4D shadows are 3D

- I noticed that this acrylic cube casts shadows that look exactly like the ones in 4D Golf. It turns out, it's a very physical way to experience what it's like operating a camera in 4D dimensions. #4dgolf

4D Golf is probably THE best way to experience extra-dimensional space and build intuition of how it works. Including the level builder was very smart and it's way more intuitive than I expected. Thank you for making such a novel and cool game, CodeParade!

The shadow of a piece of paper if the light is parallel to the side is just a line, a 1dimensional shape for example.
@ScienceD-hc8nc A piece of paper has width, though. Very little, but it still has it. A 1-dimensional line can't have width.
@@BambinaSaldanaThe shadow of a plane is a 1-dimensional line, and a piece of paper approximates a plane
Nice job! I’ve seen this demonstrated with a 4d object intersecting 3d space but never from a 3d object’s perspective in a higher dimensional space itself. Quite cool!

Bro I am doomscrolling, you can't provide me genuinely interesting and thought provoking content.
This is also a quantum physics theory called holographic universe, that states we could possibly be a 2D universe that feels 3D (we are the shadow of the cube) or we could be the shadow of a higher dimensional universe and still feel 3D (but signs of higher dimensions show up in quantum physics/math)
sadly it way more often just *_feels_* like our math breaks down at certain problems and cannot solve the problem unless we just "invent" all the other dimensions up to 11... :/

For anyone having trouble understanding what seeing 4D in 3D even means, think about it like this:
Imagine you're holding an apple. Now slice that apple at any point, from any angle. The yellow surface of your slice is a 2D slice of the 3D apple. Visualising something 4D in 3D is basically like taking a 4D apple, slicing it, then looking at the yellow surface of it.
I still dont get it

This is the best visualization of 4D anything I met yet. The movement changing the 3D scene was intuitive enough, but having the shadows helped even better.
People with dyslexia "look at what they have to do to mimic even a fraction of our power"
I have a question, we swing and make it move in the 3d world, but can we actually swing in 4d or do we just have to intersect the 3d world due to interactions with the 4th we move in that dimension?
You can swing in any direction in 4D but the camera still only sees one 3d slice of the 4d scene at a time. Some rotations change your aiming direction, others do not. Think about 'pitch' and 'yaw' on an airplane compared to 'roll'.
I can only comprehend 3D

The problem with 4D is always the same.
You’re trying to do 4D in 3D.
It’s just like 3D in our 2D media, it rely on illusions rather than actually being the real thing.
You named the new directions Kata and Ana?
Beautiful.
I believe those are fairly standard names for those directions?
Charles Howard Hinton actually coined these terms
Transitioning from 3D shadows to a golf game was a massive whiplash

You cannot visualize a 4th dimension. There are only 3 planes we can move one, and only 3 we can visualize. This is still 3D.

This fourth-dimensional bubble casts a three-dimensional shadow.
I just can't even wrap my head around this. Also how are you making all those 4D models?
Iirc he explains it in the devlogs
Rare to see someone actually use ana and kata. Thank you for using the best available term.
Calc 3 is what made me understand that 4d is another spatial dimension. That is what I spent my time figuring out instead of studying for that class. Worth.
Ohhh ok my brother.. Just its Trippy isn't it... Projection,, transformation from 4 to 2... It's very trippy... Wow, you made new words (or found some) for 4D movement (Ana and kata)!! But I feel like Inwards and outwards would also work
Ana and kata were actually coined all the way back in 1880! It's a shame not many people know about them
I looked these words up and they actually aren't brand new. This is from wikipedia:
Comparatively, four-dimensional space has an extra coordinate axis, orthogonal to the other three, which is usually labeled w. To describe the two additional cardinal directions, Charles Howard Hinton coined the terms ana and kata, from the Greek words meaning "up toward" and "down from", respectively.

nope, but the 3d shadow is turned 2d by viewing it on a screen
A 4d object casts a 3d shadow which casts a 2d shadow which casts a 1d shadow, yes. (The 1d shadow is impossible to see, since it's only a line of some length and 0 width.)

T if you believe this video then you're a fool believing everything on Internet.
That isn't 3d shadow, it's 2d because the surface it's casted onto is 2d.
If you cast a shadow on thick fog, you'll see it has width, height and depth. If you cast a shadow on a 3d chair, the shadow will conform to that 3d object making it 3d shadow. If you cast shadow from 4d light onto 4d object then the shadow will be 4d

Brotherman, the green is 2D, so it's actually 3d Golf but projected? Why arent we making a 3d Golf Game in 3d space.
All shadows are 3D. Most objects just aren't transparent. The scene that your 3D space is being projected into is still 3D right?. It seems more like you're viewing from a sub-dimension than a 4th spatial dimension.
I have almost comprehended 4D and it practically made me vomit.
Keep up the good work!
how do you make something 4d in a world that is 3d?
is "casting a shadow" very accurate? or is it kind of an analogy? or is it actually just a choice of how to project 4d into 3d and then into 2d that happens to end up feeling somewhat intuitive, and doesn't necessarily apply universally, and just happens not to make as much intuitive sense when done with 3d projected to 2d?
I don't see 3d to 2d raycasting as "casting a shadow". it's more like I'm doing a vacuuform on top of the 3d scene, projected backwards into the monitor, coloring it to match the first surfaces it touches, then flattening it back out, and putting that flat image on the monitor (and if there's foreshortening, the frame and formed surface expand to magically deal with that). I don't see any of the things "shadowed" by this process (the things occluded by the front-most faces).
What's people's obsession with 4d. It makes no sense why a fourth dimension would exist. Everything is in 3D and moves in 3D, even atoms
