    These guys are pretty fast. I noticed that in all the styles, you need good perception, reflexes, and coordination to put the enemy at a disadvantage. In the empty-hands style he used two motions, one to deflect the attack, and the other to counter; both came out smoothly and quickly. This was a good video.

    It is not a dying art. It's quite obvious it will never be as popular as Judo or Karate, Muay Thai, etc. But it has its place among those that want to use weapons and it is growing steadly even here in Brazil.

    I'm not getting involved with who can beat what etc. All I'll say is that this is a good DEMO of what this system has to offer. I love the flow hat kali teaches you. It's unlike anything I've come across in other arts I've studied.

    Agree with you 100%! I'm also a proud practitioner. Unfortunately, I have a hard time explaining it to other people who thinks you only practice to fight with a stick. But I was there before I tried it out!

    In Kali/Escrima, the motions you learn with the stick and the knife become the motions you use empty-handed.
    This way you have a streamlined system that can be used with or without a weapon. You have more angles of striking than most of the more commonly-known striking arts. The footwork is also triangular and will mystify just about anyone who attempts to "box" you. Kali strives to be a more complete system that is geared for combat, though it can be modified for MMA/UFC as well. Just wait.

    Krav Maga was never intended for long-term mastery. The Israeli military developed it for the purpose of having a simple yet highly effective system of hand-to-hand combat to teach new recruits as part of standard training. It does what it is meant to do, nothing more. Thus it also experiences the limitations you and others have mentioned.

    yossi. I completely agree with your statement. the cool thing about fma that its a survival art just like krav. and it is battle tested every day in the phillipines like krav is battle tested. I think it would be cool to see both styles fused together because they both focus on so many practical aspects of combat and survival.

    Yes but it is advantageous in a fight if you can pick up a broom stick, broken bottle, or even a pencil and know how to put it to good use. Anything and everything can be used as a weapon.

    @s3ksee, sagang labo is the version of hubad/lubad in PTK. And the reason for the footwork is that the system is based entirely on blade. The stick is just a tool to train blade tactics. Inosanto Kali trains with the stick, as a stick and a blade, and has different techniques for both. PTK's training is always based on a blade, it just differs a little based on the length of the blade or lack of a blade. Even the empty hand angles stay relatively the same.

    Shame there are rude comments on such a superb video of FMA. Great stuff I love it, thanks for posting. As a Brit. I choose Eskrima as my MA. Others may choose Judo for example, (a Japanese system). Could be argued Europe was the cradle of MA (Greece to India to China). There are British MAs but nations have no place when you are choosing an MA (it's got to be personal). I respect them all, but I choose Filipino personally. Much respect from UK to Philippines, great video.

    the Philippino arts are street lethal. its a well rounded system with strikes, submissions, and weapons. also the weapons are things you actually run into (no nun chucks or katanas). plust you can turn anything into a stick (a magazine, a pipe, a flashlight). More than worth learning.

    Interesting story...The Dog Brothers wanted the UFC to explore the notion of doing full-contact Kali stick fights with minimal protection (basically the way the Dog Brothers fight) ... this was in the mid-90s I think when the UFC was still fairly unregulated. Even then, the UFC declined the offer, calling it "too extreme." But Marc Denny is developing "Kali Tudo" -- Kali for the cage.

    True enough, but in kali we don't depend upon the common sense, intelligence or kindness of the person who was already dumb and vicious enough to attack us, instead we depend upon our own skills to protect our life from people who don't hold it to be as precious as do we. If you are in a knife fight, like it or not, it is life or death, because anyone can take your life from you with a knife.

    In fact, most Kali techniques focus on disabling a grapple by throwing strikes to vulnerable areas. You are also forgetting the fact the a Kali practitioner will most probably attack your throat, genitals and eyes before you can land a throw. In a street fight, there are no rules.

    "Martial Arts are about combat and survival. It is not about sport or some sort of consensual fair fight between gentlemen. Because of this, the attacker will probably use weapons and even if the attacker does not, you'd be foolish not to use a weapon if you could. Combat is also about destroying the opponent-- you must take the fight to him even while avoiding his attack. Only offense brings victory. Defense just delays the inevitable victory of your opponent."

  • @n3bie
    @n3bie 16 років тому

    Of course you are right. If it is possible to protect yourself without killing or even hurting your opponent, by all means you should to it. Often times, the best way to protect yourself is simply to run away, but in a case where that is not an option, unfortunately the most effective techniques with the highest chance of protecting you, are often also the most deadly.

    The guy at the end with the sticks was impressive. But it's like using nunchaku.
    Unless you know how to attack someone with them, they're useless. You have to account for recoil and speed. You might be able to hit fast, but think of how hard those things are gonna come back when they hit something solid.
    Nunchucks and sticks are basically used for making your opponent think "shit" as you're waving them around, before you smash their head in with your fist.

    for self defense on the ground, people should learn the basics, but also how to strike while on the ground -- this doesn't mean throwing punches and elbows from the mount, it means creating space from any position you can find and using knees, kicks, elbows, palms.
    I think it would be tough to make aikido work as intended. However, if you take concepts like blending and apply them generally, it works well. Also, ukemi is a good skill.

  • @WFROSE
    @WFROSE 16 років тому

    yeah, in an ideal situation, we could take them down without being life threatening, but a knife fight to begin with isn't an ideal situation. Many techniques in PTK deal with removing their weapon first, but when you're up close (Pekiti Tirsia means 'Close Quarter'), it's every shot you can take before he drops you first. Even if you could stab them in the leg, doesn't mean that they will drop; adrenaline tends to do that for a person.

    DuraheLL, for training, sticks are a good replacement for bladed weapons and in themselves are also good weapons, aside from being easily available. As for the times that you are unlikely to have a stick in hand, eskrima, although some of you may use the term FMA, trains you primarily to deal with an armed opponent or opponents such that unarmed opponents would, of course, become comparatively easier to deal with. When you become skilled, you get to the empty hand techniques.

  • @copypacercopypacer

I can't describe how many times I've had to correct people parrying with their fingers spread wide open in class. A Jujitsu practitioner would have them snapped and locked in a second, assuming the parrier doesn't accidentally break them themselves.

  • @WFROSE
    @WFROSE 16 років тому

    Truthfully, three strikes is the ideal amount of attacks you do in a barrage. With those three strikes you're most likely to not have to go for another barrage of attacks, or worse yet, be on the recieving end of one. PTK is a military fighting style, the only Kali style recognized by the Filipino military; it needs to kill in as few attacks as possible, with enough attacks to confirm the damage.

  • @s3ksee

    @Soulfege09
    Well... PTK is a system cultivated and perfected by the Tortal clan, whereas Inosanto Kali is a blend of Lacoste and Lameco eskrima among others. The footwork are completely different - same triagular pattern, but PTK uses what's called broken footwork, zoning. Chamber positions and application of strikes differ slightly. The sabre (knife) grip in PTK is different than Inosanto's. PTK is more aggressive, Inosanto Kali is more like a "chess game."

    Some suggest it is a contraction of the phrase kalim lihook (sp?) "hand and body movement" while others suggest it comes from the word kalis, meaning a long knife. But there's a strong Indian influence in almost all Southeast Asia

    @actionmanrandell Yes, from its beginnings, martial arts were used as a combative system, but from past GM's who have passed down their teachings, many GMs have realized that in the end, the best fight is to not fight at all. This stems from their understanding that violence is a vicious cycle that will never end because one person will always try to be better than the other person. In time we should realize this, but I never said you should not use it if you are faced with a threat.

    It is better to reduce it, but remember, the possibility of losing is already low, and the possibility of being in that situation in the first place is low aswell. the kali training or stick fighting is a substitute to training for the use of a sword,sundang,bolo,machete etc... its not pointless since most practitioners who practice kali are either in the army navy or airforce and for the knife training has the same concept while the empty hand aspect is also taken from the kali techniques on how to block armed opponents and arnes is the stick fighting and kali is use for training with swords both use sticks and has the same moves but different uses

    Also, Inostanto Kali incorporates hubud/lubad techniques and dumog. PTK I believe uses something like hubud called numerada(?). PTK does put a lot of emphasis in speed and power, Inosanto's more on combination and reflexive countering. But you know, don't think of these differences as if one system is better than the other... both systems have a lot to offer and can turn anyone into a lethal weapon. I hope that helps. ^_^

    @kjkidd I understand what you mean by traditional martial arts using pre-arranged forms while sparring, which is common. But for example, Wing Chun, you're training constantly for hand-eye co-ordination, and predicting strikes before they actually happen, and blocking and attacking as a reflex. They don't necessarily have to be pre-arranged strikes in sparring since all you need is a "bridge" which is basically any strike from any angle. Once you reach a certain level, they do only fullcontact.
