1973 Schwinn Varsity Sport - clear coat of paint

Today we finally finished repainting the frame on the 1973 Schwinn Varsity Sport. We thought the yellow paint created a surface that was soft or easily marred so we put on a clear topcoat. We chose the yellow color to match the color of the bike when it was donated since we were originally going to touch up the paint. Instead, we painted the whole frame. The original paint color had a more orange tint.
We bought the paint at an auto parts and supply store. We may have used the wrong paint. If anyone has advice about what kind of paint to use on bike frames that gives a nice hard surface, please let us know in the comments. This was our first attempt at painting a frame and we have another frame we are going to paint (a Schwinn 1965 Slik Chick).
The paint we used was Krylon Farm and Implement High Gloss Tractor Yellow and the top coat was Krylon ColorMaxx Clear Indoor/Outdoor Flat Crystal Clear.
