  • Today I worked on cleaning up the perennial bed. Getting rid of the spring annuals to make way for the summer perennials so I thought I'd give you a little garden tour and see how the cottage garden transitions to summer.

    True cottage garden. I have several books on England's cottage gardens and this is what I imagined based on the pictures and the text from books. The cottage gardens were not the wealthy landowners, but the people who had the simple gardens with a blend of things they collected through the years. That is what yours looks like, a well-tended, collected garden.

      Thank you, I will normally use fish emulsion because it's organic but a couple times a year I mix in Espoma Flower Fertilizer which is slow release granules. I feed the roses slow release rose food as well. Plus between seasons, normally in the fall and early spring, I will lay down a good layer of compost. I wish I was more regular with the liquid fish fertilizer but I forget.

    This video just popped up and is very opportune as we are just in the process of widening and replanting a flowerbed in our garden, if it ever stops raining! Your border is lovely and full of many favourites. Ours is not so sunny and near a high wall, so I will be mixing in some bushes with perennials to give some year round interest, as I look at it from my kitchen window. As a new subscriber, I look forward to some more inspiration, thank you! Best wishes from Penny in Liverpool 🇬🇧😊💕

    Beautiful garden! Do you have any tips for fighting the slugs? Last year they really went after my echinacea, zinnias and meadow sage (pink salvia). I’d love to have Shasta daisies as well but am at the point where I hesitate to plant anything that isn’t slug resistant. Any advice would be great.

    • @LemonsandLarkspur
      @LemonsandLarkspur  3 роки тому

      I had a severe problem with them attacking my young perennials last year and lost a couple of plants. What I found effective was to cut an orange in half and place it cut side down in the area you have the problem. They will be drawn to the citrus and congregate there. In the morning just take the orange half with all it’s stow always and throw it in the garbage can outside. Repeat until you find zero slugs in the morning. It works for pill bugs as well. I have heard some place a lid full of beer down which draws them in and drowns them. Hope one of those works for you.

    garden is beautifull,
    Tip 1. (see if it is the same in your area.)
    brown watersee caused by algae is not healthy for birds.
    birds only want to use it in extreme distress. fresh water and possibly green algae is okay.
    Blue algae is also bad.
    Tip 2. Yes it is modern, but the etiquette standard is sunglasses off when talking to someone.
    You talk in your own garden, so understandable in this case, but it is not nice.
    love and especially see this not as negative criticism, but as constructive tips for your work.
    Herma

      @LemonsandLarkspur  4 роки тому

      Thank you for the tips. We have very hard water and the bottom of the bird bath is more hard water deposit which I try to scrape off regularly. As far as the glasses, they are my prescription glasses that change automatically to sun glasses which is a bit maddening if I don't want them too but a must here in Southern California. What zone do you garden in?
