Stanley 10-788 Utility Knife Instructions and Demonstration

- Here is a quick review and demonstration of the Stanley 10-788 utility knife. Some people have had issues with theirs but I've had a few of these over the years and they have worked decently well for me with a few quirks. From what I can tell, the older model with the smooth grip seems to have more issues.

Thanks very much for this video. The knife comes with useless diagrams and I just couldn't work out how to open the back! All sorted now.
Nice vid. Very helpfull.
Very true
not sure why you would ever get a thumbs down on this perfectly explained video. I think people get confused and think that this is a review of the tool... :) Good job explaining!
What a legend. Just spent 15mins messing around with that thing lol
I've had this knife for so long I don't remember buying it. Needless to say I forgot how to change the blade or that I could open the blade compartment with a button. It is very satisfying to open my packages with a nice new sharp blade. Thank you for the simple straightforward video to clearly explain how to change the blade.
My blade is stuck and Im struggling to remove it..it pokes out just a tiny bit...
I bought this at a tag sale for 25¢. I was seconds away from trashing it until now. Thanks!
Thank you. Have just bought one and had no idea how it worked. ☺
Excellent and much needed. Instructions not great but this quick video direct and straight to the point. Thanks.
I have 7 or 8 of these ome of which is the original with the oval button. They are all very easy to change blades. The oval one extends the blade carrier out a tad at the bottom when the slider is all the way forward. The older one also holds a few less blades but holds them tighter. The newer ones are just like this video. Both work the same way and very well. The knife is strong, easy to grip and very reliable.
I have 2 of these. Bought them decades ago, but couldn't for the life of me figure out how I changed the blades since I haven't needed to do so for quite a while. Struggled for 30 minutes, found your channel and I'm good to go. THANKS! 👍 Subscribed.
Thank goodness for your video! I really didn't want to go back to my hardware store! LOL
i nearly chucked mine over the wall in frustration
Thanks for this video, the back button was so new and after a few uses is broken in.
I’ve owned this knife for 5 years at least and always forget how to change the blade. 🤯🤯
Hahaha lol
thank you for a clear concise explanation. I was trying to make it harder than it is!
Thanks for the video and wtg Stanley for complicating a basic hand tool
Thank you this video helped me so much unboxing and loading the blade for the first time.
Glad I could help!
Thank god for the 2nd half of this video. I didn't even know that mine didn't start with a blade already in it and that there was a spot inside the back that I had to retrieve.
Really cool what you done here 😎
Good video but, like a lot of other people, we need to know how to get the original packaging off; pressing the yellow button and pulling did not work, seems you have to pull really hard. I ended up dismantling the knife and putting it together again, a bit fiddly, and took about half an hour, trying not to cut myself, which is presumably why they've designed the packaging. Think it should be a bit simpler
I’m having the same issues. Trying to get that stupid piece of cardboard out of it so I can put a blade in!
At this point it’s not even a good paper weight
Same ere! Can’t believe I needed to watch a video for this, but didn’t even notice the button on the back 😀🤣🤣
Well leave it to Stanley to try and build a better mouse trap, not the case here. Bought this for gardening uses opening bags of mulch and cutting twine etc. The blade becomes a bit dirty inside and then the yellow button becomes inoperable and then breaks and now you have to completely disassemble the thing to change the blade. It is headed to the round file. Going back to old faithful non-retracting Stanley knife.
After 3 hrs of hard drinking, intricate observation, slicing our fingers, a brain Doctor couldn’t even figure this Stanley thing out. Many stitches later.........
Thank you! Person at Ace Hardware didn’t know how to do it.
Yeah, but how do you get the original packaging out of the knife? I've tried everything!
I’m struggling with the same problem with the Stanley Instant Change packaging. Did you find the solution?
@@RestWithin I finally prevailed...but it was a while ago and I don't remember exactly how. I think I somehow cut the cardboard close to the movable thumb piece and then jiggled it until it came loose. All I remember is that whatever I did surprised me when it worked. Sorry!
I own two and once I move the slider all the way forward, I will depress the slider button and also the yellow button simultaneously and that's the only way, I found out, that the blade will come out and then I do everything in reverse to install the new blade. But I can't just press the yellow button and pull it out because it will not come out and that his true for both utility blades. Good luck.
The fact we are all here, needing to find a vid explaining how to change a blade says it all!
I had to disassemble the whole knife as the blade would not go in due to the yellow button not compressing. Upon disassembling the entire knife I noticed little pieces of swarf after removing them and re assembling the knife it works perfectly now. Would I buy another? No
I have the same problem. The yellow button doesn't compress at all. What a crappy utility knife, money down the toilet.
My sister just gift me 3 of these knives and I took the screw out thinking that would open them up, but didn't. 🤨
Now after practicing changing the blade on them and got them ready. 🙃
Nice and easy ,cherss mate
Thank you!
Thanks. Keep forgetting.
can someone tell me how to remove the paper
I came here looking for an answer to the same question. Since I didn't see one, I unscrewed the 2 visible screws hoping I'd be able to access the paper from the inside - I wasn't. Finally, I cut off the tiny piece protruding from the side, braced myself, and pulled far harder than I thought I should have had to and it came out. I did it while the screws were still out, but I'm assuming that is not necessary.
You pull the top of the paper (the bit where it goes down into the slot for the blade knob) hard. It breaks a little loop, and then you can pull it out of the blade slot.
I yanked the crap out of it
LOL! I just ripped that sucker off!
Thank y'all. I finally pulled as hard as I could and it came out. It really needs one hell of a yank!
This Stanley box cutter model can be used has a seatbelt cutter because tht integrated string cutter recesses in the blade like tht of a seatbelt cutter’s blade!
thank you
Thank you kind sir😃
Thanks never would have figured you would pull out on a sharp blade
Thanks
I've had pretty good luck with these knives but have heard others have issues.
I can't get my blade to set at all. It won't fully go in no matter how hard or how light I press on the yellow button.
I have an original oval yellow blade release button model that was sticking. It comes apart with two screws. I cleaned everything with wd-40 and paper towel and now it works much better.
One thing to be aware of is the manufacturing tolerances aren't that high and changing the blade requires a little wiggling. However, you shouldn't have to use much force though and pushing hard on the blade is quite dangerous. A little wiggling goes a long way.
Thanks fot this vidoe much love
Thanks for demo on how to load a blade, but how do I get a new blade from the black plastic container I just bought from the hardware store?
No where on the packaging does it tell you how to access the blades that are stored in the handle. I had to go on UA-cam to figure out how to get to them. Lousy directions on the package.
Thank you so much for this video very helpful
Amazimg thank you
Damn blade got stuck can't get the blade out
I was going to return this knife until I watched this video. It does not come with a blade installed, and it did not come with any understandable instructions for opening the blade compartment. I now have a working knife. One hint, to put the blades back in the compartment, put them In the slot in the black lower part of the compartment with the sharp side facing up and then snap together.
Too bad the yellow button can only be pressed in when the blade is fully retracted! The knife has barely ever been used, but i did notice that it might be an earlier version, since the button is oval and not trapezoidal like the one in the video. Another (cheaper) Stanley utility knife has a similar system, but it works.
If only stanley instant change utility knife would come with better instructions, that be great. It only tells you how to pull the blade out but doesn't tell you how to put the blade in and also opening the bottom part too. Unbelievable. Still good I guess......
Hi i know this video is like 5 years old but how do remove the cardboard from my new stanley knife?
There are better how-to videos that explain that when the blade is pushed forward to the last stop, it needs an extra nudge to push it forward still more (just about 1/8 of an inch) before the yellow button will release the blade.
I put the blade in to far how can i get it out?
absolutely ridiculous. I was looking for the screw to open the knife to find the blades. the yellow and black rubber idea is absurd.
Thanks..........
Blade broken in how to ppen?
My quick slide is so stiff I can’t even slide the blade to show
The yellow button on mine does not push down, so can't change anything, blade is stuck inside so cutter doesn't cut. No rust or issues like that, looks new, but doesn't work at all. This Stanley utility knife sucks.
Thank you for the video - ridiculous no directions on the package - and it is NOT INSTANT CHANGE - never thought I would have to rely on video directions. 😤
My slide button won't move at all, and I just got it last night
Ever figure it out?
You probably have something jammed in there like the original cardboard.
My slide button doesn't move at all. And the yellow button does not compress either. Worthless utility knife. Blade just goes further and further inside, and no way to get it out.
I figured it out, it was a lose screw
I just purchased one of these and if it wasn't for your video, I would have taken it back tomorrow! It took me 30 minutes to get the plastic brand card out of the damn thing before I could even start to insert a blade and that stupid yellow button isn't easy to get right.
I still might take it back, what a piece of junk! "Instant Change" it is NOT!!
Bullshit. I've replaced the blade and now my thumb button won't retract back in.
Biggest waste of 9 bucks if ive ever seen it
It said "Tear here" to tear off the cardboard paper that went up inside the knife. Well now it is stuck up inside and won't come out.
You are not alone. Many compaints on Amazon about that. One guy returned his.
I used it once. What a piece of crap. Tried to call Stanley, nope...had to give email etc etc etc...junk !!!
The video was helpful, but this utility knife is not for a person with even slight arthritis with even mild joint pain. I takes a lot of effort to push and hold the yellow button in, but I did finally get a blade in. I can see that it will be easy to cut yourself loading the blade as I almost did. I will never be able to load any extra blades in the handle! I cannot put enough pressure on the button without wrapping my hand around the bottom of the handle so I cannot pull the storage compartment open. Terrible design!
Lot of questions on the amazon site as to how you get the packaging off. One guy sent it back! Several people ended up with cardboard stuck in the handle. Most ridiculous packaging. And then the instructions are so bad people have to look for a damn video. Truly pathetic.
Jeez... how to make a lovely simply tool difficult.
serves me right by not looking at it thoroughly when buying it. Give me tools , not pieces of shit I;ve got to struggle with, watch a tutorial on then cut myself. Top marks Stanley. Will just go buy something else, that;s basic.
not helpful to me as I haven't been able to even set it up!! I
Even after watching this it doesn't work. Absolute rubbish and massive case of "if it ain't broke don't fix it!"
Thanks for trying but this is the biggest piece of shit knife I've ever bought.
Don't know what i did but finely got the blade to retract into handle.
It is low quality.
I have one thats several years ago that works great. Changing blades is effortless. Bought a new 2-for-1 set of the 10-788 a few weeks ago and neither one will allow the blade to lock in place. I’ve seen online reviews were lots of people have this problem. Shouldn’t be that hard. Piece of shit design
Thanks
