Interesting how you didn't do a review on The Matrix Resurrections. What would you grade the film?
C+ or B- I honestly don't really know and I feel like I need to give it a second watch to even sort through my thoughts and feelings. Legitimately I had no idea what I felt about the movie for 3 days after I watched it.
There's 3 reasons I didn't post a review of the film (1) My wife was out of town last week. So I was in single dad mode during a busy week where I went to the movies 4 times! The embargo didn't lift until a week after I saw the film. And I just couldn't get a review shot early enough. (2) I honestly didn't know what I thought about the film for that week. (3) I saw NO Way Home a day after i saw Matrix 4 and it was just a juggernaut that ate all my time for a week.
It's actually incredibly frustrating to me that WB dropped this movie at a time where it would get lost amongst all the noise. If this was dropped in a normal window, I would have reviewed all the Matrix films and done a non-spoiler and spoiler review of the new film.
But it dropped in this extremely clustered window where there's a ton of new movies and tv shows dropping (No Way Home, Witcher S2, Sing 2, The King's Man, Boba Felt, Cobra Kai S4, Dexter, Matrix 4)....and most importantly the biggest movies in 2 and half years dropped. No Way Home is just sucking all of the oxygen out of the room.
NO Way Home is by far the most popular film in a very long time and I made the choice to cover it from every which way and ride it's wave of momentum. That made for a week of videos with great numbers. But it also meant I wasn't able to cover a lot of others things with as much deal as I wanted.
@@SeanChandlerTalksAbout Do you plan on seeing Guillermo Del Toro’s new film Nightmare Alley? Me and a friend saw it last week and loved it.
@@SeanChandlerTalksAbout Ok! Thank you very very much for clearing that up for us. Also, Merry Christmas!
@@gex2468 I do not. Another victim of a busy month. I was invited to two different press screenings. I was going to go. But I've just been swamped for about 3 months straight. So I just had to start saying no to some things. On the positive side, it's been great 3 months for the channel ( maybe the best 3 consecutive months I've ever had), but it's also been frustrating at all the things I wanted to cover but wasn't able to.
It's a good problem to have! But it's still frustrating. I hate to disappoint people. And I'd prefer to be more well rounded.
@@SeanChandlerTalksAbout That’s unfortunate. If you ever get the opportunity to see it sometime in the future I would highly recommend it.
I intentionally made this ranking longer than most of my rankings with only 4 movies because I wanted to talk about the movie more. I intended to do full reviews of the original trilogy. Wrote enough notes to do so, but then the month turned out to be too busy. SO I tried to share extra thought here.
You can do full reviews of them at some point but it's understandable.
Perfect ranking, same as mine!
Lets goooo the ranking I’ve been waiting for the first matrix is easily one of my top 3 favorite movies of all time
Matrix reloaded is incredibly underrated, it’s fight sequences easily match the first matrix
Well, the Neo vs. Smith is lame, but the Neo vs. Seraph, the Morpheus vs. Agent and the Chateau fights are awesome.
@@akosleoszilagyi2529 I see why people don’t like it and fair enough that makes sense but I still enjoy that fight
@@jamesstokes7435 yeah same
I love the ending of Matrix Revolutions and how the sequels deconstructed the chosen one. For me and yes other fans as well it was satisfying.
I loved The Matrix 1 and Reloaded. I like Revolutions. I thought Matrix 4 was good but it was confusing at times and felt a little similar to the first movie.
I honestly feel it would have been better if they made the whole Matrix actually be all in Anderson head. they still could have thrown action sequences in there with the distortion of reality and Anderson version of reality. This was where they started with the first part of Matrix 4 and why it was so underwhelming by the end of it. Then it could have been very philosophical around the concept of reality and what we observe in our mind with how can we know is real or not that was introduced in the Matrix
Reloaded is far more confusing ,with the key master, train conductor , and The Frenchman, , it had me completely lost.
I didn’t mind that Revolutions ended in a peace rather than just the humans winning, and Id argue that’s a better solution to the conflict (especially if you’ve seen animatrix), but I see where you’re coming from.
Also IMO the matrix sequels are underrated.
I will say Mr. Smith being in every movie actually helps them, it was really just the writing around Smith's character that screwed it up. There was a very obvious way to take they franchise that would have made it a very solid movie and that is the question of whether the Matrix is real or not, with the whole trilogy set around "Neo" and a huge nemesis toward Neo with Smith. Our whole understand of the Matrix is from Tom Anderson's perspective so turning this upside down with there actually be no Matrix but just an elaborate fantasy created by a guy that is extremely bored with his life would have really worked while not undermining the original trilogy. It would even explain why Neo was the only person that was super OP because who doesn't want to be the most powerful person in their fantasy World?
Okay so to kind of explain the end of Resurrections. The sixth iteration of The Matrix (which was present in the original trilogy) had Neo as the one, and the journey of the One should have ended with Neo returning to the Source. But in Reloaded, he didn’t do that because he wanted to save Trinity. So when NPH’s character made the seventh iteration, he added in the One code to both Neo and Trinity. He did this so that the One, when split up, would be useless. So when Neo and Trinity unite, they have special powers. But yeah, basically the movie didn’t really explain it well. I mean the characters spoke too fancy and too fast. So I get the criticism, but this is just here for explanation in case anyone didn’t get it.
But that doesnt make it better, because its not believeable and takes away too much of the original story
Thx for doing this video I was waiting for this to come out
Just came back from the 4th one:
4 = Matrix Revolutions (5/10) - Had some excellent action and visuals and concludes Neo’s story well and I love the design of the machine world but it got rid of all the philosophical conversations and character development I loved from the first two movies and replaced it with just CGI battles in the second half. As cool as the battle of zion was, it felt like something i’d see in terminator. Neo vs Smith was awesome though but ending was rushed.
3 = Matrix Resurrections (6/10) - Unnecessary but a decent follow up. Cool seeing how Neo and everyone including Ioh was doing 20 years after the events of the trilogy. Continues the themes of what’s real and what’s not, Neil Patrick Harris was really entertaining as a villain, had some cool cinematography and directing. Surprisingly the action, while still good, was not very memorable, I hate that it got rid of the green tint in the matrix, most of the new characters were forgettable and I didn’t like the recasting for Smith and Morpheus. Still, it could’ve been worse.
2 = Matrix Reloaded (7/10) - Some of the best action scenes of all time, Neo and Trinity are more developed, seeing Zion was so awesome, the Architect scene was an excellent subversion of the chosen one narrative and contains excellent philosohical conversations. Neo is way too overpowered in this movie, the story is convoluted and contains filler and the action and conversations can go on too long.
1 = Matrix (9/10) - Don’t think I need to explain why. What prevents it from being a 10 though is some slow pacing in the second act and characters such as Apoc and Switch being forgettable and unnecessary. Not every character needs to be develooed but give them some personality at least. Everything else from the action to the casting to the world to the script to the story is near perfect
@Brad1980 it’s resurrections
I 100% agree with you. Can’t wait until your next video!😁
My ranking
1)the Matrix
Cz that's the only one I've seen
Well hey there, Sean. Merry Christmas
Chris Stuckmann just called; he wants his set back...
The points you made about Matrix Resurrections were exactly what I thought about it.
04. Resurrections
03. Revolutions
02. Reloaded
01. Matrix
Great vid!
Merry Christmas Sean.
Great video.
From worst to best: resurrections, revolutions, reloaded and the awsome Matrix 1999
Merry Matrixmas
Thanks Sean this was just what I needed to watch to restore my love for the original movie. You perfectly described what made the movie so deep and memorable which is the perfect antidote after seeing the new movie which by contrast felt pointless and disappointing.
Thanks again for cheering me up
Haven't watched any of The Matrix movies, still want to hear what Sean has to say about them 😅
Appreciate the watch.....BUT SPOILERS!!!
Dude, literally the first couple seconds of this video is a spoiler warning. Don't be stupid, you're gonna ruin yourself one of the best movie-viewing experiences EVER. Don't watch this video. Sean would want it this way, trust me.
Watch it bro, just watch it
Ha, don't worry guys, I have already been spoiled about all the major stuff. I don't care very much about the plot of the movies if I ever watch them, I'm much more interested in the details.
@@brucesimmons5517 How? Do you live under a rock?
The original is the best one! Definitely!
My ranking is in the order of release, the first being the best of course!
My favorite is Reloaded with the 1st movie being a extremely close 2nd
You articulate some good points on the franchise as a whole...🤔
I watched Resurrections recently with my Father and I don't think it resonated with him as much as it did with me.
I really enjoyed the humans and machines living together harmoniously. But I think my Father is still waiting for Neo to fulfil his destiny and take down the machines and free humanity. Which I think highlights a point that you made that the goal posts were moved at the end of Reloaded. And made the trilogy disappointing if you loved the first film.
Love your work! Have a good 2022! 🎉🎉
Sean in the Future Please Rank Kurt Wimmer’s Films especially Equilibrium he’s one my Favorite Writer/Directors he’s very Underrated
I wonder how different things would've been if Reloaded and Revolutions were one movie instead of two?
Great list. Because it's my list :)
My ranking:
4. Resurrections - 8/10
3. The Matrix or Reloaded - 10/10
2. The Matrix or Reloaded - 10/10
1. Revolutions - probably my 2nd favorite movie ever
My ranking would be
5.- Revolutions
4.- Reloaded
3.- Animatrix (yeah, i know it’s weird to include it since it’s a compilation of short films, but why not? It’s good!)
2.- Resurrections
1.- Matrix
Reloaded>>>Resurrections
Actually I totally forgot about Animatrix but yeah it was amazing.
I noticed the animatrix was weirdly not mentioned. Although in a different format it is considered Canon and as much as I generally don't like cartoons or anima which the movie is I guess. It received very good reviews and I found it enjoyable. Although it functions as ?re of a sidequel/prequel and is in the same universe. The Washawskis had so e creative control! and the stories actually explain explain add to the mythology of the series. It details the original war between man and the machines as well as the machines takeover and creation of the matrix.
The animatrix was dope!! I just saw all 9 today for the first time. 20 year matrix fan. They should’ve done a dope spinoff movie off one of the animatrix episodes before resurrections to see what they did wrong/right before continuing that insane trilogy.
1. The Matix
2. Resurrection
3. Revolution
4. Reloaded.
5. Animatrix (6.5/10)
4. Resurrections (9/10)
3. Revolutions (9/10)
2. (Tie) Reloaded (10/10)
1. (Tie) The Matrix (10/10)
The first two matrix films are tie, because they’re my two favorite matrix films.
Hey Sean!
I’ve only seen the first 2 films and am gonna see the newest one tmrw I hope it’s not as bad as I hear😅
Hi Sean. I like your viewing on most of stuff. I just wanted to say that I always looked at the Matrix trilogy as 1 whole movie. And sure... "The Matrix" was much better than "Reloaded" and "Rev" but... It wouldn't be concluded whitout 2 sequels. That's why I never understood when people think there should be only 1st and no sequels. That's just my viewing of this franchise. Cheers. 😉
1. The Matrix
2. Reloaded
3. Resurrections
4. Revolutions
I can understand the letdown of revolutions. Reloaded I keep changing my mind on it. Resurrections I mean I didn't expect more or less but still not convinced by story. In a technical note which may not be surprising I am going to have to go with the first film in terms of the narrative.
I loved this movie! It was such a great watch and the new cast was great! My ranking:
1. The Matrix
2. The Matrix Resurrections
3. The Matrix Reloaded
4. The Matrix Revolutions
I can agree with this
Only Jessica Henwick was good. The rest sucked.
Same.
Nailed it
Reloaded Was the only decent sequel Revolutions was ok and Resurrections didn’t feel like much of a Matrix movie.
1. The Matrix
2. The Animatrix
3. The Matrix Ressurections
4. The Matrix Reloaded
5. The Matrix Revolutions
I watched the first matrix for the first time a couple days ago and I really didn’t understand it I might need to watch it again but there were some parts I liked a lot and then others I just couldn’t wrap my head around I might need a second viewing to see
Completely agree with everything.
I agree with your list.
My ranking
4.Matrix Revolutions
3.Matrix realoded
2.Matrix:Ressurection
1.Matrix
i’d say
1. #1
2. #4
3. #2
4. #3
Matrix Resurrection did do this thing where it is 16 years from the original trilogy but is set actually 80 years from the trilogy so pretty much everyone aged but Neo and Trinity and Agent Smith took over a younger body
60*
4. The Matrix: Revolutions (4/10)
I agree it felt like 3 different movies in one, and as much I liked agent Smith as a villain, I kinda wished they took a different direction
3. The Matrix: Reloaded (6.5/10) i thought it started off slow but once they got to the action, I was sold. I'm still not a fan of the subplot involving Zion but they made it work
2. Matrix: Resurrections (7.5/10)
I was really high on it originally but the more I thought about it, the more faults I saw. I do like the use of meta in this movie and specifically how Neo is a video game designer, alluding to being deceived by what is reality. Furthermore, I like how they incorporated some humor and brought back old characters (even if it wasn't neccesary)
1. The Matrix (8.5/10)
The action and visual effects are amazing in this film! Along with Hugo Weaving's performance and what I really like is the subtlety of the world and how we perceive the world differently. Although I kinda feel like Neo is a little too op and feels more like a video game character than a human and as a result, I found a hard time sympathizing with his case but overall it's a modern classic
Im wondering...could u do another one of the matrix ranking but with the Animatrix movies??? Or are the Animatrix movies even worth A watch???
Obviously *The Matrix* is first, but where is *Resurection* though? 😮
4.Matrix Revolutions
3.Matrix Resurrections
2.Matrix Reloaded
1.The Matrix (1999)
1. The Matrix:
Arguably the best movie ever made. Not for Oscars or anything I’m just saying if you had to show somebody a movie and they had to like it or the world would end I think this movie would be a solid choice. Such a great film with an incredible world, characters, climax. He is the one might be my favorite movie moment ever.
2. The Matrix Reloaded:
I think I like this movie more than most people. Neo catching Trinity and reviving her just works for me and is one of my favorite moments of the trilogy. I enjoy pretty much every action scene here (Morpheus with the katana is awesome!) and I kind of like the architect scene for how it changes the direction of the story.
3. The Matrix Revolutions:
One of the best final showdowns ever! This is another movie that I think I like more than most. The mech battle is interesting to me. Is it as cool as Matrix action? No, but it does add its own unique flavor to the movie. The race to set off the EMP is thrilling and I appreciate Neo and Trinity’s sacrifice. The reason this movie falls here is because so much of it separates Neo, Morpheus and Trinity, which is something I don’t appreciate in movie series like this.
4. The Matrix Resurrections:
If Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving were in this movie, it might be my second favorite Matrix movie. Maybe. The first 30 minutes are a little weird and it feels different from the original trilogy. The flickering back to footage of that trilogy is also a weird touch. But I really like the emphasis on Neo and Trinity’s love as I’m a sucker for that kind of stuff. The whole climax is awesome though it would have been better without the recasting. Yahya did a good job but Morpheus is one of my favorite characters ever and I’m just too attached to Laurence Fishburne. The character could have definitely been CGI’d if the MCU has proven anything. There’s no reason Neo would remember everything else perfectly except for how Morpheus looked. The same can be said for Agent Smith. He’s one of the greatest movie villains ever, and I know you don’t want to do an impersonation but the Smith here doesn’t act like Agent Smith. Him calling Neo Tom felt weird every time. He would have been a good new character but making him Smith pulls me out of the movie. I really liked NPH’s role in the movie as well as Jessica Henwick. I liked seeing that Neo and Trinity’s sacrifices had an impact. I liked Priyanka Chopra as Sati.
I love the og trilogy. I thinkit's what the star wars prequels are to a lot of people on here. Liked them when they came out, like them even more now. Ressurections is shit
4. Matrix ressurections
3. Matrix revolutions
2. Matrix reloaded
1. The matrix
Perfect ranking.
4, 3, 2, 1
There is a HUGE leap in quality between Reloaded and the first one. The sequel is about half a good movie that I can have fun with, but the only redeeming quality of Revolutions is the Zion sequence, and the emphasis on love, thematically…and it had a dour ending. The setup of Resurrections is promising, it went too meta to the point of self-parody, was missing such iconic actors as Lawrence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving. It also didn’t feel like a Matrix movie in the action department; was lacking that style that even Revolutions had. It goes without saying that the original Matrix is the best!
I think they intentionally destroyed their own mythology as a fuck you to Warner Bros and the fans. The prosthetic middle finger made it pretty clear haha.
My rating is the exact same, except I kinda view 3 and 2 as one long story more than separate peices of media
I have the same exact list as you.
1. Matrix
2. Reloaded
3. Revolutions
4. Resurrections
resurrections aint bad, i find no matrix bad, just the first one is better than the rest, resurrections is okay, just sad to see so many actors changed
1. The Matrix
2. The Matrix Resurrections
3. The Matrix Reloaded
4. The Matrix Revolutions
Can you rank the sharknado syfy franchise?
Mine would be
Matrix
Resurrections
Reloaded
Revolutions
I love the matrix films no matter what directions surprisingly resurrections not Amazing wasn’t anywhere near bad like people said reloaded and revolutions
Pretty much the same ranking as you, for a lot of the same reasons (though I think I had different issues with some of them).
5. The Matrix Revolutions
4. The Matrix Resurrections
3. The Matrix Reloaded
2. The Animatrix
1. The Matrix
The first Matrix is inspiring and makes me think about life and my own purpose. The sequels just give me a damn headache lol
#1. The Matrix
#2. Revolutions
#2. Resurrection
#2. Reloaded
That’s all that’s needed for me.
no review for resurrections?

2. Animatrix
3. Reloaded/Revolution
4. Resurrection
1. The Matrix (1999)
2. Matrix Ressurections
3. Matrix Reloaded
4. Matrix Revolutions
I’d rank all four films the exact same way. I will say I wholeheartedly think in 10-15 years Resurrections will get a cult following or at least gain more appreciation. Great video Sean
The sequels aren’t even in same ballpark as the original. In any way.
@@jimsmith8797 Should have been a one and done.
A cult following? For being one of the most unoriginal movies ever made?
Resurrections is the only one I dislike. I actually really like 2 and 3
Matrix 1- We tried and we did great
Matrix 2- We tried and we failed
Matrix 3- We didn't even try
Matrix 4- We didn’t want to do this
The Matrix Reloaded is one of my favorite movies EVER, The best in the franchise in my opinion!
Part 1 was AMAZING, it ended with Neo becoming The One, kickin ass and Flying off 🤯🤯🤯
I wanted more of THAT and thats what Part 2 gave me and i loved every second of it!!!
The New Matrix is disappointing 😞
The matrix reloaded is my least favorite of the trilogy. I loved the first one and thought reloaded would be just as good as the first one but I was extremely dissapointed. I thought it was boring, it drags on for longer than it needs to, and the first like half hour isn't even spent in the matrix it's set in zion, and zion is SO BORING!
The new one felt like a lifeless cog in the commercial machine. Yes, you have to make money but if you do, make one that everyone looks like they care about being in! Even Keanu seemed bored at times.
1. The matrix
2. The matrix resurrections
3. The matrix revolutions
4. The matrix reloaded
It's kind of sad that the only one of the four movies we all universally love is the first one.

4. Revolutions
3. Resurrections
2. Reloaded
1. The matrix
My ranking would be
4 matrix resurection

My ranking:
The Matrix (10/10)
The Matrix Reloaded (8/10)
The Matrix Revolutions (7/10)
The Matrix Resurrections (5/10)
#4 - Matrix Reloaded
#3 - Matrix Revolutions
#2 - Matrix Resurrections
#1 - The Matrix
My Ranking was exactly the same before watching this Video. I wasn't impressed by Resurrections, although I did think it was an upgrade compared to Revolutions.
Am I the only one who loves "Revolutions"? In fact, ALL of them?
haven't seen Resurrections and The Animatrix yet
1. The Matrix
2. The Matrix Reloaded
3. The Matrix Revolutions
from what i've heard i'd probably like Resurrections more than Revolutions though, Reloaded i can't tell
I knew matrix 3 was at the bottom and matrix 1 was at top, the only reason I watched this video was because I wanted to see which one will be ranked higher, matrix 2 or matrix 4
I haven't seen ressurections yet, but I'm a huge fan of the matrix movies. I loved the first two, but the third one was honestly terrible and the loose plot just led up to a big fight with cgi effects. I had fun with it, but I do hope ressurections is a better film.
I can tell you now that I saw it, yes it is a better movie than Revolutions, *probably* at equal footing with the second movie, but definitely not as good as the first. Still a good and enjoyable movie.
@@victorcapote7376 Yeah I just saw it, totally agree

People, come on!!! The two words 'disappointment' and 'Matrix' should never be said in the same sentence. Period. Point blank, dot.
I rank em :
The matrix
Revolutions
Reloaded
Resurrections
Not understanding all the hate with revolutions either. Reloaded was fire with action and a good bridge into revolutions but it felt rushed and some scenes especially with the twins just felt out of place. Revolutions was a masterpiece imo, started off right after reloaded and felt more like the first movie at times, had a good split of scenes between the matrix and the real world. And understanding to make a truce to defeat the virus (smith). My only complaint with it was the ending on how easy he beat smith, would’ve liked a more convincing fatality finish. But still not understanding why all the hate lol. 23 year matrix fan here 🤙🏽
@Kai Crowe I’m right there with ya man. It was solid rewatched all three recently too so no excuses lol
Hot take: I didn’t like Matrix 1 all that much, so I haven’t seen the others
Imagine if The Matrix released in 2021-2022 and not 1999... Goated. Given where technology is today, I would have just preferred a remake or remastered version of the first two films. Just for the fans. Obviously may have to do some recasting but everything else should be completely identical.
So far
1. The Matrix
2. Reloaded
3. Revolutions
Both 2 and 3 are tied and I haven’t seen Resurrections yet
Why do i have a filling that you just go on imdb and rank these not on your opinion but on the imdb score
1: The Matrix
2: Reloaded
3: Revolutions
4: Resurrections
Other than the action, I thought the new Matrix was really stellar.
I would have preferred stellar action and a very lackluster story. Matrix needs groundbreaking action scenes
@@nms7872 Those are my exact thoughts on Reloaded and Revolutions, which I like about as much as Resurrections. Each has what the other lacks in a way.
