He also wrote "Help Me Make It Through The Night" which was originally recorded by Country singer Sammi Smith, however, Gladys Knight's cover will blow your socks off. It sounds nothing like a country ballad when Gladys sings it with a little soul.
*sigh* They said he was "country". That does not equate to "intellectually subpar". That stereotype is so overused and worn out. Please take a seat, do some research and educate yourself.
JANIS JOPLIN WITHOUT DEPTH?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! That's the goofiest thing I ever heard! You aren't listening to the right song! The Queen of Rock N Roll!!! You can't stop with Me & Bobby McGee! For such a short but powerful career, Janis had so many songs like Cry Baby, Summertime, Ball N Chain, Try Just A Little Bit Harder, Get It While You Can SO MANY! Janis Joplin without depth .... my goodness
Great reaction, albeit from a perspective of not understanding the context. No offense implied. It's the same idea you spoke about in the Saxon reaction - basically, if you'd been able to experience it when it happened you'd appreciate it more. Kris Kristofferson is one of the greatest songwriters. Janis did this cover at a time when Bob Dylan had just made people realize that music didn't require perfect musicians or singers. Kris K didn't write it for Janis. A bunch of artists had already recorded the song by the time Janis did it, including Kris himself. When he heard Janis' recording, Kris said it was his favorite and that this was what he had imagined the song to sound like. Janis was in the wave of artists benefiting from Dylan making music more about meaning and feeling. So at the time, this recording was almost revolutionary. Janis was never about her vocal ability, but about her energy, rawness, and emotion. This recording was the voice of a generation for reasons that transcend musical ability. It was the combination of songwriting and sheer emotion that spoke for a whole lot of people who wanted to be heard, even if for no other reason than to simply be heard.
Very well said AreaMan920. Hit it right on the nail. There was a interview with Ken Kesey at the end of a documentary about the dedicate fans of the Grateful Dead. And, she really stripped it down to what music is supposed to do, touch your soul. She became "possessed" when she performed. She wasn't into stage theatrics. Sadly, if she came along today, she'd never make it because she didn't "look" the part. She's not a Christina Aguilera, Qwen Stefani, etc. She could hang with the guys and partied (too much, sadly) the movie "The Rose" is supposedly based loosely on Joplin's life. Whether it is or isn't, watch it. Bette Midler is phenomenal in that role. Thanks guys. Much love and PEACE OUT ✌. I'm 53, so just a wannabe hippy!

Wait a minute. The voice of Janis Joplin doesn't have *depth* on this song?! I'm sorry, I love this channel so much, but I have to seriously disagree with y'all on that one point! Some of the greatest, most soulful singers' voices "crack" during performances that are absolutely incredible! That is actually part of the *soul* in those performances-- the singers are so into it, feeling what they are singing so deeply, that their voices can crack, and they don't care about it, and not only does it not negatively affect the performances, it actually *enhances* them. One of the best examples of this is Merry Clayton's searing vocal attack in the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter."
Ryan agreed it sounds good.. Fact of the matter that he is pointing out as a new listener is that; compared to other soul singers he has been subjected to, she cracks when reaching for high notes. Just what it is. These guys just call it like they see it I think ;)
Yep, "Ball And Chain" AND ALSO "Summer Time" ---- TWO POWERFUL SONGS Sung by the TALENTED Janis Joplin (it's TOO damn bad that she let the damn DRUGS TAKE OVER HER, SMH).
I've noticed that when this song comes on at a bar or a cover band want's to show the chops of their female singer, the female patrons go nuts -- they all sing along and really get into it so Kris hit on something.
Soul/Blues.....Janis had more soul in her pinky finger than most have in their whole body!!! She is a legend and their hasn’t been another voice like hers since!!! PLEASE react to her song “Cry Baby”
David Hodge Great choices! Ann Wilson is probably my favorite female vocalist ever. I would choose "Straight On" for them to review. It's a rocker with a bit of funk mixed in it. I think they would dig it.

Many people consider Kris Kristofferson one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Incredible life he was a Rhodes scholor, Army helicopter pilot, completed ranger school. Was assigned to teach at west point but left army to peruse songwriting. His family disowned him. Did lots of odd jobs was working as a janitor at Columbia when he met June carter cash. He gave her a demo to give to Johnny cash but he put it to the side. After several attempts he rented a helicopter on Johnny Cash's front lawn to get his attention.
Its 60's era folk music. Not quite rock, not quite country, not quite jazz or R&B but a blend of any of them. Usually with fairly simple accompaniment.
"Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose"....one of the greatest lines in rock. Ever! If u never heard this song again...you're gonna remember that line
I agree- I’m not sure if y’all are hearing the whole song or just skipping over. Might be why y’all didn’t get the depth of her! She was a bad ass & a trend setter!

Joe Bonamassa & Beth Hart Official - "I'll Take Care of You" Live at the Beacon Theatre New York Joe Bonamassa & John Hiatt: "Down Around My Place" from Beacon Theatre - Live in New York
Classic. Country isnt my thing but this joint nice. She just has a way. So much soul and passion, especially at the end where she and the band go off. Passed too soon indeed. Not many people can convey emotion and depth like she does, even when her voice falters. It feels gooood nonetheless.
Janis Joplin's had such a soulful voice, very distinctive. she died to soon. piece of my heart was one of her very best. she has other songs. i've always loved to listen to distinctive voices in music, the ones that aren't like the other cookie cutter voices. from Soul Music which has it's deep roots in almost all gender of music, from Soul, to R & B, Motowns , Rock, Country Rock, especially Southern Rock and rooted solid to traditional Country Music. music has been therapy for my mind, heart and soul. wouldn't want or care to live without it.
I thought you guys MIGHT comment on this, but maybe I'm remembering it incorrectly, so I'm wrong about it. I'm 65 (yes), and I vividly remember Joplin. One of the things I remember (i think , but maybe I'm wrong) is that during her time, MANY said that if you just listened to her and didn't see her, you'd think she was a black woman singing. So, am curious to hear if anyone else remembers that AND it they agree. ?
arx754 Agree !!!!! I fell in love first time I heard her. This song got butchered up quite a bit here. If played in its entirety they'd have been spinning.
I'm a massive Tool and prog rock fan but Janis Joplin is my all time favorite female vocalist because I can hear her soul when she sings. Although, Etta James isn't too far behind her in my book.
She was bullied in high school. Drugs were her Achilles heal. She left Frisco and went home. Folks came to Texas to talk her in going back. She said she would if they promised to help her stay away from drugs. She knew she was vulnerable. They let her down. She was on Dick Cavett show a couple times. Great interviews
Agree with Victor Garcia below. Grace by Jeff Buckley or Lover, You Should've Come Over. ICONIC singer/songwriter with one of the better voices of all time.
This was during the Woodstock, Hendrix, The Doors, Bob Dylan era of music, oh.. and Vietnam. I'm not a big Joplin fan, but she was a hugely influential artist to a point it is hard to measure.
Gave a thumbs up without even listening. Great song. Classic rock... can't go wrong. Telling you though: The Moody Blues : Nights in White Satin (full version)
I get you! But you guys need to revisit The DOORS - ROADHOUSE BLUES OR L.A. WOMAN JIMI HENDRIX died 1st then JANIS JOPLIN & JIM MORRISON before passing he use to tell friends that they were drinking with number 3
George’s final comments about Joplin’s performances were right on the money. Piece of My Heart is one of those songs that is always in my playlist. I still remember the entire family sitting around our b/w TV screen watching her perform. Her performances were an event. Her death, along with Morrison and Hendrix, was shocking and heartbreaking. Who knew that America would be trapped in a drug epidemic now? 😢
Good old school folk song. Janis is awesome. Now for the list that will not die until you react/ review: 1. Metallica-Whiplash!( If you heard that do Motorbreath!) 2. Megadeth- Peace Sells but Whose Buying!( If you heard that do Killing is my business and business is good!) 3. Metal Church- Metal Church!( If you heard that do Start the Fire). 4. Celtic Frost-Procreation of the Wicked!( If ya heard that try Jewel Throne). 5. VoiVod-The Unknown Knows!( If you heard that try Ripping Headaches)! Let's do this boys
Oh Angels... Some of the best singers are not technically good singers. Watch her performance at Monterrey Pop Festival. It wasn't about technique. It was about FEELING. Janis wore her heart on her sleeve. Felt like you guys were a bit dismissive and your heart wasn't in it. And that's ashame. Ah well... we all have an off day. Still love you though.
That fusion of Country and Soul was really nice and the way the tempo transitioned into a bit faster one later into the song reminded me of Tina Turner Proud Mary and how that song started slow and then proceeded to build up and up and up. The writing was well done and for Janis to really project that feeling on the track was executed to the T. Helluva nice reaction to this country joint Lost In Vegas.
Would love to get some Pink Floyd reactions on here. Pink Floyd - Time Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here Pink Floyd - Astronomy Domine Any of those!
KYDD!! People are sleeping on this rapper. He is gonna be BIG TIME soon! Glad to say I followed him from the beginning. He’s got tons of videos that would have you guys losing it. It’s right up your alley I’d imagine! Thanks for the awesome reactions btw!!! Love this channel and have only been subscribed for about a month I guess.
She was pretty heavy into her drug use at the time too. Listen to Pink's cover. She's the only one that can truly do justice to Janis Joplin but she has the depth and range in her voice that y'all were talking about. As far as Kris Kristofferson goes, there's nothing he hasn't done. He tried to get noticed by Johnny Cash and couldn't so one day he landed on Johnny & June's property up beside their cabin and he gave Johnny a cassette tape of songs. He and Willie are the only 2 Highway Men left, I think. There's a great clip of him and Barbara Striesand from the movie "A Star is Born". There are a lot of clips, but this one is just her playing piano and he's singing her song.
I agree about Pink's version being great. Brandi Carlile also does a fantastic cover of it. Kris Kristofferson actually starred in one of Brandi's videos for her song "That Wasn't Me", sang "Turpentine" on her tribute album and stated that he really hasn't gotten into someone else's music like he has Brandi's since Janis and that he thinks Brandi may be an even better singer. She's also known for her voice cracking like it does on "The Story".
Margo Price's version she does at her live shows is the only one who even coming close to touching Janis' rendition IMO. I was blown away when she closed with it last summer.
@@troyhagen9843 Brandi can emote ! Turpentine and The Story always make me cry. She is good friends with fellow musicians The Avett Brothers (who are amazing and wonderful human beings as well as musicians and songwriters). She even commissioned Scott Avett to paint her portrait for her most recent album. The co- founder of, and elder brother in, The Avett Brothers, he is also an accomplished visual fine artist. For depth, I suggest No Hard Feelings (which LiV reacted to and that is how I found them !) and Through My Prayers. Their songwriting is lovely and I have called them Modern Day Renaissance Men since becoming a fan about 10 years ago ...
i was 16 when this song was released on the radio waves across America, started out country like, finished boogy style, and it was well received. people don't recall nowadaze that she was an original rocker, 2nd however to 1st comer trail blazer gracie slick, 2 lead female singers who boldly took the stage and belted out lyrics without trepidation.
Janis was a Heroine addict, she played with 3 different bands, cosmic blues band, big brother and the holding company, and full tilt boogie. She didn't die from a heroine overdose, she died from a drug that was supposed to get you off of heroine. These songs were mainstream, listen to Summertime, and Ball and Chain that will really show how she stretched her voice. Plus Mercedes Benz, what a good little tune.
A current singer with a beautiful voice is Rhiannon Giddens. Her rendition of Waterboy at the Another day, another time concert was amazing. You guys should definitely check her out.
Hot Knife, Red Red Red, and Left Alone are a few more incredibly good songs of hers. Hell, I love all of it except for Carrion, and that's mostly because of the visual imagery.
Her voice was that gravelly when she talked, my Momma's best friend went to school with her, before she got run out of PAT!!! Her and UGK came from Port Arthur, Texas... Listen to Mercedes Benz!!!
pearl was, for a brief period, my mothers Bible. she danced herself away on it. remember, it came out after she had died. so this album is in my heart next to my mom. may she rest in peace. a beautiful and troubled soul, just like janis.
The coolest thing about music, is we all interpret it differently, it means something different to each of us - or touches us in a different way. - I appreciate your opinions. Great reaction! We lost a trio during that time. Janis, Jim and Jimi. RIP to three of the greatest.
Kris Kristofferson was a Rhodes Scholar who studied at Oxford University. That was his poetry. He's no lightweight intellectually.
He also wrote "Help Me Make It Through The Night" which was originally recorded by Country singer Sammi Smith, however, Gladys Knight's cover will blow your socks off. It sounds nothing like a country ballad when Gladys sings it with a little soul.
He was also a son of a General, and an Army Ranger, Vietnam Helicopter pilot.

Worth noting the Kristofferson dated Janis Joplin
Thanks for this comment! All I knew was it wasn't original and I loved it - now I'm even more impressed.
Janis was the greatest female vocalist of her time. She had range that few could ever hope to have.
I see your Janis and raise you Aretha Franklin
Credence Clearwater Revival- Born on the Bayou

Modern production has made people expect perfection. Artists like Joplin, Hendrix and Dylan would be written off today.
Joplin, Cornell, Mick Jagger, Cobain....all known for amazing vocals. All very crackling voices.
Janis Joplin did not have the best voice in the world. She was one of the greatest singers ever.
Ryan agreed it sounds good..
Fact of the matter that he is pointing out as a new listener is that; compared to other soul singers he has been subjected to, she cracks when reaching for high notes. Just what it is.
These guys just call it like they see it I think ;)
Love those gravelly crackin vocals....some of my favorite vocalists are famous for it
OMG "JANIS DOESN'T HAVE RANGE"
She had an E3 to A G6 vocal range. Dude... Stop 🛑 you don't know what range is clearly.
Bro Janis Joplin is the queen of rock in roll my opinion ❤️❤️
She sang from her soul and you can feel it...she is one of my all time favorite singers!!!
I love the roughness of her voice. And this is one of my favorite songs
Roughness brought on in part by all the hard drinking & smoking, Lord bless her. I loved her.
Janis' cracking voice is what made her... well her! She put emotion into her songs and thats what made them powerful.

YES! Now THERE'S a dude with a hell of a voice!
They looked like they wanted it to finish already 😂
Its a great song!!!
Love you guys for this 💘🤗
Janis Joplin's had such a soulful voice, very distinctive. she died to soon. piece of my heart was one of her very best. she has other songs. i've always loved to listen to distinctive voices in music, the ones that aren't like the other cookie cutter voices. from Soul Music which has it's deep roots in almost all gender of music, from Soul, to R & B, Motowns , Rock, Country Rock, especially Southern Rock and rooted solid to traditional Country Music. music has been therapy for my mind, heart and soul. wouldn't want or care to live without it.
Time - Pink Floyd
STEVIE RAY VAUGHN
Etta blows Janis into another universe, are you kidding.
It was her style guys. She was the ultimate hippie. I grew up listening to her. And this is one of my favorite songs she performed.
Immediately clicked like on this one!!
This would be a great pick!
YES! That song is a masterpiece 👍
Saw Moody Blues in concert in the 80s, excellent performance.
Kevin Barker lol me too
That is an amazing song!
Heart - barracuda, magic man, etc ... a popular vote on favorite Heart songs, Ann Wilson amazing voice .
I get you!
But you guys need to revisit The DOORS - ROADHOUSE BLUES OR L.A. WOMAN
JIMI HENDRIX died 1st then JANIS JOPLIN &
JIM MORRISON before passing he use to tell friends that they were drinking with number 3
pzlr one I second that ✋✌️
George’s final comments about Joplin’s performances were right on the money.
Now for the list that will not die until you react/ review:
1. Metallica-Whiplash!( If you heard that do Motorbreath!)
2. Megadeth- Peace Sells but Whose Buying!( If you heard that do Killing is my business and business is good!)
Pink did a FABULOUS cover of this song! She’s got that same raspy, strong, warm voice and she makes it seem modern and yet relevant.
Wasn't it the Monterey Pop Festival where Mama Cass saw Janis and was mesmerized?
@@travissmith9046 Yup.
Joe Cocker is a better example for having raw emotions in song along with uncle Otis,Dennis, and Mr.common man himself David Ruffin
@@anthonymarcus8485 Not better.
Beg to differ there.
Great review. She was one of the great iconic female singers. DREAM THEATER PANIC ATTACK!!!!!!!
Janice Joplin music has a special meaning to my family. She was my sister Janets favorite. Janet passed away in 1998.
Would love to get some Pink Floyd reactions on here.
Pink Floyd - Time
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Pink Floyd - Astronomy Domine
Any of those!
They already did "Wish You Were Here."
@@theswanqueen Can never have too much of Wish You Were Here...
Melissa Etheridge also did a great cover piece of my heart. The only two singers that do Janis Justice.
Robin Addis-Vaughn couldn’t agree more!! Pink’s version is awesome!!
Best female blues singer ever. No one can hold a candle to Janis the real Queen of soul.
oh hell NO! Janis is a legend, it's her signature....listen to more of her songs
freedoms just another word for nothing left to lose. one of the best lines in 20th century music.
Summertime by Janis is amazing.
You guys are class. Always honest. Thank you
She's part of the 27 Club - those artists who died at 27. Heavy drug use.
Duh!
I truly enjoy this series... it does make me laugh that much of the video is listening to music and watching two dudes nod their heads.
Why u skip all the time this masterpiece mann???!!@
Yeah they messed the whole song up!
ive noticed they do that when they dont really care for the song
i was 16 when this song was released on the radio waves across America, started out country like, finished boogy style, and it was well received.
people don't recall nowadaze that she was an original rocker, 2nd however to 1st comer trail blazer gracie slick, 2 lead female singers who boldly took the stage and belted out lyrics without trepidation.
Chevelle - Any of these songs: Family System, The Clincher, Safer Waters, Humanoid, A New Momentum, Clones, An Island.
One of the great country songs of all time. She turned it into one of the great rock and roll tunes of all times.
This is the most idiotic critique of Janice. She was great if they don't see that they aren't worth listening to.
A current singer with a beautiful voice is Rhiannon Giddens. Her rendition of Waterboy at the Another day, another time concert was amazing. You guys should definitely check her out.
"Son of a Preacher Man" Dusty Springfield
Janis Joplin - Summertime
Rocked my socks off the first time I heard it.
react Fiona Apple Fast as you can, Sleep to Dream, or Every single night!
Seconded for Every Single Night!
I love The First Taste... Pretzel music 🥨 ♥
Hot Knife, Red Red Red, and Left Alone are a few more incredibly good songs of hers. Hell, I love all of it except for Carrion, and that's mostly because of the visual imagery.
Fast as You Can or First Taste
Her voice was that gravelly when she talked, my Momma's best friend went to school with her, before she got run out of PAT!!! Her and UGK came from Port Arthur, Texas... Listen to Mercedes Benz!!!
You should do a reaction video for Texas Flood by Stevie Ray Vaughn.
pearl was, for a brief period, my mothers Bible. she danced herself away on it. remember, it came out after she had died. so this album is in my heart next to my mom. may she rest in peace. a beautiful and troubled soul, just like janis.
I understand the pausing so you can talk about the song, but why the skipping?
To quote fight club, one of my favorite movies. “It’s only after we’ve lost everything, that we’re free to do anything”
Kinda tragic what happened with this chick. Died too soon. Great song tho, thanks for the vid!
Janis Joplin is from the same town where I live in Port Arthur, TX. I was raised in the next town over Groves, TX
Janis Joplin was 100% REAL! I ❤
The coolest thing about music, is we all interpret it differently, it means something different to each of us - or touches us in a different way. - I appreciate your opinions. Great reaction! We lost a trio during that time. Janis, Jim and Jimi. RIP to three of the greatest.
Pink did a version of this too, but Joplin’s is better.
Pink did this song justice. ❤
Lisa Janssen she did, for sure.
