I live near Seattle and purchased my used 2011 Nissan Leaf in 2016 for $7999. Then I had the dealership install a 2016-era battery for $4000 so now I get about 100 miles after each charge. I've only used the 110 VAC charger that comes free with the car to charge it. There has been absolutely no maintenance ever needed. It's fun to thumb my nose at the gas stations as I drive by. This year 2022 in March we had solar panels installed on our house and our monthly bills have been $0, $0, $24, and $16 for the last 4 months. This includes charging the car, air conditioning the house, cooking, mowing the lawn, etc. In conclusion, I'm a happy camper!
Which dealership did you use for your battery upgrade? I have a 2012 I live near Seattle and I want to upgrade my battery

I also bought the cheapest Leaf available in my area 4 years ago. It was supposed to be a 1 year test and I still daily drive my Nissan Leaf 2014. I do a 40 mile roundtrip commute. This is the best commuters car, very low cost of ownership.
I've owned 2 LEAF's(2013 and 2017) and have a 60 mile roundtrip commute. I love how cheap it is to drive.
I feel represented. I have a 2012 Leaf with full bars. I love my Leaf. Bought it just over a year ago for $6000. Best car I've ever bought so far. I'm also a professor, which I thought was funny. Lol

Had a used leaf for nearly six flawless years. Great car. Underated as a city car. Sold it this summer for as much as I paid for it.

Bought our '13 leaf used in '16 with 26,000 miles and now has 109,000 miles. My daughter's customary leaf spotting when she was 3-4; was to sing "Leaf Buddy! Do do do do YEAH!"
It's a fantastic second car for a 2 car household. Just bought a 2020 Niro EV in May 2021, already 25,000 miles on the Niro.
This just warmed my heart. I have the exact same car. 2012 LEAF SL. It still has 66% SOH and I could not be happier. I completely agree with you, this car is amazing. Once you get the onboard charger fixed you plug in at home in the evening and it's ready every morning. It is the best car I ever owned. Never gonna sell it. Enjoy the LEAF!
also to add, when the battery does degrade to the point of un-usability, it would be amazing to see a recycling video with Redwood Materials. This will give insight to the entire EV close loop system. So many EV haters will continue to hate and talk down about what happens when the battery is no good. This process might help to shed light on the matter. Keep up the great content.
A friend recently bought a Leaf for $2200 Net in Oregon.
She bought a 2012 Leaf SL from the local dealer, excellent condition, 69% SOH with about 60 miles range.
The key is that Oregon offers a Charge Ahead rebate for low income families (low income is under 4x the poverty line) so purchase price was $7000 and after a little paperwork and a few months waiting she got a $5000 refund from the state. Additionally there was about $200 in registration transfer and EV fee, no sales tax here.
She loves it, it's a comfy car with heated steering wheel and seats, and when she wanted to go to Seattle, we swapped with my Tesla model 3. Yes, that's privilege, but a rental car also would have sufficed for those rare long trips.

I bought a used 2015 Leaf SL about 5 years ago. I currently have almost 97,000 miles and LeafSpy says I have about 14% battery degradation with full bars. I live in the PNW so that helps, but they’ve improved the battery chemistry from the 2011 models to help with longevity. Only maintenance I’ve done is put in a new $20 cabin air filter. I’m sure I’m due for some basic maintenance, but overall it still drives great!
I had a 2013 Leaf SL in Vegas, yeah it went down to 2 bars from 5 when I got it used, The heat killed it fast. Only had 54k miles
Nissan claimed they changed the chemistry to fix the degradation but the only way to actually fix it is to add some kind of active cooling. The van built on the same platform (the NV200) at least had active air cooling but even that is inadequate over the life of a car. Liquid cooling is the standard and Nissan just stuck their heads in the sand and ignored the problem. Nissan did improve the chemistry and I'm pretty sure you can find plenty of cold climate (like the UK) LEAFs with reasonable battery deg. But you won't find any in hotter zones barring the new ones which haven't had time to degrade much.
2015 Owner here with 80k miles. If you want a 0.5 kWh improvement, replace the gear reduction fluid. I used synthetic Amsoil ATF.
I have a 2011 that has 107k miles. Nissan replaced the battery in 2013 at 60k miles. Still has 11 bars. Never dcfc'd still shows 80 miles of range but realistically I can get 60 miles with no problem. I bought it for 4500. Clean tittle. Besides a few scratches and dents it's perfect. I think he got a bad deal. I bought mine 3 months ago.
@@JoseGonzalez-wt1do I have a 2015 in Perth Australia 🦘. Very hot here and I have managed to get the temperature into the red a few times. Lost 2 bars from new and 66000 klms. It's a Japanese import so very cheap 20k AUD. It was also nismo chipped to do 100 kph in 9 second's. It's awesome. No maintenance ever since it left the factory. All books never been opened 😂. I put a new under bonnet battery only. 2 years owned.
I purchased a 2015 Nissan Leaf and it was the best purchase I ever made. It was when Nissan was getting rid of them , for the new generation Leaf. Sticker was $37,750 and sold it to me for $24,000 out the door with 0% interest. I could go on all day about how cheap this car has been to own. I will never get rid of it. I love the looks of my Leaf , also. Yes , even the bulbous headlight lenses. Thank you for this video.👍❤

I’m forgetting his name but I’m excited for your newest employee to be daily driving this for several months. I would love to see the process of getting a refurbished battery back and switching out the battery. Would be quite the saga, great content.
Kyle- Check the passenger side front suspension strut. These cars have a problem with a rain drain in the wiper spindle that dumps water directly into the top of the suspension strut connection and causes it to rust through there. Access via a small plastic mesh triangle. Always needs to be cleaned out and protected with grease and a lid to stop future water in there. Driver side in USA will be OK.
I would love to see a battery upgrade video! Something we will all have to know in 10 years!
I bought a 2012 LEAF 18 months ago and I love it. It was a bit shagged out at 80k miles and 58% SOH but we’ve gotten 10k miles of use out of it. Including $800 for new tires and brakes we’ve spent $3100 on the car. The $200 yearly penalty Ohio gives EVs for registration is actually significant to the overall running costs of the car. 😂
Good job, Kyle and Alyssa!! I’m really glad you’re covering cars that practically everyone can afford and showing that they have a lot going for them. I hope you’ll soon be able to repair the charger and upgrade the battery AND have videos of those projects.
This is an important video for the future of EV's. Really good public service to show people that Used EV cars will become a viable affordable option.

@@ILOVEBACONBOY2018 I bought a used Leaf in 2016 for $10k. Owned it for 6 years. Put LESS than $1k in maintenance (mostly tires), in 6 years and then traded it in for $7k. And, it cost less than $50 a month to fuel. So....for 6 years, including insurance, maintenance, and fuel, it cost me around $250 a month. And HALF that was insurance.
Meanwhile, my parents have a Versa hatchback, and spent almost that much a month just in gas. Not to mention the insurance, maintenance and car payment.
We bought a used 2015 Leaf in 2017. We loved it. We had it for 5 years till we traded it for a Chevy Bolt. When we traded it was a month and 1/2 from 8 years old and the battery was at 80% health. We had lost 1 bar. The only maintenance we did was tires, wipers and the 12 volt battery. It met all our needs as a daily driver. We only traded it because its trade in value was high and the GM dropped the price of the new Bolts by $5,900. I would recommend a used leaf as long as you know the battery state and that your daily driving fits within is range. We found we got real world rang of low 70s in the non winter times and low 50s in the winter. Mostly city driving.
Am an original owner of a 2011 Leaf. I haven't fast charged the battery pack yet (use my garage 240V charger), but even after 11 years I still get 70 mile range on it (and still get all bars). The only maintenance I've had to deal with over that whole time was a flat tire, one accessory battery, two key fob batteries, replaced brake fluid, and just recently needed to get a water pump replaced (total maintenance cost ~$2000 for 11 years). The way to keep the battery in good condition is to never leave the Leaf fully charged for long periods of time, or just charge to 80%. Always if fully charged make sure your drive gets it down to 80% if you park it overnight.

@@Javaman92 I should also mention that the car is garaged and sometimes I have to charge the accessory battery (always disconnect the terminals when doing this) if I leave the car parked for long periods of time.

I love this series. You do influence people and I hear all the time that evs are just too expensive. It’s 2 things. 1. There are affordable evs and 2. The use case for an everyday car. It will be important for this car to get the charger fixed for overnight charging at home. We have a Mini Cooper se and I hear from people that the 114 range is t enough. Yet we drive it more than our model Y. It’s the go to grocery getter or around town car. We rack up the miles on it and have never had any issue with range it’s full every night
Yep. No special trips for gas anymore which saves more time than people let on most of the time.

its not the range im worried about its the battery and the electronics controlling it if the battery goes your talking $5000-$6000 just for the battery and thats not including the labor
@@abbeytim22 batteries will probably last a long time, but cost even more than that. It would be a good government program to subsidize and control battery replacements to keep used EVS out of junk yards

these are the reviews we need. show people evs are affordable and usable even with lower ranges
I see a lot of Leafs on islands like in the San Jauns of WA state. The fact that it has short range isn't a problem as they are small islands and gas is very expensive since they have to pay a driver to bring a tank truck over on a ferry.
I was in Juneau last spring, saw a couple of Teslas, more Bolts and quite a few Leafs. Leaf is a good choice on an island with only 82 miles of roads.
Welcome to the Leaf family. I have driven over 95000 leaf miles between two cars, (I rolled up at the end of my lease to a leaf with a bigger battery) It isn't my only car, but it usually goes where I need to go and is nimble in traffic.
A few year old Leaf would be cheap and awesome for a 16 year old. No maintenance to speak of and the range doesn't matter since all they do is drive to school and a local job.

@@rp9674 That was my wife’s commute plus a mile or two. A Leaf is a screwdriver, not a hammer. A used Leaf is a smart move if it’s the car that FITS your needs.

I recall one of the UK channels, they removed the pack and only replaced 4 swollen cells and were able to recover a substantial battery capacity, so that is another far more cost effective option

We bought a 2013 leaf in 2020 for our daughter’s first car. No regrets it’s been great and zero maintenance other than tires. Great for going around town to school etc.

Seeing good viable EVs on the used market is probably the most important part of the transition to electric. Dreaming of expensive supercars is fun, but not practical for most people. For each $5k reduction, you double your market (available buyers) - so this is super important. Third party battery swaps are going to be critical as well since I'm sure this is well beyond the OEM's warranty - and they would charge you a crap ton for an official replacement.
We need an incentive program for battery swaps to keep these vintage EVS on the road, & 3rd party shops
Wow. I meant to reply yesterday when your review went up. Life happens, and i did not get to it until today (less than 24 hours later) and you already have 255 comments. This is EXACTLY what we want. Yes, replace the charger, yes clean it up, maybe fix the dent etc. This is what we want to see. It is different and interesting. These are "classic" electric cars. They are legends!
Don’t love or agree with many decisions Nissan made with the original Leaf and the future of their EV program. However they are the reason me and my family been full electric since 2013. Started with 2013 Nissan leaf. Then it led to 2014 Toyota RAV4EV. 2013 Model S, 2016 Model X. 2019 Model 3, and now a 2022 Model S Plaid.

All of the LEAFs ended up in Bellingham, WA and Fort Collins, CO. They’re great little cars despite the battery woes. A 2012 SL is what got me started on EVs.
We drive the 2016 Leaf and we LOVE it!! We get it man. Thank you for the video and some focus on affordable EVs.
Easy fix for the side panel dent. Put in a deflated soccer ball and inflate it and it will push out the side panel cleanly.
Looking forward to the continuing experience videos, the upgrades, possible battery swap and even the cleaning of the interior! Got me thinking about finding a cheap EV as our run around...."Leaf spotting in the Fall" ... that was fun.
Nissan Leaf for day2day driving & rental car for road tripping-people road trip once in a blue moon.
And, the road trip need not even necessarily be a rental car. If you live in a two-car-two-adult household, the road trip can simply be made in the other car.
Also, my personal experience is that a lot of the road trips I have taken began with a plane flight to the starting point, so the road trip is going to be done in a rental car anyway - the owned car simply needs enough range to get to the airport and back, for which the old Leaf is likely plenty.

Yes, I totally agree. I had a used Leaf and liked it so much I traded it in for a new 2020 SL extended range (216 miles) with all options, sticker $43,000, after all the dealer, Nissan and tax incentives it was $28,000, and the gave me $8,000 for my used Leaf, so about $20,000!! My only regret was trading in the old Leaf because it was the perfect 2nd car.
The Leaf red is AMAZING. I'm biased because I have a red 2013 Leaf SL. :) They also look pretty spiffy with the SL rims (I'm not sure why yours seemingly has the SV rims. Perhaps it was an option). I've only lost 2 bars so far. Sometimes when the weather is good it will still report 65 miles on the guess-o-meter. SV and SL had the heat pump after certain years as well as "B" mode. Thanks you for doing this series. I hope it does well enough for you to continue spending the time on this project!
62 kWh battery pack upgrade is possible but also requires suspension upgrade and its not easy sourcing a donor battery, but watching a series on upgrades would be great, whether its economically viable for a regular owner is debatable though.
A 40 kwh upgrade is more sensible. Still a huge upgrade from 24 kwh.

I have a 2013 SL in blue with black leather heated seats, heated steering wheel, heat pump, NAV etc. It still has 11 bars (131 km) and after 50 weeks I still love it! The issue is I paid $1700 + tax CDN (like $1200 USD) after rebates and currently they are selling for 10 TIMES that price and I'm still considering keeping it! I must be crazy!
Love my Nissan Leaf! 9 years and still happy with it's great fuel economy and lack of maintenance.
Since you are now focusing on more than high 5 figure and low 6 figure bleeding edge tech cars... I look forward to you finally getting a Equinox EV when they're released. Don't let them given you one with every stinking option. I'd love to see you test the cheapest one that can be had with AWD. (Hey no AWD you might as well get a Bolt EUV.)
We got an 2015 Leaf SL with all the options (Bose and the 360 camera) a few years ago for $8500. It still has 10 bars and it’s an AWESOME around town car. Just have to buy tires and wipers for it…

Bought one recently in the same exact color as a second car, 11 bars out of 12, with about 130k km on it, it's the lowest trim but still has heated seats front and back along with heated steering wheel and a 6.6kw charger. paid the equivalent of about 10k US for it , replaced the girlfriends old Rav4 with it, which was expensive to run, We use our Model Y for all longer trips but the Leaf is fine for her going to work
I'd love to see the info about putting a bigger battery in it.
Yay, awesome video series! Our beater/ grocery/ dog car is a 2013 Leaf. Heats up quick in winter, heated steering wheel is super toasty. Free EV charging and parking at the dog park. Gotta love it!

This car is like the quintessential "teenager's first car". It gets them to school, to work, to a local friend's house, and charges up at home. Is it the safest car? No but used for under $5k is a great deal.
Good video. We leased a Leaf almost a decade ago and drove it for three years. It was a really good car. We live in a hot area and did lose a some battery capacity but it definitely met our day to day needs at a very low cost. The interior was particularly nice -- roomy and comfortable. And the ride was very smooth.
Cool video! I’d definitely be interested in later on switching out the battery pack and using the old one has storage.

We are almost ready to use our 24 kWh pack as Storage (paired with a Growatt SPH inverter). Our Leaf is now equipped with a 40 kW pack and extra Porsche Taycan cells. Total of 85 kW gives us a range of about 300 miles depending on your right foot...

I had one of those and it was great. Now i have a 2021 leaf and it is quite a bit more useful. The range gets me to a lot more places and back without charging and its a lot nicer inside with better controls. the leaf is definanately underrated
About 2 3/4 years ago, I bought my 2016 Nissan Leaf. (Jan 2020) I use for my food delivery job. when I bought it had about 55,000 Km on it. Now it is over 104,000 Km.

LEAFs are great runabout vehicle for city driving. We had a 2013 SL, that had its original battery warrantied, due to degradation. We later swapped to a 2018 SL. We rather use it for grocery run than our 2020 Model 3 SR+.

I'm loving Leaf life, myself. As someone who has identified as a conservationist, but has lived on the poverty line for most of my life, I dreamed of a day when electric cars would be here, but could in no way afford one when they came around.
About 2 years ago, I found my li'l red Leaf on an Edmunds search for only $5k with 9 bars. I basically used my wife and my stimulus money to buy it and finally got to fulfill my that long time dream. I couldn't have found it at a better time, as not long after gas prices went crazy and that $5k investment seemed to be paying for itself quite nicely. As a large human being, I do find it a little bit of a squeeze, but I really like this little guy. I now long for the day when used EVs become the norm and I can get something with some range left in it that fits me better. Until that day it's #LeafLife for me.

I don't think they ever will. They'll move on and the Leaf will become a footnote in EV history. I think it's done damage to the reputation of both Nissan and EVs in general.

We loved our 2011. When it was totalled we bought a new 2021 LEAF SV. Love the LEAF! No issues for 8 years of LEAFs. This is why I only buy Nissans since 1985.
I bought a 2012 Chevy volt in June 2021 for $9500 including taxes. IT runs like its brand new, mainly in EV mode. Still gets its original EPA of 38 miles just like when it was new 11 years ago. It has almost 112,000 miles, some dings and dents, etc. When it needs to switch to gas it switches over no problem and continues on. It had 100% oil life in June 2021. It still has about 50 ish percent oil life on the engine and I’ve put 22,000 miles on it. Overall no complaints. Never use gas when just going around town. I do like being able to fall back on gas if needed and not have to deal with charging for like road trips and stuff. I have reviews of it on my channel.
Do you have any problems with the gas going funky?
@@jimparr5412 Great question, I only keep my tank like 1/4 full cause I go many weeks without needing to use gas! It does get slightly funky, after a month or so I’ll run the battery down and use the engine/generator for a bit to use some of the gas and cycle it through.
@@jimparr5412 The volt has a sealed and pressurized gas tank to keep the fuel from off gassing. It also has an automatic monthly engine run cycle to circulate oil and use some gas. Then it has a yearly maintenance engine run to use enough gasoline to require replacing a few gallons of fresh gas. Our 2013 was a perfect way to travel to out of the way places that might not have charging available but never need gas for months for usual weekly travel. Upgrade to PHEV BMW X5 hybrid SUV to get more space and haven’t put gas in it for 7 months since coming back from 800+ mile road trip. It is our daily driver.

I thought of putting a 12 volt battery pack to power an alternate heating source. It gets mighty cold in there if you don't use the heat. And the range suffers greatly from the cold. Even not using the heat. You'll get the best mileage driving 45 in ECO. I loved being able to hear the birds chirping and the crickets cricketing as I cruised the back roads during my frequent joyrides.
Kyle, I'm buying a 2013 LEAF and I am soooooo excited to own it! Can't wait, picking it up tomorrow! Please let us know when you do research on the new battery...mine has 48,000 miles and the battery bars are at 7, so I know that will be down the road. Thanks for the video!

In oregon there is a place in Portland for battery upgrades upto the 63k battery. We also got a used 2015 nissan to try ev and we love it it has 8 bars left and we get between 60 to 72 miles
Provably a Wallbox Quasar charger is cheaper than fixing the onboard charger, and you have a pretty cool bidirectional Chademo charger as well!
Great video. I live in the UK and have been on a V2G trial with OVO for over three years and with two Nissan Leafs. You mentioned that your car cannot AC charge but you can get DC home chargers like I use for the V2G. Maybe that might be worth looking into as you don't have to use the V2G facility. I look forward to more videos as I considered buying a cheap Leaf mainly to use as a "mobile" battery for use in my V2G system but could double as a spare car :-)

I bought a 2012 Nissan leaf to replace one of my two ICE vehicles, and it was a great investment. I only paid like 10k for it, and it had zero battery degradation.
I think at a price point of $3750, you got a steal! This car should be in every two car household, and be your local commuter car. Not only is it cheap, but it is pretty spacious too. With gas prices sky rocketing, you are winning!
Nice review. We have a 2012 Leaf in Australia for urban driving and it does its job brilliantly. About the same battery specs as yours on (down to 8 bars and 65% SoH). 40 kwH battery upgrades are slowly be becoming available in our part of the world as well. EVEnhanced in NZ is working on repacking Leaf batteries and adding active thermal management. Very exciting. For longer trips we have our Startrooper white M3. Love you work. Cheers.
We've had a 2015 for over 4 years now. There is so much hate for the Leaf online, but ours has been so reliable. Tires and 12v is all we've done in almost 40k miles. LeafSpy shows 82% state of health at nearly 50k miles and 8 years of age.
Love this series! My GOAT in town drive is a 2016 SL Leaf I bought for permanent loan to my 84-year-old MIL. It had only 16k miles when I bought it in June and drove for 2 weeks before passing it on. Paid more than $3750 but it was and is PERFECT. Do check the lube on front bearings if you hear click/clunk on acceleration/deceleration because may need grease as ours did. Simple fix.

I currently have a 2011 ( need battery) and I’m leasing a 2022 (range amazing only need to change it once a week, love the 360 camera, swear it doesn’t have the oomph the other one had).

We found with our 2017 LEAF that if you just trn on the lowest fan speed and hit the Heat or AC button it is the best mode for either regarding the battery. Loved our 2017 so much we have two 2019 LEAFs, a Plus model and a standard model.
We had a 2013 Leaf and bow have 2 2019 Leaf Pluses. Best in Pairs.
It would be awesome if a CCS swap was possible on the Leaf.
Everything is possible, people have done this before but the parts are expensive.

12:24 you can fit everything into this, even 62kwh. But then you need to upgrade shocks n stuff a bit too, as it's heavier. Since you have gen1, any bigger battery will take a bit of fitting adjustment and then a can-bridge. Start hunting for good 40kwh battery deal :)
Leaf has 4 battery sizes, 24, 30, 40, 62.
And pls no recycle, this battery can do a lot of stationary storage work for another 10 years. (not too hard to find ppl who will pay ~2k for ~13kwh storage, if not going to use yourself)
Pro tip for winter from a former Leaf owner: wear heavy coat and only use seat heater for heat, or you’ll barely make it around town with 9 bars left 😄
I have a 2013 Leaf with 10 of the 12 bars still available. No fast changing for me. At night I plug it in to a regular household outlet and in the morning it’s topped off with the guessometer range indicating about 75 miles. I live in Florida so we don’t get much cold weather to deal with so a heated steering wheel and heated seats is usually enough. This car has been fantastic.
I bought a 2020 Leaf S Plus and am almost loving it. It has almost 15,000 miles on it after owning it for close to a year. In the first 30 days a battery module failed and had to be replaced, no cost to me. I already own a 2016 Soul EV (you should try it Kyle!) and we love it. I agree, there are lots of EVs out there at lots of price points!
