    £30,000 ain't "cheap", amigo - £5,000 is cheap(as in "you'll have to move to China") and £20,000 could probably be described as "affordable" for 50% or so of consumers - depending on country, region, income and how much easy money/wealth you have inherited.

  • @stephenclutton
    @stephenclutton Рік тому +4

    We really do need to move on from the obsession with range. It just isn't relevant to 95% of journeys. Efficiency, which isn't even mentioned on this test, is far more important in most cases.

    • @siraff4461
      @siraff4461 Рік тому +1

      The problem is that those 95% of journeys don't include the 5% where range makes the most difference of any metric with an ev. You can't just ignore that these things can't do a family holiday because it's not very often - thats usually part of what a family car will be expected to do.
      Try getting a couple of toddlers, a wife and all the junk in one and see how wonderful an experience it is trying to find chargers, hoping they work then sitting there trying to keep everyone happy for an hour at a time just to get to the next charger and repeat.
      There are lots of scenarios where range matters a lot but not many where acceleration does - yet we keep hearing that banged on about on almost every electric review.
      As for efficiency - by the time electricity has been made in the power station running at around 58% efficiency, gone to the transformer, been conducted down the power lines, got to the local box, transformed again, sent to the house, sent to the charger, sent to the car's battery then to the drive control module then the motor, how efficient is that 95% efficient electric motor we keep hearing about again? Remember at each stage it will lose between 3% and 5% with some charging losing as much as 10%.
      My plug-in has an engine efficiency of 45% and an overall system efficiency of 37%. Its also not carrying 600kg of batteries around which will only be used to their capacity a few times per year yet does pretty much all its running about on elelctricity.
      Maybe we should lose the obsession with battery only and be a little more pragmatic in our transport solutions.
      For instance the Mini and MX in this test both have available tech for range extenders whcih would then make them not only the best use of the batteries (less wasted capacity in daily use) but also by far the best for longer journeys.

    • @stephenclutton
      @stephenclutton Рік тому

      @@siraff4461 hi Simon, you are right with your comment about family holidays. That is a massively important use case. Your scenario with wife, toddlers etc is a stretch though. Your charge to the next charger or destination is unlikely to delay you by an hour at a time. I'm about to head to Cornwall from Cheshire and will only need to stop to charge for 26 minutes from a 95% starting SoC. That will leave me with 50% SoC on arrival. Over that journey I will need to stop more frequently and for longer than the car will.
      I get what you say about the end to end efficiency of electricity generation (I wonder what it is for fossil fuels). Improvements are definitely needed there. What I meant in my comment was the efficiency once the car is charged. We should be looking at at least 4 miles/kWh. It's essentially the equivalent of mpg. It's not discussed for BEV but always is for ice.
      There is a trade off with the weight carried by BEVs and two drivetrains carried by a hybrid. You are potentially carrying a redundant drivetrain during posts of a journey when you are on ICE only or battery only power.
      Hope that makes sense.
      Good to chat.
      Cheers 😊

      @@siraff4461 For the times that you need the special car for the holiday and all the luggage, you can hire one.
      If you honestly believe that your petrol engine is 45% efficient, you've never studied thermodynamics!
      A petrol vehicle consumes half as much electricity per mile as an EV due to fuel refining, distribution and operations. Now that the fuel is finally in your car, it is woefully inefficient compared to an EV.
      Agree that EV isn't the one solution for everyone, that's why I have several cars, they all do different things.

    • @siraff4461
      @siraff4461 Рік тому

      @@stephenclutton In my experience 4mi/kWh is only possible in certain uses and certain vehicles. For instance my model S would hit (well 4.3 ish) that if driven carefully but on the motorway was usually around 2.7-3.0 and my Zoe could just nudge 5 on a good day but late 3's were the norm and on a motorway under 3 unless it was perfect conditions and sticking behind trucks.
      My plug-in is indeed carrying redundant components some of the time but not so many as you might think. For instance it uses a cvt which also acts as the gear reduction for the electric motor so its always in use. The motor also acts as the ice's starter motor and alternator so again aren't duplicated.
      All up weight is only 100kg more than the ice version with identical boot space - though with no spare wheel option.
      Around 4 mi/kWh is normal and it can get a little more if I'm careful because the battery stuff is all lower speed, around town. It also easily gets 55mpg once the battery is flat with well over 60mpg if driven slowly or on a steady motorway run.
      I mention the wife and toddlers because that has been my situation quite often in the past - where my gen 1 Leaf was certainly a no-go.

      @@djtaylorutube Great speech there. You might want to fact check yourself on that though.
      Especially the bits where you make the claim about the engine (it's the Atkinson cycle 2.5 if you want to reference it) not being 45% efficient and where you seem to think the electricity in an ev magically apears in its battery by fairies tickling it.
      As for studying thermodynamics? Not as a core subject. But it was part of one of my degrees.
      I do find it funny how you keep popping up on every electric car video making silly claims and trying to tell everyone that ev's are the only possible way forward.
      You're obviously invested but do us all a favour and at least try to refrain from making false claims and/or ignoring obvious points to suit yourself. Its simply not helpful.

    Well done for getting so many cars to compare. My one gripe is the choice of zero to sixty mph as a metric. It dates from half a century ago, before electronic recorders. it was easy to measure, but doesn't represent any facet of normal driving, except perhaps the traffic light grand prix, which most of us grew out of quite early on in our driving lives. Acceleration is particularly important in overtaking and in filtering into fast moving traffic, as in joining a motorway. How about 30-60, or 40-70? These would certainly reflect my driving experience. Do other people agree, or am I just getting old and grumpy?

    • @FFVoyager
      @FFVoyager Рік тому

      Acceleration tests are fun with supercars and pointless with affordable EV's. In reality you will go fast enough to lose your licence in the slowest car here. What matters more is how much stuff you can get in the back, the 'luxury' additions (How good is the heated steering wheel? How the traffic assist works?) and not infantile 0-60 times.

      Initial acceleration matters every time you pull away so out of junctions, off roundabouts and so on. Carrying that on to 60mph shows what its going to be like to merge onto faster roads, overtake and so on.
      Its also a metric which has been recorded for almost every car for decades so it allows an easy, at-a-glance comparisson.
      I would say it's more relevant on slower cars. Faster stuff is fast enough anyway but some of the slower things can take an age to get to speed and if you use a lot of faster roads daily that may be a big pain.
      You can merge safely in anything but its a lot easier and arguably safer in something which has more ability.

      @@siraff4461 thank you for the response. I think we agree that slow acceleration can be dangerous. My own driving makes little use of fast standing starts, but involves much overtaking on narrow, twisty roads. I can see different road conditions can change perspective.

    • @siraff4461
      @siraff4461 Рік тому +1

      @@cnocspeireag I can't really say its dangerous per se because one of my vehicles is a Transit minibus. I have no idea what its claimed 0-60 time is but its probably in the 20's before loading it up and a lot longer when its full. Its never been a problem but it does mean being a lot more careful and planning ahead a lot more.
      A couple of things then jump out - the Transit is much higher up and has a much better field of view than any car I've ever been in so you have a lot more vision to deal with that situation straight from the off and secondly its an 8ft tall, massive white thing that people are expecting to be going slowly so generally they give it a fair bit of space anyway.
      So slow acceleration in that isn't dangerous. In a normal car which people are expecting to get out of the way and not giving much room I can see it getting dangerous pretty easily.
      In your situation where you're trying to overtake in small spaces then slow acceleration is very much a safety concern. Of course the wombles would say just drive slowly behind whatever it is but those of us with places to be would say thats not practical for a lot of todays lifestyles.

It has to be looked at as a different beast to your combustion engine car; not many people are regularly driving over this range on any one journey all the time, and I'd imagine after driving for a few hours you'd want to stop for a break anyway, in which time these cars can rapidly charge up again.

    I don' think that "What Car" or the Car Industry in-general can grasp the term "Cheap Car" !!
    A cheap or affordable brand-new car (for the average person on the average UK income) would be priced somewhere between £10K and £15K. The average annual income in the UK is between £25K and £28K.
    Given inflation and the huge rise in household energy costs, few people (if any) can afford a car which cost the equivalent of a year's wages.
    Given the complexity and costs of making an internal combustion engined (ICE) car, £30K + for an electric car which (let's face it) is no more than a scaled-up scaleextric car with a battery, is ridiculous !!
    I know that, in recent months , new car sales in the UK have "dropped off a cliff". Such low sales numbers will remain until the car industry starts to realise that they have been ripping the public off for years !!

    Y'all are biased, there's no way the Zoe could be that low in the rank. It should be the first one, or at least top 3. It has a huge range, and plenty of space for how small it is, not to mention it's quite cheap. But also, it can charge up to 22 kw on AC, which is amazing for when the DC spot is taken when you want to charge. I'm saving money for an ev now, and it will definitely be a Zoe. When testing electric cars, there's one aspect that matters more than everything else put together: the range. I would have liked an MG 5 or 4, if they were sold in my country, but I'll have to make do with the Zoe

I feel that people in apartments and terraced houses without off-street parking may be dis-enfranchised from the electric revolution (and forced to consider ICE cars only), once the regulations banning the sale of new ICE cars come into force. Full hybrid is a plausible compromise given the circumstances. So... now far can they go on electric power only?

      Whilst having the ability to charge at home is undoubtedly convenient and the most cost-effective way of charging an EV, depending on your average daily journey, running an EV without home charging is still perfectly viable.
      The average UK 'commute' is less than 10 miles (based on 2019 figures) so all of the EVs in this (frankly, silly...) test would only need a single charge at most once a fortnight - that's about 30-45 minutes of your time at a rapid charger every 14 days... not that dis-enfranchising, really...?

    • @npdarcy123
      @npdarcy123 Рік тому

      @@jonathantaylor1998 Nonetheless, this is something that folk with the ability to home-charge won't have to do. The people with off-street parking are also likely to be able to home-charge more cheaply than those who have to use charging stations all the time. Equilibrium could be restored when charging 'on the road' takes a similar time to refueling an ICE vehicle. If the infrastructure were to be developed and installed quickly, home charging wouldn't be necessary. In all the time I've driven an ICE vehicle, I never once thought that I should have an oil bunker in my garden to refuel it. I'd still stand by my choice of words, dis-enfranchising it is.

      @@npdarcy123 Yes exactly. Not all cars have the same charge speed capacity and that's where it gets important. Example being a Tesla which can charge max AC at 11 kWh even though the type 2 charger may be three phase and offering 22 kWh but then on a Supercharger v3, that's up to 250kWh but not sustained for 100% of the charge duration but profiled depending on SOC. It's a different mindset and trying to explain to Dino juice people that you can actually take a break at the services while the car charges instead of take a break and then go to fill up sequentially. Same at home, plug in and go to sleep Vs get up earlier and detour via the filing station.
      My wife has a knack of leaving vehicles with the fuel light on and since I don't know how long that has been on for, that means my first detour is immediately to the filing station and that isn't just the time it takes to put the nozzle into the filler tube.

    One very serious fact this otherwise (intentionally) slightly frivolous test illustrates is that front wheel drive is NOT suitable for modern EVs. My wife and I drive a ZS EV and a Kia e-Niro - both front wheel drive, and both wheel-spin when trying to pull out into traffic. Electric cars have much greater torque delivery than equivalent legacy cars, combined with much less weight on the front (50/50 weight distribution). This makes front wheel drive unsuitable for these cars. We've just orderd an MG4, which with rear wheel drive can put all of that torque onto the road instantly, for much greater pull-away power and therefore much safer real-world driving!

    • @hoodlum1107
      @hoodlum1107 Рік тому

      Rwd is not an advantage in wet, snowy or icy conditions which is another thing to consider. We have a new Nissan leaf and wheelspin is not an issue, even on winter tyres. If you find yourself doing that, why not drive in eco mode which reduces torque and throttle sensitivity?

    • @dougonutube
      @dougonutube Рік тому +1

      @@hoodlum1107 thanks for your interesting reply - I'm not sure what weight distribution the leaf has, or it's torque figure. Actually, after nearly 3 years of electric driving, wet conditions are worse for the fwd cars, as they wheelspin all the more. Using eco mode is not the answer, as it simply makes the cars more sluggish when pulling out into gaps in traffic. My wife drives her MG ZS EV on eco all the time, as she prefers the more gentle behaviour, but she puts it in normal at junctions, so she has the oomph to pull out when she needs to. Having driven the MG4 (rwd) I'm now absolutely convinced that rwd (or, of course 4wd) is the way to go for modern electric cars.

    And why do we need to know which one is the "fastest" in a straight line? Passenger safety, space and comfort, luggage capacity and ease of parking are far more important to almost every driver out there. Cars are used as practical everyday tools to ferry the children, do the shopping, take the dog for a walk, commute to work, etc.
