For me. Capaldi is the definitive incarnation of the Doctor. Whilst I became a fan during Tennants run, I began my transition at the beginning of Capadi’s run. Ten was my deadname’s doctor. Twelve was MY doctor.
This hits hard. Once the on the edge Doctor, with vanity, at the verge of a dark colapse, with problems. Now, the absolved Doctor, who accepts, and tells us to be kind.
David Tennant as the 10th Doctor was my favourite Doctor until Peter Capaldi absolutely smashed it as 12. He is my favourite Doctor now 😊 (David's 10th Doctor is now second favourite)
I’ve always appreciated that the Twelfth Doctor in this story died, not to win, not to actually stop the threat, but to give the children on Floor 507 just a few minutes to escape.
Honestly I like this take I also like how this episode is the perfect some of twelves character, the war torn old man who will always try to save everyone he won't always be successfully but he'll always try
Twelve is a good person, he's just not necessarily always a nice person. That's a key character trait that I love about him, partially because I see a lot of that in myself. I absolutely adore the development of the character across Capaldi's tenure, culminating in his speech to the two Masters, which you've covered. From "am I a good man?" to becoming, at the end, quite possibly the Doctoriest Doctor that ever Doctored. You said it yourself in the video. What we see in the Series 10 finale is everything the character is and should be, and why Twelve will forever be my Doctor. To any actor who is going to take the role for the next couple of decades to come, *take note of these two episodes.*
Agree with 100% of this. Twelve’s speech to Missy and the Master is my favorite Doctors speech of all time. Much like Gandolf’s “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us” bit, they are words of comfort and conviction when time’s get difficult.
I will always remember when The Doctor was Peter Capaldi. He was my Doctor, he was my musician, he was my professor, he was my warrior, he was my hero, & I didn't want him to go.

I haven’t even watched the video but you are correct (as usual). This is the doctor at peak moral dilemma. The doctor is someone who can be stuck between a rock and a hard place and still find a soft landing for someone, if not everyone. Capaldi sells both the complexity and simplicity of the character so well. Excellent pick! Thanks for the video!
So in the lead up to the 60th Anniversary, Doctor Who Magazine did a poll where all stories in Doctor Who history where ranked worst to best (they did a similar think for the 50th Anniversary). "World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls" finished 2nd overall, above the likes of "Caves of Androzani", "Genesis of the Daleks" and "Blink". While I wouldn't go that far to call it better than Androzani or Genesis it is clear that this story overall is regarded as one the best stories Doctor Who has ever done. Though hilariously it isn't regarded as the best Capaldi story in that list as "Heaven Sent" finished number 1 overall of all Doctor Who stories. It does say something that Capaldi's era has aged even better as time has gone on, and that it gets more and more fans as time goes on.
"It's not because it works, because it hardly ever does" I feel this. I deal with a ton of issues in my life (depression, gender dysphoria, social issues, possibly undiagnosed ADHD or autism, etc) and lots of times it can all feel like too much, "what's the point in even trying when I keep on failing?", stuff like that. But maybe I should be taking the view that anything is worthwhile to do, no matter the outcome. Not because it works, but because you tried. Trying and failing being better than never trying at all. And you won't know what you will succeed at, unless you try lots of different things. Obviously easier said than done when I'm in the dark recesses of depression. But it's a nice personal philosophy to strive towards.
I actually can't pick a favorite scene from this, "stars, I'd hope they'd be stars", the speech, missy & master farewell, "you're wrong you know, I never will be able to find the words" and more!
A beautiful tribute to Doctor Who, The Doctor, Twelve and The Doctor Falls. It got me feeling all emotional ❤️❤️❤️ Twelve’s arc across his run hit deeply for me too. I always love to see it get the love it deserves
Absolutely 100% agree. If I'm pressed to pick a favorite episode I will always pick the Doctor Falls because there are SO MANY great things about it but in particular you hit the nail on the head with how well this episode embodies who the Doctor is and should be. I think part of the crux is that there's never any mystery of how the Doctor will die/regenerate. The tenth doctor had an excellent but an extensive debate on why should he die? Why can't he live? Why must he always die and be a hero for people like Wilf? And I feel like this episode is the perfect response: why does winning matter? Isn't it enough to save someone? There's never really a dilemma for the Doctor, it's just a given because it's who they are. And that speech in particular is my favorite just because it's statements of purpose over and over again until we're just left with "Just kind." The entire episode is truly just a masterclass in writing, acting, and directing. (side note but re: the queer/trans reading of 12: this episode specifically gave me the courage to accept myself as trans and I had no idea at the time why 12's character resonated so much with my transness and queerness. Like I finished watching the episode in tears and then immediately wrote a journal entry where I called myself trans for the first time and it's fascinating to analyze the queerness of 12's era in retrospect and why it resonated so much with so many people so thanks for giving me a bit more to think about
Like most people on this platform I go through cycles of watching a channel religiously for sixth months to a year, then slowly just kind of stop watching them. if you haven't I would highly recommend watching the 3rd doctor's era! I believe Jon Pertwee was a bit younger than Peter Capaldi at the start of his Doctor Who run, but he was at least in his 40s or 50s and he very much has that vibe
Scottish Doctors always hit the high marks. Capaldi and McCoy are amazing. If history is any indicator, Ncuti will be similarly brilliant, fantastic and molto bene! It’s truly amazing to me that every single actor is able to capture that spark that Capaldi embodies in this episode. My all time favorite show Batman is 3 years away from being 60 years old and I love the doctor i even asked for anything doctor who related for gift giving holidays like birthday and Christmas it just shows the staying power of shows like Batman and doctor who that they are still enjoyed today even though we only got new animated movies from the Batman franchise and I’m thankful to have them
Series 10 for me is the TOP TIER series run of episodes the show will have , Series 5 I'd argue also ... Series 6,8 and 9 are up there and love Flux and 12 are great ...but everything in series 10 is the standard of the show that needs to be reached... The way Moff in his final year pushed his creative beats to its ultimate best and this finale is harrowing the Cybermen are my fave monsters and this is them at such a peak ...series 12 close behind ... It's a fascinating study of character and scale in a beautiful way ... I was an emotional mess when this aired ... Classic 💙💙 in a way the show won't ever be again
There's an idea I had to save the Missy arc and timeless trial nonsense. We need a story where the Missy is saved by that agency, and they think she's the doctor and save her. That's the cold open. The story has Gatwa's doc find out that Missy has been going around, trying to do good deeds and calling herself Doctor Who. It gets hinted that At Sacha was a much earlier master. So we can have past masters turn up. At the end of Missy regenerates into Jo Martin's. It can also be implied that the Master is the timeless child, setting us back to no prequel docs and explaining how the Master keeps dodging death.
I’m doing a rewatch of season 10 (my favourite season) and this video perfectly encapsulates everything I’ve thought about it over the last few weeks, the platonic ideal is a great description
World enough and time/the doctor falls is absolutely my favourite two parter of all time, it's so brilliant and I love it. People who left after Matt Smith missed out.
David Tennant as the 10th Doctor was my favourite Doctor until Peter Capaldi absolutely smashed it as 12. He is my #1 favourite Doctor now 😊 (David's 10th Doctor is now second favourite)
even before finding your channel i completely and wholely thought as well that this episode portrays the doctor as his best, just a kind person, willing to put themselves in the line of fire in the hopes that even just a few will survive. With just that little bit of hope that always stays within them. It's my favourite finale
well thanks Vera for making me cry AGAIN and reminding my why Capaldi is ald probably will always be my favorite Doctor. i really need to rewatch his seasons.
Tom was my Doctor growing up and Capaldi was my favourite new Who Doctor. His performance was electric, powerful and at times dangerous, just like Tom.
Thank you for the video, Vera! And happy Doctor Who anniversary for everybody! Despite not being my favorite incarnation, I really love how the Twelfth Doctor (portrayed by Peter Capaldi) has an entire character arc during his tenure. In this run, the Doctor finally confronts his own darkness and tries to understand who he is (at least, the current incarnation). As Vera explained, the core aspect of wanting to help people, regardless the odds, out of kindness, it is really important to the character. And considering how regeneration still represents the death of the current incarnation and they become a new person (despite being tecnically the same body and keeping the memories), the grief and refusal over it is very justifiable. Similar interpretation could also be applied to the then Master's incarnation, Missy (portrayed by Michelle Gomez). She finally decided to stand beside her best friend at the end, but she could not do it so. And the Doctor was not (and probably never will be) aware about that, what is really sad.
As far as I'm concerned, Steven Moffat was far and away the best thing to happen to Doctor Who, he had the best Doctors, the best companions (I include Missy in that) and the best stories.
His era gets a lot of stick, which I don't quite understand. Some of his episodes don't work, but you can tell the effort is there. Like, you can see what the intention was, even if he didn't stick the landing. But blimey, when his scripts shone, it was blinding. He gave us some of the best Who there's ever been.
Capaldi was my doctor when I first watched the series as a teenager, but never finished as I never got to continue watching. I just finished his run today, minutes before you dropped this video. I cried buckets (as I do for each regeneration), but it felt a tiny bit more sorrowful this time. I love the other doctors, and Capaldi was my doctor, and it hurt to see him leave finding himself finally. I am excited for what comes next, though. Thank you for a lovely video, as always.
Best Doctor, and imo all 3 of his final 3 episodes are the best final adventures any Doctor has ever gotten. I think this one gets a bit overshadowed in the discussion by World Enough and Time--similar to Heaven Sent vs Hell Bent but with far less divisiveness--but it is every bit as good and it's raised the bar to a level I'll be surprised to see surpassed.
It really does. I just feel bad for people who didn’t watch Capaldi because not everything about that era was perfect but looking back on it I feel like it aged pretty well and his performance and love for the material shines through even when there are issues with the stories
"I know where I got this face and I know what it's for. To remind me. To hold me to the mark. I'm the Doctor, and I save people." On a related note to this face, Donna Noble is the best, the best, the best, and I will not be taking questions at this time.
I agree 100 %! Absolutely. It is really validating to hear someone deliver my exact thoughts and feelings on this story and also this incarnation of The Doctor. Capaldi is my Doctor too.
This story is hands down my favourite. 12 is easily my favourite doctor and their philosophy has impacted me deeply, my first tattoo was the quote of 'Without hope, without witness, without reward'
This was my first ever live Doctor Who episode as a fan (as in I had watched a few stories, but this was when I sat down when it was live to watch it, having been influenced by a Whovian friend). It made me fall in love with an incarnation that I had been told to hate, and it remains my favourite 12th doctor story!
Vera I really enjoy when you talk about 12. One of your videos on him changed my perception of him a good deal, and he was already my favorite. Keep being awesome! 12 has such good stories.
Great Video! I love the season 10 finale. Twelve's speech to the master(s) is one of my favourite scenes in the show and definitely my favourite speech overall. It's perfect for all the reasons that you mentioned.
Heaven Sent might be the best Capaldi episode, but he is indeed the best Doctor in The Doctor Falls. Great video and I now need to learn that beautiful "kind"-speech by heart!
Excellent video. I love Capaldi, he is my Doctor, who I love his development throughout his time from Series 8-10. Your video really shows who is especially his line because it’s kind is so powerful. West a finale it was! Who I am is where I stand, where I stand is where I fall!
Currently doing a rewatch of Who with my girlfriend and I can't wait to get to Capaldi again (we're still on Tenant Mk1) as he just nailed it. Watching this furthered my excitement to get there, then made me sad as its his almost swansong. Like some other have said, the fact that 2 of his stories top a poll of the best says it all. Happy Who Day all.... here's to another 60!
I truly love the triad of final chapters of the Capaldi run. The thrilling, the tragic, the tension, the halo of absolution that the 12th Doctor has after aaaall his character arc during the season. The final speech giving us the absolute simpliest keys to individually make a collective better world. Inspirational.
gotta love Capaldi appreciation. he's my fave doctor as well, and while his era definitely had its shortcomings, it also had some of the best Doctor Who ever.
I know the 12th Doctor is a bit inconsistent in terms of writing & even writing quality, but Peter Capaldi is probably my favorite actor to ever play the Doctor in NuWho. Dude has freaking range
I actually liked Twelve in Series 8 because it was so different. I usually prefer more warmth and emotion in shows but found Series 8 refreshingly different.
This. This is why Capaldi is so good as the Doctor, and why I will defend his Doctor to any nay-sayers. Everything you've said here, Vera, is what makes me love him, and love this episode.
Confession time: I think The Doctor Falls is the better story over World and Time Enough. Not that I don't appreciate the latter's tragic ending or Michelle Gomez just killing it in every scene; but the former is just so... emotive. The Doctor's resolve to save Bill and the entirety of Floor 507,, their sacrifice towards the end of the episode, taking down all the Cybermen with them (I refer to every Doctor with they/them pronouns btw), their pain and sadness as they're clinging onto hope in the face of their own death. It's Capaldi's best performance on the series, and seals why not only why I think his era is so underrated, but why he's my favourite Doctor alongside Tennant.
The twelfth doctor has one of my least favorite companions for 2/3 of his time, and yet he’s my favorite doctor (pushing out the fifth). This episode, indeed, embodies why.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Capaldi is the best actor to play the Doctor. That doesn’t make him my favourite, necessarily, but purely based on his talent, Capaldi is the best actor to play the role (outside of like, John Hurt, but he doesn’t really count in my opinion.)
Ok I went to the playlist and showed some love for the others at last. One thing though, there are only 9 vids, it says "2 unavailable videos are hidden" making me think somebody got a copyright ding or something. Maybe you should tell them? I have no idea who they were. My list shows Daniel Rawlings for 16 seconds, Vacuum of Comments for 16 min, Tom Mason for 8 min, Television and Other Rantings for 4 min, The Whoniversals for 8 min, Smalledd for 12 min, Shobogan Who for 11 min, Nicholas Payne for 11 min, and then you for 18. Just FYI.
Capaldi is my second favorite doctor with Matt as my favorite doctor but I feel he didn’t get a fair shake with season 8 cause to be it feels like a season intended for Matt but he didn’t stay for it so they just gave it to capaldi as it was and told him to act more like Matt’s doctor that’s why he bounces around like Matt in the season with season nine and ten he got to be his own doctor Vern though I feel 9 shouldn’t have been a season of 2 parters 10 was peak capaldi with seasons nine and ten the got how to write for him and did it so well like the zygon speech the kind speech from the doctor falls for example the doctor has always liked helping other cause it even got him exiled to earth when his people the timelords put him through the war games then forced him to regenerate then serve his exile and even then he still helped where he could even though he couldn’t leave earth the the timelords have a rule that they are not supposed to interfere with other planets and civilization and he has broken the rule countless times over by this point

I hope they dream of having that big blue box appearing on their street. I hope that they have THEIR Doctor who means so much to them and that they connect with them. I hope they get to experience the wonder and the magic and the whimsy of this show.
I hope "niblings" isn't a misprint for "siblings", because it _should_ be a word. Let's hear it for the niblings of this world!
Peter Capaldi is my favorite Doctor. But I am really really looking forward to seeing Ncuti Gatwa's doctor. I can't wait, I'm ecstatic!
My favourite episode for the exact reasons as you stated and my FAVOURITE Doctor!
Capaldi is THE Doctor to me: He grounds the character like no one else.
I have been watching Dr. Who since 1976 and THIS episode is carved into my heart. It is WHO the Doctor is to me.
I’m doing a rewatch of season 10 (my favourite season) and this video perfectly encapsulates everything I’ve thought about it over the last few weeks, the platonic ideal is a great description
Capaldi delivers - & this is another shining example of Steven Moffat's brilliance with dialogue.
World enough and time/the doctor falls is absolutely my favourite two parter of all time, it's so brilliant and I love it. People who left after Matt Smith missed out.
David Tennant as the 10th Doctor was my favourite Doctor until Peter Capaldi absolutely smashed it as 12.
He is my #1 favourite Doctor now 😊
(David's 10th Doctor is now second favourite)
even before finding your channel i completely and wholely thought as well that this episode portrays the doctor as his best, just a kind person, willing to put themselves in the line of fire in the hopes that even just a few will survive.
Certainly my favourite Nu Who showrunner. And Capaldi and Smith the best Nu Who Doctors.
Good thing I rewatched this episode yesterday lol
Vera talking about 12 is always like an early Christmas ❤
I cried. Thank you for this beautiful tribute to my favourite incarnation 💜💜➕🟦
Kindness is kindness in extremis
This also shows that the Doctor is a perfect Jedi
12 is the ultimate embodiment of The Doctor. ❤❤
Season 10 is my favourite season of the show and this finale and the special that follows it are masterpieces.
I talk to people about this all the time and his speech is literally my approach to life.
Literally just rewatched this episode last night with my dad.
Your insights are illuminating, as always 💖
I'm loving these extended retro intros you're doing!
Happy Who Day all.... here's to another 60!
just rewatched this arc last night and i was *crying*
Loving the full on embrace of Dr Who
I truly love the triad of final chapters of the Capaldi run. The thrilling, the tragic, the tension, the halo of absolution that the 12th Doctor has after aaaall his character arc during the season. The final speech giving us the absolute simpliest keys to individually make a collective better world. Inspirational.
Really happy you made a video for this, absolutely loved it as usual!
Bravo! Excellent thoughts about an excellent episode of television. Everyone should see your video.
The speech in this is absolute perfection and Capaldi is uncontested with his delivery of speeches
gotta love Capaldi appreciation. he's my fave doctor as well, and while his era definitely had its shortcomings, it also had some of the best Doctor Who ever.
You are so good in putting in words and analyze this character in a way that I really agree with. Deep. Thank you for this video❤
I just discovered your channel, and I'm blown away. Amazing analysis, you really nailed who The Doctor is. Looking forward for more content!
Without Hope
Without Witness
Without Reward
I know the 12th Doctor is a bit inconsistent in terms of writing & even writing quality, but Peter Capaldi is probably my favorite actor to ever play the Doctor in NuWho. Dude has freaking range
This was wonderful, thank you!
Love this so much Vera, thank you! ❤️
Brilliantly executed video! ❤❤
thanks for putting me on to this great playlist
beautiful video! had me in tears. happy 60th!
Masterpiece of a story, honestly can’t believe that it did little for me on a first watch years back.
Totally agree with you vera and love the video as always thank you for making it
Matt Smith is my doctor since that's who I began the show with but Capaldi is the best one imo.
This is lovely. Thank you.
Above all else, be kind. ❤
Just FYI.
Well done and well said.
I agree that capaldi is the ideal Doctor xD!
Also the way he is written in the doctor falls was great hahahaha
You mean the 12th Doctors last episode right? Such a fitting ending glad He went out on this.
Twice upon a time is his last episode
@@fnafassist I know I’m joking 🙃😑
U don’t like twice upon a time?
@@fnafassist God no think it’s awful. Wish it ended with The Doctor Falls. The 1st Doctor was such a character assassination and it just meandered.
Have you seen the five doctors ?
I have but it was a long time ago. I need to rewatch it and give it a proper review.
Capaldi is my second favorite doctor with Matt as my favorite doctor but I feel he didn’t get a fair shake with season 8 cause to be it feels like a season intended for Matt but he didn’t stay for it so they just gave it to capaldi as it was and told him to act more like Matt’s doctor that’s why he bounces around like Matt in the season with season nine and ten he got to be his own doctor Vern though I feel 9 shouldn’t have been a season of 2 parters 10 was peak capaldi with seasons nine and ten the got how to write for him and did it so well like the zygon speech the kind speech from the doctor falls for example the doctor has always liked helping other cause it even got him exiled to earth when his people the timelords put him through the war games then forced him to regenerate then serve his exile and even then he still helped where he could even though he couldn’t leave earth the the timelords have a rule that they are not supposed to interfere with other planets and civilization and he has broken the rule countless times over by this point
i Honestly believe they missed THE best way to end the doctor and kill him, it was genuinely perfect
I really love Twice Upon a Time but The Doctor Falls reeeeeally should have been Capaldi’s last episode.
I’ve softened on Twice Upon a Time. It’s definitely got its problems but I accept it as a coda to The Doctor Falls’ climax.
@@CouncilofGeeksyep, exactly. It's a coda. Not just to Twelve, but to Moffat, too.
I'm happy to let Moffat have one final story that's just cosy, and a bit of a bow to the audience.
#TheUniverseLovesPeterCapaldi ❤😊
Ideal for the ideal god!
All i can say is the Doctor is better than me.
Love ❤
It will forever be a deep shame for me that the first two Capaldi seasons are NOWHERE near the consistent quality of Season 10
