    This kind of commentary while flying is exactly what I've been looking for in WW2 dogfighting. It's really good to finally be able to put a name to these maneuvers and get a glimpse of the tactical thinking behind them.

    Very interesting, especially as you explain your considerations as you're going along. One thing struck me a peculiar: as far as I know, the K4 has a much better turn rate than the P-47 at low altitude, yet the AI kept on insisting on the B&Z approach in the last fight. I would suspect that the K4 would have been much more dangerous had he focussed more on a two circle fight. Nevertheless, very well done and thanks for putting it on YT 👍

      Yeah, thats more an AI issue, not knowing the specific relative strengths it has. A human player would not have let me get away with it.

      AFAIK DCS AI heavily relies on energy fighting, and will maneuver essentially based on energy consideration. Once you force it to enter in angle competition .... well, it just won't do it, it'll "just" execute the best maneuver to maximise its energy gain against yours.

      If you research the a P47 and its performance. The P47s turn rates vs 109 variants, the P47 is equal to or just behind them depending on altitude in a two circle fight. However, the 109s have a far superior instant turn rate, the 109 would favor a 1 circle fight. I don't think any sim accurately simulates P47s or P51s. IL 2 I think nailed the P51 I guess but the P47 feels nothing like it should in that sim.

      Someone sorta got to it before me but the best situation for a Bf-109 against a P-47 was a one-circle fight. The P-47 actually had a pretty good turn RATE, (a better turn rate than the Bf 109), so it would favor a two circle fight where it could get its nose around faster. The Bf 109 had a better turn RADIUS, (actually at high altitude the P-47 also had a better turn radius than both the Bf 109 and the Fw 190 due to its power advantage, but we're talking mid-low altitude), so the Bf 109 would favor a one-circle fight.

    anecdotal note on my end from flying the 51 vs AI.
    I concur that Veteran AI don't ufo and are typically easy to kill or make odd mistakes (such as in the final fight it insisting the bnz fight was proper vs '47 over a 2 circle fight)
    Switch the AI to 'Ace' and the story radically changes. I prefer the ufo ace AI, they can be overcome but with difficulty. They are amidst changes and my experience in recent years been seen to fly full throttle with rads popped, with engine damaged, climb in excess of 30 minutes at full power (f2 info bar used). In recent times i.e. after damage model update they seem to be able to cheat less but I believe it is still present in a few forms.
    Cheers and thanks for the 47 show, glad to see you won't change your ways of the spitfire getting so close with guns. If you train that sight really does work. And so do the 50's at convergence around 1000ft.

    I've always felt the P-47 doesn't get the praise it deserves. Always in the shadow of the P-51. And yet it was the P-47 that was taking the fight to the luftwaffe in 1942/43 when the luftwaffe was still an effective fighting force. The only thing that hampered it was its poor range. That big Pratt and Whitney R2800 double wasp was a thirsty beast. And even with drop tanks could only get to the German border. But with the use of proper tactics. Thunderbolt pilots were able to inflict unsustainable losses on thevLuftwaffe. killing off German pilots faster then they could be trained. These loss rates caused the German's to concentrate their fighter defenses round Germany itself. Freeing up air space over much of Europe. Allowing the Allies to achieve total air supremacy over France. Giving them a decisive advantage when Operation Overlord was launched on June 6th 1944.
    By the time the P-51C/D models became available in sufficient numbers. The Luftwaffe was a shadow of its former self. With many of its pilots poorly trained and inexperienced. While yes it was the P-51 that finished off the Luftwaffe downing an astonishing 4950 aircraft. It was the Thunderbolt that wounded and crippled the German fighter groups when they were at their strongest in the first place.

    • @danraymond1253
      @danraymond1253 3 роки тому +4

      I agree with many of the things you said. However I can't help myself but be an ass and correct two things. The Thunderbolt's first mission was in March 1943, so sadly it never saw combat in any part of 1942. Secondly, the Thunderbolt did have a pretty good range. It was fairly mediocre without drop tanks, but with drop tanks it could go very far. Do not take my word for it, but I do believe I have read in multiple sources that the Thunderbolt was the first Allied fighter over Berlin, (maybe it was the Lightning, I can't remember). The main reason it has been noted as having poor range is due to cover-ups in for the bomber mafia heading the eighth air force. For more info look up part six of Greg's Airplanes and Automobiles eight part series on the P-47 Thunderbolt. He explains it better than I ever could. Now don't get me wrong, the Thunderbolt's range was never quite as good as the Mustang's, (until the N model in the Pacific where it was far superior), but it was never far behind and was certainly not as bad as it's portrayed. All around it's a great plane that deserves more attention.

    Very useful video and comments. I’d love to see more technical insight into the different planes like this. I have been training with the AI as well, particularly turning off LABELS, as I learned that I was relying on the label moving underneath or behind the plane and frames, so I was deadly precise in my turns. If you take away the labels, there is a whole new layer of maneuvering complexity that I was completely lacking. My improvements show on the PvP arena.

    I am a WWII history buff and when the new Normandy map came out I was hooked. I just downloaded it along with the WWII asset pack and my choice of first warbird to master is the P47 Jug. I was debating hard between it and the Mustang, also the Spitfire and Mosquito. But from what I have seen and read, the Jug is the best general purpose bird and the best starting platform to enter the warbird arena. So now I am devouring all the Jug content I can get to improve. Glad I found this channel. Liked and subbed.

I wonder how it handled the 109 and 190? I guess we'll see. Did they stop to fight, or just use her speed to get the hell out? She was more a bomber than fighter, I think.

    Another thing that annoys me is how ED modeled the .50s like pop guns. They do NO damage and just spark and look flashy. Nothing like how they work in real life. Of course all the other warbirds have cannons, so they just shred you to pieces with a few rounds. Yet in the 47 and 51 you have to literally put dozens and dozens of rounds into the target before it will actually go down. So so annoying.

  • @kalbuth

    Thanks for th video. Was your constant use of flaps in turns a thing in the real Jug? Doesn't it hamper speed too much? I've always staed away from too much flaps usage, probably a huge mistake on my part

    • @philstyle
      @philstyle  3 роки тому +1

      I'm fairly confident that pilots were not dropping flap historically to increase turn performance. DCS does not model the damage to aircraft that comes with high-speed flap deployment as far as I can tell, on all modules.
      The benefits of flap (lift + drag) over speed seem to be mainly relevant for a game where losing doesn't really matter.

    Would be nice if they gave the US fighters their historical performance. My understanding is that the P-47 is only running on 56"HG Wet WEP, which is ~500hp lower than what it was using months before any 109K4 was in the air.

    • @philstyle
      @philstyle  3 роки тому +1

      That higher power setting was achieved with 150 octane fuel. The HEAF decided to not use the 150 octane fuel for overlord. So on the Normandy map, the 56" power setting is applicable.
      The chaps running escorts further into Germany were using it.

      @@philstyle If you're talking about historical accuracy, the 109K4 didn't enter service until after the whole of France was liberated (Oct., 1944). It would not have been present for Operation Overlord over Normandy. Seeing a 109k4 fight a 56"HG over Normandy is largely ahistorical, especially considering that the initial 109K4s were using reduced engine settings compared to what I think the K4's in DCS are using. Basically, you have a possibly early-1945 fighter fighting in a mission that occurred at least half a year before its introduction. (I could be mistaken about the K4 engine settings in DCS, though).
      I understand that certain P-47 squadrons were not using 150 octane fuel after its entry to service, but the 8th Air Force was, and P-47s regularly adopted secondary patrol missions after they had completed their escort duties. It's not unlikely that a 70"HG P-47 would intercept 109s over France / Normandy on his way back to Britain.
      So if you're going to allow a fighter to time travel back in time to participate in a mission that occurred half a year before its entry to service, it only makes sense that fighters running engine settings of the time that were likely to be present for that mission should also be available.

      @BromanP47 3 роки тому

      @@philstyle 70"HG P-47 and 75"HG P-51 were operational in high numbers in May / June of 1944. I don't think you can honestly categorize them as being a slippery slope to 1945. A 109K4 and a 190 Dora are much closer to 1945 (if not actually running with 1945 engine settings).
      If you wanted a historical representation of Operation Overlord, you would have
      US
      56"HG P-47s loaded with ground ordnance,
      70"HG P-47s with no ordnance flying fighter sweeps,
      67"HG p-51s loaded with ground ordnance
      75"HG P-51s with no ordnance flying fighter sweeps,
      Versus 109Gs and Fw190Antons.
      As it currently is, you have ahistorically gimped US fighters flying against ahistorically advanced fighters, which by my understanding leaves the US fighters completely outclassed. A 1.98ATA K4 is a difficult challenge for even the boosted US fighters. Against the gimped US fighters, the gap in performance is significant.
