Hey Luke, thank you for the shout-out! My biggest problem with Snugpak is their garbage sleeping bag zippers. I actually own the Journey Solo, which is essentially the same tent. I've been happy with it. Carry on!

Bought one of these in February and took it out for an overnight. Had an unexpected shower pass through for a few hours over the night. The inside of the tent stayed absolutely, positively 100% BONE dry. In the morning all I had to do was give the tarp a few shakes and all the water was off. It didn’t soak into the material like some cheaper tents I’ve used.

I purchased the Ionosphere about 2 years ago after watching your review. It's a good tent for what it is, think upscale bivy bag. Not a lot of room inside, especially if you're trying to store gear and change clothes in inclement weather. Otherwise it's done it job. Thanks Luke for keeping it honest and us informed.

Luke, SnugPak is not the only company that has quality problems. When I was a kid I helped my dad rebuild British Leyland sports cars. Daddy liked Jags and MGs. My first car was a used 1967, MGB ($600 and racing green and sweet). Before 1970 they were fairly well built. After 1970 they had serious quality issues. I asked around and did a little research. After 1970, British Leyland had bad labor/union issues. So, there was the answer. My point is, when you stay with a business long enough, you can watch the quality get better or worse. Big Pat on the back to you for sticking with this job, The Outdoor Gear Review. Thanks for helping us. Texas

As you pointed out Luke, now their products are made in China...as I am from the UK which Snugpak are based, it is a little dis-heartening that they do not make quality kit items in house anymore, little tip, when looking for Snugpak products on ebay etc, the older ones will state Made in England, newer ones, made in China...go for the British made for peace of mind in quality, tents, jackets, sleeping bags etc....keep up the great work my friend.
    Regards.

Bought a Snugpak Scorpion 3 in early 2021. Thing is bomb proof, has withstood rain, sleet, snow, freezing rain, high winds... not one drop inside the tent. No loose threads anywhere, taped seems etc. are all spot on. You can get quality out of China, but you need to get them to make it to spec - which I'm sure costs more. Very, very happy with the Scorpion 3 I got BUT.... I gambled and won. Seems so hit or miss, not gambling again. Nor do I care to send my $ to China. C'mon Snugpak, make your stuff in the UK again, even if threre's a Chinese version too. I would gladly pay extra to support jobs in the UK or US...

I bought the snugpak xocet backpack 3-4 years ago. I really liked the look of it. First day after receiving it the sidepockets fell apart. What looked like mesh was actually a very flimsy plastic net that broke the second I put in a waterbottle. Customer support claimed I had been too rough on it.
So that ended my snugpak interest.

I have experience using the Chinese made version. It has handled heavy duty storms with heavy winds extremely well. The super low profile design is as close to “wind proof “ as I can imagine a tent being. Once in a long heavy all night storm water did splash in under the fly and created a wet mess. The fly is great under 99% of situations. If camping in extreme weather in the future I’ll cover my setup with my aqua quest tarp and stay warm and dry.

I bought the ionosphere late last summer, it may very well have been the worst mistake of my life. Luke, you have inspired me to test my equipment before taking it out in the field. I did so with the ionosphere and found at the testing that it was waterproof. I had full confidence when I took it on a 2 day weekend trip. We made it through the first day of the trip with no complications, that was until I crawled into the ionosphere. First part of the night was fine minimal wind with an occasional rain shower. The second half of the night was filled with violent thunderstorms and a lot of wind. I never expect a tent to be perfect in the wind, but with its freestanding design I was very surprised to find the amount of flapping that was going on with the sides of the fly. Come to find out in the middle of the night the stitching on the whole left side of the fly ripped to shreds. Let’s just say after that it was an awful night haha. Thought I’d leave you with that little piece of info, I’ve just never heard of a tent doing that.

I only have 2 Snugpak products; the old ionoshphere and the jungle blanket. I have no complaints with either. Together with a light weight sleeping pad they make for a nice camp setup. I have used them in the fall and spring and never gotten cold at night. I think because of its size the ionosphere holds in heat very well. Thanks for the review.

Thanks for this. Bought the Ionosphere only a few months ago. I've had 3 nights in it so far, two of them in constant rain and stayed completely dry. I have had no issues. I wish it had an overhead pocket like the Stratosphere though. I have also solved the problem of having to shuffle in feet-first by switching to a Thermarest Vesper blanket strapped to an Exped Downmat 9. Way easier to climb in and get comfy, instead of wrestling with a sleeping bag zip when there is not enough room to sit up!

Another honest product review Luke. The tent looks like a nice low profile tent. I have a helpful hint for the loose threads just burn them with a lighter when they get close to the seam blow it out and smear it with your thumb usually the thread will melt and stick right to the seam so it won't come loose just a helpful hint. Be safe out there ✌️

I've been a Snugpak user for a few years now and personally have had no problems. I use the Patrol Poncho which is really good and have just got the liner for it which I will use this year. I also use the Jungle blanket which is great and I have started using it instead of a sleeping bag. I also have just got the Stratosphere but haven't used it in bad weather yet but very impressed with the quality. I also use DD for my hammocking gear/tarps and vango for tents so not exclusively Snugpak but I don't think they have anymore issues as any other manufacturer.

Snugpak used to make their products in Yorkshire, about 20mi from where I live. It was so sad that they sold out and moved a lot of production to China.
My dad lost his job with British Paper Board (BPB) along with half of the town when they moved the machines to China in the 90s. It ruined him. He'd worked for them for 40 years since leaving school when it happened.

    From snugpak, I've had:
ionosphere and elite 4 sleeping bag ~2016, fantastic kit, used down to -10°c and was comfortable with a good thermal mat. The tent packs down nice and small as well. Only thing i dont like is the fly on the ionosphere doesnt seem to come down far enough.
Jungle bag and jungle blanket 2018/2019, really good but the blanket seemed a bit pricey for what it is.
Pakbox 2x 6 litre 2020, simple but extremely useful.
Bought a scorpion 2 at the start of this year, slept in it twice down at 3-5°c so far and I was extremely comfortable.
I've seen the change in the tent pegs, the additional of a cord hole doesnt make up for them thinning the pegs down

The problems Snugpak had are indeed well documented. I have got one of their Patrol Ponchos, and it is big enough to cover me and a 60l pack easily. It is fantastic. And it does keep me dry! I also have one of their Jungle Blankets - basically a poncho liner without any way of fixing it in place - and that does the job. I have been thinking about getting an Ionosphere for a long time - the tent was very popular with "professional" users in uncomfortable places a few years ago. Perhaps Part 2 will decide the issue!

I really like the design of their Patrol Ponchos, but not the size. If you're over 5'8" inches, it's a stretch. For me, the sleeves don't come close in length, and with a pack, the back of my thighs get drenched. My 5'6" girlfriend found it to be sized great for her and her pack though.

Snugpak use to be UK forces favourite for Gucci kit in 90s. It was all about the sleeping bags replacing the issued ones at half the weight and size. If you were really cold you would get out your softy top or put it on for post exercise sleep. 25 years later same kit going strong. 3 man tent bought in 2015 is also going strong even in storms.

I bought a Snugpak Softie 12 sleeping bag in the early ‘90s and it’s held up no problems at all.
However, now I read on many UK forums that people are having lots of issues related to the waterproofness of tent products such as the Stratosphere bivvy tent, users say they not waterproof and they need a tarp erected to keep them dry, which kind of defeats the point of the Stratosphere in the first place. Also, looking today at Snugpak’s UK site, they have your 4-year video test of the Ionosphere as a reason for people to buy.

  • @trustbuster23

I have one of the older ionosphere tents and it has served me well and held up just fine. It's a good, reasonably lightweight, bivy style tent. The only thing I really don't like about it: it is not a fly-first pitch and it takes a bit of time to set up the inner tent, so it is a bit of a hassle to deal with when trying to set it up in the rain and keep the inside dry. I tend to take it when I don't expect rain, because it also doesn't breathe particularly well if you can't leave the door open. But it will absolutely keep you dry in the worst weather once it is up and it is solid as rock once you get it pitched, assuming you are somewhere where you can get the stakes in the ground. I also have a couple of the "jungle blankets" and I would rate those as ok for what I paid, but probably not something that will last forever. My assumption is that they have a certain number of washes that they'll survive and then they are done for.

Luke, while I am a pretty big Snugpak fan... I echo a lot of what you say here.
Keep in mind they still do have a lot of UK made products (and those are nothing short of stellar in my opinion), but they are usually more expensive items. I haven’t kept around a lot of the import items from snugpak, but when I choose to buy one I do as you say... inspect immediately and know that I can return or exchange it if need be. If it arrives as it was designed, even most of the import stuff is pretty decent.
I tend not take gambles on water proof items though.... so YMMV. Cheers brother!!!

I just recently bought some of their sleeping bags cause they were the most compact ones I could find for my budget and it was really important to me that 2 bags can be zipped together. They are the "UK made" ones and I haven't found a single fault with the quality of materials and sewing. I hear there is a big gap in quality between the UK and China made equipment from Snugpak, so buyers may need to double check that as well.

it would be good to have everything in 1 video with all the tests so we can get a definitive answer on the tent. keep up with the good work.

I got the stasha tarp or what ever it is as an emergency shelter basically to use in conjunction with a poncho and bug net when I don’t really intend on staying out over night. I’ve used it 5 nights and (knock on wood) no major issues. The corners are not as well stitched as I would have thought theyd be. A canopy wall you can get at academy sports the sil nylon ones are better in my experience but they’re bulkier and heavier.

I don't think that it's as bad, as to not get one. I have the new version for a year and I don't have any issues so far.Where did you read all those negative comments about this tent? I know that many soldiers around the world use the Ionosphere.
Please, Did you read any comments about leaking water inside the tent?

I bought one of these and really like this few yrs back. But, I wish entrance was from side and offer a vestibule. I have not been in rain with it yet. But have found using a poncho over the tent entrance gives me that extra coverage with some sticks and line.

I had an issue with a defective Stratosphere, it leaked like crazy. They did however replace it for free AND sent me a Sasquatch parka for my trouble. That's the only major issue I've had with them and I have A LOT of their gear and clothing... new and old.

Looks a lot like a tent I got from Walmart which I like. It was made by Bushnell and cost me 50 dollars about 4 or 5 years ago. Bathtub floor and a fly that clips in place. Weighs a little over 3 lbs. Good for backpacking but I'd rather have something bigger for car camping.

Amazon reviews are also being exploited too. For example a review score can be determined by the seller and can make it higher or near 5 stars. You simple change the review categories. If you gave it 1 star quality, and 1 star durability. They can change those from "quality to softness" then change "durability to watetproof". Its totally bs and companies are exploiting this like mad. You will see reviews with horrible marks near 3 stars ot 2 stars, yet somehow its 5 stars. Be careful and read most recent reviews people.

What do you think of their sleeping bags? Do you have any experience of them? I have only good experiences with Snugpak. But then I only bought and used their sleeping bags. They have all lived up to my expectations. At the moment I have used the sleeping bags Special Forces 1 and 2, Softie 9 Hawk and Softie 10 Harrier. It would been realy exciting to hear what you think about their sleeping bags? Thank you for a trustworthy channel when it comes to testing outdoor products for real. Greetings from Sweden 😊

I used to used Snugpak exclusively back in the early 2010s, great quality, competitive prices, British made, solid enough that the British army used them for years, they were proper quality products.
Then they started moving manufacturing to China and tbh the quality went downhill despite the costs increasing.
Sadly I can't really recommend them these days.

Luke, your advice is always VERY much appreciated!
I ordered the Snugpak Endurance 40 backpack after seeing your review on it here in the Netherlands, along with a Jungle Blanket and some other items.
The backpack is very good for the price I got it for (86,- Euros) and while some of the issues you mentioned have been fixed in the revised version (like the water bladder pocket now being in the right place and the addition of weight lifters), I was personally very much annoyed by the lid, which due to the elasticated sides has a habit of sliding up and backwards over the front of the backpack and exposing the snow cover. This also made it impossible to read any name tags or other velcro patches on the pack. It would only stay on if you packed the bag to the gills.
The Jungle Blanket: I love this thing. Quality was great, very warm. Nothing more to add about that.
However, their choice of importer for the Netherlands seems to reflect some of the issues you describe: poor management, shoddy quality control of their distributors. Noorloos (name of the distributor in NL) would list articles as available that actually were not on stock, then keep placating me with "it will be here in three weeks". After three weeks: no peep out of them. Upon me contacting them after yet another week about what's going on: Oh yeah it will be delivered next week. After 2-3 repetitions of this, I had enough and cancelled the order. It then took them another 14 days and a reminder to get back the remainder of the amount I had paid.
Reading up on Noorloos reviews (yeah, I know, should've done that beforehand) shows that this seems to be SOP for those guys.
A real shame, would really love to buy 1-2 more Jungle Blankets.
And just a month or so ago I was looking to upgrade my tent. Was hesitating between the Ionosphere and the Litefighter tent. The Litefighter was impossible to find for me in Europe and importing from the US would have been bloody expensive. And the Ionosphere seemed to be a little too small for a husky guy like me. That was when I came across your video on the Jack Wolfskin Gossamer II and went for that instead. Could not take it out yet, but I REALLY like what I see so far.

It's quite possible Snugpak had their stuff made in China in 2013, as well. For the few items Varusteleka has made in China, for example, they note that China CAN make good quality stuff if you hold them to it.

I can get behind that just about everything comes from China but a look online anywhere you'll see plenty of people say avoid it's made in China that's all you need to know, I've been put off plenty of cheap stuff coming out of China because I could tell they were cheap knockoffs I wasn't put off simply because it was made in China. I suspect the snugpak wants to keep costs down but expects profits to rise at the same time

From my experience with sourcing in China you can absolutely have good / top quality but you do have to work at QC/QA and do a lot of checking. Though it’s not that different from working with any supplier from any country.
