They don't portray it very well but I think Paku's sudden change of heart was because he realised the traditions he was sticking to so hard is what pushed away the love of his life. I think the depiction of his gender biases were meant to be a red herring in regards to his character and he was just meant to be very strongly attached to his tribe's traditions and culture, but imo they played it too strongly. It makes his sudden 180 seem more jarring than it should.
There are very few gripes I have with the show after this point and they're all pretty minor. It's a great season finale coming up but I can't wait for season 2.

I'd disagree. I picked up on that when I first watched this show 10 years ago (at the age of 12). Honestly their confusion over this fits more in line with them just missing the message.
You know, cause they have that quirky way of reacting where they miss lots of important things, like all characters, organizations, and causes being two sided, and arbitrarily suspect characters of being bad.

I like this thread because every comment covered a piece of what I feel about this episode lol. I don't recall my first ever reaction to it, but as far back as I can recall, I understood his change as well. At the same time, I also noticed that many more people miss the point than compared to other episodes, and so it's hard to deny that it could have been clearer. But these 2 definitely decided that Pakku was the source of the sexism when the show does tell us it is the culture (i.e. they laugh in disbelief when he claims his culture was disrespected), so they had an added layer of confusion.
I think if they showed any other character reaffirming or elaborating on Pakku's claims about their culture (they seemed to try with the Chief, when he asks Katara to apologize, but it's too indirect) then maybe people would understand it more. Because right now it seems like people think he's playing favouritism with Katara, since there is no way he could otherwise change something so fundamental about "his" beliefs in such a short amount of time. But like OP said, the writers likely wanted to give that impression as a red herring, so you kind of have to sacrifice a little.

What I don't understand is that water is supposed to be the element of change and the people are supposed to adapt quickly. Yet the water tribe desperately clings to their stupid traditions, like shouldn't the water tribe be the most progressive nation? Next to the fire nation maybe? The northern water tribe literally watched as the waterbenders in their sister tribe got taken away and murdered. And instead of taking that opportunity to change and to train as many waterbenders as possible so their kind doesn't go fckung extinct, they still cling to those stupid traditions. Northern watertribe ppl are adaptive, my ass.

As a kid Katara was sometimes my hero and sometimes I really disliked her because she was always so impulsive about literally everything.
Like..whenever she gets a no or any bad response she just yells and for me ( I was raised to not do that similar to Mai,behave, manners,be quiet) she often seemed like she has some anger issues or something and that she shouldn't just throw a fit whenever she doesn't agree with something.
In this particular instance though she was my hero because she was in the right and rightfully stood up to him.

On that scene, he'd taught him two crucial things: to keep the feet well planted on the floor (wich is how he beat Zhao, by breaking his stance) and that firebending comes from breath chanelling the energy through the body... wich is what kept him alive.

What a lot of American's don't realize is that marriages back in the olden times was about necessity, love came later. The idea is that you needed to keep and pass on the family line. This is especially true of nobility. The children of kings wither male or female were used to broker piece treaties. And yes women got the raw end of the deal, but both sexes were used as bargaining chips. It's not right but it prevented wars. Yue wants love but she feels committed to the duties and traditions of her tribe. Yes it is wrong to force people to marry but for here it is a matter of honor.

Leisure that is a legitimately bad take for the rushing of plot development whenever Avatar has taken its time to develop plot points before and especially later in the story. Regardless, those are assumptions about a fantasy world. And even then life expectancy cant be so criminally low, as you claim, to hypothetically justify any rushed feelings because old people like fire lord Azulon, Iroh, and even gran gran are/were still kicking it far into old age.

It didn't feel forced to me. You're supposed to wonder why it's dramatic, and then you find out and you're like ok that makes more sense. There's some inferences that have to be made...like they're not gonna spell everything out for you. It's just a side plot, they're not gonna focus that much on it. They're not gonna kill off a character that we get super invested in.

“[Paku] is so rude.” “I will not teach girls anything.” The funny thing is, Paku was not rude, Katara was. She point blank insult him, his beliefs, his culture, and his society. She was quite brazen because it challenged her dreams. But, her goal was to convince Paku the belief in question was wrong. You cannot convince someone to change their mind by insulting them. Once you insult them, they generally stop listening. Even if your argument is correct, even if it is good, you’ve immediately lost, because they are no longer listening. Considering the level of insult, Paku was actually rather civil in response. He was certainly obstinate and stubborn, and when Katara was called out for being rude in public later, we was definitely smug about it.
The fact that he relented so quickly at the end shows that he likely didn’t really believe that women shouldn’t learn fighting forms, just that he was respecting his culture and society. So, Katara’s tact of insulting his culture and society was never going to work. What seemed to work was the reminder about how women’s roles in his society had hurt him as a young man- the conversation started by the necklace. That plus the respect Katara earned from the sparing match showing just how capable she actually was what, I believe. Yeah, it was kind of a quick turn around, but shows do that when they lack time, for better or worse.
Now that a grand master and leader of their society has become publicly accepting, it will likely facilitate change in the future. Society slowly follows its leaders.
Those are my two cents; your opinions may vary.

It's like if we were to talk about the Middle East's treatment of women and homosexuals. We can say that it's wrong all we want, but we don't get actually get a voice in the matter. If something is wrong it's wrong, if treating people unfairly is part of the culture then your culture is dumb and should be criticized. Who cares if it's disrespectful. Once upon a time in America is was totally cool to hold people as slaves, were the slaves cool with that? No,was it morally right? Hell no, but it was culturally exceptable and legal to do so. If you never "disrespect" stupid aspects of a society nothing will ever really progress.

no matter how much i like both of them most of the time, there are also times they simply annoy me.. e.g. it's not a problem if they drool over some guy like crazy - people could call it objectification - but got beware a show depicts a guy doing the same over a woman.. that's why i think they both are hypocrites sometimes.. but i guess that's what most of society is like with sexism against men being far more acceptable and considered even funny, while sexism against women is the worst.. in reality on the other hand it does not matter who is the victim of sexism, it's always shit.. so if i don't want to be the victim of sexism i should maybe also try to recognize my own sexism and stop it as well.. just like if i don't wannt get slapped or punched in the face i should not walk around punching other people in the face...

she should have been grateful to learn about the healing that saved her hands, and bending, and it would have been an invaluable asset to the group, AND aang could learn through her, and her learn combat through him

Roifor “letting the avatar learn water bending from a master or changing old tradition” it’s just like aang said when he made a necklace for Katara and Sokka said instead of fighting the fire lord you can go into the jewelry making business, aang: “I don’t see why I can’t do both” aang killed 2 birds with 1 stone by showing his displeasure at his discriminatory rule and in the end was successful at changing it which will positively affect the future of the tribe because they have effectively doubled their soldiers, yes it important for him to master the elements but there’s nothing wrong with improving the lives of people who are in an unequal system (some other times team avatar helped when they could’ve just left and continued their journey are helping the fishing village, helping free haru, his father and other earth venders etc
