    break a leg means good luck because i think in old theatres there was a myth that wishing someone “good luck” would actually only bring bad luck, so they started saying break a leg instead to bring good luck, i guess because it’s the opposite

    • @mimidp2649
      @mimidp2649 3 роки тому +4

      Yeah I think it's because the worst thing that could happen is falling off stage and breaking your leg, so if you say that instead of "good luck" things can only go well in comparison! Backstage people don't say "good luck", that's just not the done thing 😂

    • @charlottesreadsthings211
      @charlottesreadsthings211 3 роки тому +4

      I think it was partly because understudies didn't get paid unless they performed so they used to say "break a leg" jokingly in the hopes it would actually happen so they got to go on 😅

    • @mimidp2649
      @mimidp2649 3 роки тому

      @@charlottesreadsthings211 ooo that's interesting. I like that theory! I just Googled and there's also another one about the 'leg line' of the stage and unpaid vaudeville actors reaching it, as well as one about bowing (goodness knows)... Turns out there are many possibilities!

    • @fatixa6792

      I heard it was because they were wishing for them to end up in a cast...

    Break a leg comes from a superstition in theater, it was bad luck to say good luck to the performers so they started saying break a leg instead!

    Loved this, especially as a hearing American who knows ASL. "Mwah" or "kiss fist" seems to be similar in ASL and BSL, so that's interesting. Didn't know several of the hearing ones either. Part 2 would be great to see!

    I'd love to watch a part 2! I'm learning BSL so it's interesting to learn slang things.
    I'd be interested to learn what signs are different in different parts of the UK as well - like if you have friends in different places who sign things differently

    I don't think Bite your tongue is to shut up as much as 'hold your tongue'...like watch what you say or do not provoke or offend. Hold back what you really want to say. Is similar but not quite the same. This is very interesting!!!

    @_judge_me_not 3 роки тому +10

    Yessss!!! The first one!!!😀
    I have a question
    Since you were born profoundly deaf , before you got your cochlear , you had no idea what sound is
    What did you imagine it to be?
    Before you had a concept
    And once you got your cochlear , did it match your expectations?

    • @quinquedecem
      @quinquedecem 3 роки тому +2

      What a stupid question?!

    • @_judge_me_not
      @_judge_me_not 3 роки тому +2

      @@quinquedecem it's not stupid
      It's interesting
      How deaf people imagine sound
      Similarly, how born blind people imagine sight
      You know , when blind people echolocate (not all do so) , the sounds that they make from clicks , they make an image in their mind and their visual cortex lights up , research shows
      They do have a way of experiencing sight , it's just different
      Similarly, deaf people also have a way of imagining and experiencing sound
      It's just different from ours
      It would be really interesting to know and understand their way
      Also , when deaf people lip read, their auditory cortex lights up , research shows
      This is truly amazing
      This q is in no way stupid
