I love the way you turn to camera B with the line "That would have been madness" then look back to camera A, with perfect editing. Brilliant! Love the sound of your instruments. Hopefully some day I'll be able to one or two (or 5 or 10). :-)
That is the coolest instrument I have ever seen!! You can record an entire soundtrack for a horror movie, or for a fight scene! Just with one instrument
@MattNolanCustom This is so crazy with the colours shapes and i´ve never heard steel cymbals sounding soo good! Yeah thanks i found it! Great cymbals but at the moment i have not that much money! But i buy a cymbal for sure someday! Masterpiece of cymbal art!
Wonderful Matt. Love it sir!! How about a cross shaped one to put on the largest drum set in the world. I really appreciate what you do! All the best...RevM.
Hi! I have made sculptural gongs in many shapes. Round, square, cross-shaped, oval, egg-shaped, bat-wing shaped, bat-head shaped, pirate-flag shaped, pig-head-shaped, etc.
thank you Matt ;-) i used to make cast bronze bowls but they never sounded that good but they were 85-5-5-5 and silicon never tried pure copper tin alloy.
That's right. Yamaha borrowed the gong and some cymbals for their new Hex Rack kit demo set. You can also get free sample packs for some of the Yamaha DTX kits with my cymbals and some gongs in them. Nice folks there...
That´s right i understand that! Ok thank you! The "in the workshop video" i´ve already seen! This work is so interesting! Can your cymbals be bought on a website or do you just sell to a customer!?
The first hand gong took not just hours, but several days! Check my website for prices on regular cymbals. I can't post the link in these youtube comments but it is up there under "show more" in the video description. Thanks!
Was privileged enough to hit it yesterday. Give it a nice soft thump... seems quiet... wait for about 1-1.5 seconds and it gets SO loud. Very weird... VERY cool!!!
The outline shape, the shape profile in the third dimension and the localised tension profile across the surface all affect the sound. It is part of my art to balance these to produce a pleasing sounding and looking result
@Kevinkoch2443 No cymbal-making video from very first to very last step - some of what I do is secret! - but you can see a lot of the stages in my video called "In the workshop" - sorry youtube won't let me post a link
@Kevinkoch2443 I will be doing some more videos that show more of the creative process. Keep tuned! I make pieces by commission and also for general sale. There are some on my website currently and also places like RareVintageCymbals and MyCymbal websites
This one sounds as if someone took this exact instrument - and I mean exactly this one - to make the clangy, gongy and scareful sounds of the Diablo II soundtrack (which in my opinion is still unreached in terms of atmosphere and darkness). AMazing.
MattNolanCustom Sure, this one was manufactured too late in time for the creation for that particular soundtrack, but I can easily see how one of your instruments could have ended up in their studios. Great work!

It's 11pm and I'm watching videos of gongs.
The sound is just bonechilling. It has some sort of divine vibe to it, like it's the left hand of god. Awesome piece man!!
Very cool. I've been drumming for 17 years and I've never seen anything like that! I loved the sounds from the bow.
Just found your site. Sir, you are a genius. I absolutely love the hand. Beautiful and incredible.
How does this only have 3500 views? One of my favorites!
incredible video, very funny and excellent craftmanship!

Wow that is so awmazing!!! Do you actually have a cymbal making video from 1st to last step???
Love the Bannana break in the time lapse!
I need a hand gong. Perhaps as a terrifying door bell?
That´s right i understand that! Ok thank you! The "in the workshop video" i´ve already seen! This work is so interesting! Can your cymbals be bought on a website or do you just sell to a customer!?
Amazing 😉 Thank you so much for your quality

Did having the camera all the time effect how you worked on this? Or were some things removed? Nice video. Cool.
this sounds ubelievable good!! great work, love it.
Was privileged enough to hit it yesterday. Give it a nice soft thump... seems quiet... wait for about 1-1.5 seconds and it gets SO loud.
Very weird... VERY cool!!!

what a man! a truly incredible gongsmith :-)
This thing is perfect for horror movie ambiance.
You said it, the sounds remind me of "30 days of night" movie soundtrack
I've never seen any gong besides round... there's so many potential shapes to try!
That gong is just one piece of art! :O
Beautiful sculpture and beautiful sound. How did you feel the form affects the sound ?
The outline shape, the shape profile in the third dimension and the localised tension profile across the surface all affect the sound. It is part of my art to balance these to produce a pleasing sounding and looking result
Who recorded that version of Flight of the Bumble Bee?
My cousin owns one of these hand gongs. Quite impressive.
SONYtec03 wow, what a chance !

how much do one cost?
This may be the video that inspired me to use a 30 gallon steel drum as an instrument.
Don't mind me, just revisiting an excellent video.
OMG, I thibk you can use this cymbal for all the BSO of a terror film. Its brutal!
Awesome.
The thing sounds like a fighter jet. So freaking cool.
Quite a handy gong when it comes to meta music.
Ba da tchi!
Who in Chicago did you make it for...originally?
5:56 sounds like somthing out of a horror game/movie o.o its glorious
@Kevinkoch2443 I will be doing some more videos that show more of the creative process. Keep tuned!

thanx again mr matt!
The man in Norway has the original, much smaller version of the gong. It is a very different instrument to the large version.
wow!!! very, very interesting video!!
thanck you!!
besides: this is the first time iv'e seen the term "hand-made" been taken so literal!
This one sounds as if someone took this exact instrument - and I mean exactly this one - to make the clangy, gongy and scareful sounds of the Diablo II soundtrack (which in my opinion is still unreached in terms of atmosphere and darkness). AMazing.
Well, it wasn't this one unless they sampled it from my videos. But I have made others and I don't know where they all are any more...
