    Try to think about each "thing" in your house or apartment as just another rock in your backpack weighing you down, they go away easier. Give to friends or family things you just can't part with, knowing they will be appreciated and come back to you if you leave van life.

      I love this analogy!

      @Chapter 4 Travels Dont give anything away that you expect back. I did that in my family and either my stuff was sold, thrown or re-given away --- after promises it wouldnt be. I also had stuff forced back on me when family/friends said they didnt want to hold it anymore and this forced me to pay for storage. Some things cannot be sold or thrown but 90% can and its best to think of it as the most liberating thing one can ever do. Getting down to almost nothing in your life is an amazing feeling, the best ever, and makes you think hard about ever accumulating again. This week I sold something I purchased 20 years ago on the firm belief Id never sell it. It broke my heart and made me feel like a failure but im staying on the mission, van or no van, frankly.

      @@cvcoco I just sold my house, I designed and built this house with my own two hands. I loved that house, but in the end, it's just a thing. I don't think about it at all, time to move on and the house sale makes that possible.
      I also designed my step van conversion and am more fond of it than I was of my house. I designed my house for me but also for resale value. My van is just for me without regard for resale. This makes it more special to me.

      Do it. You're young enough to make a mistake and recover if its not for you, if it is you'll be saving 2 to 3 times as much as your friends will be so if you decide some time down the line you want a house you'll be able to buy it far sooner than if you rent until you can afford a deposit. I've calculated it and as long as I don't get too many car problems I'll be able to save 3-400 per week.

    Its encouraging to know that you were previously a military member who decided to live in a van once your enlistment was up. I'm in the Air Force and I've been thinking about living in a van once my 6 year contract is up. I personally think that converting a van is a way better choice than buying a house/paying rent for an apartment. I'm looking forward to watching you convert a new van in the near future. Thanks for the valid points you made throughout the video!

      Dont try to live in a van. Travel in a van. Camp vacation in a van. Do NOT try to live in one.
      Vans are also the most expensive route. Yes mpg is double. But your required driving is triple. Up front cost, build out cost, and insurance are higher. You're hyper limited on where you can stay in hot weather demanding long drives into high elevation where resources and cell service is non-existent. Thus requiring lots of fuel to resupply and at much higher frequency. Making it utterly pointless over a larger vehicle/RV/Schoolie/etc.
      All of this to live in a 50 sq ft shoe box pissing in jugs and pooping in a bucket day in, day out, week after week. Month after month. Year after year.

      Thats literally how it was in the military.
      Just because you can't handle it doesn't mean the rest of us cant.
      I used to pay $1200 in rent and now my total monthly expenses are $400. After 3 years its not that hard.

    I cant imagine how my life would have turned out if I had lived in a van till I retired from my career. I think its a great idea considering all the greed in real estate and the cost of living just to put food on the table today. I just turned 43, Im retired now, im busier now than I was when I had a job. I bought an Astro van a few years back, I completed a lot of projects on it, I sold it this year for a really nice profit and bought a 99 Dodge Ram Van, Im staring all over again. I have already wedged a 2018 new engine and tranny, lifted it 8 inches and run 35 inch tires on it. This one is going to be my best work, I have just started with the bare essentials. I will continue to use it for surveillance, video and photography projects. I recently sold footage to a major network of the riots and marches, the money is great but the rush is priceless. I was in the middle of a march, I poked my head out the front door window, sat on my custom roof rack while flying my drone right into a huge fight. I noticed it was moving towards me. I grabbed my drone, slid into my van and closed the drapes so no one would see me. I have cameras for a 360deg view around my van, I captured more footage just feet from me. No one knew anyone was in my van, I waited 2 hours then drove away. I feel alive, Im living the dream, I cant get enough of the rush I get when something so big is happening just inches away from me unnoticed. On my way home back to my state, I went for some storm footage and caught 2 tornados and lots of destruction footage. I guess you can say I am creating a new career for myself. I would do a You Tube channel but I feel it would jeopardize my real work just because I wanted a better content with You Tube. Its still on the table but im not sold on it yet. If I had someone with me in the same scenario and vision, I might do it.

    One of my biggest problems with full van/camper life or even part time is I’m a “collector” & already have an entire room just to store the bulk since I don’t have enough room to display everything yet :/ If the stuff was worthless than sure I could ditch a lot of it but I’m pushing $40K worth of inventory at the moment (I’m almost at my mid 20s) and it would take a fair amount of time to liquidate all of it. (Planed on selling when my first kid went to college if I end up having children)
    I am taking possession of a 1999 Tahoe 4 door that I plan on building a bed in and converting into a camper as my winter project. Maybe spending more time camping in the vehicle will push me to go out more which I really need for my mental health. Great video positive vibes 💜🥂

    My biggest fear is a disaster with the vehicle, not something like an accident which could be covered by insurance but a major issue with the vehicle itself. Guess I'll have to get a credit card. I actually have a van that I could convert that is in pretty good shape and runs nicely with a lot of space. My second issue of course is building passive as well as active income which I'm working on right now. Those are literally the only things stopping me, I've thought this over for a while and want to pull the trigger and hit the road

    • @michaelderogatis4658
      @michaelderogatis4658 Рік тому +3

      Also, make sure that you have AAA extended coverage. This will be about $135 a year, but the plan will tow your vehicle up to 200 miles. Peace of Mind

    Thanks so much for the inspirational pep talk!! Selling everything you don't use is an awesome tip and will definitely free up those invisible ties to physical items. Most of the time we just keep stuff because we feel guilty about getting rid of it, when in reality, someone else could put it to good use. Making some quick cash is a bonus! Love your content. The problem I'm having is I don't know what I want. I know I want to go tiny but I don't know how. I have looked up Van Life, Skoolies, RVs, Trailers, Yurts, Tiny Houses, Log Cabins & everything in between. I bought a 26ft trailer in Nov 2020 and I wanted to convert it. But now I'm not sure if its the best fit for me. I love the idea of Skoolies but if it breaks down I'd have to stay in a motel well my home is being repaired.

    • @OutdoorsEmbrace
      @OutdoorsEmbrace  3 роки тому +3

      If you want flexibility, van life gives the most. You adapt to the space you have to work with. Vans can park is so many more places than skoolies. RVs even worse. Trailers probably are a little better, but they take up too much parking space to get into the nice areas many times. Tiny Houses and Yurts are stationary, and cost more over time.
      Van Life is the best option in opinion for mobility/space/fun/lifestyle tradeoffs. Sorry, but life is too amazing to say otherwise. Just my opinion though.

    • @cass2.1
      @cass2.1 2 роки тому

      I understand 100%! I originally was looking into tiny houses or container homes. But, I don't have the $$ for that right now. Right now, I figure I can live in a small RV and save money to go toward those things.

    Do you have any tips on finding cheap vans?

    • @OutdoorsEmbrace
      @OutdoorsEmbrace  4 роки тому +4

      You'll be searching daily for at least a month to find your van, if not you're doing it too fast. Take the time to find the right one.
      I mainly used FB market to search, they had a lot more and it was easy to contact people selling. I'll probably do this with my next van again.
      Keep in mind, it matters where you are located. The cheaper vans can sometimes be out west, as what I remember.

    Mosquito control while the van is open?

      Thermacel
      Get one at Walmart! They absolutely work! Only have one door open though so the wind doesn't just blow threw the van and blow the stuff out. It forms what I would call a shield; they don't come in at all with this on!

    I've been kicking the van life idea for a long time now. The only thing that I can't get aboard with is pooping in a can lined with a trash bag. It just really makes me gag. And if that goes along with van life then I'll probably never pull the trigger on it.

    • @OutdoorsEmbrace
      @OutdoorsEmbrace  4 роки тому +2

      I don't poop in my van. There are always so many 24 hour places wherever I go that I never need to poop inside the van.

      So many of them! Right now I'm working a travel photography job where I travel from fraternity to fraternity to take head shots. They pay $800 a week tax free road expenses and $400 base pay plus commissions a week for paycheck. Making bank. Jobs like this can be found, you just need to look around and search online. Another job is Appen, Lionsbridge, and Leapforce. These are all pretty much the same thing, and you only make $11 an hour, but you can set your own hours.
