I have an LT Trail Boss for work now with the DuraMax. Super impressed with this motor Best half ton truck i have ever driven. It is a no brainer! Good video!
I’m glad you did this video JB. Wife and I are planning to upgrade our Tahoe from the 5.3 to the LZO.
You will have a long range bomber! Nice combo.
16k miles on my 24 GMC AT4 3.0l LZ0. Best MPG 35.5 mpg, 26mpg avg. great vehicle.
Great video. Currently comparing these two truck, especially when GMC is offering 0% only on the 5.3, but I think the best buy if you plan to keep the truck for a long time is the diesel! Thanks. Subscribed!
Nice video. There’s a couple things I’d like to point out.
1) everyone always dogs the 5.3 for performance and yet it’s always competitive with the other V8s.
2) everyone always wants to compare JBs performance data to other reviews and most no one ever takes into consideration that the other reviews are trying to get the best possible 0-60 times. They are on closed courses if not an actual race track. And they are driving the trucks/vehicles as you would if you were driving a race car. JB is stopping on the road and then going WOT. Just as you would if you were driving these trucks in the real world lol.
3) the 3.0 Duramax would be the only 1500 truck I would consider going back to. To be able to get that kind of fuel mileage and still have a full size truck is incredible.
1 minute in and I love this dude
Add the cost of replacing the faulty lifters on the 5.3 with the DFM. Mine went at 5,000 miles on the left block of cylinders, so I got rid of it as soon as I received my title from the state.
Need to do a towing test between these 2 trucks. I’d love to see how the mini diesel does going up a grade. And see how well the big v8 will stack up
Great review I have the 5.3 and my son has the AT4 turbo diesel. Both are good I like them both
The LZO is great for towing also. Love that 3L engine in my Trail boss
With the stock tires, I’ve got up to 37 miles a gallon with mine
I have the 2021 3.0 4x4, I hit 70,000 & have had zero issues. I average 31 mpg to a tank every week . I am running 35s on factory rst wheels. I love my truck
Love your videos man, keep it up :) You should also mention the torque starts much lower in the RPM on the diesel, and for towing its definitely king sitting at way lower RPM versus the V8's towing the same weight. However ... you should compare the 6.2L as well, as to me as much as I love the diesel (I currently own a 2024 Denali Ultimate with the 3.0L Duramax) it's just a lot more fun driving the 6.2L which I'm on the list for a factory order for a '25 for just because I miss the bit more fun with the V8 and highway MPG isn't terrible as you can sit so low in the RPM range on the V8 as well.
My 2024 LZ0 Silverado LTZ with 3.73's almost neve downshifts on steep grades. It's great cruising up steep hills without listening to a 5.3 revving its balls off just to keep up with traffic. I love the 5.3 but after owning an LZ0 truck for half a year, there's no way I'm going back. Love getting 30 mpg averages on various trips.
Greetings JB R.
But for the DFM (Dynamic Fuel Management) issues (lifters) the 5.3 liters will be the best.
Even so to me both really are the best option to light - medium work and recreational tasks.
Great job miniDURAMAX!! 😮🤠
Thank's JB; BIG HUG from CDMX, México.
I always thought a hybrid diesel would be a great power train unfortunately no one makes it for some reason. Electric for daily driving and still be able to tow.
Agreed! I think Ford possibly has a hybrid model coming in the F250 lineup for ‘25-‘26 models.
These 2 engines are my favorite in this Chevy Silverado half ton
Dude you gotta check it with actual miles and a calculator. Those onboard mileage calculators are notoriously off and always reading better mileage than you’re actually getting. I have the LZO gmc baby max diesel in an AT4 (all terrain tires and factory 2” lift). The best mileage I’ve gotten on freeway is 31, typically average 24 everyday driving.
Appreciate the admission of the transmission temperature ,not a word about AFM❤❤😂😂
I have a 2020 Silverado with a 3.0 diesel I love the torque and the fuel mileage, but I do miss the sound of a gas motor
So are the interior cab dimensions of the refresh 1500 and 2024 model year refresh 2500/3500 the same, headroom, seats etc etc ?. The reason I ask is that I had sat in a friends 2023 chevy 1500 and was shocked by the lack of head room and wondered if the HD trucks are exactly the same.
In the real world that 5.3 is getting 18 and the diesel is getting 25
I also like diesel engines but traded out of my last 1. I lease for 3 years. My last veh was a 2020 Colorado 2.8 baby duramax. Really loved the truck and engine and considered buying out my lease and keeping that truck. On my last free service, I spoke with the service manager and told him of my intentions. He told me to walk away from the vehicle. He said that they were seeing many problems with the 2 .8 and once out of warranty, they are extremely expensive to repair.
2.8 isn't even in the same ballpark. The 3.0 is a collab with Isuzu
He told you to walk away because they wanted to make money on it
Have a 2024 3.0 Trail Boos. Great truck. Stock tires suck, they are very loud after a few months even with regular rotations. Also my key fobs and TPMS just quit working so I have to bring it in, probably the receiver came unplugged or went bad, seen a few people say the harness rubbed and shorted out.
I'm also a diesel fanboy, i own 2 diesel chevy cruzes. Anyway, if you're going to compare the costs, then include all of them. DEF, and the fact that diesel fuel costs more than gasoline needs to be in the equation. Also, when something goes wrong with the expensive (and engine longevity killing) diesel emissions systems, those are huge potential costs that is need to be factored in too.
nope. I'm in Arizona and around 80% of the year Diesel is cheaper than gasoline. DEF isn't a substantial cost.
He included DEF in the spreadsheet, so not sure what you're going on about. Also, DEF is around 12 bucks every 3-4000 miles for me, and that's with some towing. Factor it in, sure, but it's inconsequential in my personal experience. Now, diesel additives on the other hand, should probably be factored in also and could make a big difference over time. GM recommends running an additive which can add a few bucks per tank depending on what you run.
So are either of you guys running 3.0 I-6?
@davidporter7051 good for you, I haven't seen that in my area (AL). Now if you're comparing premium with diesel, then include understand.
@@jimsiggy yes. I have a 23 Silverado with over 52K miles.
are tuners available to increase the H.P. on the 3.0?
Not a good showing for the 3.0 on that 60'. However, those times are within the margin of error to basically call them identical between the 5.3 and 3.0.
After owning both, the 3.0 is by far the better daily and more fun to drive for me!
My ZR2 3.0 duramax averages 25. My 5th gen ram hemi averaged 17. 8 mpg gain for me
Math has me Saving over 1,000 per year in fuel
I don’t care bout MPG or 0-60 time … I care about reliability.. which one is better for keep it up to 10 to 15 years ????
I'm between this diesel and the turbomax colorado. I will be towing my racecar a few times a year and carrying my dirtbike a lot. Which one should I go with?
Good Video. I will buy a new Yukon for my wife in 2025. However, I see it as about a wash since diesel costs more here in Texas plus DEF plus filter and oil changes cost more. The LZ0 will cost another 995.00 so by the time you add all of that up. Is it worth the risk of getting the phone call stating, sorry I forgot and put the wrong fuel in the car. I am a diesel fanboy as well. I have a 23 GMC 3500 Denali Dually.
Let's hope you never get that call.😂
I've hit exactly 40MPG during a 50 miles strech driving from Albuquerque to Phoenix in my 3.0.
Downhill.
@@jeffmiller3150 and? do you have a point?
What was the average overall?
@@Tallnerdyguy lifetime at nearly 52K miles is 26.8MPG
My lifetime is 26.8 mpg as well. High in a 50 mile trip is 40.4 mpg. Personal best 25 mile trip is 44.3 mpg.
Diesel cost here in BC,Canada compared to gas is a .21 cent difference. The mechanics here at the transportation dept here at the district says unless your towing every day a diesel is not worth the cost. Higher maintenance costs, price of a diesel engine, price of diesel fuel and cost of parts and service.
One thing I noticed on my 2024 6.6 duramax about DEF consumption...when towing my 5,000lb travel trailer cross country on 4 different trips, I got more DEF range by leaps and bounds versus driving around the city. I wonder if that has something to do with keeping those EGT's up for longer runs and the DPF burns off more soot than city driving.
Yes, longer runs keeps the exhaust hot
The diesel is a very good option but once you factor in maintenance, DEF, reliability issues with the DEF system and the costs associated with fixing them etc., the gas engines close the "affordability" gap pretty quickly.
This was a tough decision for me when I bought my wife's 24 yukon. I ultimately went with the 5.3 it had the highest tow rating for her horse trailer.
What mpg towing horse trailer do you see?? How much does the trailer and horse weigh? I would have thought diesel even 3.0l would have been better than gas towing that. Considering the Yukon AT4 w 3.0L. Thanks
@BsurfChillin like 11-12 mpg on 8k trailer. 23 mpg empty. When you outfit a yukon the 5.3 has the max trailer and payload over the 3.0 and 6.2. I'm sure the 3.0 would get a little better mpg though. But it also comes with the diesel headaches.
Not sure if this has been noted in the comments already, but you did have the diesel set to "2 wheel drive" mode and the gas to "auto", and I have heard that this can make a difference to economy?
Silverado Diesel The Best 😍👏🏻
The real takeaway here is you can only get a 24 gallon tank on the half ton so having that high MPG diesel makes it tolerable for towing range. having that extra weight up front will help with stability as well. However its sorta hard to justify buying the 3.0 diesel because you tow as you can pay about the same for a gas HD or slightly more for the big duramax and really tow well. I guess someone who has a decent 20+ mile each way commute to do in the truck and a reasonably sized trailer would do really well in a 3.0 duramax. Not having to drive an empty HD truck all the time is nice. Both engines have theoretical reliability problems. 5.3 Lifters and 3.0 timing chain / emissions later on.
That's me, I drive 26 miles 1 way to work in mostly country driving and tow 5k-7k lbs a little over 5k miles/year. I'm considering a 3.0 because of this.
There is a 44gal fuel tank the aftermarket offers for the 3.0 diesel. Probably over 1,000 miles of range with that.
@@SleepyTractor It's cool that you can swap the tank on the diesel model but the gas truck is what really needs it. Nobody makes larger tanks for those due to evap emissions. 24 gallons is about 20 gallons useable and lets say you get 9 MPG towing with the V8 and 12 MPG with the mini duramax. 180 miles is too low, but 240 miles is acceptable. If you did the aftermarket tank and had around 40 gallons useable that would be like 480 loaded towing miles, pretty good! The extra fuel would take up payload on the truck and the expense of the tank and install is something. All i'm saying is a 32+ gallon tank for the GM half tons would be awesome.
@@darens440 definitely. I’ve got the V8 and it is thirsty. I off-road it quite a bit and so it uses tons of fuel. For this reason I’m looking at the 3.0 and a 44gal tank. I only tow hay with my truck when my old man can’t fit it all on his 6.6. Tow dump trailers here and there but mainly light demolition garbage. The V8 tows great and feels good with the 6’7 bed I have, but the fuel consumption is monotonous. I really need better efficiency because I drive long distances.
There are no " Timing chain problems " with the 3.0 . Are you talking about the oil pump drive belt that goes 200 k ? That is really a non issue for 99.9% of owners out there .
It's not only about MPG. Diesel is more expensive that regular gas and then there's the DEF cost. I would think if you added those expensed into the final cost, the gas vehicle would be considerably less to drive.
I have a Silverado 3.0 diesel and gave me in 50 miles from Paterson to Pensilvania 33.2 miles per gallon
The diesel has no dod/afm. So automatically that makes it more reliable than the gas v8. Dod/afm has killed the reliability of otherwise fantastic chevy v8 engines.
Yeah but the diesel has all the emissions gear that junks up the motor within 200k miles and low as 100k. Not to mention the oil pump belt being in the oil pan and in the back of the motor...
Diesel fanboy here too.... I have a 2021 Silverado with the LM2 3.0. I love the thing. 25+ mpg all day.. Also my daily driver is a 2001 VW golf TDI too. Great video as usual GM V8's could be great engines if they didn't STILL have the lifter issues...
Can't beat those early TDI's. My daily is a 03 VW wagon TDI 5spd. I'm looking at the 3.0 silverados but I may have to sell my C8 to justify getting one. I want the truck for slide in camper and random yard projects without having to use my trailer and blazer.
Does the diesel truck have AFG?
I liked the video. But like others i think that when you’re discussing vehicle cost you should add it all in there. Cost of diesel compared to gas. What’s the price Dion oil changes and how frequent over the 100k miles? What if any cost difference is there between wear and tear parts like brakes? What about the diesel engine maintenance, is there extra recommended services for the DEF system?
The diesel with max tow is a 3.73 ratio vs 3.23 stock.
JB excellent review, one question I have is what about oil loss on the diesel?
I have a 24 3.0 lz0 with 12,000 miles and it hasn't burned any oil.
And I've done 3 oil changes at 4,000 miles every time.
The hand writing is on the wall, United States restrictions on diesels will be so bad starting in 2027 the only people buying them will be those that have to have them for towing 2 or 3 times a week. Eventually everyone will get away from diesels, even those that get giddy from driving a diesel. They will refine the crude oil so much it basically has no lubrication and is basically gas.
I think the new administration will change those ridiculous rules.
I have had a 2002 Silverado with 5.3 2008 with 5.3 2011 with 5.3 and my truck now is a 2014 Silverado with 5.3 I never go by my truck computer, I fill it up until the nozzle clicks off then drive the fill it again and check how many mpg old fashion way. If I'm on a long trip and drive 55 to 60 mph my truck will get close to 22 mpg if I drive close to 90 mph I will get 19.2 if I am in town in stop and go traffic I get 15 to 16 mpg. I have never had any engine problems with any of my trucks
JB, do you know what the diesel market is like in Europe? At one time, it was very strong from my understand. Is that still the case? What are their emission standards like compared to America?
Stricter than the US. Stop crying and more diesels
Ive gotta imagine once have the comparable leather and extras and weight of people/family gear and sunroof, that the diesel equipped will do better than that 5.3L. I had the 5.3 ages ago in suburban and it barely got 12 city, 14 highway (07).
Good info.
Yeah there’s a lot you didn’t calculate into this. We’ve all seen the video from that one dude that included oil changes and fuel filters and the 5.3 wound up being cheaper.
Yeah, it holds less oil than the 5.3 and 6.2. The fuel filter is extremely cheap and takes 1000's of miles before needing changed.
but the gas efficiency of the Duramax is lost when (at least in my town) diesel gas cost like a $1 more a gallon than regular unleaded.
Not when you get 600 miles out of one tank. My 5.3 I had to fill it every week lol.
@DonaldEdwards-h6m is that right? 600?
@@mannimarquez5851 yes
I bought the 2.7 turbo absolute junk! 2023 wish I could get a 3.0’duramax so bad had a loaner loved it
Can we get a 2025 Chevy Silverado 2500 LTZ video
Not go lie. The 5.3 does have enough get up and go for daily use. I have a 2014 I drive daily and its real good on gas and power. It gets out of its own way when need be.
That 5.3 has dfm not afm and everyone is against diesel because they think the black smoke is bad actually a diesel vehicle burns cleaner then gas despite what it looks like I got the 5.3 and love it
Not really true. There's pros and cons to both and each produce more of something the other doesn't.
@@TrickyTree that 5.3 for sure has dfm
The V-8 had a couple years of bad lifters and no known issues anymore.. The 3.0 has a serviceable oil pump belt so sooner or later your gonna have to pay all that gas savings on a 12 hour repair job to service that belt it requires transmission removal ect..
I wouldn't say that people are cheap! I think most people prefer the V8 over a diesel all day! They prefer the sound of a V8 over a diesel! Plus u have to take into account of paying for def fluid every so many miles which will cost more to run maintenance wise! Cause over 21mpg for a 5.3 V8 is very good and it might be more than that if u do a lot of highway miles! The same thing with the diesel engine! That could see better mpg as well! If someone is looking for a fuel economy in a truck get the diesel! If not then get the V8! I love your videos bro! Keep up the good work 💯👌🏿
$14 for 3500 miles makes up difference in oil. 8qts vs 7qts. Def isnt a price factor
Am I the only one that doesn't buy a truck for gas mileage? We have the family car for travel and the truck for work and play 🤷♂️
You can pay $750(ish) more to save $1,500(ish) in gas a year...and then the maintenance cost of everything, plus you have a turbo to maintain, compared to the parts available of the 5.3, not to mention the reputation of the 5.3...
in my head, it's a no brainer to buy the V8. If I'm spending that much much money on a truck, it's going to be with the mindset of it being a 200k mile, lifetime truck. That diesel just hasn't seemed worth it to buy over a proven, plentiful platform to purchase.
Make the weight of the trucks even and check the mileage, then add 1000lbs payload and watch what happens to the 5.3. When you compare the fuel economy of trucks, ensure they are at the same weight before your test.
Wondering why everyone complains about the seats and GM does nothing. The seat is the closest thing to you all day long !
You forgot about the Def for the Diesel. My 2019 Yukon XL has a best mpg of 27.4 at 70mph. It regularly gets 23-24 mpg on trips. It's a great V8. I bypass the AFM by holding the transmission in 5th gear. It's a 6 speed. At 70 mph the rpm is 2,200 rpm with the 3.42 gears with the tow package. I'm happy with the power too.
$14 per 3500 isnt a huge cost. You pay more for the extra (quart) oil needed for the 5.3
Get it right GM designed ,built and tested the 10 speed automatic and Ford came over when it was all done !!! Then sent the transmission to China to be built.😢
Mathing fuel+DEF+extra cost… Diesel saves $200 over 100k miles. Depends on what you use truck for, if it’s gonna tow, that’s where the diesel will really shine above gas. Just your subdivision grocery getter? Then it’s just personal preference on which you prefer
Or my 40 mile commute. Def isn't very expensive. Figure $14 per 3500 miles. Same cost difference when you have yo get oil change, as the 5.3 takes more oil
Both the 5.0 and 3.5 Ecoboost will out perform a 5.3 power wise anyday.
Where i live diesel is .50 to $1.00 more than gas and a gallon of def is $15 . Southern ohio . I never had the diesel truck but a 2020 5.3 18 to 23 mpg . It did get 25 in mt on vacation . That 5.3 was direct injection ..traded for 22 ram 6.7 diesel . 18-20 mpg , $200 for fuel filters ever 15 k ,$100 for oil change full sy 10 k , $15 for def every 1500 miles .
Its not a gallon, it's 3.5
Abolish the EPA!!
The problem with the 3.0 diesel is you have to buy an upper trim package. It’s not an option on WT, LT, etc. #Winning
I am looking at the 2024 model ( they don't show the 2025 on the Canadian site ) of Chevy pickups and they show the 4x4 Custom Trail Boss as having the option for the 3.0 ... and the LT and every truck from there up. However what I assume they are still doing although don't know about the 2025 model year, is that the only way to get the max tow package AND still retain the high/low range transfer case is to get the High Country. Otherwise they only allow the single speed transfer case with lower trims and the max tow package. It is completely retarded in my mind as I live in a world where a pickup has to have low range to be worth having.

The 5.3 engine is a beast but I think you misspoke a little bit when you said that a 383 ft/lb torque engine dominated an uphill towing test vs a 500 ft/lb engine.
Emission problems with check engine light is common issue for diesels. DPF cleaning is expensive or to replace it !!!!! I put together all expenses , I own Silverado gas and diesel- gas is way more cheaper .
oil pump belt needs to be changed every 100k on the diesel
200k on the LZ0
