- Wilmington North Carolina | Pros and Cons of Life in Wilmington
I love living in Wilmington, North Carolina. I do want to go through the pros and cons of life in Wilmington FOR YOU.
The real estate market in Wilmington NC is still strong, as this is a desirable place to live! Right along the coast in Southeastern North Carolina, full of rich history, beautiful architecture, shopping & dining and stunning beaches.
My name is Jan Roggeman. If you're interested in more information about the Wilmington NC area, whether you currently live here like I do, or you're hoping to, please feel free to reach out to me. I am a local Real Estate Agent who loves what I do, and the community in which I live and work. If you love North Carolina like I do, hopefully you find this video, and some of my others, to be helpful for you!
Take care and thanks for watching,

Great video, Jan!
Thank you.
Informative video. Thank you 👍🏻
All the beautiful greenery there. Also, the marshlands attract animals not normally seen in other parts
all gone-they hand picked some of the private gardens to show
Thanks so much!!! We appreciate your thoroughness with Wilmington Pros and Cons. We are looking to move that way from VT. We are accustomed to small coffee houses and yoga studios and locally owned shops. Could you recommend something right outside of Wilmington?
I sure can. Send me a message at jan@1stclasscoastalchoice.com with details and I'll give you a slew of ideas. I'm not sure if you're looking for a place to stay and look around the area or if you would like to live right outside of Wilmington with those features? 😀
No one ever mentions the bad water. Don't drink the tap water. ILM born & bred.
who cares? As long you have ice cold beer
I grew up in Wilmington and still have property in the area but have lived in Michigan for about 40 years. I get back there about a dozen times a year. As you noted it has slowly lost it's small town feeling. I've always attributed that to the influx of people from around the country moving there because of the wonderful place it was but then wanting to change it to more like what it was where they came from. Don't get me wrong, it's still a great place to live.
It's beautiful here with tolerable year round weather. As I've traveled all over the country, the growth and change aren't just isolated to Wilmington, but so many other amazing and beautiful remote places as well. It's so much easier for people to move to a better location with the ability to work remotely. I feel that's the biggest contributing factor to these migrations we've seen in the past 5 years.
I totally agree - We don’t need more videos about my area - it just brings awareness to us
I hear this complaint a lot -they want to change it, etc., but I never hear what have newcomers actually changed on purpose to be just like their hometowns??
I can imagine. I so loved NYC, but now it feels very different. I'm still trying to figure it all out. :)
@@janroggeman1stClass There will be always pros and cons to every place. It all depends on what one is looking for. :)))
The humidity is 983% in Wilmington today. 😂
🤣🤣🤣
Jan, I checked this place on Google Street View. The 2nd street is cute and green. The only drawback is the ugly wires on wood electric poles. However, this is a common problem everywhere 🥲. Thanks for the great video.
Wilmington local here, stay away from downtown, the houses are cute but it's a major hub for crime and overall ghettoness. Any numbered streets are going to be hit or miss. I recommend the right side of town, towards the beach rather than the left side of town (downtown)

Thanks for the info
I believe if you like electricity, you may need them.
@@robinm.1961 You may have heard some municipalities bury the lines?
Ive lived here my whole life, and im finally at the prime time to purchase a home and its like impossible
@andyfritter I completely agree with you. It's a very challenging time for buyers. There is seemingly nothing on the market for sale. Please shoot me an email or text if you have any questions that you want answered. I appreciate the support!
The housing issue I've noticed is not exclusive to NC. It'sall over the US and it's mainly companies and foreign investors buying housing and jacking up prices. No one else can afford these homes.
So true. It's everywhere.
Great video, thank you! Curious about the school system?
Sold, we’re moving there from Arizona ASAP!
Where in Arizona? Many beautiful places there.
i grew up here and when my daughter graduates HS im moving to AZ haha
Beautiful streets and homes. What streets are you walking on? We would like to check it out once we move into the new house.
Yeah, I would like to know the names of these green streets too 😊
This is around 2nd street between Ann and Church Street
I just visited Wilmington again this week and enjoyed the beach at Ft. Fisher. Wrightsville beach is $30 a day or $6 an hour to park. Why would I want to live close to the beach, if I have to pay everyday to use it? Ft. Fisher is free parking, but it's mixed with Cape Fear River water and isn't the clear pristine look of Wrightsville Beach.
Is the parking fee year around?
Great video - love the streets and style of filming!
Thank you!
We are considering a 5 year plan to move from CT. We have a window of opportunity at that point where my family would all be willing and able to relocate. My husband is self employed as a consultant in the medical device industry. My oldest is in the same field and my youngest will be a chiropractor. Parents are retired. CT is out of control expensive and dreary 5-6 months out of the year. We are all just tired of it. Quality of life matters. So we are trying to locate a place where we can settle multiple generations of our family where we can have better quality of living, more affordable housing, lower crime & good schools.
Oh, I understand you very well. We went through a similar experience. The decision is exciting, scary and rewarding. Have you visited the area?
We need to. My son just visited and loved it. We have to plan some trips to the places we have interest in and do some research. A close suburb with new construction in a nice community with some property is what we will be seeking. Are they building these homes to be more hurricane resistant, is there flooding, are there areas where crime rate is low?
@@MermaidBBW A new community is a great way to to make a move. Everybody is in the same situation, new to that development, and you'll find it easy to meet people. Building codes are enforced for our climate and weather. As for flooding, that is a question to ask per house or location. Some areas have higher risk. On property can be in a flood zone and the neighboring property not. In terms of crime, there are plenty of maps that provide statistics. You can easily search that information. I hope this helps!
Don’t move here and try to change it into the place you just left.
Interesting comment because my wife and I also had a five year plan to move to a warmer climate. Winters in Weston Ct were ridiculous. As beautiful as the town is, just couldn't handle the weather, the costs of living and a bunch or really snotty entitled people. We've now been in the Porters Neck area for 22 years. Suffered through hurricane Florence and hot and humid summers, but I wouldn't trade our life now for the one in CT for anything.
Invest in a good electric bike if you move to Wilmington, because to have to pay to park everywhere and the beach isn't cheap.
The beaches are free.
Carolina beach has big rocks
on the beach
we hauled them from Goldsboro..same with the jetty rocks at WB
Is it a good idea to put a tiny house in Wilmington
It's a good idea anywhere!
They have something called the cargo district, you may want to look into that.
Wasn't the Grimm series recorded from there also? It has the same vibes from that serie😂
I don't think so, but I know what you mean.
Looking for a tiny home lot for a home of 1 me on a safety area please
🙏 let me know
Why does Wilmington air smell bad? Recidents say the smell comes and goes? Why is the river along the riverwalk pitch black? Until the town does something about the air quality and water quality, I don't want to move there.
Because of the riegkewood paper plant and the river is polluted
That smell started in around 2008-it smells like the Jersey Turnpike-thats what happens with overcrowding.
The Fortron Plastics Plant in Wilmington has had a strong, "catty" smell since 1993. Paper mills also stink.

It's hot here from May until October.. July to September is hells front porch hot. The hospital is packed 24-7, violence has gone through the roof. This guy is brushing over a lot of the negatives. The small town vibe has been gone for a long time.
It's important to hear different opinions. So, thank you. ~ I feel things have changed everywhere, and not exactly for the better.
North Carolina is getting super expensive. The entire State. Where are all the good Doctors?
a lot of people have moved here, ruined the culture..brought their bad habits and poor attitudes..but a lot of people are also really nice and appreciate my home town, and add to it.
traffic is horrendous..rude yankee drivers galore.
@@GarlicMonoxide it's such a beautiful area that provides a lifestyle like no other. It would be amazing if all of the change and growth were positives. I've been here 10 years and still can't believe the changes taking place. I would love to chat with you and get your insight as to what changes you've experienced.
@@janroggeman1stClass been here almost my whole life..I'm 43.
You're correct..even in 10 years a LOT has changed.
Chat on the phone or..?
@@GarlicMonoxide I think it would be fun to meet in person and grab a coffee or something.
I moved here about four years ago, it’s funny as I have the same impression of the clueless North Carolina drivers. I surely didn’t bring a Northern attitude here, I left New Jersey to get away from Northerners and their insane Liberal politics. Unfortunately, there are too many of them moving here. They will eventually ruin this state, like they always do.
Cons of living in Massachusetts. Can’t afford anything
Yeah, I understand that! I've still got plenty of family in NY and they're in the same boat.
That's right Adam. I live in Boston area and searching Charleston and Wilmington
Im trying to come back home. I'm a Nurse in Georgia and I have an issue with Mama at TD Bank on South College. They said they paid me though she responded and they said she was rude.
See? Now that is what you call "staying on topic!" Good for you Monique!

USED to be a great place-now it is overrun with addicts. Homeless and illegals. It is the center of human trafficking between NY and florida( media doesnt report it due to tourism)
Beaches? Forget it-its all locked down by hedge fund McMansion for rental investors. 100k+ tourists and college kids trying to get on a beach with 10k (at most) $10 / hour parking spots.
Traffic is insane- since all the high density building with zero infrastructure investment.
Every available piece of land is being and has been stripped of greenery and built with high density rat boxes.
In the 90s-it was magazine articles (similar to this video) that proclaimed this place paradise-so everyone ran from what they voted for up north and on the west coast-and moved here only to vote for the same things.
Pollution-no fishing left...all there is is brewery's and apartments.
Well - show and advertizing our home town only will bring attention to us - Out of towner from other area have more money and bring all the crime and junk that goes alone with more people to our town - not good at all - at all - gosh -
Unless you're talking about high level drug gangsters, people with MORE money don't bring the crime, they avoid it like the plague. It's the homeless, the uneducated who can't find great jobs... poverty & lower education makes people desperate.
YANKS stay home
HI,NO passport,no money,Greetings from son of god turkish liras.
Oh..this guy is just another real estate agent-now the lies make sense.
Hey, thanks for the support!
It’s a nice area, but it’s way overdeveloped. The powers that be, have no issue with irresponsible development. The infrastructure is so far behind what is needed.
I lean towards agreeing with you. The infrastructure seems like an afterthought. But, it does take money to build out and I wonder if the powers that be could predict the incoming residents. Just thinking out loud here. LOL
@@janroggeman1stClass That’s the point, at some point you have to have some consideration for the existing residents. It’s nice to continually pad the pockets of the politicians and the developers, but it’s the residents that suffer. The traffic is horrible, it’s getting more difficult to make a doctors appointment… Irresponsible development.
