High ball = open stance Low ball = neutral or closed stance. This simple basic rules did help me win those matches I used to lose. As I have been struggling for handling the high ball for quite a long time . Finally my tennis mentor sent me this Video. Thank you.
Thanks for covering this, I've been wondering about it for a long time. Something else I've been unsure of, maybe a topic for another video? How to handle grip changes from forehand to backhand. For example, I use a SemiWestern forehand and hit my backhand with an Eastern Grip for topspin, or your modified Continental grip for Slice. Going from SW to Eastern is fine, but for Continental, the twist feels weird to do in one go. Should you rotate a different way to reach Eastern vs Continental, or rotate twice to get to Continental? Thanks!
Great content as usual! Just to confirm my understanding, no matter what stance, the weight shift is always from right to left foot, correct? (For right handed of course) Thanks!
I mention this because it is clear to see the weight transfer from right to left foot on the open stance (aka, you plant the right foot, load, and push off prior to ball contact) However, this weight transfer is not very clear on close/neutral stance. From my understanding, in close/neutral stance, it is incorrect if you step in and plant the left foot (weight is now on left foot) prior to ball contact, and hit the ball using body rotation and stepping of right foot (instead of weight transfer). I see many people hit close/neutral by stepping forward the right foot like this, so i just want to clarify this point. Thank you so much!!
Closed stance is ancient. You use it only if you cant make it better. Semiopen or neutral stance when you are moving forward amd backward, open stance when you are moving sideways. Locking your body and abbilty to go forward after your shot.makes closed stance obsolete
Should your body weight go forward or to the side in open stance? You seem to be transferring the weight from your right to left leg, but should you lean into the court and let your legs follow rather than keeping them in place?
Body weight forward is a luxury. Body rotation if more important. There are many coaches who promote getting your weight forward as often as possible. But, that leads to actually struggling to rotate the body in many situations which makes your shots worse. Focus on rotation and if you can get your weight forward then that’s fine. But don’t force your weight forward if it’ll mean you can’t rotate.
Hey thanks so much. Distance doesn’t mean we can’t do lesson with each other. I do live zoom lessons. You send me video of you hitting and we meet live on zoom where I compare you to the pros and show you EVERYTHING you need to do to improve (technique, footwork, strategy, etc.). They’re amazing and better than any in person lesson you’ll ever receive. You can book them on my website 2MinuteTennis.net.
Perfect Ryan. Another question that was on my mind you answered. Now generally speaking, because I know how important early preparation is, is it better to move forward and hit the higher bounce with an open stance, or stay where you are with a closed stance? 212
Good question. As long about which shot is better and which shot helps you win. Hitting earlier isn’t always better. So if you hit better waiting and letting the ball drop then do that. Know yourself and play to your strengths.
Ahhhh there is!!!! Higher balls are easily hit with western grips (open stance). Lower balls are easily hit with eastern grip (closed stance). So you are correct. :)
Interesting you say hit low balls with a closed stance, I would just hit all of them open I think. Low balls are easier to hit open imo as if the ball is low and skidding and you still want to top spin it you need a flat racket face and the ability to pull it straight up as that's the only way to generate the lift to get it over the net and spin to pull it down on the other side. That is only possible with my semi-western grip if you are open (hips around) and hitting in front as it gives you the flat racket and the windscreen wiper motion going up.
Excellent form my man! I usually have trouble with higher balls. Particularly if I've been rallying hard low balls and it suddenly comes high and with less pace. I'm going to try to think more diagonal/across as you said to see if it helps. I'm sure it's also mostly mental since it happens more during matches.
Hey Ryan, great video as always! Do you think the open stance also helps because you are pushing up off the outside foot? As opposed to neutral or closed, where your front foot causes you to lean forward and down into the court. Thanks!
Hey no problem. I’ll keep doing it but I’ve a not that you don’t like it. I can’t make everyone happy. I’m here everyday making world class tennis content. Taking time out of my day. Day after day. To make free content for tennis players around the world so everyone can improve. I’m not going to make everyone happy. As I said, I’ll continue to open my videos this way until I decide to change it. Thanks!!

Man I wish you were local to me. I'd love to take actual lessons from you. You have a knack for breaking things down in a way that makes it simple.

Which one gives you more power?
I’m right eye dominant. Doesn’t this mean I should hit as much open stance as possible?
Nope. Open and closed stance are based on many factors…neither of which is eye dominance.

I always thought there is a correspondence between open stance and western grip and closed stance and eastern grip.

Great video lesson. It cleared up several things for me.
Thanks so much Glen!
My favorite tennis coach for sure!!
Wow thank you so much Reese!!
There's no way that I'm aware of to use an open stance with a one handed backhand, you got to be closed to hit that shot.
Hi Ryan, excellent video. Can you please do a similar video on using the correct stance on backhand especially the one handed back hand? Thanks
Great video! Could you do one on how to move correctly on the court ? Thanks from Venice ITALY
Interesting you say hit low balls with a closed stance, I would just hit all of them open I think. Great! something different. Thank you.
You rock!!!!!!!! I love your videos learned so much from you
How about backhand. Is it also open stance on high balls?
Hey Ryan, great video as always! Do you think the open stance also helps because you are pushing up off the outside foot? As opposed to neutral or closed, where your front foot causes you to lean forward and down into the court. Thanks!
You were not so excited to say 'you got this' this time.😊
This is a good topic that isn't covered much! Good video
which stance is most played ?
Love it!! good explanation sir.
Perfect explanation 🎉
Good to know. I do a lot of open stance.

Hi Ryan, just keep doing what you think the right way. I like your videos very much! Very helpful.
