@@Ducky_Lucky Buddy I am like that with some of the latest additions to franchises, especially ones where they shoved polotics into it and fucked up the universe, like the Star Wars Wars Sequels, or Star Trek Discovery, or the new Doctor Who where I pretend Jodie Whittaker never happened and the 12th Doctor is still having time travel adventures.
@@remensviel2342 As I was watching the ending I was kind of hopeful that maybe they'd reboot the series, but thanks to Jim having his knowledge of future events, could unite the heroes sooner to deal with the many threats together. Cause I just started watching the series after hearing about the movie, and one thing the series lacked was team ups. But now that they made Toby the new Troll Hunter, it's fucked up, and all the development we saw in the series for characters is ruined because none of it will happen. Also, during Wizards, we see some of the heroes go back in time and join the battle of Kalihead Bridge, if the show ended at Wizards, we'd have one temporal paradox occur, but because Ji went back to the day he got the amulet and now Toby picked it up, this mean Jim and the others won't travel back in time to join the battle, so the events should be different, It's like they didn't pay attention to the logic of how time travel works.
*goes back in time with the full knowledge and skillset required to prevent every tragedy in the series, chooses to offload all responsibilty onto his incapable best friend like a boss*

Someone on the staff must have really like the finale of Mighty Max and decided to do their own version of it except it was way worse. At least Max still chose to be a hero.

Did Netflix intervene of something? Because this franchise was absurdly good, it had everything to be a second "Avatar the last airbender" because of how good and underrated it was, but now??? The franchise will be remembered with a shit ending
I fully believe Toby would make a terrible trollhunter. He was a good supportive character, but as a trollhunter? He can't even defeat Draal and Nomura.
And the only reason Jim survived in the first place in the first battle was because he had skills with a kitchen knife. Toby barely escaped by the skin of his teeth WITHOUT the heavy metal armor and sword. Toby probably would die.
Dude who cares its literal plot armor that's why Jim survived any of his fights. Tobey could do the same.

Toby wouldn't have survived Bular. The REAL Toby was in a very bad shape at the beginning of Trollhunters and there’s nothing wrong with that. The writers are PRETENDING that Toby will be like Jim. They ruined him. They ruined everything.

YES I thought about his slicing and kitchen skills as soon as the amulet went to Toby. I LOVE Tobes, but he doesn’t stand a chance. PLUS how would he feel, knowing everything, that Jim went back to make him the Trollhunter. I think Toby would have wanted his last wish of being his best friends saviour to be respected.
I LOVE how Aaron Waltke keep saying on Twitter that in the new timeline Jim would go on a quest to save everyone with Toby, restore their memories and that Jim will eventually get the new amulet again.

If they really have a good way to continue the story and salvage what was lost, then they should make it cannon within the show. Hey, maybe it will turn out even better for it. But they have to act on it and not leave it here.
There do where some complains about it being a different time line, one completely separated from the one Jim created, so it wouldn’t be time traveling, maybe connecting knowledge from another reality? That sounds op af
My biggest problem with the ending, is the consequences that this decision brings is about Strickler. As someone else pointed out, the only reason he didn’t kill jim in the beginning was due the relationship teacher-student they had, and then because he fell in love with Barbara. Also, that was a crucial step, because Jim had Strickler’s knowledge for the rest of the show, and information about certain enemies, and he also trained him a bit on fighting. Strickler has no reason to do that with Toby. Even if he falls for Barbara again, there is no reason to keep Toby alive 🤷🏻♀️
Ive been reading all these valid points but they are all missing the factor that time unfolds differently, is that time line, toby was able to reach the top of the rope and there is an episode in the series called unbecoming, a timeline where jim never tajes the amulet and he manages to turn strickler on his side

The real problem with Steve's pregnancy (apart from being deeply disturbing) is that it was clearly a clumsy way to cut him off from the main plot, which is sad, given his arc with Lancelot and, most importantly, "Toothache". I really wanted to see him shine with the others, instead of literally pooping babies

Steve was finally trained alongside THE knight of all knights and then instead of having him use those skills alongside his girlfriend who is also a trained warrior to make an epic moment… they sideline him for an uncomfortable MPreg plot line. At this point they were handed the material and they just decided to light it on fire and dance around it.

I'm not mad that the guy got pregnant I'm mad that there was definitely no consent here, this is kids having kids and it comes off super pro-life like they're just flippantly having kids all of a sudden, and he hasn't been told anything about it, all the information he manages to learn is very last minute/too late like it's no big deal
So, Jim is the first human trollhunter who managed to defeat everyone he faced off in just 2-3 years and leading the forces that defeated Morgana and Bellroc’s arcane order (on top of that he's the only trollhunter who survived), but history won't remember him because everything is erased? Nice.

That aspect of it I like. It's like with the Hero of Time in the Zelda franchise. However, passing on that responsibility to his best friend? I don't like that.
I love how absolutely nobody mentions that toby being the trollhunter will ruin the timeline even more than before if we refer to Wizards

The ending completely invalidated everything. I really liked the series but I hated this film.
I think people misunderstand what this movie ment for series. It didn't invalidate if it was going to happen again. Jim just became the ultimate adviser.
He knew toby would be better for the role so he went back into the past with his knowledge to set up the future better.
Stictler and Clair were just a couple stops of many.

maybe in real life its okay to reset the time and shoulder all the responsibilities because no one knows what happen except for you.. but in movie or a fictional story, resetting the time is never be a good idea even if it is for a good reason..

Yeah, Toby always had those moments like when Claire's brother was stolen he tried to justify that it wasn't a goblin, and only mostly breaks through that after character development, when it was Jim's choice to act, Toby had to go along but now he doesn't even have to. Plus Jim should've gone around again because he knows how to avoid everyone's deaths, he's seen it all.
Also if they even GET to the Titans and Jim dies, they're kinda screwed. And if anyone crucial dies before they get there... screwed.

Guillermo del Toro says Jim “knows I am the Trollhunter, with or without the amulet” and that if the amulet is meant to return to him, it will. This was said in a Q&A in LA.

One of my main problems with this movie was that most of the character deaths should have been emotional, and yet they were only talked about for a couple scenes before they move on, which I feel is the problem with putting too many character deaths in one movie: It's a lose-lose situation. Either you spend too much time focusing on all the dead characters and not on the plot, or you don't have time to spend time mourning over them, and it just feels rushed. That combined with the fact that they cast way too many characters aside, makes me feel that this would've really benefited from them making it into a limited series like Wizards, which would've allowed them to spend more time with other main protagonists, and more time focusing on the dramatic weight of the character deaths.
Exactly! The deaths just weren’t done well in my opinion. And example being Douxie legit lost the closest people to him and their like “let’s give it a few seconds aaaaand- done next scene and don’t bring up how the death hurts him/the group”

@@melit. I agree. However I do feel the deaths were necessary to establish the tone of the movie and really show how dangerous the titans were and how much they were risking to fight it. Which made it all the more amazing when they defeated the titans.

We all know that when toby becomes the troll hunter he'll be killed almost immediately during his first serious fight. Jim was lucky to barely survive due to his quick reactions and hefty agility to balance out against everytime he was knocked around. Even with training, toby struggles to even swing his light weight war hammer so imagine using the sword against a troll going at you at full force? Instantaneous bloody death

Rewatch the show and tell me how will Toby beat all of those agile or aggressive af villans when he can barely lift his weapon even with augmentations to make it lighter bro. Not to mention the troll hunter armor and weapon can't be altered except to fit your body. Even Jim sometimes struggles to use it even with all his training

I’ve loved the franchise for years and just to have it end that way with him erasing all of his progress and not even that, but giving Toby the amulet honestly ruined the whole thing for me
I pretend that during wizards, Vendel actually pulls out the shard, further slowing the spread when he returns to his time, and our Acardidian friends put him into stasis. Claire goes into the shadow realm sooner, gets through to the king's soul, purifying Excalibur, healing Jim. Aja then sends her spaceships to help battle the Arcane order with everyone else while Krel and the other Acaridians work on changing the wormhole generator so that the final destination is the end of the universe. Together, everyone forced the Arcane order through this Wormhole that leads to the end of time and traps them there. Aja and Steve get their reunion, there are fewer deaths, and most importantly, Toby does not become the Troll hunter. Everyone gets to shine at what they're good at, Merlin gets proven wrong for once, and previous events are not meaningless. It would be even better if Aja and Krel lend Jim their "turn into a human for 12hs a day" tech (can't remember what it's called) so that he can be his old human self during the day, and his half troll self at night (when there is no deadly sun).
They want to make everyone matters, but ended up DESTROYED the whole franchise

I was so sure Jim was gonna time travel back to the BEGINNING OF THE MOVIE. to like, make minor changes to make sure no one died or something. I was so sure of that, that I was actually super happy when he destroyed the khronisfere!

Yeah I thought the same personally I liked the movie I thought it was good I even liked the ending to a degree as it sets up for us to see how good jim can really be and how many people he can call out that we’re Changlings my only issue was that he didn’t grab the Amulet I thought everything else was great I just don’t understand why he’d put the world in jeopardy by doing that

And I want to point out if tobey story is the same as Jim’s, he’s condemned the man to death and becoming a troll and losing everyone he loves.

The problem with the ending wasnt as a whole, it was just how they handled a good portion of the side-cast. Eli showed back having gone through puberty and that was all we got and Strickler and Nomura felt like they sorta just died randomly. I could write a whole essay on what was so wrong about Steve's character in that movie; seriously after 3 series of development that was how they gave him a send off?
Personally, I kinda liked the fact that they had the balls to kill Toby. That alongside Nari were the only two who felt like they had an impact.
The ending sucks. Period. They had a good thing going with Jim rewinding time back to the beginning, and they could have had him get the amulet a second time and fix mistakes while making new ones. Instead they had Toby get it for no reason. Like seriously, out of all the people I dont see how Toby was the one to get it; sure he's a great character but his character does not make him the noble, sacrificing type that Jim was for Trollhunters. They could have made Eli, Steve, Claire, or even Barbara get the amulet and that would have worked great.
Overall, the movie was okay (except Steve) and then plummeted into an abyss at the end.
I 100% agree! like the part with toby, I would much rather have him die than the WHOLE story reset. sure, it would probably end the series because one of the main-side characters dies and I would enjoy that ending.
No one has actually said Jim doesn't have his amulet anymore. Who knows, maybe they will transform like Sailor Moon and girls in every episode: for the glory of Merlin/for the glory of all Daylight is mine to command!
And yeah, I do think there will be a new season or a few. This ending looks like a hook for the future. Otherwise there would be no better "bitter-sweet" ending than saving the world, paying a high price for it.
Idk about Barbara Lake cause she is an adult and she can protect Jim, Eli on the other hand could be a possibility, I mean from a loser to a popular kid in 3 Below is pretty good to show that he is worthy of the amulet

Personally I think that Toby dying was a bad idea. Out of all the characters I think that Toby should be the last person to pick for a heroic death.
It took me a minute to realise that they actually killed him when it happened. It just didn’t feel right for me…
He was always this funny adorable best friend with the purest soul and I feel like his death is to harsh for his character arc (and for a kids show)
But I still would have preferred if they went with this tragic ending instead of going back in time…
I love Toby and I think they really nailed his character because he was the funny, clumsy best friend but they still managed to show his worth.

Dude I just Discovered the trilogy 3 days ago, and now I can't be more disappointed with the conclusion. Man I can't even imagine the feelings of those who waited years just to see this majestic franchise end wonderfully, now that they see that the author's decided to throw it all away.
All they had to do was delete the last 15 mins of the movie and replace it with Toby's funeral.

They ignored characters, and several fan service opportunity’s only for them to give us a power of friendship arc followed by “oh, you know this show that you love very much because of its story? Yeah well it doesn’t matter anymore, goodbye.” It irks me!
The ending was AWFUL. If they had ended with Jim finding the amulet again and/or at least and ending scene/frame showing that they ended up together and all survived that would have been fine. But to erase EVERYTHING?!
Actually that in itself is an interesting thing, I don't think of it as "destiny is meaningless" in the trolls series many times its said that toby would be a good trollhunter too. and the movie Jim says that what made him the troll hunter was that he was a hero to start with.
It could be entirely possible that at some point Jim helps resolve the aliens problems early which helps them create another trollhunter amulet, letting jim be a second trollhunter at the same time as toby. With his knowledge of events he may have just felt he no longer needed the power of the amulet to still be the hero. not that he gave the roll to someone else. As well merlin only showed him what would have happened if he had no knowledge of the amulet and if he hadn't picked it up. this merlin of this timeline may also be self aware this is a different Jim. Destiny is not a set path, fate is, and people often confuse the 2, destiny is taking different paths that inevitably lead to set events. all that matters is what events stay the same, not how you get there.
It was still a dumb movie. but I chose to see it in a brighter light.
Right, that was my take on it too. Not the fact that time travel was involved. Because inevitably, having knowledge of the future itself would cause ripple effects on how things would play out and is not a guarantee of a happy ending, just a chance. Or that it kind of put the series into a loop, but the fact that Jim just dropped everything he had spent the entire series being responsible for and left it to toby... WHILE reciting a Shakespearean monologue about destiny and the weight of responsibility being something that creates greatness in a hero and not to shy away from... But then he just ditched all that responsibility. Like WTF. There were just too many specific points throughout the series where Jim being the trollhunter is what gave him access to powers to save people, or get through certain situations. And let's be honest, at the time he finds the amulet Toby would not be in decent enough shape to survive his first fight against a troll.
And also maybe they could have just gone back a few hours NOT a whole dam year and I think they knew they would go back to the start cause claire said "don't ever stop trying till Iove you".
Including lives. Literally lives.

I just really want to know what they were thinking when they made Toby the trollhunter. Like you said it was Jim’s destiny Merlin literally said that out of all the creatures in our worlds I chose you.
In my opinion here’s two possible endings that I have in mind
First of all they said the amulet doesn’t make mistakes then why did it choose Toby? So basically I would’ve changed the ending to Toby finding the amulet but the amulet won’t choose Toby but Jim will have it so the story line would make sense.
Secondly Jim wouldn’t need to go back all the way to the start he would’ve just went back before the titans rises or maybe when douxie and nari were in the train, Jim would’ve stop all those deaths because most deaths have happened in the rise of titans.
In my opinion not sure if the first one would work out but the second one will. (Btw heads up it’s in my opinion so if u disagree that’s fine)

I actually read that they were planning to have the characters go to college at the end instead of resetting everything. They scrapped that idea because they thought it was a cheap cop out. What a mistake that was.

I just finished the movie 5 minutes ago. I feel stupid for wasting my tears on Toby since they were just going to rewind time and forget that timeline existed. Terrible ending.

I expected, due to the amount of character deaths, that time would be reversed; but to make it an absurd “and it was all a dream~” kind of time-warp bullshit ending was tragic.

I felt fine with the movie up until Toby picked up the amulet. I could live with the reset, but there are many hard decisions Jim had to make as the Trollhunter. While it has been shown that Jim doesn't need the amulet to be the Trollhunter and a hero, I don't feel that he would give Toby the burden of making those decisions, even though he would do his best to guide him.
I HATED Toby with a firy burning passion. But that aside it’s literally shown in Trollhunters what happens if Draal became troll hunter. Every one dies to Gunmar!! Toby made one ONE good choice the entire series and it got him killed, you really expect us to all be happy to see him become troll hunter? He was a joke of a character the whole time. It erased all the relationships too. You think Blinky and Jim will have the same relationship? Will Claire even join the team is it’s Toby leading it?! Gosh I wish I had just stopped the movie after Toby died. It was actually a beautiful end.
I don't hate Toby buy kinda disliked how he was the comidic side character who only got Arch's sometimes and then next day they'd be gone. I do agree with everything else you've said though, Toby being troll Hunter is friking stupid and they should've let him die. It would have a lot more impact and have the lesson that you can't just reset time because sacrifices have to be made.
I thought I'm the only one feeling this way. I don't necessarily 'hate' Toby but I find him VEEERRYY ANNOYING at times -_-
The fact that everyone constantly tells Jim, you can't choose who becomes a Trollhunter just completely got thrown to the trash tbh with the end. Toby pushed to find the amulet alone and somehow he gets it instead? What happened to destiny? I love Toby and Claire, but from seeing them in the show for so long, knowing their skills, weaknesses, personalities, neither of them feel like they fit the role of Trolllhunter. I agree with other people when they say, Jim could of rewound time and just tried again, prevent disaster with newfound knowledge earlier. The same exact thing is gonna happen, the titans will rise again, for sure. They'll prevent too much issue, quicker, but it didn't mean Toby had to be the Trollhunter for it to happen... It felt like a movie full of plot holes and just rushed moments that I couldn't even feel fully sad when any of the characters died...
at least...Claire is far far far better than Toby
It would have still kept the ship sailing with Jim and she might have been able to make use of dark magic and being a knight...or have Jim be the sorcerer and her the knight. But nopes, they chose Toby (=_=) so disappointing

not exactly. in unbecoming it said if jim didn't find the amulet, Draal would have become the troll hunter, which does kind of establish that the amulet can choose a hunter if the person is worthy in the first place.
in this timeline toby finds the amulet before nightfall before the amulet has to run away from bular or be found by draal.
It chose Draal because Jim went back to get it.

Unbecoming was such a beautiful episode and Anton Yelchin poured his heart delivering everything. This film just throws it all away. Massive middle finger to everyone.

My head cannon: Toby dies, and they all mourn his death like they do in the movie. They then go back to Camelot and talk about their victory, but their losses that came with it. They give their salutations to all of the losses that occurred. It then shows futures for the rest of the characters and how they deal with their loss. Jim is with Claire and Barbara, Jim maybe even getting therapy, Arrrgghhh and Blinky are also still with them, Eli, Steve, Aja, and Varvatos go to Achiridian 5 and Steve and Aja are taking care of their kids, Douxie stays in Camelot and it take him a lot longer to mourn than the rest because of the many more losses that have just occurred to him. (Perhaps Douxie might have to have some therapy as well from losing Merlin, Archie, and Nari) They are all living happily, even if they had losses, and role credits.
I wish they had an ending more like this but we all have dreams. I really loved this franchise and I loved the movie up to the end. I like what you brought up in the video, and also, there was literally an episode of Trollhunters where Jim says *“I am the Trollhunter, Amulet or not”* It kind of ticked me off when they completely ignored that entire story line and made Jim weak, and asking “am I still the trollhunter without the amulet?” That just took almost all of his story and growth as a character and threw it out of the window.
And about Aja, her being so cold and saying things like that might be an effect from her being the queen and having to change her mindset. Of course I don’t know for sure but that’s just what I personally think. But she still should’ve had more screen time and a more 3Below accurate personality, as well as the rest of the 3Below characters, as they were completely underused throughout the whole story.
And finally about Douxie, I think that he should’ve had a much more prominent role in the movie. He was extremely underused, as he was able to fight both Belroc and Skrael at once, but in the movie he couldn’t fight either with out help. I think that he should’ve been there to help or kill either one of the arcane order. Seeing him sitting on the lines waiting for the others to do all the work was kind of sad, because of seeing all of the things that he did throughout the series. Again, I liked the movie aside from these things.
Another thing about the ending, that makes me confused, If tones is the trollhunter how does anything happen correctly? Tobey was the scared wimp of the group so how is he supposed to kill bular? LET ALONE GUNMAR. And also, how will Tobey figure out about the changlings? What will happen to Tobey in the end? When the Arcane order finally arrive who will go back in time? What will happen with Blinky and Arrggghhh? Will Blinky get closer with Tobey and Arrggghhh with Jim? Will Blinky and arrggghhh even train Tobey? Tobey will have to tell Jim about the trolls and troll market, and he isn’t the best at keeping secrets so will he spill to other people? Will Tobey be killed by Bular as soon as it turns nighttime? Will the changlings ever even figure out it’s Tobey? Jim goes into Strickler office and that his he figures out? What does Angor do? Is he rendered completely useless? What about Morgana? Would she have anything to do with the story? Without Angor would Claire be relevant? The eternal night wouldn’t happen because... Sorry for all the questions. I could go on.
If you got all the way here thanks for reading this. I kind of ranted in that last paragraph... but oh well.
Edit: Something I just thought about. So Jim is talking about “is he worthy” the entire movie, but what about Toby? He saying “I’m just the sidekick I don’t do anything” but if my memory serves me right, Toby is a very important part in defeating Angor, Morgana, and a less important part in practically every other villains death. So they both need to give themselves more credit.
My head cannon was this: skip ahead 18 or 23 years later or something like that.
I really did enjoy this movie until the end it just threw everybody's character development out the window and the completely threw Jim's development out the window too.
This movie had stunning animation funny moments and the characters are as great as ever, but what saddens me it that the relationship between Jim and Claire was erase.
Jim and Claire wouldn't be the same if Jim isn't the trollhunter anymore because he saved her brother and that was what made Claire fall in love with Jim.
Sorry if this is too confusing I'm very bad at explaining things. But what I'm trying to say is that Jim and Claire's relationship won't be the same if Jim isn't the trollhunter

I just want to say, I think Steve's weird mpreg arc would've been way funnier if he didn't actually get pregnant (because he's human and their DNA really wouldn't be compatible in that way) but was convinced he was pregnant instead. My main problem is like you said. They spend the whole movie hyping Jim up that he's the trollhunter and when he finally believes that he was meant to be the trollhunter, he gives it to Toby. It was just really bad writing on their part.
All the time while I was watching the movie, I figured that the chronosphere would have been used to simply revert time on the planet and to repair it from the desolation that the titans wrought as well as revive those who were lost in the fight. While it's not the best ending and what I figured was predictable, it's a better solution than "lets pretend NOTHING happened."

I was already not okay with the fact that there is only one season of wizards and felt like his story could have easily been stretched into two seasons (Wizards seemed kinda rushed at some points).
And he was almost useless in the movie!

One movie was just to short for all those characters. They should have made two seasons of wizards and a miniseries instead of the movie.

In the episode Mistrial and Error, Jim was stripped of his troll hunter duties to show him what would happen if someone else was the TrollHunter. What happened was 1. The world ended and 2. Jim realized he wanted to be the TrollHunter. THAT was literally set in stone. Why in the world did the creators change what was set in stone to this? Also, Tobie already had his character arc, No one thinks of him as useless. Maybe the aliens but they don't know him as everyone else does. I'm fine with them killing him cause they did it really well, but like he said in the video. They missed some things by the mile.

actually, jim didnt just go back in time, he went to a different dimension of sorts (I dont know everything about it as its not said in the movie) you can tell because of all the differences in the end scene like how jim got up at 8:00 am instead of 6:00 am

i marathoned the whole Tales of Arcadia series with my boyfriend, having a great time with the stakes, fun moments, enjoyable characters and so on... and the movie wasn't even bad but the ending just leaved me with a bad taste in my mouth, man..
I really liked the movie until the end, so I just changed the ending. In my head, Jim honored Toby's death, and there's a giant statue of Tobias in Arcadia. And Toby finally goes to real paradise, where Merlin and Morgana went into. I would've loved if the ending was like that, and they showed us the lives of the characters all grown up, working, and out of school. I also think they would have added all of the characters together and written them a lot better, if they made it a season four short series, at least they would've had more time than 1 hour.
I fee like if they wanted to do the whole "Time Travel Fix" ending they should have altered to where Jim just goes back to before the others start being killed and intervening saving them and then ultimately saving Toby at the end as well...Then the others watch as Time Travel Jim fades away due to the paradox correcting itself

The movie should have ended where Jim learned to move on and what it truly means to be a hero (don't think, become) . Yes, they saved the world... But at what cost? OR if they really wanted to do the time travel thing, they could have had the Arcane Order win: with Balrog unlocking the power and the world being destroyed by fire. THEN Jim could have used the time power as the world crumbled around him BUT JUST TO GO BACK TO THE START OF THE MOVIE. Or they didn't have to kill Toby at all: it was just for shock value and I didn't even shed a tear because I JUST KNEW they were going to reverse it. They could have won, had a hug as they pulled Toby from the rubble, then mourned the loss of all the others who died (and hold a funeral for all of them, as we were even robbed of that). Look, I don't want Toby (or other great characters like Strickler) to die, but sometimes you NEED the emotional weight of character deaths in a movie with stakes like this, without reversing all the sacrifices and character development of THE ENTIRE SERIES. Sorry to rant, but the ending was really disrespectful to the fans and unfaithful to the themes of the series. :/

And yeah, Steven getting pregnant was so weird and awkard. He's a TEEN, and he and Asia aren't even super serious (plus half the fandom prefers Steve x Eli over them). And why make him go through all that to reverse everything right after? Jim straight up killed his children! They really wasted Steve's character, anyway. He had such good development and potential, but was wasted on comic relief. Rip.
Toby's death was well-executed and they should've wrapped up there. Jim letting Toby get the amulet (and it actually choosing him) not only goes against everything they established, but sets Toby up for near immediate death, or at the very least DRASTICALLY changes how everything plays out, and I personally believe it will turn out WAY worse.
I hated that ending so much. It was so deeply upsetting because I love that show and wanted to see everyone in the future having kids and telling their stories. It sucks that they retconned such an amazing story.
I thought that Wizards was setting up Steve to actually help out in this movie beyond the first scene. I thought that the whole Steve storyline was really weird and unecessarry.

I know we're suspending disbelief because it's fantasy, but male pregnancy makes zero sense. Where would the babies gestate? In his intestines? They were trying to be funny, but it falls flat if you think about it longer than .2 seconds.

I agree with the fact that the ending tainted the entire series. Because it did, no matter what some try to say, I'll never be able to watch the show the same. I'm going to try and delete this movie from my mind, but I don't know if I'll be able to. I could rant about the ending for hours, honestly. It leaves so much to question, like: Does Blinky become Toby's father figure, and Aaarrrgghh becomes Jim's wingman? I know, it sucks to think about it. Also, would Darci become the Claire this time around? Or would she not, because Toby doesn't particularly crush on anyone until the mole in S1xE15. What about Draal? He's Jim's friend in the series, I mean, he dedicated Gunmar's murder to him, but now Draal would protect Toby's home, wouldn't he? Or would he not since Jim knows where the Goblins' nest it?
GRAHHHHHHHH I HATE, HATE, HATE THIS ENDING. And the more times I watch the movie the more I hate it. It's so unsatisfying of an ending, it's so open-ended that there is nothing that clenches the thirst of the Arcane Order. It also doesn't fit Jim's character to give the amulet to Toby as he gave him so much trauma, then again, I thought it was Jim's destiny to hold the amulet, not first-come, first-served? And if that were the case, the BLINKY WOULD BE THE ONE TO BECOME THE TROLLHUNTER BECAUSE HE WAS THERE WATCHING. HE SAW JIM GET THE AMULET!
I'll have to think of the ending like this: Jim gave Toby the amulet to assure his best friend's safety. And when Toby's the Trollhunter, Jim does everything in his power to give Toby the easiest Trollhunting job, he makes sure Toby never has to become a half-troll and that the group never goes back in time. But when the time comes, I think Jim would be the one to die as Toby did, he'd sacrifice himself in the end.
Though, if you want to go with that theory, would Toby go back in time to save Jim's life? If so, wouldn't Jim already know about the amulet as it's his timeline? So he wouldn't fall for the "Let's take the canals" or the "Take the canal Jim, you might find something exciting." and in that case, wouldn't Draal get the amulet next? So Unbecoming would become a reality, only this time it's real and not Merlin's magic! SEE THE ENDING F----S EVERYTHING UP!

I mean it has to do with the whole "destiny is a gift" saying throughout the franchise. Jim completed his hero arc, and now he's giving the chance to become a hero to Toby. That whole speech says everything. And the amulet chose Jim at first because Kanjigar didn't want Draal to have that burden. So it chose Jim instead. The amulet can also see through timelines, so it honored Jim's wishes and chose Toby.
My biggest problem with the ending is that it robbed us of a proper sendoff for almost every character. I mean... Jim was the only one who got any sort of closure.

Look, I was so so so SO mad about them killing off Toby but I would rather it have stayed that way than get this shitty ass ending. Toby is one of my favourite characters but I would rather it had ended with like a ‘two years later’ sorta thing with like them mourning over Toby and the other dead characters and then we get to see their future lives. I wouldn’t have been totally fine with that, but it’s still BETTER. Like ughhhh.

Honestly everything about this! The film just felt like a smack in the face for the people who have been watching it and investing for years. They did such good character arch’s and then just wiped them all away. Clare is the perfect example. She became such a boss over the course of the seasons, an awesome female character in what started as a pretty male driven show. But it ends with her losing all that and being reduced to just Jim’s love interest. Plus the whole thing with Toby was so frustrating. So the amulet didn’t need Jim, anyone could pick it up and BOOM troll hunter. I was expecting they would go back in time, but I was thinking it would be to like the beginning of the film, maybe Jim changes things up and let’s Toby go all hero and holds off the baddies while he makes sure the lever is pulled at the right time. But then he woke up at home and it all imploded. Sorry, end of rant.

I really didn't mind most of the movie until the reset, I honestly really liked it til then. Sure, Jim was kinda whiney about the whole "am I really the trollhunter without the amulet?" but I mean, I think that mainly came from the fact that, against such a powerful enemy, he was just a weak human punching bag, he had no weapon nor armor to protect him really and was taking too much damage to be useful while the other humans at least had armor. I don't think Claire simply got reduced to the love interest because her teleportation was so key, especially with the massive teleport that lead to 2 titans being killed, realistically draining her power. I think, had it ended at Toby's death and maybe a bit of an epilogue, it would've been a perfect end for me.
But then they made Toby take the amulet to change everything??? We've already seen what happens without Jim being the Troll Hunter once, and instead when Draal gets the amulet, but even with Draal's fighting capabilities the world ends far sooner. And then there's the other timeline mishaps that would occur, like how the ENTIRE fight at killahead bridge and the first troll hunter, even the amulet successfully being formed was reliant on jim, claire, douxie, and steve going back in time, which would never happen with Jim not being the trollhunter. They had an ENTIRE SEASON dedicated to how crucial the timeline is and how they put everything into motion by going into the past, it completely erases everything if that doesn't happen??

The entire ending is like a puzzle piece without all the pieces. So many things just left with no explanation and it was a huge bummer. The biggest offender to me is how Toby became the trollhunter tbh. Hated everything about the ending and extremely disappointed.
The movie also suffered from a pacing issue. Trollhunters was made for a serialized format, and there wasn't enough time to make use of the story's strengths in a movie timeframe.

Okay so here how to fix the movie :
1.Get rid of whining Jim. He already had an arc in Trollhunters where he state "amulet or not I'm the Trollhunter.". Have him crumble under the weight of the people he is losing throughout the movie instead. Having him doubt himself because the world is ending and he is losing friends one by one would be way more powerful than because he lost his magical girl powers.
2. Have Nomura die when they try to get Nari back before the Titans awakening. The deaths need to be more and more meaningful as the movie goes, the way she died was so anti-climatic and that whole fight was pointless.
3.During the ice Titan attack, have Jim board the Titan with Strickler. The cable get teared off and they fall on the titan's leg, not the ground. Aja come to their rescue Jim get in her ship but ice fall and Strikler can't get on. Aja try to come closer again but the bombs are about to go off, Strikler decide to fly the bomb up to the Titan while Aja and Jim are calling him to come back. Jim wants to go stop him but Aja decides to get them to safe distance from the bombs. Explosion, the ship is sent crashing on the ground. Aja and Jim watch the Titan fall and reconstruct from there.
This raise up the stakes of the conflict between Aja and Jim, he resent her for not stopping Strikler, she think he can't make the right calls in difficult situations.
4.Have Barbara quit the fight instead of sending Jim off like her pet died or something, the death of her fiance is a big shock and she can't go on.
5. Have Douxie present to get the Chronosphere. This way you can have a touching goodbye with his familiar.
6.Have Douxie run right away once Nari is dead. I hate this scene where he just put his hands on his head and Claire and Jim are like "Nari no..." it really killed the moment. She is important to Douxie, we don't care how the other react (especially when the reaction is that weak). Have him run right away to show his distress and make a nice call back to the scene where Nari start running before anyone else when he fell from the flying fortress in Wizards.
7.Have the earth be evacuated by Akaridians, so that Steve and Eli have something to do. (get rid of the pregnancy arc and have them work with Krel on the evacuation plans)
8. Have the very last fight with Lava god be with Jim, Aja and Douxie instead of just Jim. They are the main fighter characters, they should win with a team attack.
9.Use the chronosphere to bring Toby back to life, maybe make that he passes his right to the trollhunter powers in the process.
If you really want a similar ending to the movie, make it so he is the one to go back in time, not Jim, so he can try help him get things done better.
Or just go back in time at the beginning of the movie so Jim can stop all the death from happening.
Or better yet have the chronosphere show Toby that the fight will be lost and that's why he sacrifice himself, allowing us to keep the chronosphere arc, ending on Toby's death and having a nice callback to Nari who knew the sacrifice needed to win.
10.End on a freaking funeral for those who died. And conclude the show nicely.

I came into this movie having near zero expectations.

i didn't watch Wizards and went for it since I saw a couple of spoilers.
Meaning I literally couldn't have had any hope for the movie that I could've compared to something I imagined.
Yet every fucking death I was more and more Dissapointed.
PEOPLE DIED, Main characters died here yet nothing absolutely nothing came from it.
It was purely plot driven with no character input whatsoever, the plot made the characters do shit instead of the characters doing shit that is THE PLOT.
The whole movie is flawed in every way except for visuals.

i had watched the series over and over again but never knew about the rise of titans movie until recently. i was literally crying because the ending was so bad. like they just destroyed the show ive been watching for years.
1. I now firmly believe that Jim will be the next villain. That was the most selfish act he could do, making sure only him and his Mom were happy. THEN LIKE A VILLAIN!!! He gave the tragic burden of Trollhunter to his best friend, refuses to save and redeem the evil trolls, refuses to tell his girlfriend the truth, breaks his promise on making everything right, refuses to help and change Palchuck and other side characters, refuses to save Merlin, refuses to help the Aliens and their planet which he could have saved, and walks away from it all with a shrug and a smile on his face. A true Villain.
2. I was also most disappointed in Palchuck's character. His character was progressing naturally then the writer's purposely held him back in the Camelot Arc. And you could tell they held him back!!! Like a fool I held out hope that he would change then was devastated that he never did.
I just realized that, in the end, Jim made almost exactly what the arcane order was trying to do: reset everything for a new beginning

I personally loved the ending.
Ok, the reveal that Strickler miraculously survived the explosion but lost his wings was a little cheesy, but I loved the part after the final battle where the town of Arcadia holds a candlelight vigil in honor of Nari, Toby, and Nomura. The epilogue was really sweet where Jim, Claire, Blinky, and Aaarrrgghh have a heartfelt discussion about their fallen allies. My favorite part was after the discussion when Claire grabbed Jim’s hand and pulled him out onto the dance floor because the epilogue was Barbara and Strickler’s wedding reception and all the other characters start joining in on the dancing as the screen fades to black.
No, don’t tell me that didn’t happen. That is exactly how it ended and I will not be told otherwise.
I suggest that we should all erase the canon ending and think about this headcanon really hard so we can all create a matrix where we can have our deserved finale

Toby’s heroic death means nothing because of the ending. It negates his sacrifice! So frustrating! All my kids are into the shows right now, and I saw the movie ending with one of my kids. The ending is driving me crazy. It’s definitely hard to watch the show now and not get irritated. I’m just going to act like they let Toby die, because that’s how it should have been.
I just binged the entire Tales of Arcadia collection, only to find out that I had done it for nothing, kinda hurt, and as an aspiring filmmaker it's honestly a little eye opening to what people don't like to see, as well as watching an entire universe be torn down by the fact that even though Jim said that heroes are supposed to bear burdens, he chose to change fate and possibly kill Toby off sooner, just heartbreaking tbh
but I'm glad people aren't just being cruel to the creators and are just discussing it as friendly banter and rants, because there are some franchises that have been destroyed by fandoms and I hope it doesn't come to that with this one

Ignoring characters is good sometimes, especially with a loaded cast like this one. But I don't see why it had to be a movie release, aside from budget needed to render those titans. I mean, good lord did the nature titan look good.

The worst part is that they already did this far better in a single episode. In season 3 of the original Trollhunters show Jim loses faith in the amulet and throws it away after he his put in prison by his own allies in Trollmaket, and Vendral is killed by Ursala. Merlin through the amulet gives Jim a vision of what would’ve happened had Drall been picked for the Amulet instead. Everything was far worse and Gunmar won. But even when the world crumbled around him Jim refounded his will to fight as he wouldn’t stand to let this happen to the world he’s come to love. Amulet or no amulet he will fight to his last breath against Gunmar.
They did all that in a single episode. It was better written, far more subtle, and didn’t do the whole “Am I really still the Trollhunter?” bs. Of course he’s still the Trollhunter, but in this alternate reality how could he still be the Trollhunter without the Amulet? And in the actual reality where everything has just been flipped on its head, how can he still claim to be the Trollhunter when he’s failed so miserably?
The question in the episode was never “is” he still the Trollhunter, the question was how. How could he still be the Trollhunter when he’s let everything come to this? And how could he still fight against Gunmar without his Amulet? It was so much better, much less hand-fisted, and much more satisfying to watch than the forced arc we see throughout the movie.

certainly that episode really focused on the fact that jim had to be the troll hunter and the episode focused on that, on jim finally accepting his mantle and it was very respectable.
and in the movie it makes sense that jim feels that way because in the opening scene he gets beaten up and almost dies for the millionth time so at least they give jim a reason to feel that way, at least he does what he can to help and i like that because if he spent the whole time moping about "am i still the troll?" that would have been very disappointing.
and I'm talking about the movie without the ending, the ending let's pretend it doesn't exist and yes I know I'm latin but I still wanted to comment my opinion besides it's fun to talk to people from other countries.

@@theangel5461 well that’s what the movie kinda feels like. Him just moping the entire movie. And the focus on him being the Trollhunter is all about his armor and his weapons, not the actual skills he’s acquired from being the Trollhunter. And it never really feels like he lost his mojo because things happen to him that even a fully armored Jim wouldn’t be able to fair better. Like with Strickler’s sacrifice. One of the big low moments in the film, and it’s not even Jim’s fault. Even if he did have the armor he would’ve just turned it off to glide down faster, and all they had to do was follow the Titan. But instead they went the OPPOSITE direction for no reason, which caused the rope to snap. And even at the beginning of the movie he nearly manages to draw a tie between him and the strongest Magic God. He only lost because he was separated from his team and overwhelmed. And also what was with that scene afterwards where Claire asks if Jim is okay, specifically in a way that sounds like she doesn’t know what’s going on, despite the fact that the movie makes it clear that it’s one of Claire’s shadow portals that saves Jim? The movie puts Jim in situations where he would obviously lose, and even half-Troll Jim would have trouble with, and say “Wow he really needs his armor back, is he really even the Trollhunter?” Despite him putting up a very good fight and yaknow SURVIVING AGAINST A LITERAL GOD IN ONE ON ONE WITH NOTHING BUT A GLOWSTICK. He clearly has all the skills of the Trollhunter by the fact that he’s simply not dead, and even if he did have the armor he’d still be way in over his head as even Troll Jim wasn’t able to be Morgana in a one on one. But a physically weaker Jim with no armor was able to nearly go one on one with the strongest Magic God. That’s impressive so I really don’t know why the movie is trying to paint this picture that Jim is some weakling now, despite his major moments of failure wouldn’t be helped if he had armor or not, and Strickler’s death was something that was completely out of his control. I wish they just stopped at the original Trollhunters show.

excuse me, how did he draw with bellroc? in the fight, the guy is hit and wounded several times and he doesn't take just one hit, besides, at that moment bellroc wasn't as powerful as he was when they got on the titan, and when he goes to claire, she doesn't ask him if he's ok because she already knows, she just went to see him and that's it, the castle going in the opposite direction is true it was a bad idea when they could have followed him, but they decided to slow down to try to stop the titan, jim in this movie was never in control of the situation besides as i said bellroc was a god when the titan woke up not before.
To me I think and this is my theory, that what Jim did was create a Perfect Paradox, in which like an infinity ♾ symbols.
The staring point for when Jim goes back in time and Toby becomes the troll hunter until that same point where I think Jim would be in his shoes and sacrifices his life only for Toby to go back in time to restart everything.
Each time the amulet getting passed to Either Jim or Toby, in the time line creating a perfect paradox.
In other words Jim lives out his adventures rewinds time for Toby to find the amulet live his adventures and vise versa.
Oh boy that would be a headache. But, What what an interesting take. 🤔
The biggest problem with the time travel ending is that they never give a good enough reason for why he needed to go back to the start of the series. Toby’s death was only a result of the events of this movie, so why couldn’t he go back to the start of the film and change the events of the movie? Would’ve still invalidated a lot of it, but that’s way better than flushing the entire franchise down the drain and ignoring all the lessons learned. Change the film, Toby, Strickler, Nomura and Nari survive, rest of the series stays intact.
Is nobody gonna talk about the fact that Jim won’t become half troll again so there’s no way to stop Gunmar? Like at all?? That HAD to happen, like that was THE MOST crucial decision to be made. Toby most likely will get himself killed trying to beat Gunmar and so will Jim, Excalibur or not, human Jim isn’t strong enough and too soft to stop Gunmar, and so is Toby, so the world’s pretty much screwed, good job, Jim (if they even get Gunmar’s eye for the Eclipse Blade from Strickler in the first place) and since Claire and Angor Rot might not even be involved this time there won’t be a way to kill Morgana if she returns. And even if they somehow manage to defeat those two (impossible) I can’t even BEGIN to explain the absolute havoc that will wreak on Wizards storyline and outcome. THERE IS LITERALLY NO POSITIVE ENDING FOR THIS TIMELINE.

Gunmar no longer has to leave the Darklands. By going back in time and remembering Jim can prevent Enrique from ever being taken, and they can still send Chompsky to get the babies with the cradle stone at some point. But Gunmar never has to escape and Morgana doesn't ever have to be awoken. Gunmar would just die when the Darklands dies

Nomura never needs to be in the Darklands. Jim could recruit her to his side sooner, same as Strickler. That's the point, Jim can now save everyone and be better prepared to fight the Arcane Order

They always do this...gotta have a "twist ending" but it comes out of nowhere and makes 0 sense. Jim was CHOSEN it wasn't just cause he happened upon the amulet. Or else the ENTIRE "you were a hero before it chose you" thing is completely redundant and the entire premise the series is based on is untrue

I never watched this series, my little brother put this movie on while I was babysitting him, and even I had to go, ‘What kind of a trash ending is that?’ Go back in time to save your friends and then…you just…step away? What?
Id like to see like a show where its jim relaxing while toby is the trollhunter but then this time jim starts to fail and more people start diying so jim finally realises it was a really bad idea to go back in time and try to change things so he goes and finds a way to return back to the normal time line and everything turns back to normal also they would probably need to revive toby somehow because he is the best character no doubt

Yeah, I know I was really upset at how they did so many characters *so* dirty (especially my boys Douxie and Krell. Those two were always my favourites)
It had been a while since I had seen anything related to Trollhunters, and it took me time to catch up with where we were (I really didn't remember the whole plot that led us to this movie), but even my mom was so upset at the ending. I really thought that they were going to permanently kill off Toby, because I had been saying that was the ONE thing they couldn't do. And I was getting really hopeful that they *were* going to permanently kill him off (even though I was sad about it) because that would've been a huge permanent step. But alas- they went back in time and both my mother and I got extremely upset. We invested so much time into the show(s) and it felt like all of that was officially for nothing, as everything has been erased and rewritten. We both assumed that they wouldn't follow this up and this would be the end of the entire franchise, and the books are completely different from the show, so we just sighed and let this be a disappointing end.
That said- I'm probably gonna rewatch Wizards and 3 Below- even if the franchise left a sour taste- since those two were my favourites.
My 3 problems with this movie are:
1. Aja was a jerk at times.
2. Why. Make. Steve. Pregnant. (Just to have that not happen)
3. I THOUGHT JIM WAS GOING TO STILL BE THE TROLLHUNTER BUT NOOOOO
When I started the movie I had only one hope: bring Draal back. Technically I got that, and I am very happy for that fact, but I think Jim made a major mistake letting Toby take on the mantle of trollhunter. Important moments in the story only happened because Jim was the trollhunter and Toby was there by his side. I’ll give a pass on introducing his mom and Strickler sooner since that shouldn’t change events too drastically, but he may have just caused more problems than he solved by going back in time
Edit: Apparently my phone really thinks Toby should be named Tony
don't forget that the armor does give super powers to it's wearer. so while toby wasn't much of a fighter, enhanced durability, strength, and stamina can make most people super.

From what I'm seeing from these reactions, it's like the trollhunter shows and movie had ENTIRELY different characters that just looked similar.

See, the issue with the ending is the characters went through SO MUCH development. In a matter of seconds, it was all undone. My heart literally can't take a do-over, so if they think they can start another series doing everything over...I just can't. It'd feel like drinking straight backwash.
what kills me is the end. the whole of everything in this series was that DESTINY IS REAL. imfine with strickler and toby dying. i mean, im not, but i understood that it has to happen for the plot of the movie. but THEN they erased everything. all the character development, all their chemistry, all their memories. gone. not to mention your friends arent really your friends anymore because everything that happend to them DIDNT HAPPEN. the whole point is that YOUR HERE FOR A REASON. Douxie said that in like the last episode of wizards. so did jim. they threw away everything for no freaking reasonand it makes me so mad and sad because i emotionally connected to all these characters so not only are they losing thise memories, but i am too. after the movie i cried NONSTOP for 40 minutes straight and i still cry when i think about the ending. nothing helps me forget the ending. i sat and binge-watched these shows for months for NOTHING.

No, it was total BS. It would have worked so much better if Bellroc just went on a rampage with their titan after the plan was ruined and they just had to stop it from causing mass destruction. Same level of threat basically but without Blinky looking like an idiot.

Even if I were to ignore the fact that the ending was a undercutting, what I think was really a shame was the missed opportunity of expanding on Toby's death. The movie has been insisting the whole time that they're all Trollhunters but you how what would have really driven that home leaving no room for doubt?
_Toby's soul entering the Void to join the other fallen Trollhunters._ The Heartstone was right there to show it all happening. Of course it would have been unlike Toby to just hang around in the Void forever so he'd probably leave to meet his parents or something (maybe say hi to Draal). It would have reinforced both him being a hero and the mantle of Trollhunter being a shared one.
In my personal opinion, adding time travel to a series just ruins the whole franchise. It happened in Trollhunters, and also in the new marvel show LOKI. It just says that 'everything you have watched/ invested your time in is completely pointless, which can be changed in the blink of an eye using time travel'. Time travel is a popular trope, but it is becoming a cliche. Basically, the marvel/ trollhunter series have been ruined for me, and if there are any continuations or additions to them I will have no motivation of watching them because whats the point. They can just change the whole thing again.

I find time travel a very intriguing concept, and really enjoy most movies with that in it. Like Back To The Future. But HOW they did it in Trollhunters was just a terrible use of it. They took it too far.
My favourite character is Steve and I really went into this movie thinking maybe he'd get Excalibur (especially after how he bonded with the knight dude in wizards?) and finally get a cool little arc? I'm sure you can all imagine my disappointment at what we actually got

Thank you for specifically pointing out how they trashed Aja’s character. I always thought that was weird. They had a solid idea, but just didn’t commit to it. Honestly, Wizards wasn’t that great either. I hated that they undid Troll Jim, and it set the stage for cheap cop-out endings.
I love the tales of arcadia series so much and watched it the day it came out, loved the movie, but was pretty disappointed about the ending. you get so invested into the characters and its like it never happened. I was so confused and I'm glad i'm not the only one who thought it was disappointing.

I'm also sad we didn't get to see much development between relationships, even in wizards. I wanted aja and jim to bond over having so much responsibility and being head first warriors. I wanted to see krell and duxie get along with their wittiness and intelligence. The wizards and trollhunters got a bit ore development between each other, but still
I really sat still for 2 hours after watching the movie and seeing the end. all the good things we saw when Jim was the trollhunter and spend our time on watching. I don't even see Toby surviving as long as Jim did. He would die in the training if you would ask me. And if he did the titans would definitely be there 2 and Jim would have to sacrifice himself instead of Toby.

Something that infuriated me was that now all that hardship that they had to go through with Bular, Strickler, Gunnar and Morgana now has to happen all over again except Toby has to fight through it. It was already established in Trollhunters that without Jim as the troll hunter Bular wins and Gunnar gets set free. You know, that episode where Jim realizes that HE IS THE TROLLHUNTER NO MATTER WHAT?!?!? Same thing with Wizards and 3Below. Douxie now lacks self confidence agains as well as his master wizard status. Krel is friendless again and Aja has to go through the pain of losing their parents, denying her responsibility as future queen, and Vex’s betrayal all over again. And don’t even get me started on Eli and Steve. 🤬🤬🤯😤😡😫😫🙄
In my opinion, a better ending would have been the movie’s actual end(or maybe even just skip it) then a cut back to the sceen with Claire and the rest of the cast where Jim comes back still as the troll hunter and says something along the lines of “I tried. I tried so many times. I couldn’t change anything.” Then the rest of the remaining cast comforts him. I know its much sadder of an ending and idk if time travel can work that way but imo this would have been a better ending than the one we were given.
