wouldn't do the song justice. In all honesty, I'm impressed.
Imagine, I could have gone my whole life without hearing this song. What a crap life that would have been!!!
Now this is just my li'l opinion, but this is one of the most absolutely perfect songs I have ever heard in my life.
so psychedelic with amazing vocals and a wall of ambient sound. video fits the mood of the song well also. ace indeed!
Iamundernodisguise is absolutely there most psychedelic song
I'm Eternally grateful for being able to see them live circa 2012.
Requiescat in Pace Benjamin.
Yes!! One of my favorite concerts ever...saw them in Oakland 2012.
Saw them in Sydney Australia around July 2012, Winter cold night small audience they blew my mind.
Heartbreakingly beautiful.
This song still moves me. Stunningly gorgeous.
i love songs where you can feel so many emotions at once.
where you can also recall memories.
this song does that for me.
Pure beauty.
What an amazing song! What an amazing group they were!
It's amazing how much this song relaxes me and improves my mood drastically.
I first heard this song while I was asleep with MTV2 on in the background. I'm so lucky I was able to wake up and get the band's name just in time for the video to finish, otherwise I would've thought this was a song I made up in my sleep. Beautiful song.
This is my new favourite song. How had I never heard of this band!?
Watching this video just now for the first time at the end of 2022. I can hardly believe it's already 13 years old and I am now just discovering how beautiful this song is.
has brought tears to my eyes, more than once
an addiction to the slumber of disconnection.
Finally, you fell asleep. RIP Benjamin Curtis.
beautifull melodie. The feelings are floding me as I listen. thanks for sharing
This and the Lusine remix ALWAYS gives me chills
I love it
great show in brighton yesterday. brilliant live-band, beautiful tunes. oh, and: beautiful singers. i was happy.
Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. You are really taking all of my time away from working on my own music. Thanks so much for all the wonderful compositions! ⭐❣️
Fun fact: The uncredited cinematographer for this video was David Lowery, the dude who directed 'Ain't Them Bodies Saints' - his first full-length feature. I predict he'll be a big name in American cinema within a few years and this video will be a relic of his early work in film.

not bad ariel
Ya did good Ariel
Time traveler confirmed.
Absolutely beautiful video and music. I love the expression on their faces as they sing the somber lyrics. Bravo! I'll definitely be checking out more from them.
Love this song... it's ethereal.
such a wonderfully written song. i resonate so much with the lyrical content.
Reminds me of when I was bumbling through the halls of my high school and my classes, half asleep. That was when i first heard the song.
Thanks for your halfwit take
Latecomer.. Great song.. Dream pop-ish.. Thank you..
Great song, genres are just words, appreciate the music for what it is
In my top ten of all time
My top 10 as well
I caught their show at Slim's in San Francisco last night. Wow! Just wow!
beautiful in every way..SVIIB is just on a different level
R.I.P.
These are seriously some of the best lyrics i have ever heard... love this song.
THEY MAKE ME HAPPY
I fell in love with this song the first time that I heard it over the radio at work... normally mall muzak is lame but this one really stood out. The lyrics and the dreamy nature of the music gives me goosebumps! :D This goes instantly into the list of songs that I can directly relate to. Awesome work ladies!
Personally, I think it's a celestial song with beautiful verbal pictures.
This song haunts my brain. It's constantly playing in the background of my mind.
RIP Benjamin Curtis
i'm an extreme metal fan and this song is amazing
Thanks for all the great music Benjamin!
This reminds me of Slowdive. And Cocteau Twins. Yes: I'm that old :) Brilliant melodies though. Love it.
Love this group. They are tapping into something special that, yes Joshua, calms me down no matter where I am or what I am doing.
I always remember this song to stop myself from being dragged into feeling over nostalgic.. urgh hate this feeling
Love the song tho!
Damn time flies....
Hope you all are having an excellent day! I know mine was made better by stopping by here. Feeling very inspired to go write some music right now! 💙🙃🙏🤗💜
What begins as an unguarded
train of thoughts slowly can become
an addiction to the slumber
of disconnection and the resonance
of memory that no longer has a shape
but keeps you numb through
the hours till gone is another day
thats how i feel :D
Saw them last night with Interpol, she's absolutely stunning and almost freakishly tiny. I have no idea how she was even able to support her guitar, it was bigger than she was.
She has an awesome voice which just seems to echo naturally.
so melodic, i can't get over it
This song is so beautiful. Thanks, Pandora!
Wonderful new group--thanks to WXPN-FM for the info on them... ! Best station around here if you like unbiased pure music....
LOVE THIS SONG!!
Brilliant song. This album was definitely one of the best purchases I have ever made.
the volume was ok. loud, but not too loud. and then, they're not so much about noise but about these beautiful harmonies - in the electronic, guitar and the vocal parts. it came across perfectly.
very chill, soothing and tranquil song to listen to.
simply beautiful . The more I listen/watch, the more sad it makes me feel - still love it though.
